ince the beginning of time, mothers across the world have been celebrated with feasts. the modern version of mother’s Day dates to 1907 when Anna Jarvis of Philadelphia honored her deceased mother. thanks to a successful letter-writing campaign, she convinced the U.S. congress to pass legislation in 1914 designating the second Sunday in may as mother’s Day.

Something old, something new South Pacific reclaims its gravitas

hen South Pacific premiered on Broadway in 1949, Americans were just four years past World War II. Critics called the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical about Navy nurses, Seabees, Polynesian beauties and Tonkinese natives “magnificent” and “a show of rare enchantment.” In the decades since, South Pacific has morphed into more of a sunny, gollygee, all-American show performed most often by amateur groups, featuring many a high school boy trying hard to locate middle-age gravitas. Something had been lost. Director Bartlett Sher was determined to find that something when he began working on the Lincoln Center production that led to this tour. So, he returned to the source material — the original creative team’s notes and James A. Michener’s fictionalized memoir Tales of the South Pacific, with its stories of Ensign Nellie Forbush, French planter Emile de Becque and island entrepreneur Bloody Mary. The result, says Carmen Cusack, who plays Nellie, is a more realistic look at the 1940s. “It’s how Americans lived

and thought and played,” she says. “It has really brought a lot more color to the story.” And a darker tone, one that reflects the human cost of war and the racial prejudices of the time. Sher added a few lines of dialogue and the song “My Girl Back Home” (first heard in the 1958 movie) in which Nellie and Lt. Joseph Cable try to reconcile their upbringing with their wartime lives and loves. Sher also uses his ensemble to depict the racial divide at that time (watch, for example, where African-American actors are positioned during chorus numbers). Cusack first saw South Pacific in London in 2004. She remembers the piece as “very cute, all sunshiny and pretty” and the songs as “lovely and sweet.” Atlanta’s Performing Arts Publication 9

of Broadway’s Golden Age, it begins with an overture, one that lasts almost six minutes. Like the best of today’s shows, it uses 21st-century stagecraft to help tell (not overwhelm) the story. It’s told cinematically, Cusack explains. “You really are transported to an island. It’s hard to describe how beautiful it is and how the scenes move in and out.” Kathy Janich is an Atlanta theater artist and freelance writer. After years in daily newspapers, she has found a joyous second career as an artistic associate at both Synchronicity Theatre and 7 Stages.

They still are. But with Sher’s vision, the musical more accurately reflects what Cusack calls “the viewpoint of Americans at that time. We were segregated. We called [minorities] a lot of names. No one even thought it was wrong at the time. That’s just the way things were. No one questioned why they felt the way they felt.” The original South Pacific won 11 Tony Awards, including musical, book, score, director and scenic design as well as actor, actress, and featured actor and actress. It won the 1950 Pulitzer Prize for drama, only the second musical in history at that time to do so. And, with 1,925 performances, it remains the 30th longestrunning show in Broadway history, just behind Pippin and ahead of Aida. This South Pacific won seven Tonys, for Sher’s direction as well as revival, actor, scenic design, costumes, lighting and sound design. It recently reached the 800performance mark on Broadway and, after being one of the toughest tickets to get in New York for more than a year, is still playing to 80 percent capacity. Cusack, who has dark hair and “European” features never thought she’d get cast as Nellie, a character she considered a pretty, blonde, cheerleader, Doris Day type. Now, after more than a few months as the cockeyed optimist from Arkansas, she’s found the richness in the role first performed by Mary Martin and re-created for the revival by threetime Tony Award nominee Kelli O’Hara. South Pacific may present a perfect blend of old and new. Like most musicals

