Maria and the von Trapp children in The Sound of Music

The sweet sound of success

Steady work among Moses’ favorite things By Kathy Janich

I

n his first professional stage role, Burke Moses “wore orange spandex, danced around and sweated. A lot.” He was a 20ish song-and-dance man in a revue titled Dance, Dance, Dance at Six Flags Over Mid-America in Eureka, Mo. “It was the hardest job I ever had and the best learning experience I ever had,” says Moses, who may wear lederhosen or military dress as Captain von Trapp in Theater of the Stars’ The Sound of Music, but certainly not spandex. This is the third time he’ll blow the bosun’s whistle as the bristly, detached ex-navy captain raising seven enthusiastic children in Salzburg,

Austria, on the eve of World War II. He first played the role for Theater of the Stars in 2003 and, more recently, did a yearlong run at the Princess of Wales Theatre in Toronto. The Captain is not an easy nut to crack, Moses, now 45, says. “He is pretty much a stiff, and you have to show him grow,” the actor told BroadwayWorld.com near the end of the 2009-10 Toronto run. “He really changes more than anyone in the show. ...The famous scene where he sings ‘The Sound of Music’ to the children and they have their little reunion and hug, is particularly challenging.” He describes von Trapp as “a man suffering from great loss,” saying “he lives with a cloud over his head and he can’t see out of it. Finally color comes back into his life in the form of this … nun.” Atlanta’s Performing Arts Publication 9

10 EncoreAtlantA.com

Truth vs. fiction The musical is based on the first part of the book The Story of the Trapp Family Singers (1949) by Maria Augusta Trapp, but takes more than a little dramatic license. For example: • There were 10 von Trapp children. And their names, ages and genders were changed. • Maria married the Captain in 1927, 11 years before the Nazis goose-stepped into Austria. In the musical, the invasion occurs days after their honeymoon. • Maria fell in love with the children at first sight; her love for the Captain developed over time. • The real-life Captain had a whistle but wasn’t the stern commander he’s portrayed to be. “He did use that whistle,” his youngest child, Maria, once said. “When we heard this, we stormed to him, but we never had to march or stand at attention.”

York’s popular and prestigious Encores! concert series. In addition to spending this summer in the shadow of TOTS’ “Austrian alps,” Moses will be in Sacramento doing Dirty Rotten Scoundrels and in Boston Continued on page 46

Joan Marcus

The Captain also is “a damn fine baritone,” says the actor, ever unwilling to pass up a punch line. Moses was born in New York and grew up in Evanston, Ill., outside Chicago. He attended college at Carnegie Mellon University, a wellknown theater school in Pittsburgh. At some point in his post-theme park life, he found himself in Boston at a talent search for the Franco Zeffirelli movie Endless Love. Two weeks later, he was at the Minskoff Theater in New York, auditioning for Leonard Bernstein, who was reviving West Side Story. He wasn’t hired, but soon found himself in a guest role on TV’s “Spenser for Hire” — playing a fitness trainer killed upside-down in gravity boots. He’s been a working actor — never a waiter, gofer or delivery boy — ever since. Moses may look familiar from his TV work, which has included the daytime dramas “Loving,” “One Life to Live” and “As the World Turns,” and he has couple of commercials in rotation (Autotrader.com is one), but he’s a Broadway boy at heart. He created the comically obtuse Gaston in Beauty and the Beast, earning a Theatre World Award and Drama Desk nomination, and he’s often the go-to guy when an original leading man leaves a Broadway cast. He’s done Sky Masterson in Guys and Dolls and Fred Graham in Kiss Me, Kate. He’s also sung with the New York City Opera, emoted with the New York Shakespeare Festival and did a dandy Lil’ Abner when the 1956 musical was staged for New

t’s safe to say, there are millions of little girls around the world who dream of one day acting, singing and/or dancing on Broadway. After all, the bright lights, the razzle-dazzle costumes, and the thrill of audience appreciation provide an infectious adrenaline rush many performers are powerless to resist. But what happens to those theater lovers who don’t quite have what it takes to make it on the Great White Way, yet still want to work in showbiz? In the case of Atlanta native Jennifer Lott, they go behind the scenes. 12 EncoreAtlantA.com

