now what?
A refresher on how your night at Atlanta Symphony Hall will play out.
By Ansley Gogol
1
It’s been awhile since I’ve really sat down and listened to classical music – Any suggestions?
Let go of any preconceptions you may have about classical music and prepare to enjoy yourself! Let the music trigger your emotions and memories. Keep an eye on how the conductor and musicians interact with each other, and pay attention to the beautiful rhythms and movements.
2
What Should I Wear?
There’s no dress code. Wear what makes you feel comfortable. Most people will be in business attire or dress clothes: you’ll see everything from khakis to cocktail dresses. Evening gowns and tuxedos are rare, but some people enjoy dressing up for a special night. It’s really up to you!
3
What time should I arrive at Symphony Hall?
Come early! Plan to arrive about
14 Atlanta Symphony Orchestra | aso.org
20 minutes prior to concert time. The Orchestra will start right on time, and you don’t want to listen from the lobby. If you do happen to arrive late, don’t fear. An usher will escort you inside during a pause in the program.
4
How long will the concert last?
Most concerts are about two hours long. Sometimes several pieces are played throughout the program; during others, one work is played straight through. Familiarizing yourself with the program before the concert starts will help you understand what to expect. Also, you’ll have about 15-20 minutes to stretch your legs, socialize, or grab a drink or snack from the lobby at intermission.
5
When should I applaud?
The audience doesn’t usually show their appreciation until the end of each piece. When a piece is finished, feel free to let loose with your applause!

Out with the old… As you return to Atlanta Symphony Hall to see a concert this season, some things will be right where you left them — namely your world-class orchestra in top-notch form. Other things might seem a little different to you.
A Symphony Hall Makeover
Story by Sean Ward
T
he first change you probably noticed when you walked into Atlanta Symphony Hall is what has come to be known as the “shell” — an upgraded wooden structure which fully embraces the stage, providing enclosed walls and a ceiling.
26 Atlanta Symphony Orchestra | aso.org
The shell “gives the acoustic property to the hall, reflects the sound back into the audience, and also around the stage so the musicians can better hear each other,” explains Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Senior Production Stage Manager Paul Barrett. The shell was
Barrett. “This redesigned shell has corrected all of the Hall’s dead spots and is going to help the audience, and the Orchestra, hear tremendously better.”
A New Addition to the ASO Family Weighing in at almost 1,000 lbs. and nearly nine feet in length, the ASO has added a brand new Steinway grand piano which will debut during this 2013-14 season.
installed late this past summer and has been customized to meet the acoustic and visual needs of Atlanta Symphony Hall.
The piano was selected from the Steinway factory in New York City, and was handpicked by pianist Jeremy Denk and a team of ASO staff: President & CEO Stanley E. Romanstein, Ph.D., Vice President for Artistic Planning Evans Mirageas, and Piano Technician Jonathan Edwards. The Steinway Model D is the largest and most sophisticated piano Steinway produces.
“This completely redesigned shell… is going to help the audience, and the Orchestra, hear tremendously better.” — Paul Barrett
Before being installed, the giant, acoustic shell was designed by a dedicated team of sonic professionals who tested every square inch of the hall to locate any acoustic deficiencies, or “dead spots,” where the sound was trapped. “The original shell dates back to the 1960s and was deteriorating quickly,” says encoreatlanta.com | Atlanta’s Performing Arts Publication 27

