he book of Mary Poppins, the musical, was written by Julian Fellowes, who subsequently Julian Fellowes on the set found fame as of “Downton Abbey” creator of the TV series “Downton Abbey.” Actor-singerdancer Con O’Shea-Creal, who plays Bert, finds the hit BBC melodrama and the familyfriendly musical comedy to be more alike than you’d think. “Julian Fellowes is all over Mary Poppins,” he says. “I’ve read some of his novels since I booked the show, and he’s not ashamed to express his fascination with Edwardian times — the servants and the staff, the ‘Upstairs/ Dowstairs’ thing. Where Downton Abbey is really a tip-top, wellrun estate, Cherry Tree Lane is anything but. You see the same archetypal characters in both, but responding to different situations in different ways. In the cast, we watch ‘Downton Abbey’ and hear colloquialisms or even character names that are in Mary Poppins.” 10 EncoreAtlantA.com
Reality’s limitations
prevent the cast of the Mary Poppins stage musical from replicating the famous feats of the Disney film, like dancing with animated penguins, popping through chalk pictures or levitating with laughter. Still, Con O’Shea-Creal, who plays the irrepressible chimney sweep Bert, does get to conjure a few jaw-dropping moments of stage magic. He delivers a particularly impressive stunt in the rooftop number “Step in Time,” in which Bert walks up the side of the stage wall, crosses the proscenium arch upside down and tapdances in defiance of gravity. Like any good magician, he declines to share his secrets, but he will describe the experience. “I’m upside-down for close to a minute — any longer than that and I’d be in trouble,” says the singer-dancer, 27. “I’m really keeping my core tight and trying to keep the blood from rushing to my head. My body’s adjusted to it, so when I get to

the proscenium, I can sing. It’s never really been disorienting, but I have to keep my wits about me, stay calm, sing and tap with the music. The difficult part is stepping onto the wall and off of the ceiling.”
O’Shea-Creal joined the national tour a year ago as Bert’s understudy and part of the ensemble. It gave the Lincoln, Neb., native, a longtime tap dancer, a chance to prove he has Bert-like dexterity.
Such feats of stage sorcery have, no doubt, helped feed the success of the stage musical, based partly on the iconic 1964 film and partly on P.L. Travers’ original children’s books about a magic nanny who unifies misbehaving children and their distracted parents. This Mary Poppins, featuring the songs of the Oscar-winning Sherman brothers as well as new music and lyrics by George Stiles and Anthony Drewe, opened in London in 2004 and made its Broadway debut in 2006. It’s proved more popular with audiences than critics, winning just one of the seven Tony Awards for which it was nominated (scenic design) but running more than six years in New York. It closed March 3.
“They needed an everyman jack-of-all-trades and a professional tap dancer,” he says. “Bert plays with a lot of props — his broom, his paint set — you need to be able to control the prop, not let the prop control you.”

When the role of Bert came open six months into his tenure, O’Shea-Creal got the job. He mastered the wall climb in two weeks, but found the real learning curve was dealing with the crowd. “Bert doesn’t have

The Poppins character might be “practically perfect in every way” as the script says, but O’Shea-Creal’s cheerful Cockney is the narrative glue that holds the story together. “Bert always uses that little chunk of ‘Chim Chim Cher-ee’ — it’s like his theme song — but he has to sing it slightly differently each time, based on the scenes he has to introduce. That’s something that I’m constantly working with. Can I color these words better than I’ve done before?” As much as he enjoys the spectacle of “Step in Time,” he also treasures his number with the stern but softening Mr. Banks, “A Man Has Dreams/A Spoonful of Sugar.” “What I love about Bert is not just what he says, but when he appears. He always shows up at some point around Mr. Banks. It’s like Mr. Banks is Bert’s test: How do 14 EncoreAtlantA.com
I make this man realize what he needs, which is to show his children more love, maybe more love than he was shown a child. And I sing ‘A Spoonful of Sugar’ to him, the ‘sugar’ being love and the ‘medicine’ being the struggles of life.” Perhaps the most demanding aspect of the show for O’Shea-Creal is the transition from the grand showmanship of “Step in Time” to the subsequent scene’s quiet, emotional exchange. It’s a span of about 90 seconds. “I have to get offstage, take off my tap shoes, have a drink of water and catch my breath so I can do the scene with Mr. Banks right,” he says. That requires a magic all its own.