Lott has been the national marketing and press representative for the North American tour of CATS for the past four years now — a dream job for a woman who grew up steeped in Atlanta’s rich theater scene. “I was introduced to live performance very early in life,” Lott recalls. “My parents took my sister and me to Broadway shows at the Fox and the Center for Puppetry Arts, and I remember seeing and being in musicals at St. Timothy United Methodist Church. I joined the Young Singers of Callanwolde at about Continued on page 50

Authors

RICHARD RODGERS (Music) 1902-79 began his professional career in 1920 with a series of musicals for Broadway, London and Hollywood written with lyricist Lorenz Hart. Among their greatest: On Your Toes (1936), Babes in Arms (1937), The Boys From Syracuse (1938) and Pal Joey (1940). The Rodgers & Hart partnership came to an end with the death of Lorenz Hart in 1943, at the age of 48. Earlier that year Rodgers had joined forces with lyricist and author Oscar Hammerstein II, whose work in the field of operetta throughout the ‘20s and ‘30s had been as innovative as Rodgers’ own accomplishments in the field of musical comedy. Oklahoma! (1943), the first Rodgers & Hammerstein musical, was also the first of a new genre,

bios the musical play, representing a unique fusion of Rodgers’ musical comedy and Hammerstein’s operetta. It also marked the beginning of the most successful partnership in Broadway musical history, and was followed by Carousel (1945), Allegro (1947), South Pacific (1949), The King and I (1951), Me and Juliet (1953), Pipe Dream (1955), Flower Drum Song (1958) and The Sound of Music (1959). The team wrote one movie musical, State Fair (1945; adapted to the stage, 1995), and one for television, Cinderella (1957; remade in 1965 and 1997). Collectively, the Rodgers & Hammerstein musicals earned 34 Tony Awards, 15 Academy Awards, two Pulitzer Prizes and two Grammy Awards. In 1998 Rodgers & Hammerstein were cited by Time Magazine and CBS News as among the 20 most influential artists of the 20th century, and in 1999 they were jointly commemorated on a U.S. postage stamp. Despite Hammerstein’s death in 1960, Rodgers continued to write for the Broadway stage. His first solo entry, No Strings in 1962, earned him two Tony Awards for music and lyrics, and was followed by Do I Hear a Waltz? (1965, lyrics by Stephen Sondheim), Two by Two (1970, lyrics by Martin Charnin), Rex (1976, lyrics by Sheldon Harnick) and I Remember Mama (1979, lyrics by Martin Charnin and Raymond Jessel). Richard Rodgers died at home in New York City on December 30, 1979, at the age of 77. On March 27, 1990, he was honored posthumously with Broadway’s highest accolade when the 46th Street Theatre, owned and operated by the Nederlander Organization, was renamed The Richard Rodgers Theatre, home to The Richard Rodgers Gallery, which honors the composer’s life and works. OSCAR HAMMERSTEIN, II (Lyrics) In the 100-year history of the American musical, two works stand above all others in their development of the art form: Show Boat and Oklahoma! The author of both was Oscar Hammerstein II (1895-1960). Born into a theatrical dynasty headed by his

grandfather and namesake, Hammerstein was determined to work in the theatre, a course he pursued despite earning a law degree from Columbia University. He began his stage career as a playwright, soon turning to librettos and lyrics written for some of the greatest composers of his day. His innovations breathed new life into the moribund art form of operetta with such classics as Rose-Marie (music by Rudolf Friml), The Desert Song (Sigmund Romberg), The New Moon (Romberg) and Song of the Flame (George Gershwin.) Hammerstein and Jerome Kern wrote eight musicals together, including Sweet Adeline, Music in the Air and their masterpiece, Show Boat. His last musical before embarking on an exclusive partnership with Richard Rodgers was Carmen Jones, an all-black revision of Bizet’s tragic opera. In 1943, Hammerstein, pioneer in the field of operetta, joined forces with Richard Rodgers who had, for the previous 25 years, taken great strides in the field of musical comedy with his longtime partner, Lorenz Hart. The first Rodgers & Hammerstein collaboration, Oklahoma!, merged the two styles into a completely new genre -- the musical play -- and simultaneously launched the most successful partnership in the American musical theatre. Over the next 17 years Rodgers & Hammerstein wrote nine Broadway musicals: Carousel, Allegro, South Pacific, The King and I, Me and Juliet, Pipe Dream, Flower Drum Song and The Sound of Music. They also wrote a movie musical (State Fair) and one for television (Cinderella). Collectively their works earned 34 Tony Awards, 15 Academy Awards, two Pulitzer Prizes and two Grammy Awards. On Aug. 23, 1960, Oscar Hammerstein II died at his farm in Doylestown, Pa. The Sound of Music had been his last work for the theatre; “Edelweiss” was the last lyric he wrote. HOWARD LINDSAY & RUSSEL CROUSE (Book) The Lindsay and Crouse partnership stands today as the longest collaboration of any writers in theatrical history, lasting Atlanta’s Performing Arts Publication 29

