xxhey say you never forget your first love, and that appears to be true for Twyla Tharp’s Come Fly Away and the city of Atlanta. The Frank Sinatra-themed musical, which premiered at Atlanta’s Alliance Theatre in September 2009, returns this summer to the Fabulous Fox Theatre, presented by Theater of the Stars.

In keeping with its 50-plus-year mission to produce and present the best of Broadway musicals, Theatre of the Stars brings back the hit Aug. 2-7. The show debuted on Broadway in March 2010, and closed in September that same year.

The story is infused with well-known classics by Ol’ Blue Eyes, “That’s Life” and “My Way,” for example, and takes place in a packed 1940s-style nightclub, where eight characters dance

in and out of love. The characters play off one another and explore themes such as romance, friendship, platonic negotiation, coy encounter, temptation and one-night-stand. It’s likely that anyone experiencing the show will relate to some, if not many, of the situations and emotions explored. The cast is joined onstage by a 14-piece big band.

to the man who was a radio, television and film performer, as well as a concert star, producer, director and allaround showman, who captured people’s hearts and imaginations for more than 60 years.

Come Fly Away is produced on tour

by Nederlander Presentations, by special arrangement with the Frank Sinatra Family and Frank Sinatra Enterprises.

It features scenic design by James Youmans, costume design by Katherine Roth, lighting design by Donald Holder and sound design by Peter McBoyle. Additional arrangements and orchestrations are by Dave Pierce and Don Sebesky. Music supervision is by Dave Pierce.

dance musical Movin’ Out, set to the music and lyrics of Billy Joel; and The Times Are A-Changing, featuring Bob Dylan’s poetic lyrics, her choreography and the Atlanta Ballet. Atlanta Ballet performed her In the Upper Room in its 2008-09 season, and plans to do the world premiere of Tharpe’s The Princess and the Goblin in this season.

Tharp and Sinatra are no strangers in the night. In 1976, she created a duet for herself and Mikhail Baryshnikov for American Ballet Theatre titled Once More Frank. She choreographed 1982’s Nine Sinatra Songs and, in 1984, Sinatra Suite. Sinatra asked that the latter be performed when he received his Kennedy Center Honors Award. Come Fly Away’s score combines classic and newly discovered vocal performances from the Sinatra archives, along with his signature classics.

hen Glenn Rainey walks onstage as Nicely-Nicely Johnson in Guys and Dolls, chances are he’ll have at least a few friends in the audience cheering him on.

What was it about being onstage that compelled you to make acting a career?

I knew early on that it stirred something within me. There was something about being able to be someone else onstage that I loved. I was a band nerd in high school, and though not necessarily 12 EncoreAtlantA.com

unpopular, I gained more acceptance when my peers saw me perform. I knew it would become a huge part of my life.

Last year you earned two Suzi Bass Awards nominations for your work in Atlanta theater. What was it like being recognized for your work in two productions in the same year?

I was so honored to receive the nominations for leading actor and featured actor in a musical, and to win for leading actor playing Edna in Hairspray at the Atlanta Lyric Theatre Continued on page 50

Rainey grew up in Newnan and lives in Atlanta, where he’s built an impressive resume that includes work with the Atlanta Lyric Theatre, Alliance Theatre and Theater of the Stars. But he also has appeared in films such as Enchanted and The Shaggy Dog, and on Broadway in Disney’s Beauty and the Beast. We recently caught up with Rainey to talk about performing on the Great White Way, being recognized by his peers and why Guys and Dolls is such an enduring classic.

Dear Patrons, Subscribers and Friends: Welcome to Guys and Dolls, the fifth show of our 2011 season. This oddball romantic comedy introduces us to a cast of vivid legendary characters. There’s Sarah Brown, the upright and uptight “mission doll,” out to reform the evildoers of Times Square; Sky Masterson, the slick, high-rolling gambler; Adelaide, the chronically ill nightclub performer whose condition is based on the fact that she’s been engaged for 14 years to the same man; and Nathan Detroit, Adelaide’s devoted fiancé, always looking for a spot for his infamous floating crap game. A delightful set of characters and fantastic music make for a wonderful evening of musical theater. Please enjoy the unforgettable score by Frank Loesser, which includes the classics “Adelaide’s Lament,” “Luck Be a Lady Tonight” and “Sit Down, You’re Rockin’ the Boat.”

Where has the time gone? It seems like just yesterday we were producing our first show of the season, Joseph… and now, we’re down to our last show, the popular favorite, Annie (Jan. 14-22, 2012). As we’ve said all along, we are still planning to cast most of the adult and youth roles with local actors — we know it will be a great production. How long have you been a subscriber?

This is my 17th season as a Theater of the Stars subscriber. 1995 was our first year.

Who are the Foxy Ladies?