Tyler Perry’s prescription for laughs
W
hen Tyler Perry burst onto the scene over a decade ago as the 6’5” revolver-carrying matriarch Mabel “Madea” Simmons, he filled a niche that had largely been overlooked. Sure, African-American comedic theater had been done before, but not in this way. This was something different. Something refreshing. And a whole new take on laughter being the best medicine. Aware of the stigma that is often associated with psychotherapy in the black community, Perry used the stage as an alternative source of help, replacing the traditional “therapist” with the comical figure of Madea, whose nononsense opinions on faith, love, forgiveness and self-worth resonated with audiences on an especially cathartic level. Perry’s brand of dramatic comedy struck a chord. Amidst all the laughs, people were paying attention. So, when word spread that theater would no longer be Perry’s genre of focus, and that Madea would ultimately (though not immediately) take a backseat to his other artistic dealings, critics predicted his demise. They argued he would alienate his fan base by neglecting the very things that made his work special. They were wrong. In fact, away from the stage, Perry gained a more diverse following with the release of eight films (several without Madea) and two weekly television sitcoms, not to mention the highly anticipated sequel Why Did I Get Married Too?, in movie theaters now, and the 2010 Oscar-nominated Precious, which he coproduced with Oprah Winfrey. GOLDEN RULES The following brief, but important article has been published to assist in audience etiquette. To this day we get at least one phone call a week asking for reprint rights. These calls and letters come from orchestras and theaters, opera and ballet companies all over the United States and Canada, big and little troupes alike. The message, telegraphed between the lines, seems to be an S.O.S.: American audiences are out of control. Are they? Here’s a refresher course. Please read on, and remember, part of one’s pact as an audience member is to take seriously the pleasure of others, a responsibility fulfilled by quietly attentive (or silently inattentive) and selfcontained behavior. After all, you can be as demonstrative as you want during bows and curtain calls. 1. Go easy with the atomizer; many people are highly allergic to perfume and cologne. 2. If you bring a child, make sure etiquette is part of the experience. Children love learning new things. 3. Unwrap all candies and cough drops before the curtain goes up or the concert begins. 4. Make sure cell phones, beepers, and watch alarms are OFF. And don't jangle the bangles. 5. The overture is part of the performance. Please cease talking at this point. 6. Note to lovebirds: When you lean your heads together, you block the view of the person behind you. Leaning forward also blocks the view. 7. THOU SHALT NOT TALK, or hum, or sing along, or beat time with a body part. 8. Force yourself to wait for a pause or intermission before rifling through a purse, backpack or shopping bag. 9. Yes, the parking lot gets busy and public transportation is tricky, but leaving while the show is in progress is discourteous. 10. Honor the old standby: Do unto others, as you would have them do unto you.

ince the beginning of time, mothers across the world have been celebrated with feasts. The modern version of Mother’s Day dates to 1907 when Anna Jarvis of Philadelphia honored her deceased mother. Thanks to a successful letter-writing campaign, she convinced the U.S. Congress to pass legislation in 1914, designating the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day. 44 EncoreAtlantA.com

Ever since then, sons and daughters have commemorated mom on her designated day — to the tune of more than $14 billion in 2009. According to Hallmark, 96 percent of us participate in Mother’s Day and with more than 83 million mothers in America, that’s a lot of gifting. In fact, retailers report that Mother’s Day is the most popular gift-giving day in the country after Christmas. Many restaurants ring up their biggest receipts and it’s the peak day for long-distance calling. Florists, jewelers and perfumers all do tons of business in mid-May. What does your mom like? We’ve grouped gift suggestions, based on personality types. Some are a splurge; others are inexpensive. You’ll find ideas for you mom — no matter who she is. Foodie Mom If mom is obsessed with the Food Network, loves perusing cookbooks and tracks the latest restaurants, she’s a foodie. Whether she’s got a sweet tooth or prefers savory items, you can please her palate with a bacon, wine, chocolate or coffee of the month club (about $25/month for java junkies). Spring for brunch at a tony local hotel (don’t forget to include the tip!) Or, give mom the day off and prepare not one, but three meals (letting her call the culinary shots). You shop, set a pretty table, handwrite the menus, serve her (keep her wine glass full!) and clean up the kitchen. 46 EncoreAtlantA.com
New Mom About 4.3 million women become mothers every year. And all are tired. A spa gift certificate along with (your) baby-sitting services allows her to indulge in much needed down time. Daily chores can be a challenge with a little one underfoot, so a customized meal or laundry service is a thoughtful gift. If your mom’s looking to regain her pre-baby figure, why not kick-start her goals with a gift certificate for a personal trainer? Sentimental mothers would love a heart-shaped locket or charm bracelet from Tiffany (prices starting at $135). Tech Mom If mom constantly tweets, has a Facebook page or downloads the latest iPhone apps, she’s a techie. Give her gadgets some pizzazz: upgrade her phone or shop for a snazzy laptop bag. If she’s hooked on puzzles, she might enjoy a handheld electronic Sudoku game (target.com has one for under $25.) And if mom’s got old devices piled up, it’s a thoughtful gesture to recycle them for her.