In 2000, he left Endemol and founded Stage Entertainment, the largest independent theater company in Europe. Note by note, conductor Brent-Alan Huffman keeps ‘Sister Act’ on course

ou’ve seen him in the pit — just a hand with a baton waving in the semi-darkness. He — or sometimes she — is easy to ignore, but essential to any musical. We’re talking about the conductor, without whom there’d be no music. There’s a lot more to the job than you might imagine. Brent-Alan Huffman (Beauty and the Beast, Leap of Faith, Little Shop of Horrors) has been with Sister Act since it began six years ago and is doing double duty on this tour. He’s music directing as well as conducting; each job has its own peculiarities. As conductor, Huffman maintains the pace of the show and the tempo of its music. With Sister Act, the musical styles and tempos vary greatly, so he sets the pace and shapes the music’s intensity. “I also cue the orchestra and the physical intentions of the orchestra,” he says. “Is it a heavy sound or is fast and forward? I create that physically with my hands and body to give that intention to the orchestra.” 34 EncoreAtlantA.com
He’s also a support system for the actors. Although they know when to start and stop singing, sometimes they need to see him. That’s done via a monitor Brent-Alan Huffman that usually hangs from the balcony rail, as it does at the Fox Theatre, so they can sneak a peak when necessary. The cast interacts more with Huffman when he’s got music-directing hat on. He’s their vocal coach from the get-go. Once a show opens, he’ll hold a vocal brush-up rehearsal every two or three months, sitting in the audience once a week and taking notes. The “notes” are usually little reminders, like remembering to start and stop on the third beat instead of the fourth. “I want them to be in the top vocal shape,” Huffman says. “The music is an extremely important and exciting part of the show, and I want that excitement to read through every single time.”
Just as in the 1992 movie featuring Whoopi Goldberg, the music provides the undergirding for the story. Deloris Van Cartier is still a worldly singer who witnesses a mob crime, then hides as a nun in a convent, where she has trouble fitting in. While the movie has 11 tunes, mostly pop songs written by the likes of Smokey Robinson (“My Guy”) and the Isley Brothers (“Shout”), the stage score is original and comes from composer Alan Menken and lyricist Glenn Slater, who wrote 14 new songs. “People are not disappointed by the score at all,” says Huffman. “It is so uplifting and catchy. It’s fresh and new, but still feels familiar. The premise is still there. [Deloris] is teaching her music, the kind of music she sings in her nightclub, to the nuns in a way to help them find their joy and spirits.”
“In this show, we have the songs from Mother Superior, and the songs are much more cerebral,” Huffman says. “The lyricist has some really smart lyrics for her, and the music is sort of Sondheim-esque. Then, you’ve got the musical theater ballads, R&B for the thugs, and disco for Deloris and the nuns. Alan’s a master of all of them.” Getting that mix right has been a trial-anderror project, one that was tested with Atlanta audiences in 2007, when the Alliance Theatre staged the show. Huffman is excited to bring the musical back to the city for a homecoming of sorts. “When we were in Atlanta, we were still trying to figure out the show,” he says. “I want people to see the changes, to see this version now. You can tell from an audience what works and doesn’t work. The show has been very well-received throughout the country, and I think Atlanta was part of that.”

