Mr. Spano also champions the Atlanta School of Composers, his commitment to nurturing and championing music through multi-year partnerships, defining a new generation of American composers. Mr. Spano has conducted the great orchestras of North America, including those in Boston, Chicago, Cleveland, Los Angeles, New York, Philadelphia and San Francisco. Overseas, he has led the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Orchestra Filarmonica della Scala, Czech Philharmonic, Frankfurt Radio Sinfonie Orchestra, BBC Symphony Orchestra, BBC Scottish, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, New Japan Philharmonic and Tonhalle Orchester. He has conducted the Chicago, Houston, Santa Fe, Royal Opera at Covent Garden and Welsh National Operas. In August 2005, he conducted Wagner’s Der Ring des Nibelungen at Seattle Opera, and returned for the cycle in August 2009. With a discography of 12 critically acclaimed recordings for Telarc and Deutsche Grammophon made over six years, Robert Spano has garnered six Grammy Awards. Musical America’s 2008 Conductor of the Year, Mr. Spano was Artistic Director of the Ojai Festival in 2006, Director of the Festival of Contemporary Music at the Boston Symphony Orchestra’s Tanglewood Music Center in 2003 and 2004, and from 1996 to 2004 was Music Director of the Brooklyn Philharmonic. to spend the past two hours talking about a decade of changes in her life: Leaving the world’s great opera stages. A painful, drawnout divorce. And twenty-nine months in hospitals and treatment for cancer, which accounts for her stylish short-cropped hair. “So much loss,” she says, grasping at where to begin. The deep well of pain she struggled through is nearly palpable, but her smile and Midwest honesty reassure that she is an amazing survivor. Atlanta Symphony Orchestra audiences will remember McNair as a frequent soloist (and Grammy winner) in Bach, Mozart and Brahms with the late Robert Shaw, who discovered her as a graduate student at Indiana University. This New Year’s Eve she, the ASO and conductor Michael Krajewski perform Great American Songbook selections by Irving Berlin and Rodgers and Hammerstein. “When I sing this repertory I feel it’s what I was put here to sing. Not to say I didn’t love Bach, Mozart, Brahms when I was doing that,” she says, between sips of soup. “But on my twentieth opera anniversary I decided to wrap that in a beautiful box, put it on a shelf and honor it. It was a pleasure-driven choice.”

“I was going to have to change my repertory anyway, switch out Susanna [in The Marriage of Figaro] for the Countess,” she says of the eventual career move most sopranos make from younger to more mature roles. “I imagined a piano with a stack of opera on one side and Sondheim, Bernstein and Kurt Weill on the other. It was crystal clear where my heart was going to take me.”

This holiday season, The Coca-Cola Company will help refresh patrons of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra with its Coca-Cola Santa, created by artist Haddon Sundblom in the 1930s. Sunblom’s depiction of Santa is given credit for both standardizing and humanizing the character of “Father Christmas.” Before Sundblom created the popular, modern-day image of a jolly, friendly Santa Claus, Saint Nicholas was portrayed differently within various regions and cultures. Coca-Cola decided to link Santa Claus and Christmas to its flagship soft drink, Coca-Cola, because people during the 1930s era commonly regarded Coca-Cola as a beverage for hot, summer days. Sundblom created more than 40 Coca-Cola Santa paintings between 1931 and 1964 that appeared in print ads, billboards, and beverage cartons — some of which are on display in the Woodruff Arts Center gallery this season. The Coca-Cola Company is the world’s largest beverage company, offering consumers more than 450 sparkling and still brands. Along with Coca-Cola, the Company’s portfolio includes 12 other major brands, including Diet Coke, Fanta, Sprite, Coca-Cola Zero, vitaminwater, Powerade, Minute Maid and Georgia Coffee. The Company supports a wide range of philanthropic projects in Georgia and around the globe, including initiatives that help protect the environment, conserve resources, preserve the arts, and enhance the economic development of the communities in which it operates. Nowell, Nowell, born is the King of Israel! They lookèd up and saw a star, Shining in the east, beyond them far; And to the earth it gave great light, And so it continued both day and night. Nowell, Nowell, born is the King of Israel! Then let us all with one accord Sing praises to our heav’nly Lord, That hath made heav’n and earth of naught, And with his blood mankind hath bought. Nowell, Nowell, born is the King of Israel!