Fashionista Mom If your mother subscribes to Vogue, carries a wallet full of credit cards or has her hairstylist on speed dial, she’s a fashionista. Book an appointment with a personal shopper at Nordstrom, Saks or Bloomingdales — and have lunch catered in, complete with champagne. Or, give her a sitting with a photographer who specializes in editorial-style photography (check the masthead of glossy city magazines for names). You also could trade her lunchbox for a lacquered bento box that’s sure to turn heads; justbento.com has resources. Active Mom If your mom is always on the go with a Blackberry in one hand and car keys in the other, she’s active. She might enjoy a tour of Historic Oakland Cemetery or the Fox Theatre (about $10 each). A gift card to REI presented with a stylish aluminum water bottle allows her to select the latest gear, whether she’s into running, paddling or cycling. You also could go on a bike ride and enjoy a cozy picnic lunch afterwards, or reconnect on the hiking trail at the Len Foote Hike Inn at Amicalola Falls State Park. Globetrotting Mom If you mother is hooked on the Travel Channel, has a passport full of stamps or speaks a second language, she’s a globetrotter. 48 EncoreAtlantA.com
Keep her well-read and within evertightening baggage restrictions while she’s traveling with a sleek Kindle (around $250 on amazon.com). Buy a gift card at bnbgiftfinder.com, then let mom select from more than 1,500 top-rated U.S. inns. Or treat her to a show at the Fox Theatre, Spivey Hall, the Rialto or Ferst Center, all of which offer international performances. Crafty/Green Mom If she scrapbooks, recycles, knits or volunteers, she’s crafty and/or ecominded. Simpleshoes.com has a wide selection of sustainable kicks or shop pacificaperfume.com for soy candles (the lemongrass is lovely). Check out Knitch, in the heart of VirginiaHighland, for luxury yarns, patterns and classes (around $100). Help her do good while looking good: 25% of the profits of Kahina Giving Beauty (kahina-givingbeauty.com) support women in Morocco; the argan oil ($72) is a multipurpose beauty staple. Or, simply shadow mom for the day with your digital camera, capturing memories to assemble in an album. That’s priceless.

Continued from page 12 Now the man, who at one time couldn’t get the folks of Tinseltown to glance his way, is the reigning king of black entertainment and a huge Hollywood hit maker — several of his films have opened at No. 1. In 2009, Forbes ranked him one of the 15 “Best Paid Celebrities,” along with the likes of Steven Spielberg and Jerry Bruckheimer. But to his fans, those who have sensed his star-power from the beginning, he’s the top doctor — the one who always has the best prescription for laughs. And to Atlantans, he’s the hometown success who’s created jobs for hundreds of local actors at his Tyler Perry Studios on 10th Street. This month, Perry gets back to his roots with his 12th stage play, Madea’s Big Happy Family. Currently in the sec-

In an attempt to bring everyone together, and hopefully closer to God, various issues arise that make that task virtually impossible. Luckily Madea is there to help the family get their priorities straight. ond half of a 50+ city tour that included stops in Los Angeles, New York, Philadelphia and Chicago. TSA has tightened regulations once again, this time restricting access to carry-on bags. But thanks to ScotteVest (SeV) Travel Clothing, it doesn’t have to apply to you. With SeV’s sleek clothing, you can carry everything you need in your pockets. The patented design features slim interior compartments that allows devices to be seen and controlled; a weightmanagement system that balances the weight from the added items; a bulge-free pocket design; and a “personal area network” that manages wires and earbuds through the jacket’s lining. And since all SeV products are clothing rather than bags, they’re 100 percent TSA compliant. carry it on: Scottevest.com 52 EncoreAtlantA.com
