BROWARD CENTER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS FORT LAUDERDALE, FLORIDA

STORY BY Caitlin Moynihan
Audiences have been jumping to their feet in exuberance for MJ ever since it opened on Broadway in January 2022, and now theatergoers across the country are experiencing the thrilling production for themselves. Whether you’re perfecting your moonwalk or listen to playlists of his smash hits every time you go on a road trip, MJ is for everyone who can’t stop singing “mama-say-mama-sa-mama-coosa” at the grocery store. (And who hasn’t?) Here are three reasons MJ is the thriller we all need right now.
It’s no secret that Jackson was known for his moves—only matched by his iconic vocals. With dance legends like Bob Fosse, Fred Astaire and the Nicholas Brothers as Jackson’s inspiration, MJ The Musical’s director and choreographer Christopher Wheeldon had a tall order to fill. Already a Tony winner for choreographing An American in Paris, Wheeldon sought out Rich + Tone Talauega, two dancers on Jackson’s HIStory World Tour, to join the creative team for authenticity. From the explosive opening number to ovation-worthy ending and a lot of eye-popping moves in between, it’s obvious why the show took home the Tony Award for Best Choreography.
Two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Lynn Nottage weaves over 35 of Jackson’s biggest hits into the musical, showcasing his talents from The Jackson 5 to 1991’s Dangerous, his eighth studio album. The musical is full of mash-ups, reprises and jaw-dropping surprises and, perhaps surprisingly, it also offers insight into his background. The show offers Jackson’s memories of his tumultuous childhood through a series of interviews, which allows audiences to see the King of Pop’s life from 1965 to 1992. The parameters of the storytelling bring depth to the beloved music catalog.
Instead of a wide-ranging biographical musical, MJ takes a unique stance with its narrative. Framed as a documentary team chronicling the creation of Jackson’s Dangerous World Tour in 1992. “We didn’t want to create the typical jukebox musical,” Nottage told The New York Times. “One of the things that I reject is when you try to do these cradle-to-grave stories —I don’t think they’re that interesting. So we’re focusing on just one period of his life that’s really representative of his life as a whole—we opted to look at the early ’90s, and very specifically the Dangerous tour, which was the apotheosis of his creative journey.” Nottage accomplishes this by employing three actors of different ages to portray Jackson through the years. It’s a one-two-three punch of talent.
And just like that you’ve been hit by, you’ve been struck by, a smooth criminal.
Book writer Larissa FastHorse preserves the magic of Peter Pan in a new adaptation while deepening the classic story at its heart.
STORY BY Ruthie Fierberg
Growing up, Larissa FastHorse avoided Peter Pan. As a Native American from the Sicangu Lakota nation, FastHorse had heard about the hurtful portrayals of Indigenous people in the story — be it the play or novel or musical — and she didn’t want to engage. Decades later, and now a Broadway playwright, FastHorse was asked to rewrite the musical’s book for a new Peter Pan tour. She fully intended to turn the job down but decided to read the script from the 1954 Jerome Robbins-helmed production as a courtesy. What FastHorse found surprised her.
“I could see the magic for children,” FastHorse told Broadway News. “Everyone loves a magical escape world, and this one is complicated and difficult. I was like, ‘Oh, Peter’s super complicated,’ and I love complex things for young people. That was really exciting to me. And the comedy writer in me loves the pirates. They’re funny and ridiculous.”
“I realized there was so much good to be saved,” FastHorse continued. “I was like, ‘If we could just take the harmful things out, what a gift to bring all of this magic to a new generation.’”
FastHorse signed on. Over the course of two years, she and director Lonny Price created a new Peter Pan which honored the musical that generations of audiences love while trimming it down (from three hours with two intermissions to two hours with one), filling dramaturgical gaps and dignifying the portrayal of the “Indians” in Neverland and the women and girls throughout.
“We wanted the grandparents who have had this with them their whole life to share the same memories with grandchildren today,” FastHorse said. “But we also want it to not cause problems.”
When it comes to Neverland’s tribe of Indians, FastHorse identified flaws. “They’re the only people in their Neverland that couldn’t figure out English, which is wild,” said the playwright. “Everybody else can speak English — the pirates from all over the world can all speak English but native people can’t do it.”