New Music...
“ Sonically and acoustically, it will be a first-class experience for the audience” — Julianne M. Fish
“I think it really shows that we are providing a high quality instrument to match our artists’ ability to perform,” said Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Vice President and General Manager of Orchestra Operations Julianne Fish. It has been nearly 14 years since the ASO has added a new concert piano to Symphony Hall, and this will be one of two that guest artists will be able to play and select from before a performance. Fish believes this will be as beneficial for the audience as it will be for the world-famous pianists who will play them. “Sonically and acoustically, it will be a first-class experience for the audience,” said Fish. “It really all comes back to artistic excellence.”
28 Atlanta Symphony Orchestra | aso.org
If you haven’t had enough “new” to please you yet, don’t worry — the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra will perform four world premieres throughout the course of the season, consistently reaffirming its role as a leader of modern day music presentation. Two of the four premieres will be performed in October. October 3-5, 2013, Music Director Robert Spano will lead the Orchestra in the premiere of …of shadow and light… (incantations for orchestra), by award-winning composer and director Richard Prior. The piece is “a compact symphonic poem that explores a huge range of expression,” describes Prior. “It’s a journey through a vast range of dramatic musical landscapes, going from dark, brooding lyricism to ecstatic affirmations and resolutions.” As a resident of Atlanta for the past 10 years, and a music director at Emory University, Prior is no stranger to the ASO. “It adds an extraordinarily powerful dimension to the creative process when you are writing music for an orchestra that you really know,” said
On October 17 and 19, 2013, composer and Julliard faculty member Philip Lasser will premiere his piano concerto under the direction of guest conductor Miguel HarthBedoya featuring pianist Simone Dinnerstein as soloist. Lasser’s new work was composed for Dinnerstein to be premiered at Atlanta Symphony Hall. Lasser describes how the sound of the work and the pianist to perform it were both heavily influenced by Bach. “Simone and I both have such a mutual passion for Bach, and that was really a lot of the basis for the composition,” explained Lasser. “The whole piece is germinated from the Bach chorale, and many of the
harmonies of Bach that I love so much find their way into the piece.” As for the title? Well, that is something that Lasser intentionally leaves for the audience to figure out after hearing the piece. “I do not want to guide the audience, which is why I give a title that is descriptive but ambiguous so they can dream for themselves,” said Lasser. “I do, though, hope that my music communicates a deep sense of travel, memory, and personal experience. It is the story of a voyage.” The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra is all about “new” this season, but with the same amount of tradition and excellence that audiences have come to know, love and call their own. Welcome to the 2013-14 season, and enjoy tonight’s performance by your Atlanta Symphony Orchestra.
“ …my music communicates a deep sense of travel, memory, and personal experience” — Philip Lasser
Sean Ward is a former ASO Communications Intern. He is a senior at the University of Georgia studying Journalism and Music.

WHAT’S THAT SOUND? Three unusual instruments are used in this weeks performances. Can you hear them? Richard Prior’s premiere uses something called Chau Gongs (instead of chimes) and an Anvil. The work was commissioned by the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra.
The composer observes: “It adds an extraordinarily powerful dimension to the creative process when you are writing music for an orchestra and musicians you really know; an intensity and fervor that further feeds the fires of the imagination.”

Dr. Prior describes …of shadow and light… as “a compact symphonic poem, a journey through a range of dramatic musical landscapes. Musical ideas are continually transformed throughout the work in much the same way that characters evolve or are put into contrasting situations in a play or film.”

A merican Symphony, by Atlanta School of Composers member Adam Schoenberg, was commissioned and premiered by the Kansas City Symphony and its Music Director, Michael Stern. Mr. Schoenberg notes that his American Symphony “was inspired by the 2008 presidential election, where both parties asked the people to embrace change and make a difference.” Mr. Schoenberg adds: “While not a patriotic work, the symphony reflects a respect and responsibility for the great potential of our nation and a hunger to affect positive change. It is about our collective ability to restore hope within ourselves and our neighbors, both here and around the world.”

hmm, that sounds familiar... The Rachmaninov Piano Concerto No. 2 has been used in multiple films, including 1945’s Brief Encounter, 1950’s September Affair, Billy Wilder’s 1955 film The Seven Year Itch, and Clint Eastwood’s 2010 film Hereafter. It also appears as a theme in the 1975 ballad “All by Myself,” from Eric Carmen (Rachmaninov is credited as a writer). ollowing the disastrous premiere F of his Symphony No. 1 on March 27, 1897, Russian composer and pianist Sergei Rachmaninov lapsed into a profound depression. He vowed to give up composing forever.
riends encouraged Rachmaninov F to consult Dr. Nikolai Dahl, a Russian physician who employed hypnosis as part of his therapy. Thanks to Dr. Dahl, Rachmaninov was able to resume composing. Rachmaninov dedicated his Second Piano Concerto to Dr. Dahl. achmaninov, one of the greatest R pianists of all time, was the soloist in the Concerto’s November 9, 1901 premiere in Moscow. The Second Piano Concerto is brimming with virtuoso fireworks and unforgettable melodies, including one in the final movement which became the basis for a 1940s hit song, “Full Moon and Empty Arms.”

