Welcome to the 10th anniversary season of the Alliance/ Kendeda National Graduate Playwriting Competition! Ten years ago, Jennings Hertz Artistic Director Susan V. Booth had a great idea: to nurture the next generation of playwrights by dedicating one show each season — an entire production — to a playwright who just finished graduate school. The success of our alumni has been astonishing: 90 percent of our winning playwrights are still writing for the theatre; 90 percent of our winning playwrights have had another production. Their individual accomplishments are as impressive as the group statistics. One playwright is a professor in a tenure track position; another is a leading TV writer who makes time to write plays because she loves the theatre; and one is one of the most produced and influential playwrights in the English-speaking world. That playwright is Tarell Alvin McCraney. Stephanie Richardson

McCraney’s Choir Boy has taken New York by storm this summer, and the Alliance is so proud to have partnered once again with the prestigious Manhattan Theatre Club on this production. But mostly we are looking forward to the magic that happens when Tarell’s work plays in Atlanta. Tarell and I usually end up gossiping about Shakespeare when we are together. We share those classic plays and their intense and confident theatricality as a touchstone of theatrical education. Like Shakespeare, Tarell combines rigorous poetry and classic storytelling with the language of contemporary life.

out of the water

AND INTO THE CHOIR Tarell Alvin McCraney stirs together reality, religion and mythology for a story about race, sexuality, bullying and family

By Kathy Janich Tarell Alvin McCraney has been writing plays since he was a 13-year-old trying to make his way in inner-city Miami. He chose theatre, he’s said, as a way to support and express himself.

in America, McCraney returns with Choir Boy, a co-production with Manhattan Theatre Club, an American premiere that, before now, has only been seen by audiences in London and New York.

He’s been doing a whole lot of expressing himself since Atlanta audiences discovered him in 2008 with In the Red and Brown Water, his winning Alliance/Kendeda National Graduate Playwriting Competition drama about one young woman’s ascent into adulthood.

It’s part of a marathon sprint he hopes to complete (and survive) by next April. He spent his summer teaching at Steppenwolf Theatre Company in Chicago, where he’s an ensemble member alongside the likes of Tracy Letts, Martha Plimpton and Joan Allen. Then he’s hopping between New York, Haiti, the Dominican Republic and London

Now 32 and one of the more celebrated young playwrights

8

EncoreAtlantA.com

He’s also hoping to squeeze in a quick stop here to see Choir Boy, his coming-of-age piece about the push-and-pull of tradition and selfexpression in young black men. In it, he takes on themes of race, sexuality, faith, bullying, difficult family relationships, and music. McCraney grew up hard in Miami, moving in with relatives. Sometimes he’d live with his dad and grandparents, dining on PB&J sandwiches and going to church, where he sang in the choir. Other times he’d be with his mom, a crack addict with an abusive boyfriend and unpaid bills. She died at 40, when McCraney was 23. Alvin, the middle name he uses, is a tribute to her. That’s the fire in which this multiaward-winning writer was forged, now crafting plays packed with poetic language and vivid imagery, an aggregate of rawness, reality, religion and mythology. Alliance audiences saw that in In the Red and Brown Water and will again in Choir Boy. “If there’s another playwright as sensitive to the sound of words as to their detonation, you wouldn’t know it,” a Village Voice critic said in writing about Choir Boy. How does McCraney do it? He’s not sure. He’s a reader, doing so often but slowly. And he listens a lot. He finds

that everyday poetry — things friends say, “Game of Thrones,” for example — get stuck in his head, so he throws them back out onto the page. “I don’t know how else to describe it,” he says. “I will visit moments in my life, and I will hear it rather than see it.” Like his Choir Boy characters, McCraney has been known to harmonize. There was the church choir at age 9 or 10, then the high school chorus at Miami’s New World School of the Arts. “I realized I couldn’t sing very well,” he says, in typically self-effacing fashion. “I’m musical enough to know when I am flat and sharp and that I shouldn’t sing by myself.” Beyond Choir Boy, he’s immersed in his 10-actor adaptation of Antony and Cleopatra, a history/tragedy play usually done with a cast size of 17 to 44. Setting it in Saint-Domingue (now the Dominican Republic) rather than Egypt and the Roman Empire, he says, should make the Bard’s language and the play’s complexities more relatable for today’s audiences. Although he’s still looking to make enough money to eat regularly and buy a house, the Kendeda competition was a turning point in his life. “Kendeda said to me that writing plays is important, and I still feel that way,” he says. It also led to his partnership with director Tina Landau, another Steppenwolf ensemble member, who has now directed his work six or seven times. Success has also brought a Wikipedia page. “It weirds me out,” he says. “I’m like, ‘Who put this up and why?’“

from old friends and 2014’s winner

Each will share a new piece with us. The lineup:

The Hertz Stage this season is home to an epic conflagration of imagination, talent and original voices. The four-show lineup introduces Atlanta audiences to new work by some of America’s brightest young playwrights — three old friends and one new one. Together we’re celebrating a milestone for the Alliance/ Kendeda National Playwriting Competition, an idea that took root 10 years ago and has grown stronger and more vibrant than we could ever have imagined. This one-ofa-kind national competition helps student playwrights in the country’s leading graduate programs make the transition to professional theatre. It’s with pride and joy that we introduce you to our 2014 winner, Madhuri Shekar, from the University of Southern California, and welcome back Tarell Alvin McCraney (In the Red and Brown Water, 2008), Kenneth Lin (…,” said Said, 2006) and Meg Miroshnik (The Fairytale Lives of Russian Girls, 2012).

