Mamma Mia’s Adam Jacobs on the challenges of keeping romance alive on the road By Carly Felton

nlike Sky, the character he plays in Mamma Mia, Adam Jacobs comes from a close-knit family — so close, in fact, that all the members share the same musical gene and itch to entertain. Jacobs’ grandmother was a cabaret singer who was asked by Tommy Dorsey to travel with his band at the ripe age of 15. Jacobs’ mom always sang in the choir at church, and his little sister Gabrielle began her entertainment career at age 6, performing with song and dance troop Razzle Dazzle in California. When Gabrielle invited Jacobs to start voice lessons and join her, he jumped at the chance. They performed in hotels and at weddings for years, before Jacobs discovered community theater. After that, he decided to attend the musical theater program at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts.
It was then Gabrielle’s turn to follow, attending a performing arts high school and then the Steinhardt School of Music at NYU. “We never had much sibling rivalry,” Jacobs says. “We supported each other.” It was only natural, then, that Jacobs would marry into an acting family. He met his wife Kelly while performing at a Christmas show in Hershey, Penn. “I was Santa and she was a rag doll,” he says. “She went to Tokyo for seven months to perform at Disney there, and I flew out twice to visit. We got married three years ago.” Kelly is now touring with Mary Poppins. With both Jacobs and Kelly on the road, maintaining the relationship can be difficult, but they make it work. “We have an arrangement where we make it possible to see each other once every three weeks,” he says. “If we go Atlanta’s Performing Arts Publication

well. “We give each other notes if we think it’ll help,” he says. “We have no qualms about that. There’s no competition [in our relationship]. If anything, it helps [to be in the same industry] because the other person knows what it’s like and understands the traveling and the [need] to be away a lot.” Next up for Jacobs and Kelly? Children. “We just bought a house in Sunnyside, Queens [N.Y.] and there’s a room that could be a baby room, eventually,” he says. “After these tours, the best thing would be for Kelly to get into the Mary Poppins Broadway company. And, [if ] I could get on a Broadway show, we could both be in New York. [But,] we’ll just take it all as it comes.” Mamma Mia plays at the Fox Theatre Feb. 9-14. longer than that, [we] get really agitated on the phone and that sort of thing.” In between visits, the couple uses cell phones, Skype and webcams to keep in touch. At the beginning of a tour, they lay out their schedules side by side with an atlas and see where and when visits make the most sense. “The most important thing is knowing when the next time we are going to see each other is,” Jacobs says. “We like to plan ahead.” It helps that he is able to negotiate extra vacation time, and that Kelly’s tour usually has three or four days in between stops. In lieu of having each other, they do have their “show” families. “On the road, you bond and hang out because all you have is each other,” Jacobs says. “You really make lasting friendships on tours.” Another side benefit of doing theater is it keeps Jacobs in shape. For Mamma Mia, he had to put on 20 pounds of muscle for the role of Sky — and he’s not getting any complaints from Kelly about it! She’s come to see the show 10 times, and he goes to watch her act, sing and dance, as
Honoring the past Celebrating Judith Jamison’s leadership of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater
I
n 1958, a group of talented young dancers led by visionary choreographer Alvin Ailey performed for the first time as the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater (AAADT). During the course of Ailey’s tenure, the AAADT would become lauded for being a tour de force in the world of modern dance. The company’s success was attributed not only to Ailey’s expansive collection of ballets, such as the classic “Revelations” and “Cry,” but also to its brilliant dancers. At the forefront of the troupe was Masazumi Chaya, a classically trained dancer from Japan who became AAADT’s associate artistic director in 1991, and Judith Jamison, a ballerina from Philadelphia who was discovered by 12 EncoreAtlantA.com
Agnes de Mille and widely considered to be Ailey’s muse. Jamison performed with the troupe for 15 years (1965-80) before leaving to do guest appearances with ballets across the globe and, eventually, start her own dance company. However, when Ailey died in 1989, she returned as his personally chosen successor to assume the mantle of artistic director. For the past 20 years, Jamison has continued Ailey’s vision while masterfully infusing it with her own. Under her direction, she has transformed the organization from the verge of bankruptcy into a global arts ambassador that reaches new heights, both fiscally and creatively. Now in its 51st year, the AAADT is still flourishing. Continued on page 44