bios for 32 years. Howard Lindsay was born in 1889 and died in 1968. He became an actor at 19 and went on to become a successful Broadway playwright and director. Russel Crouse was born in 1893 and died in 1966. After serving in the Navy, he worked on New York newspapers, gaining his first renown through a signed column in the Post. In 1932 he became head of the publicity department for the Theatre Guild and in 1933 wrote his first Broadway show, collaborating with Corey Ford on the musical comedy Hold Your Horses. From 1934 on, Crouse wrote only with Lindsay. Their hits include The Sound Of Music (with a score by Rodgers and Hammerstein); Anything Goes and Red, Hot and Blue (with scores by Cole Porter); Call Me Madam (score by Irving Berlin); the long-running play Life With Father (which originally starred Lindsay); the Pulitzer Prize winning State Of The Union; and The Great Sebastians, written for the Lunts. Their producing credits included The Hasty Heart, Detective Story and Arsenic and Old Lace.

Maria, Captain von Trapp and the von Trapp children in The Sound of Music.

helping develop a new musical titled Johnny Baseball. He plays Babe Ruth (“I slick down my hair and don’t worry about the nose”) in the show, which blames the Red Sox’ storied World Series curse on its history of racism, rather than its sale of Ruth to the Yankees. Moses’ Sound of Music history doesn’t stretch much past 2003. He remembers the 1965 movie only vaguely and says he’s never seen the show onstage. His experience is a lifetime removed from that of his TOTS boss, producer Christopher B. Manos, who first saw the show in 1959, about a month after Mary Martin found her favorite things at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre. At the time, Manos didn’t particularly care for it. That has changed. “It reaches all ages,” Manos says now. “I don’t think I know of another piece that does that.” With Manos at the helm, the 57-yearold TOTS has staged The Sound of Music nine times, beginning in 1964 and picking up this summer. He’s not alone in his evolving appreciation.

“There is a timeliness to The Sound of Music that continues to amaze me,” says Ted Chapin, president and executive director of the Rodgers & Hammerstein Organization in New York. “Coming as it did at the very end of the [Rodgers & Hammerstein] collaboration, it is in many ways a musical recapitulation of their career — almost old-fashioned in its modernity, it just tells a deeply satisfying story with an extraordinary collection of songs. I am not sure that Mr. Rodgers or Mr. Hammerstein would have predicted the worldwide phenomenon they created, but I bet they would be pleased.” Manos also is pleased that it keeps bringing in the crowds. “It’s a wonderful thing to take your daughter or son to, or your grandkids,” he says. “And hopefully, once we’ve got them in the theater, we’ve got them for life.” Kathy Janich is an Atlanta theater artist and freelance writer. After years in daily newspapers, she’s found a joyous second career as an artistic associate at Atlanta’s Synchronicity Theatre, synchrotheatre.com.

Fox fun facts:

furniture collection The Atlanta Fox furniture collection is the largest cache of original furniture that exists in any of the remaining Fox Theatres from coast to coast. Some Fox fun furniture facts: The Fox furnishings were personally procured by Eva Fox, wife of movie and theatre mogul William Fox. Much of the custom Fox furniture pieces were produced by Ketcham & Rothschild’s team of immigrant craftsmen, who were skilled in carving, gilding and upholstery. Many of the pieces in the collection were hand carved, gilded and painted, while a few may have been machine carved or mass-produced.