We have five in our group. We were all originally from LaGrange, but one member moved to South Carolina, drove down for one season but then had to drop out. Paula’s sister, Cheryl, took her place. Cheryl lives in Atlanta and the rest of us live in LaGrange.

How did the Foxy Ladies get started?

I have a high appreciation for the theater. My parents were both active in the theater.

My dad taught theater at Auburn University and was then the director for Theatre Jacksonville. Our whole family spent summers in Manteo, NC working at The Lost Colony outdoor drama. FRANK LOESSER (Music & Lyrics) One of America’s great composer/lyricists, Frank Loesser began his songwriting career during the Depression as a lyricist, contributing songs to Broadway revues and nightclub acts. His work with composer Irving Actman in the 1936 revue The Illustrator’s Show led to a songwriting contract in Hollywood, where he spent the next eleven years working with such composers as Burton Lane, Jule Styne, Arthur Schwartz and Hoagy Carmichael. Some of his film songs from that period include “Two Sleepy People,” “Jingle Jangle Jingle” and “I Don’t Want to Walk Without You.” The first song for which Loesser wrote both words and music was “Praise the Lord and Pass the Ammunition,” written during his World War II service. His Hollywood work after the war included the hit songs “Spring Will Be a Little Late This Year,” “A Slow Boat to China,” and the 1949 Oscarwinning song “Baby, It’s Cold Outside.”

In 1948 Loesser was approached by fledgling Broadway producers Cy Feuer and Ernest Martin to write music and lyrics to George Abbott’s libretto for an adaptation of the classic Brandon Thomas play Charley’s Aunt. The new musical, which starred Ray Bolger, was called Where’s Charley? and was a hit.

bios This led to Loesser’s next show, the hugely influential and successful Guys and Dolls (1950), also produced by Feuer and Martin, with a script was by Abe Burrows and Jo Swerling. In 1956 Loesser wrote the libretto, music and lyrics for his next show, The Most Happy Fella, adapted from Sidney Howard’s play, They Knew What They Wanted. This impressive score contains more than 30 musical numbers and makes extensive use of operatic techniques and forms, including recitative, arias, duets, trios and choral numbers. In 1960 he provided the score and was co-librettist for Greenwillow. In 1961, Loesser wrote the score for the Pulitzer Prize-winning How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. His last show, Pleasures and Palaces, closed in 1965 during outof-town tryouts.

JO SWERLING (Book) Born in Russia in 1897, Jo Swerling was a playwright, screenwriter and vaudeville sketch writer. Mr. Swerling’s long career began as a reporter and feature writer in New York and Chicago.

ABE BURROWS (Book) After studying to be a doctor and an accountant, Abe Burrows had a career in sales before becoming a successful radio scriptwriter and writer/performer of musical parody numbers. Guys and Dolls was his first Broadway liberetto. Among the musicals for which he provided librettos are Make a Wish, Can-Can and Silk Stockings (both with scores by Cole Porter), Say, Darling, and How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying (which he also directed; score

by Frank Loesser). His non-musical plays include Cactus Flower (wrote and directed) and Forty Carats (directed).

Mr. Manos has been in At­lanta for more than 40 years. He has produced more than 700 works of theater, ballet and opera. He has been recognized with nu­m er­o us civic awards, including the Atlanta Critics Award for the de­vel­op­ment of the art of the­a ter in Atlanta and the Gov­er­nor’s Award in the Arts. He has been instrumental in the creation of such organizations as the Winter Play Season, Grand Opera in the Park, Just Us The­ater Company and the Fall Film Fes­ti­val – just to name a few! During the early months of the Woodruff Arts Center, Mr. Manos was responsible for 12 pro­duc­tions of theater, ballet and opera in that facility.

Mr. Manos received the Coca-Cola Lifetime Achievement in the Arts Award from the Arts & Business Council of the Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce. In 2005, Mr. Manos was the first recipient of the GAELA Award, presented by the Atlanta Coalition of Performing Arts. In 2007, Mr. Manos was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Broadway League.

Mr. Manos was married for 45 years to Glenn Ryman Manos. He has two sons, Chris Jr. and Nick, a daughter, Ann, and is the very proud grandfather of seven grandsons and four granddaughters.

Mr. Manos is a graduate of the Westminster Schools in Atlanta and the University of North Carolina, where he was a Morehead Scholar.

His career spans three decades in leadership positions. In the fall of 2000, he returned to Atlanta to become the managing director of Theater of the Stars. In 2008, he assumed the role of president.

Mr. Manos has been heavily involved with the touring aspect of the company and has been the driving force behind many of the artistic and cultural marvels brought to the Theater of the Stars stage, including the world professional premiere of Disney's High School Musical, the co-productions of Deaf West’s Big River, The King And I with Sandy Duncan, Bombay Dreams and the newly re-imagined version of Les Misérables.