Private Rooms The Fox Theatre has three private rental spaces, with accommodations for 25 to 1,200 guests. Ticket Office The Fox Theatre Ticket Office is located in the arcade entrance to the theatre. The Ticket Office is open for walk up ticket sales Monday-Friday, 10:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m., and Saturday,10:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. The Fox Theatre Ticket Office is not open on Sundays unless there is a performance. On event days, the Ticket Office opens two hours prior to show time. Doors to the Fox open one hour prior to show time. Tickets for all performances at the Fox may be purchased online at www.FoxAtlTix.com, all Ticket Alternative outlets and all Atlanta-area Whole Foods Markets, by calling (855) ATL-TIXX, or by visiting the Fox Theatre Ticket Office in person during regular Box Office hours. Group Sales The Fox Theatre Group Sales Department offers discounts to Groups for most Broadway shows. The Group Sales office is open Monday-Friday from 9am to 5pm. Tours Tours of the Fox Theatre are available through the Atlanta Preservation Center. Tours are conducted Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays at 10:00 a.m. and Saturdays at 10:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. Tours begin in the Peachtree Street Arcade entrance to the theatre. Smoking In accordance with the Fulton County Clean Air Ordinance, the Fox Theatre is a smoke-free facility. Smoking is only permitted in designated areas. Special Needs Ken Shook, Patron Services Coordinator, is our liaison to the disabled community. He can be reached at 404.881.2118 and can provide information on the locations and prices of accessible seating and other programs for the disabled. The Fox Theatre also has a brochure detailing all these programs for our patrons with special needs. This brochure is available at the Concierge Desk in the Arcade. An audio clarification device (Phonic Ear) is available for patrons with hearing disabilities. It is available, free of charge, on a first-come, first-serve basis on the evening of a performance, or you may reserve a device by calling the Patron Services Director. A limited number of booster seats are also available free of charge. Elevators Elevators are located at the north end of each lobby. The elevators are available during all performances and make it possible to access each lobby without the use of stairs. Patrons should be aware that access to upper seating areas do involve stairs. Parking Parking is available within a four-block radius in all directions of the Fox Theatre. Advanced reserved parking is available for sale at the Fox Ticket Office or by calling (855) ATL-TIXX. The Fox Theatre assumes no responsibility for vehicles parked in any of the privately owned parking lots operating in the Fox Theatre district. Performance Notes All patrons, regardless of age, must have a ticket in order to be admitted to the theatre. Not all events are suitable for children. Infants will not be admitted to adult programs/performances. Parents will be asked to remove children who create a disturbance. Latecomers will be seated at the discretion of the management, in conjunction with the wishes of the producers. Please turn off all pagers and cell phones prior to the beginning of each performance. Camera and recording devices are strictly prohibited. Backstage employees are represented by the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (I.A.T.S.E.)
Fox fun facts: opening day
The Fox Theatre opened on a snowy Dec. 25, 1929, and the crowd stretched around the block. Tickets for opening-day shows cost from 15 cents to 75 cents. Here are some other fun facts:
“Peaches.” Other performers that night included a Japanese acrobatic trio (Kitaros), a comedy team (Davis and LaRue), a dance team (Ray Bradley and Evian), and a sister singing group (Jean and Jeanette).

The Fox Theatre’s Egyptian Ballroom and Grand Salon have been the spot for many fantastic events, such as weddings and receptions, corporate events, anniversary and birthday parties, and association functions. Here are some other fun facts: any corporate events have taken M place in the historic Egyptian Ballroom and Grand Salon, hosting such special guest entertainers as Martin Short, David Lee Roth, Jeff Foxworthy, and the B-52’s.