P
ianist Garrick Ohlsson is a favorite guest artist of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra.
Recent season highlights include performances of Busoni’s rarely programmed Piano Concerto with the European Union Youth Orchestra and Gianandrea Noseda, including an appearance at the Edinburgh International Festival. Concerts with the Cleveland Orchestra and Franz Welser-Möst will be reprised during the orchestra’s winter residency in Florida. Rachmaninov’s Concerto No. 3, conducted by Sir Mark Elder with the Chicago Symphony, is programmed in the winter, followed by a Kennedy Center appearance with the Iceland Symphony as part of the center’s Nordic Festival, and an east coast tour with the Swedish Chamber Orchestra.
A native of White Plains, N.Y., Mr. Ohlsson began his piano studies at the age of eight, at the Westchester Conservatory of Music; at 13 he entered The Juilliard School, in New York City. His distinguished teachers include most notably Claudio Arrau, Olga Barabini, Tom Lishman, Sascha Gorodnitzki, Rosina Lhévinne and Irma Wolpe. Mr. Ohlsson won First Prizes at the 1966 Busoni Competition in Italy and the 1968 Montréal Piano Competition, and in 1970 he won the Gold Medal at the International Chopin Competition in Warsaw, and remains the single American to have done so. Since then he has made nearly a dozen tours of Poland. Mr. Ohlsson was awarded the Avery Fisher Prize in 1994 and received the 1998 University Musical Society Distinguished Artist Award in Ann Arbor, MI.

Maurice Ravel’s Mother Goose was originally scored for Jeux de timbres à clavier, or a Keyboard Glockenspiel. This is a pretty uncommon instrument these days. Instead, our percussionists will be play this part on Orchestra Bells.
Soap & Barber The Barber Violin Concerto was commissioned by Samuel Fels in 1939 for his son. Fels had made his fortune in soap (Fels-Naptha). Barber privately nicknamed this piece “Concerto de Sapone,” (the Soap Concerto).

Ravel composed the duets in 1908 as a surprise gift for Mimi and Jean, children of his dear friends, Ida and Jean Godebski. Ravel loved to play with young Mimi and Jean, and often delighted them with his animated readings of various Mother Goose tales.
avel later arranged the Mother Goose piano R duet pieces for orchestra. Ravel noted: “(m)y intention of awakening the poetry of childhood in these pieces naturally led me to simplify my style and thin out my writing.” Despite Ravel’s typically self-effacing description, there is nothing simple about the magical atmosphere and charm he conjures in these exquisite orchestral miniatures.

The Concerto for Violin and Orchestra was the first major commission for the young American composer Samuel Barber.
Jean Sibelius completed his Symphony No. 2 in 1902. The Finnish composer led the Symphony’s world premiere in Helsinki on March 8 of that year.
American violinist Albert Spalding was the soloist in the world premiere on February 7, 1941, at the Academy of Music, accompanied by Eugene Ormandy and the Philadelphia Orchestra.
Sibelius composed the Symphony at a time when Finland was suffering increasing control and oppression by Russia.

The soaring lyricism of the opening two movements, coupled with the virtuoso fireworks of the finale, have made the Barber Violin Concerto one of his most popular works, for violinists and audiences alike.

Sibelius denied that his Symphony No. 2 contained any programmatic elements. Nevertheless, the Finnish people embraced the fiercely dramatic (and ultimately triumphant) work by their greatest composer as a message of hope. More than a century after its premiere, the Sibelius Symphony No. 2 remains a source of inspiration and pride for the Finnish people, as well as a mainstay of the international symphonic repertoire.