Mr. Manos is the founder of the Junior Theatre Festival, an event that takes place every January in Atlanta, and brings students from all over the world together to perform, learn and celebrate theater.

Mr. Manos and his wife, Laura, have been blessed with three children — Andy, Kate and Sam — and one crazy dog, Peach.

FOR YOUR INFORMATION The Theatre A fully restored 1929 “Movie Palace,” the Fox Theatre, with 4,678 seats, is a multiple-purpose facility, housing Broadway shows, ballet, symphonies, concerts, movies, and private corporate events.

Private Rooms The Fox Theatre has three private rental spaces, with accommodations for 25 to 1,200 guests. Our Egyptian Ballroom and Grand Salon are beautifully decorated and can be set up to your specifications. The brand new Landmarks Lounge is adjacent to the lobby and is perfect for a small pre-show and intermission event. All rooms include the Fox Theatre’s professional sales and coordination staff. The Box Office The Fox Theatre Box Office is located in the arcade entrance to the theatre. The Box Office is open for walk up ticket sales Monday-Friday, 10:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m., and Saturday, 10:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. The Fox Theatre Box Office is not open on Sundays unless there is a performance. During Events, the Box Office opens two hours prior to show time. Doors to the Fox open one hour prior to show time. Tickets for all performances at the Fox may be purchased at any TICKETMASTER outlet, by calling TICKETMASTER at 800.745.3000, or by visiting the Fox Theatre Box Office in person during regular Box Office hours.

Concessions Concession stands are located in the Spanish Room, adjacent to the main lobby, and on the mezzanine lobby level.

Restrooms Restrooms are located on the Main Lobby and Mezzanine Lobby levels. Restrooms are also located on the Gallery level. Restrooms for patrons who are physically challenged are located in the Spanish Room Gift Shop The Fox Theatre operates a gift shop selling history books, T-shirts, sweatshirts, and an assortment of other theatrerelated merchandise. The gift shop is located in the main lobby and is open at each performance.

Tours Tours of the Fox Theatre are available through the Atlanta Preservation Center. Tours are conducted Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays at 10:00 a.m. and Saturdays at 10:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. Tours begin in the Peachtree Street Arcade entrance to the theatre. For more information on tours and to confirm the tour schedule, please call the Atlanta Preservation Center at 404.688.3353.

In accordance with the Fulton County Clean Air Ordinance, the Fox Theatre is a smoke-free facility. Smoking is only permitted in designated areas.

Special Needs Ken Shook, Patron Services Director, is our liaison to the disabled community. He can be reached at 404.881.2118 and can provide information on such topics as the locations and prices of accessible seating and other programs for the disabled. The Fox Theatre also has a new brochure detailing all these programs for our patrons with special needs. They are available at the Guest Relations Table.

Fox Ambassadors are located at the Guest Relations Table in the main lobby at the Fox Theatre Merchandise Kiosk to offer their assistance, theatre information, and several rental items to enhance your performance enjoyment. An audio clarification device (Phonic Ear) is available for patrons with hearing disabilities. It is available, free of charge, on a firstcome, first-serve basis on the evening of a performance, or you may reserve a device by calling the Patron Services Director. A limited number of booster seats are also available free of charge. Binoculars are available for sale.

All items require a form of identification to be held until the item is returned.

Elevators Elevators are located at the north end of each lobby. The elevators are available during all performances and make it possible to access each lobby without the use of stairs.

Parking Parking is available within a four-block radius in all directions of the Fox Theatre. Advanced reserved parking is available for sale at the Fox Box Office or by calling TICKETMASTER at 800.745.3000. The Fox Theatre assumes no responsibility for vehicles parked in any of the privately owned parking lots operating in the Fox Theatre district.

Performance Notes All patrons, regardless of age, must have a ticket in order to be admitted to the theatre. Please be aware that not all events are suitable for children. Infants will not be admitted to adult programs/performances. Parents will be asked to remove children who create a disturbance.

Latecomers will be seated at the discretion of the management, in conjunction with the wishes of the producers.

Please turn off all pagers and cell phones prior to the beginning of each performance. Please limit conversation during the performances.

Camera and recording devices are strictly prohibited.

Lost and Found Lost and Found items are turned in to the House Manager’s office. To check on lost items, please call the House Manager at 404.881.2075. Lost and Found items will be retained for 30 days.

etiquette 1. Arrive early. If you are late, you may be held out or reseated until an appropriate time for you to get to your assigned seat. People who arrive late disturb the performers on stage and audience members. It is best to arrive about 30 minutes early so that you have time to purchase concessions, find your seat, and read the program before the show starts.

2. Take care of personal needs (drinks of water or restroom) because you should not leave your seat until the intermission or until the performance ends.