GOLDEN RULES The following brief, but important article has been published to assist in audience etiquette. To this day we get at least one phone call a week asking for reprint rights. These calls and letters come from orchestras and theaters, opera and ballet companies all over the United States and Canada, big and little troupes alike. The message, telegraphed between the lines, seems to be an S.O.S.: American audiences are out of control. Are they? Here’s a refresher course. Please read on, and remember, part of one’s pact as an audience member is to take seriously the pleasure of others, a responsibility fulfilled by quietly attentive (or silently inattentive) and selfcontained behavior. After all, you can be as demonstrative as you want during bows and curtain calls. 1. Go easy with the atomizer; many people are highly allergic to perfume and cologne. 2. If you bring a child, make sure etiquette is part of the experience. Children love learning new things. 3. Unwrap all candies and cough drops before the curtain goes up or the concert begins. 4. Make sure cell phones, beepers, and watch alarms are OFF. And don't jangle the bangles. 5. The overture is part of the performance. Please cease talking at this point. 6. Note to lovebirds: When you lean your heads together, you block the view of the person behind you. Leaning forward also blocks the view. 7. THOU SHALT NOT TALK, or hum, or sing along, or beat time with a body part. 8. Force yourself to wait for a pause or intermission before rifling through a purse, backpack or shopping bag. 9. Yes, the parking lot gets busy and public transportation is tricky, but leaving while the show is in progress is discourteous. 10. Honor the old standby: Do unto others, as you would have them do unto you.

that she is fulfilling his vision of using “dance as a medium for honoring the past, celebrating the present and fearlessly reaching into the future.” Although a replacement has yet to be named, an even brighter future is expected to follow with the new visionary. “I’m looking for someone with great intelligence and great nerve. Someone who understands the tradition of the company, but makes decisions as an individual,” Jamison said in a 2008 New York Times interview. “That’s what I did. I couldn’t imitate Alvin. All I could do was follow the road map. What he laid down is perfectly wonderful.” The Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater takes to the Fox stage Feb. 18-21.

Under Jamison’s leadership, the company also has achieved many milestones, including establishing a bachelor of fine arts program for dancers at Fordham University, and strengthening the Ailey School and outreach programs such as AileyCamp, which teaches disadvantaged children self-esteem and discipline through the art of dance. And in 2004, the dance company moved into the $55 million Joan Weill Center for Dance, a 77,000sq. ft., eight-story midtown Manhattan office and rehearsal space said to be the nation’s largest building dedicated solely to dance. However, Jamison’s biggest influence as artistic director can be seen on the stage. Not only has she choreographed and commissioned numerous works, she also has inspired a new generation of dancer-choreographers. Matthew Rushing is one such dancer. Having trained at the Ailey School, Rushing danced with Ailey II, the popular touring company that fuses young dance talent with emerging choreographers, for a year before joining the ranks of the main company in 1992. Now, his first solo-choreographed piece “Uptown,” an ode to the Harlem Renaissance Era, debuts as part of the 20-city U.S. tour commemorating Jamison’s 20 years of direction, which will conclude with her announced retirement in 2011. Jamison, 66, has spent the better part of her lifetime solidifying the legacy of Alvin Ailey. As she steps into the role of artistic director emerita, it may be said

Want to spoil your sweetie without breaking the bank? Consider these low-cost ways to spread the love: Write a dozen or so reasons why you love your mate and tuck the notes away in random places around the house; make a candlelit dinner together, complete with champagne and chocolates; play paparazzi by taking candid photos of each other and together, then either upload them into a digital album, make a screensaver collage on your computer or print them and create a memory book; or spend time with your partner doing things they like to do.