“They were clearly not being treated as full, human people with the same capabilities as everyone else,” she added. “Also, if you look at the Robbins version, there is never any explanation about why [the natives] are there [in Neverland] or why Peter and the Lost Boys and the Pirates are all trying to kill them. The underlying material assumption is: If they’re Indians, you try to kill them and no explanation is necessary. That’s not cool. That’s not something you want to teach children.”
To address these gaps, FastHorse strategized within the established rules of Neverland, a place where people never grow up.
In line with that longstanding premise, FastHorse’s reimagined script posits that when someone is the last of their people on Earth, they go to Neverland to preserve their culture. What results is a blended tribe of multiple Indigenous nations. For example, FastHorse explained, “[Actor] Hannah Schmidt — who is one white person in the tribe — her actual roots come from Eastern Europe. So we said, ‘Great, you’ll play a version of yourself of this ancient Slavic culture and have a costume and a [character] name inspired by that. You’re not just [vaguely] Indigenous.’”
“We list the [character’s] name in the program [not just “tribe member”] intentionally so that people think a little bit about who they are and where they come from,” she continued. “Because there are people Indigenous to everywhere.”
FastHorse and costume designer Sarafina Bush collaborated to ensure the textiles used for each tribesperson reflect individual Indigenous societies from around the world — while also working to unify aspects that indicate they’re all part of one Neverland culture. This tour’s original cast inspired characters of Olmec (native to Mexico), Nok (Western Africa) and Qauqaut (Taiwan) heritage — to name a few. But future casts — both on tour and, FastHorse hopes, in any production — will pay tribute to first-nation cultures inspired by its actors. With this built-in logic, the harmful practice of Redface (non-native people playing native roles) in Peter Pan can be discontinued, actors can authentically play Indigenous roles and audiences can expand their knowledge of global civilizations.
No matter who comprises this tribe, they are still at odds with Peter and the Lost Boys. FastHorse decided “they’re fighting over resources,” she said. In particular, the scribe noticed that the Lost Boys don’t have pockets — and this is a source of sadness. So, FastHorse decided that one element feeding this feud is that the tribe, led by Tiger Lily, stole the Lost Boys’ pockets. In FastHorse’s adaptation, cleverness and expansion abounds. Those sensibilities also apply to the female characters. Not only is Tiger Lily the leader (no longer the chief’s daughter), but Wendy is written as more well-rounded. “In every scene of Neverland, Wendy was working,” FastHorse said of the original material. “She was working to take care of men, and the assumption was Neverland was fun for her because the most fun thing that had happened to a woman was to take care of men.”
That premise is “1) not something that girls today are going to get; they’re going to be confused and 2) not something I want to show little girls,” FastHorse added. Yet FastHorse didn’t excise the compassion and kindness inherent to Wendy: “She still does care for her brothers and brings her little brothers along on the adventure — and she doesn’t have to do that.”
But in FastHorse’s version of Wendy’s trip to Neverland, the young girl participates in the experience fully. Wendy also gets a song and interacts with Tiger Lily in a brand-new scene just between the two girls.
Still, FastHorse didn’t stop there when mining for substance. During that first read — when FastHorse was planning to reject the job — she specifically noticed the complexity of the title character. “On one hand he’s youth, joy and freedom, and on the other, he is awkward and does not like girls,” FastHorse said. “He has ‘grown up’ rejected and alone, and he has all the resulting problems from that.”
To emphasize the rich complexity of Peter, FastHorse and Price reintroduced the solo “When I Went Home,” which was originally written for the character of Peter but was cut after the musical’s pre-Broadway world premiere in San Francisco because Mary Martin, who originated the role, found it too depressing.
“We feel like it really gives you insight into Peter,” FastHorse said of the tune. “It’s about why he made a choice to stay in Neverland, and it was a choice. It really gives him a lot of depth and understanding.”
Exactly the two qualities FastHorse has infused into this Peter Pan for a new generation.
Peter Pan is scheduled to come to the Broward Center for the Performing Arts starting May 6, 2025.