3. Please sit in the seat you are assigned so you do not cause confusion for other audience members.

4. Please silence or turn off all electronic devices, including cell phones, beepers, and watch alarms.

You’ll be embarrassed if it goes off in the middle of a tense moment of the show and it will break the mood for everyone. We encourage you to share your experience at the Fox via social media, but please refrain from doing so or texting during performances; the glow from your device is distracting.

5. Most shows do not allow photography of any kind. Flash photography inside the theatre is never allowed as it is a distraction to those around you and a danger to the performers.

6. The overture is part of the performance. Please cease talking at this point.

7. The sound system for each show is provided by the touring production. Unfortunately, many variables exist that may occasionally hinder sound quality. Please let an usher know if you are having trouble hearing. Adjustments may be able to be made or an assisted listening device can be provided.

8. Dear Lovebirds, when you lean your heads together, you block the view of the people behind you. Please consider the people that will be seated behind you when choosing whether or not to wear a hat or what hair style you choose.

8. Please refrain from talking, humming, or singing along with the show, except when encouraged to do so by the artist or show.

9. Please wait for an appropriate moment to dig something out of your pocket or bag.

10. Go easy with the perfume and cologne, many people are highly allergic.

11. If you need assistance during the show, please go to your nearest volunteer usher. If additional assistance is needed the usher will get the appropriate person to further help you.

12. Yes, the parking lot gets busy and public transportation is tricky, but leaving while the show is in progress or before the actors have taken their final bows is discourteous. Wait until it is over and then exit with the rest of the audience.

13. Just be courteous and everyone will enjoy the show.

Fox fun facts: Rockin’ the Fox

In July 1976, Lynyrd Skynyrd performed for three consecutive nights, recorded the album One More from the Road, and donated $5,000 toward the Save the Fox campaign. In February 1993, the band played another three nights, one of which was broadcast on pay-per-view TV. Here are some other fun facts: The Rolling Stones have performed at the Fox twice. In June 1978, the show was originally billed as “The Cockroaches” so as not to reveal the true performers before the concert announcement.

Bette Midler was scheduled to perform for three nights in February 1983. According to concert promoter Alex Cooley, when she first arrived in her dressing room, Midler claimed that someone had died in that space and a ghost was present. She refused to perform. But after moving to another dressing room, she was content enough to go on stage.

On New Year’s Day 2005, Broadway on Ice ice skating stars Nancy Kerrigan and Rudy Galindo, along with Broadway musical star Leslie Uggams, performed on the Fox stage.

Creating the impromptu ice rink was an overnight process of repetitiously spraying water and freezing it.

The Rolling Stones appeared next on October 26, 1981, for a standingroom only crowd. Before the show, the band had travelled to Savannah for a day trip and, due to dense fog in Atlanta, they were rerouted to Macon.

I know you’ve performed on Broadway, which is every actor’s dream. What was it like making that leap from Atlanta theater to the Great White Way? I truly believe that we are on a predestined path, and that being on Broadway was just meant to be for me.

But it certainly did not come without a lot of hard work, help from friends and colleagues and “paying dues.” I didn’t move to New York until I was 39 years old. Through a series of serendipitous circumstances, I eventually ended up on 50 EncoreAtlantA.com

Broadway. Making my Broadway debut at the Palace Theatre is something I hold dear and will never forget.

Guys and Dolls is more than 60 years old. Why does it remain so popular?

Frank Loesser, I believe, was a musical genius. He, along with his book collaborators, had the ability to write character-driven music that serves his musicals brilliantly and tells the story in an essential and efficient way. Guys and Dolls is just forever a beloved classic. I can’t believe it’s my first time doing the show and playing Nicely.

I’ve been singing “Sit Down You’re Rockin’ the Boat” for auditions since I was in my 20s. To finally sing it to audiences onstage is thrilling!

How do you feel the Atlanta theater scene has evolved since you started out as a performer?

It continues to grow by leaps and bounds every year, and it’s filled with artistry and passion. I’m honored to be a member, and I cherish the relationships I’ve made. Thanks for giving me this opportunity to put it on record. And thank you, audience members, for continuing to support live theater.

The 2nd Annual Tony Awards Viewing Party O

n June 12, Atlanta theater lovers donned their Sunday best and flocked to the Fox Theatre for the 2nd Annual Tony Awards Viewing Party, co-hosted by Encore Atlanta magazine and the Fox Theatre. During the VIP pre-party, a silent auction raised more than $20,000 to benefit the Fox Theatre’s educational outreach programs and UNICEF’s Believe in Zero campaign. The live Tony Awards broadcast was hosted by Atlanta TV legend Bill Tush and Dave FM’s Mara Davis. Local performers provided additional entertainment.

“What an incredible night — fantastic food, great entertainment and a successful silent auction,” said Encore Atlanta Publisher Sherry White, adding, “I’m so proud of the partnership we’ve forged with the Fox Theatre to raise much-needed funds for these two worthy charities.”