18

Choir Boy. Through Oct. 13 on the Hertz Stage. Only New York and London audiences have seen McCraney’s coming-of-age story about a confident, charismatic boy named Pharus and his struggles at an all-boys private prep school for African-American young men. Since In the Red and Brown Water, McCraney’s work has been produced in, among other cities, New York, Chicago, Washington, San Francisco and London. Warrior Class. Oct. 25-Nov. 17. Lin’s critically acclaimed political thriller features an Asian-American candidate who’s being groomed for a big Republican race in New York City — unless a former girlfriend publicly besmirches his sterling reputation. Lin has become one of the most widely commissioned and produced Asian-American writers in the country. In Love and Warcraft. Jan. 31-Feb. 23, 2014. Evie, a master of relationships, is the focal point in Shekar’s world premiere. She has a waiting list of classmates

willing to pay her top dollar to fix their relationships. How does she do it? By using the skills and tactics she learned while becoming one of the best World of Warcraft players on the planet.

The Tall Girls. March 7-30, 2014. Sometimes basketball is the only way out. Even for a girl. Even in the Dust Bowl of the 1930s. When a mysterious young man gets off the train in Poor Prairie, a few things are clear. He’s teaching at the high school, he knows the game and he has the only inflated basketball in town. Another world premiere from Miroshnik. These four writers are part of a group of 50 extraordinary artists to have come through the Alliance/Kendeda competition. The anniversary season also includes 12 readings and workshops by other alumni winners and finalists. Experiences have already included an exciting portrait of a drag family hosted by the Jungle, a reading of a play about dementia that brought together Atlanta’s caregiving community. Please email celise.kalke@ woodruffcenter.org or check alliancetheatre.org for details.

about the alliance theatre Founded in 1968, the Alliance Theatre has become the lead producing theatre in the Southeast, creating the powerful experience of shared theatre for diverse audiences. The Alliance values excellence, pursued with integrity and creativity, and achieved through collaboration. Reaching more than 200,000 patrons annually, the Alliance delivers programming that challenges adult and youth audiences to think critically and care deeply. Under the leadership of Susan V. Booth, the Alliance received the 2007 Regional Theatre Tony Award in recognition of excellence. The Alliance, known for its artistic standards and national role in creating significant theatrical works, has premiered more than 70 original productions including Tony winners The Color Purple by Alice Walker and Alfred Uhry’s The Last Night of Ballyhoo. It has a reputation for developing important American musicals with a track record of Broadway, touring and subsequent productions, including the world premieres of Sister Act, Come Fly Away, Bring It On and the U.S. premiere of Zorro, with music by the Gipsy Kings. The Alliance nurtures the careers of playwrights through its Alliance/Kendeda National Graduate Playwriting Competition, producing a premiere for the winner and national networking opportunities for four finalists. The Acting Program and Education Department reaches nearly 50,000 students annually through performances, classes, drama camps and in-school initiatives. The Alliance creates and produces plays for young audiences at every age level: from the Collision Project, where high school artists create and perform new work based on a classic text, to Theatre for the Very Young, creating interactive shows for infants and toddlers. The Alliance offers community education classes for all ages and levels of theatre interest, and adult student productions of unproduced plays in developments. Active in Georgia classrooms, the Alliance has developed programs using theatre techniques to help students learn through storytelling and problem-solving. The Alliance’s Institute for Educators and Teaching Artists equips teachers with theatrical techniques that link directly to school curriculum, align with the Georgia Performance Standards and increase student learning. These programs include GA Wolf Trap, which focuses on literacy skills for children in Pre-K – 2nd grade, and Dramaturgy K-12, in which students create research material that informs Alliance productions and prepares peer audiences. Twice recognized by the U.S. Education Department as leaders in arts education, these programs reflect the Alliance’s commitment to citywide arts access. The Alliance delivers the finest talent, art and educational opportunities for Atlanta audiences — proving once again that this is where great theatre lives. alliancetheatre.org or 404.733.4650 facebook.com/AllianceTheatre

discover us “In Choir Boy, I rediscovered pieces of my once puzzled life. Traces of myself — fragmented by the dichotomy of agreeing with my oppressors, accepting complex yet alluring relationships (trapped in dark places), and ironically assigning power and comfort to the emotional soundtrack of a homophobic religion. The experience of trying desperately to discipline inconvenient, yet persistent natural passions and striving to be the best version of self — but never clearing the hurdle, penetrated me with nostalgia. Feeling qualified but not confident; capable but not validated. With passion and precision, Choir Boy perfectly recalled my journey of selfdiscovery — collecting courage and character through the challenge of internal and external persecution.” — Randevyn Pierre, Southern Regional Coordinator, The Center for Black Equity MANHATTAN THEATRE CLUB. Under the leadership of Artistic Director Lynne Meadow and Executive Producer Barry Grove, MTC has become one of the country’s most prominent theatre companies. Productions at its Broadway and Off-Broadway venues have earned 19 Tony Awards and six Pulitzer Prizes, an accomplishment unparalleled by a New York theatrical institution. Renowned productions include Choir Boy, Humor Abuse, The Assembled Parties, Venus in Fur, Good People, The Whipping Man, Time Stands Still, Ruined, Rabbit Hole, Doubt, Proof, The Tale of the Allergist’s Wife, Love! The Woodruff Circle

The Woodruff Arts Center and our four artistic divisions – the Alliance Theatre, Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, High Museum of Art and Young Audiences – rely on the generosity of those donors whose support extends to all parts of our organization. The members of The Woodruff Circle each contributed more than $250,000 to our efforts last year. We are deeply grateful to these 34 partners who help to ensure that the arts thrive in our city.
