Twist is a story about the things that matter. Ironic, given the title, right? But this twist on Oliver Twist proves with great heart and great art, how powerful and timeless the story of a child’s search for love and family and home truly is. It was a story needed long before Dickens delivered the original, and it will move us to tears long after this gorgeous retelling Rosemary Newcott moves on to other audiences. Love, poverty, music and redemption
Director/choreographer Debbie Allen on Twist by kristi casey sanders
As a child, internationally renowned director, choreographer and performer Debbie Allen spent her summers in Baton Rouge. “I grew up with the tastes, the sounds, the smells, the ghost stories … and the unchaperoned trips to the bayou, where we did things we weren’t supposed to do as children,” she says. During those summers, her family would take trips to “the big city” of New Orleans, which impressed her as a surpassingly unique musical and ethnic melting pot. Those childhood impressions of New Orleans resonate throughout Twist, the world premiere musical Allen has helped sharpen and bring to the Alliance stage. Allen first heard about the project two years ago from Tena Clark, who wrote the lyrics and co-wrote the music with Gary Prim. [The book was written by William F. Brown.] At the time, Allen was directing a concert featuring Clark’s music at Philips Arena in downtown Atlanta. “She said, ‘I have this musical I was working on, and I’m thinking of pulling

it out again,’” Allen remembers. “When she first introduced me to the material and I heard the music … the storytelling totally transcends Dickens, and the time frame makes it, culturally, so relevant. It really touched me, and I could see what I could do with it.” Last winter, when Allen was chosen to be the one to direct and choreograph the final version, she was overjoyed. “I just love this project,” she says. “Right now, in this world, we’re so sensitive about what’s going on with young people: the horror of Haiti and what’s going on with the orphans; and the whole situation in the Gulf leaving people without work. … [Twist] is a story about greed and the hardships that people have to go through if they don’t have money. But it’s also about love and people who care, who reach out to help when they see the need.” The title character Twist, a young mulatto boy, has been abandoned, Allen says, and grows up taunted and demeaned because of his racial mix. a child, Allen also experienced the effect racism can have on young people. “A big part of my drive [to succeed] had to do with growing up in the segregated South,” she explains. “I wanted to dance, and the big schools were segregated; I couldn’t go. So, my mom packed us up and moved us to Mexico [where] no one cared about color, and I could go anywhere.” Allen says her mother gave her a feeling of belonging to the universe as well as the understanding that things change because they must, and that she would have to find her own way until they did. When Allen had children of her own, she brought them with her whenever she worked overseas to pass on some of that wisdom. But, she says, there’s no place like home, even with the challenges that still exist for people of color. So much has changed. “It’s hard to want to dance and not be able to go to dance class,” she adds. “You can’t even imagine that [happening] now, can you?” One of Allen’s lifelong dreams was to open her own dance studio, which she did almost a decade ago in Los Angeles. The Debbie Allen Dance Academy teaches classical, modern and ethnic forms of dance from a variety of cultural backgrounds. It is designed to give children the tools they need to succeed not only in the performing arts, but also in life. Working with children is an experience that has come in handy on this project. “We have a lot of children in the show,” Allen says. “We have

What’s the story? It’s the eve of the Great Depression. In New Orleans, a wealthy white woman has fallen in love with a talented black performer. A child named Twist is born to them, but abandoned after their deaths to be raised in an orphanage. Twist eventually falls in with a bootlegger gang of other orphaned boys and meets a colorful array of people before finding a home. Based on Charles Dickens’ classic Oliver Twist, this Alliance season premiere is generating national buzz. four amazing kids from Atlanta. Twist, [played by Alaman Diadhiou], came from Los Angeles. He’s actually one of my students. His father’s African, his mother’s white, he’s beautiful, and he dances up a storm. You look at him and you just melt.” That kind of charisma is necessary for a show like Twist, which deals with complex emotions and societal issues. “[Audiences] are going to experience a lot of different things,” Allen says. “Some are dark. Some are full of joy. Some are so vibrant, and some are so painful. It runs the whole gamut of emotions.” And then there’s the music, which is amazing. “The music in this — you hear it one time and you sing it over and over and over,” Allen says. “This is the kind of show they’ll want to see more than once.”