The ASO Chorus, 200 voices strong, made its debut on September 24, 1970. It performs large choral-symphonic works with the full orchestra, under the batons of ASO Music Director Robert Spano and ASO Principal Guest Conductor Donald Runnicles. MOREHOUSE COLLEGE GLEE CLUB, Dr. David Morrow, Director

E

mbracing a tradition of musical excellence and achievement, the Morehouse College Glee Club is the official singing organization of Morehouse College, on call to serve the college’s president throughout the year. Its members have earned such honors as the Merrill Travel Study Award for overseas experience, a listing in Who’s Who Among American Colleges and Universities, and memberships in Phi Beta Kappa. All receive no academic credit, but sing as a labor of love. Along with local concerts, the Glee Club makes an annual spring tour of 10 to 15 cities. In the early years of the 20th century, Georgia Starr, a music professor at what was then Atlanta Baptist College, directed a choral ensemble of 10 to 12 students and an orchestra of five to six students. Kemper Harreld assumed directorship of these ensembles in 1911, officially Morehouse College Glee Club founding the Glee Club. He is credited with initiating the Glee Club’s strong tradition of excellence and passing it on to its members. Wendell Whalum took the helm as the Glee Club’s director in 1953. Under his direction the Glee Club performed for the funeral services of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and in the Second International Choral Festival at New York’s Lincoln Center, made a month-long tour of five African countries, performed for the inauguration of President Jimmy Carter, and sang in the East Room of the White House with Coretta Scott King. “ Even in McNair’s new musicaltheater life, Robert Shaw’s influence lasts.”

Not clear, and in fact a shock, was that her husband was ready to depart their marriage. While still in that emotional tailspin, cancer arrived, brutally and aggressively, with the news that she probably had only six months to live. “Cancer, compared to divorce, was a vacation,” she says, without a hint of irony. “It was actually a cure for depression and despair and hopelessness.” And, in the end, it made her “want to live big. And know that every single day is a gift.”

me to be a musician with integrity—my one word for his musicianship. I credit him that I have a singing career at all. He gave me so many chances to get it right.”

A singer and a fiddler (her violin sits next to her) she is back at Indiana University, teaching. “And in my next life I would like to study comparative world religions. I did go to Union Theological Seminary one semester. That was a brain massage! There is a yearning in my soul to do something that helps the world. Oh, I know, that sounds like a Miss America pageant,” she laughs, admitting that she was crowned 1973 Lexington Ohio Township Fire Queen.

We split a slice of strawberry-rhubarb pie. “Remember that dialogue in the movie Broadcast News: ‘Whadda you do when real life exceeds your dreams?’ ‘Keep it to yourself!’ Well, my real life has exceeded my dreams.” And anyone who hears Sylvia McNair’s magical voice spinning warmly around whatever she chooses to sing is glad she doesn’t keep it to herself.

Even in McNair’s new musical-theater life, Robert Shaw’s influence lasts. At a private reception after his 1999 memorial the family gave her one of his famous blue rehearsal shirts. “It just hangs in my closet to remind

“I had to learn how to do opera, how to make my voice do opera. But musical theater just falls out of me.” So much so that she crafted a one-woman, “Subject to Change” (“the story of my life”) which includes Stephen Sondheim’s “Everybody Says Don’t (But I Say Do)” (“my own personal anthem”).

Tickets to Sylvia McNair’s New Year’s Eve performance, Thursday, December 31, at 8 pm, are available at www.atlantasymphony.org and 404.733.5000. Writer Margaret Shakespeare contributes regularly to Encore. She lives in New York City and the farmlands of Long Island.

galleryASO ASO-Yo-Yo Ma World Premiere Weekend! The world premiere of Angel Lam’s Awakening from a Disappearing Garden for Cello and Orchestra, written for and performed by Yo-Yo Ma, revealed a hauntingly surreal work. The ASO’s signature Theater of a Concert presentation of Stravinsky’s opera The Nightingale, featuring soprano Celena Shafer (bottom of photo) as the Nightingale and the ASO Chamber Chorus, was a formidable companion piece. Three weeks later the ASO performed the program at Carnegie Hall.

Hitting their Marx ASO subscribers Albert and Jeanie Marx were all smiles when they met Yo-Yo Ma. The couple was one of three subscribers chosen in a special contest to have their picture taken with the renowned cellist. Mr. and Mrs. Gregory Armour and Rhoda Ewert and Carole Noonan were the other winners.