The first half of these concerts concludes with the world premiere of the Piano Concerto The Circle and the Child, by American composer Philip Lasser. Mr. Lasser composed the Concerto for this evening’s soloist, Simone Dinnerstein. Mr. Lasser explains: “At the core of my concerto is a Chorale by Johann Sebastian Bach, “Ihr Gestirn’, Ihr hohlen Lüfte” (“You stars in heaven, you vaulted sky)”. Bach weaves a beautiful harmonization through its small frame. Like an exquisite perfume, his Chorale emanates from every passage of my Concerto. One hears the chorale as an intimate confession from the piano dialoguing with itself recast as the fears and loves of a child.”
“The Circle is a powerful metaphor for life. Bach understood better than anyone that if pure music is to have a meaningful structure it can only do this by traveling away from a beginning, back to the beginning, through memory. My concerto travels also along such paths, revisiting memories colored by the experience of living.” INTERMISSION

Following the successful 1940 Leningrad premiere of Sergei Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet, the Kirov commissioned the Russian composer to write a new ballet, based upon the Cinderella fairy tale. But the onset of World War II delayed the first performance of Cinderella until 1945. Prokofiev noted: “I wanted to convey the poetic love between Cinderella and the Prince — the birth and flowering of that feeling, the obstacles thrown in its path, the realization of the dream.” Prokofiev achieved his goal with music of remarkable transparency, variety and beauty. This concert features excerpts from each of the Cinderella ballet’s three acts, arranged by tonight’s conductor Miguel Harth-Bedoya.

Mr. Flint, who has led the ASYO since 1979, also leads the ASO’s popular Family Concerts and its Symphony Street concerts for youngsters, and as the ASO’s Staff Conductor regularly conducts on the Classic Chastain pops series at Chastain Park.
Magic Circle Mime Company performs with virtually every major orchestra in North America and has performed on numerous occasions with the symphony orchestras of Atlanta, Detroit, Chicago, Montreal, Saint Louis, Seattle, and Toronto; the Cleveland Orchestra, Minnesota Orchestra, and Philadelphia Orchestra; and on more than half a dozen occasions at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts with the National Symphony Orchestra.
Mr. Flint believes the conductor’s job is not only to teach but to learn, and that has allowed him to cultivate exceptional musicianship from, specifically, the Youth Orchestra. “I always try to treat them the way I would want to be treated, and I don’t talk down to them; I don’t belittle them. I respect them for what they can do, and I respect them as people.” Born on Long Island, NY, Mr. Flint has a bachelor’s degree in music from Wittenberg University in Ohio. He received his Master’s degree in music in 1967 from the University of Washington in Seattle, while also serving as manager of the University Festival Opera Company and music director for the School of Drama. He later studied conducting under Otto-Werner Mueller. Mr. Flint has also led performances at Brevard Music Center, Sewanee Summer Music Center, Atlanta-Emory Orchestra, and the Southeastern Music Center. 52 Atlanta Symphony Orchestra | aso.org

First Fridays with the ASO
experience when they watch the ASO.
ne of my favorite things to do when I’m not on stage performing with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra (ASO) is attend other shows at venues such as The Masquerade. Seeing a great band on stage fills me with an incredible energy. It’s so powerful, I feel like I could take over the world — especially when my friends experience it with me. That’s the thing about music. Whether I’m watching or playing, it makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up. I want audiences to feel that same electrifying
With our new “First Friday” concert series, you can kick start your weekend with a blast. Swing over after work with some friends, have a few drinks, see a great show, and still be out in time to have the rest of your Friday night ahead of you. If I wasn’t already on stage, I’d definitely go with my friends for happy hour to watch one of the world’s best orchestras while everyone else fights rushhour traffic.
O
And remember, no tuxedos at these concerts. It’s a much more laid-back atmosphere. Plus, the programming is rad: the best orchestral music

in a short, one-hour concert for just 25 bucks — less than most of us spend on a Friday night in the city. It’s the perfect introduction to the ASO if you’re a newcomer, and it’s a refreshing approach if you’re a regular.
When you’re here, you are part of what’s happening on stage — you become part of the experience. The Orchestra feeds off of the energy of the people in the room, so no performance is ever the — Joseph McFadden same. It’s an opportunity to be part of something that

cannot be recreated. There is a chemistry in hall between those who are playing and those who are listening. Every night it’s different, but always great. Music is so much fun to listen to, and we’re one of the best bands in town. You know what’s not fun? Sitting in rush-hour traffic on a Friday. If you’re a music fan, you know nothing beats a live show. Check out the new “First Friday” concert series. It’s gonna be awesome.