profiles Why this play? The process of adaptation is as old as the Greeks, who transformed religious myths into stage plays. Shakespeare was an incredible adaptor, taking stories, novels and other plays from all over the world and adapting them to suit Elizabethan England. Adaptation preserves the essence of the original story, but makes changes in order to update the story for contemporary times.
Why Atlanta? Atlanta audiences love a good story, and one of the greatest storytellers the world has seen was Charles Dickens. He created unforgettable characters who propelled heart-rending stories. During his lifetime, America warmly embraced his work, and he remains a cherished author to this day.
Why now? When this extraordinary group of artists approached the Alliance about Oliver Twist set in New Orleans in the 1920s, the possibilities for extraordinary adaptation seemed rife. New Orleans culture is all about adaptation – adapting French customs to fit American life, adapting Cajun music to an American sound. It’s always been a place of alternatives to the established American norm. The Alliance aims to bring the best national ideas to Atlanta, and this large-scale, new musical founded on a great story fits our mission of shared theatre for diverse people. This project allows national artists to refine, rehearse and perform work still growing and changing for an Atlanta audience, featuring many Atlanta and national artists.
About the Alliance Theatre Now in its 42nd season, Atlanta’s nationally acclaimed Alliance Theatre, recipient of the 2007 Regional Theatre Tony Award® and a leading national theatre, creates the powerful experience of shared theatre for diverse people on two stages for youth and adult audiences. Under the leadership of the Jennings Hertz, Jr. Artistic Director Susan V. Booth, the Alliance Theatre is a national theatre with a local address, reaching out annually to almost 200,000 patrons and members of the community. Known for its high artistic standards and national role in creating significant theatrical works, the Alliance launched three Tony Award-winning hits to Broadway: Alice Walker’s The Color Purple, Elton John and Tim Rice’s Aida and Alfred Uhry’s The Last Night of Ballyhoo. And, in a rare event for a regional theatre, it originated the national tour of the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. Most recently, the Alliance transferred Twyla Tharp’s Come Fly Away to Broadway for a critically acclaimed Tony Award-nominated run. The theatre has premiered 60 works including adaptations of Carson McCullers’ The Heart is a Lonely Hunter and Pearl Cleage’s Blues for an Alabama Sky. Further evidence of the Alliance’s commitment to new work is founding its nationally recognized Kendeda Graduate Playwriting Competition, a cutting-edge program introducing student playwrights to professional networks while producing the world premiere of the winning student’s work. The Alliance Theatre also offers extensive education and outreach programs such as the Institute for Educators and the Collision Project for high school students. The Alliance continuously brings Atlanta the finest talent and finest art—proving once again that the Alliance is where great theatre lives. 404.733.4650 or www.alliancetheatre.org The Alliance Theatre is a division of the Woodruff Arts Center in Atlanta, Georgia, which also includes the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, High Museum of Art and Young Audiences. http://facebook.com/AllianceTheatre

Challenging social mores From Oliver to Twist On June 7, 1892, Homer Plessy, an “octoroon” (7/8 white, but legally African-American) working for the Citizens’ Committee, boarded a whitesonly car to test Louisiana’s Separate Car Act of 1890. A light-skinned man, he was able to pass for white and bought a ticket without incident. Once seated, he announced his heritage loudly, provoking a detective (also put in place by the Citizens’ Committee) to pursue his arrest. The resulting lawsuit, Plessy v. Ferguson, arrived at the U.S. Supreme Court two years after the arrest. The Citizens’ Committee hoped it would provoke federal intervention and help repeal Louisiana’s race laws, which had eroded many of the freedoms former slaves and free people of color had enjoyed during Reconstruction. But those hopes were dashed with the court’s “separate but equal” ruling, which institutionalized segregation. By resetting Charles Dickens’ Oliver Twist in New Orleans during Prohibition
by celise kalke
(1920-1933), the musical Twist uses the city’s complicated history to explore the plight and status of the mixed race child in America. Dickens used his storytelling skills and gift for creating unforgettable characters to examine and illuminate the social problems of his time. In Oliver Twist, he portrayed the plight of the orphan from cradle to grave, showing how easy it was for the lovable waifs of baby farms to become the villainous, amoral criminals that plagued London. And although Dickens’ lead character is redeemed by his parents’ class status, Dickens is unsparing in his indictment of the state’s treatment of orphans. Similarly, exploring the world of 1920s New Orleans in this musical illuminates the racial elements that add to the orphan Twist’s plight. Twist is the issue of two worlds working hard to remain separate. His story is that of anyone whose very identity challenges the social mores of their time. alliancetheatre.org