Just Say No to quick-fix diets By Lisa Graham, RN, BSN, CDE Remember the fable of the tortoise and the hare? The moral is that slow and steady wins the race. Turns out, that age-old wisdom applies to weight loss, too. Fad diets often fail because dieters tend to regain the weight when they inevitably return to their old eating habits. Success, as nutritionists will tell us time and time again, is a result of lifestyle changes and smart food choices. There is no miracle weight-loss plan when it comes to long-term, sustainable weight loss. Recognizing fads If you’re aiming to shed some pounds, and don’t know where to start, there are plenty of credible resources out there, but it’s important to know how to decipher fact from fiction. When it comes to recognizing fad diets, there are several red flags: • Avoid any diet that eliminates entire food groups. Incorporating a variety of foods is necessary for good health, and any diet that teaches you otherwise isn’t teaching you the fundamentals of good eating habits. On the other hand, vegetarian and vegan diet plans can be very healthy, but consult with a nutritionist before diving in to ensure that all your nutrient requirements will be met. • Beware of tricks. your body into burning more calories: a healthy diet and regular exercise. • Steer clear of promises. Ignore any diet that promises dramatic weight loss that’s fast and easy. Healthy weight loss requires patience and hard work. Any diet telling you otherwise is just blowing hot air. Keep the weight off for good If you’re serious about weight loss, ignore the hype. Follow these tips to get back into shape — for life. 1. Go slowly. When you make small, meaningful changes, the weight will come off slowly, but it’ll likely stay off because you’re building good habits. Healthy, sustainable weight loss for most people is 1 or 2 pounds per week. Losing more typically is neither healthy nor sustainable, and the weight lost is usually water weight, not body weight. 2. Don’t starve yourself. Eat just 300 to 500 calories under what you burn each day. If you start cutting too many calories, your metabolism slows down to protect fat stores in expectation of a long period of food deprivation. 3. Eat only when you’re hungry, stop when you’re full. Many people lose weight just by paying attention to this one tip. 4. Get your Zzz’s. Studies show that sleep deprivation increases levels of a hunger hormone, which may lead to overeating. 5. The company’s Theatre for the Very Young program introduces children 18 months to 5 years to live theater. One of it’s popular, annual shows is A Child’s Garden of Verses, based on the poetry of Robert Louis Stevenson. that gets them out of their seats and into the show. Audience members of all ages can expect to plant seeds, rake leaves, help build a boat, meet characters in the garden and eat apple slices. When creating the show, Newcott says, “I wanted to start with a text and remembered how much I enjoyed Robert Lewis Stevenson’s poetry when I was a child.” Parents may remember Stevenson’s poems from their youth, but children are attracted to the sing-songy quality of the rhymes, which Kornhauser molded into a play with a short storyline and lots of interaction. “I have never had a theater experience that is so inclusive,” Newcott says. “Everyone is invited to play. The performers are ready to adjust to any change in format.” Actor Denise Arribas, who has performed in A Child’s Garden of Verses, says the actors have to build a child-friendly vocabulary to keep the show moving. “We have to encourage the children to think as an ensemble, which is something you haven’t necessarily figured out as at 1 year old,” Arribas says. “We make it into a game of how many and how fast you can do it, so they think, ‘Of course I want to win this game, so I am going to do this really fast!’ When you say ‘game,’ it’s ridiculous how involved the kids get.”
Think little ones don’t respond to theater this early? You might be surprised. The program began in 1980s Europe, when studies showed that those age 3 and younger had a greater capability to engage socially and emotionally than previously known. Theaters in Germany, Italy and the United Kingdom began to produce festivals for young audiences. The program has since found several U.S. homes: Seattle Children’s Theatre, Emerald City Theatre in Chicago, and SPARK! Theatre in Austin and the Alliance, among others. Arribas is quick to point out that Theatre for the Very Young shows are tailored to each child’s comfort level. “We push as much as they will let us. It’s about
them having fun, even if they want to do it in their seat and not come onstage with us. Maybe when they grow up, they’ll be the directors, not the actors.”

Actor Rob Lawhon hoped to create a future theater fan when he brought son Gibson to The Tranquil Tortoise and the Hoppity Hare. “I remember the moment when I decided to be an actor when I was a kid,” Lawhon says. “I’d like to give him opportunities to have that same click that I had with the arts.” Lawhon calls Gibson’s reactions to the show “priceless.” “The show affects him in the way that it’s supposed to, he looks where he’s supposed to look, and he follows the narrative. It holds his attention for up to an hour, and for a 2-year-old, that’s incredible.” After the show, the kids aren’t the only ones in need of naps.

“Let me tell you, I do boot camp, I work out and after every show, it feels just as tiring as a workout!” Arribas says. “It’s so much engagement, and you can’t take a mental break. This isn’t improv for adults. You can’t be sarcastic or go to a funny place with it. You have to be simple, present and honest for them.