Although most of the furniture was custom-made, some items were provided by Ketcham & Rothschild’s 1929 standard inventory and sold by Mandel Brothers of Chicago, a leading retailer in the U.S. at the time. With over 300 shows and an estimated 750,000 visitors each year, the collection is a living testament to the exceptional craftsmanship of Ketcham & Rothschild’s workforce in the late 1920s. In 2006, Aaron Appraisal Services assessed the historic Fox furniture collection, revealing the history behind

the American furniture manufacturer, Ketcham & Rothschild. This valuable furniture collection is lovingly maintained by the Fox Theatre’s Restoration Department, and is annually treated on-site by experienced furniture conservators. Atlanta’s Performing Arts Publication 47

GOLDEN RULES The following brief, but important article has been published to assist in audience etiquette. To this day we get at least one phone call a week asking for reprint rights. These calls and letters come from orchestras and theaters, opera and ballet companies all over the United States and Canada, big and little troupes alike. The message, telegraphed between the lines, seems to be an S.O.S.: American audiences are out of control. Are they? Here’s a refresher course. Please read on, and remember, part of one’s pact as an audience member is to take seriously the pleasure of others, a responsibility fulfilled by quietly attentive (or silently inattentive) and selfcontained behavior. After all, you can be as demonstrative as you want during bows and curtain calls. 1. Go easy with the atomizer; many people are highly allergic to perfume and cologne. 2. If you bring a child, make sure etiquette is part of the experience. Children love learning new things. 3. Unwrap all candies and cough drops before the curtain goes up or the concert begins. 4. Make sure cell phones, beepers, and watch alarms are OFF. And don't jangle the bangles. 5. The overture is part of the performance. Please cease talking at this point. 6. Note to lovebirds: When you lean your heads together, you block the view of the person behind you. Leaning forward also blocks the view. 7. THOU SHALT NOT TALK, or hum, or sing along, or beat time with a body part. 8. Force yourself to wait for a pause or intermission before rifling through a purse, backpack or shopping bag. 9. Yes, the parking lot gets busy and public transportation is tricky, but leaving while the show is in progress is discourteous. 10. Honor the old standby: Do unto others, as you would have them do unto you.

Jennifer L. Lott (center left) with the 1995 cast of CATS at the Tennessee Performing Arts Center in Nashville.

(who has a cat named after Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats author T.S. Eliot) points to its accessible nature and her desire to expose young audiences to musical theater, just as her parents exposed her to it decades ago. “CATS is a perfect gateway musical,” she insists. “If you like dancing, there is fabulous dancing. If you like singing, the songs are memorable. There’s something in it for everyone. It’s like comfort food — nothing controversial, just good clean fun — but at the end of the day it still has such a wonderful message: listen to and respect your elders, and always remember that everyone is someone.” Bret Love has been covering Atlanta’s arts and entertainment scene since 1993 for a variety of local, national and international publications. He also performs regularly with Jackpie Improv at Relapse Theatre in Midtown.

Continued from page 12 [age] nine or 10, and then was very active in the Clarkston High School chorus. I loved every minute of it!” After graduating from Clarkston, Lott went on to take acting at Vanderbilt with the intention of becoming a theater minor, but soon came to a lifealtering revelation. “I was terrible!” she confesses. “I loved being on stage, was a great background member and could sing well enough, but found I was much better behind the scenes.” Over the course of completing her degree, Lott took a few marketing classes and quickly realized it suited her. A summer internship with the Nashville Shakespeare Festival led to contacts with the Tennessee Performing Arts Center, where she was hired upon graduation to market and promote touring Broadway shows. After eight years in Nashville and four working with Baltimore’s Hippodrome Theater, she landed her current job with CATS and eventually moved back to Atlanta. Lott describes the gig as a dream come true. “I saw CATS during high school at the Fabulous Fox,” she warmly recalls. “And it always stayed with me. All Broadway shows involve acting, dancing and singing, but this one involves two and a half hours of high-energy dancing and singing at the same time. These cast members are in incredible shape. I always start a diet immediately after spending time with them!” Asked why the Andrew Lloyd Webber classic remains her favorite Broadway show after 16 years in the business, Lott

For James, minimally invasive surgery meant smaller incisions, quicker recovery, and more giggles.

At Saint Joseph’s Hospital, we know that there’s more to our patients than just being patients. So our compassionate approach considers not just your body, but your whole life. This has driven us to pioneer less-invasive technology, to go from research to cure faster, and to lead in multiple specialties. Which may be why we’ve won more top national awards than any other Atlanta hospital. Nobody chooses to be a patient, but at the hospital where compassion has driven 130 years of innovation, you don’t have to feel like one either.
