THE SUN WILL COME OUT IN MARCH, WHEN ANNIE ARRIVES IN NASHVILLE
STORY BY Robert ViagasThe new national touring company of the musical Annie is headed to Tennessee Performing Arts Center® March 27-30.
What Is the Story of Annie? Based on the beloved comic strip Little Orphan Annie, the Tony-winning 1977 musical tells the story of a plucky red-headed orphan who escapes her orphanage and sets out to find her long-lost parents, who she believes are still alive. She gets unexpected help from billionaire Oliver Warbucks, but faces a plot by Miss Hannigan, the evil manager of the orphanage, who is determined to stop her.
Why Was Annie Such a Hit? The original comic strip launched during the Great Depression. Annie’s persistent optimism in the face of terrible troubles struck a positive chord with the public. When the musical opened in the mid-1970s, the economy was again in trouble, though not so severely, and the public again found the story to be a way to lift their spirits. The song “Tomorrow” perfectly captures Annie’s chin-up outlook on life.
Who Wrote Annie? The show has music by Charles Strouse (Bye Bye Birdie), lyrics by Martin Charnin (Two by Two), and a book by Thomas Meehan (Hairspray, The Producers, the latter with Mel Brooks). Songs include “It’s the Hard Knock Life,” “Maybe,” “Easy Street” and the standard, “Tomorrow.”
When Was Annie on Broadway? The original production tried out at Goodspeed Opera House in Connecticut in the summer of 1976 and opened on Broadway
April 21, 1977, winning seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical. The show went on to run 2,377 performances. The original production starred Andrea McArdle as Annie, Dorothy Loudon as Miss Hannigan, and Reid Shelton as Daddy Warbucks.
Has Annie Ever Been Revived on Broadway? Twice: In 1997 and again in 2012. Did Annie Get a Sequel? Yes, three! Annie 2: Miss Hannigan’s Revenge closed after a tryout in Washington DC in 1989. Annie Warbucks opened Off-Broadway in 1993 and ran 200 performances. There was also a TV movie sequel in 1995, Annie: A Royal Adventure!
Was Annie Made Into a Movie? Yes, several times, both as a feature film and TV movies. The feature was released in 1982 with Aileen Quinn as Annie, plus a supporting cast of Broadway veterans: Carol Burnett as Miss Hannigan, Albert Finney as Daddy Warbucks, Ann Reinking as Grace Farrell, Tim Curry as Rooster, and Bernadette Peters as Lily. A 1999 Disney TV movie starred Alicia Morton as Annie, with Victor Garber as Daddy Warbucks, Kathy Bates as Miss Hannigan, Audra McDonald as Grace Farrell, Alan Cumming as Rooster, and Kristin Chenoweth as Lily. A 2011 TV movie starred Quvenzhané Wallis as Annie with Will Smith as Daddy Warbucks. NBC hosted a live broadcast in 2021, starring Celina Smith as Annie, Harry Connick Jr. as Oliver Warbucks, Taraji P. Henson as Miss Hannigan, Tituss Burgess as Rooster and Megan Hilty as Lily St. Regis.
