Although movies and TV series are shot here in increasing numbers, Atlanta often doubles as someplace else or provides interiors for films shot on location: The fifth Fast and the Furious, for instance, took place in Rio de Janeiro and shot

most outdoor scenes in Puerto Rico but filmed interiors and some urban streetscapes here. Anchorman 2, the 1970s’ Will Ferrell comedy, did transform the city, briefly. West Midtown’s Olympic Flame restaurant became Whammy Chicken!, a fast-food franchise from sportscaster Champ Kind. The flick gave Peachtree Center an ice-skating rink a la New York’s Rockefeller Center. And it closed Manuel’s Tavern for a day. As general manager Brian Maloof wrote on its Facebook wall, “They needed some additional props from the ’70s for the time-period shoot and we had them in storage. I overheard a guy say, ‘It is nice we do not need to

change many things for this ’70s shot.’ I am not sure how to take that. :-)” Atlanta has become so popular that some productions must shoot around each other to use a prized spot. The Georgia Archives Building across from the Capitol is state-owned but popular for its versatility, says Lee Thomas, director of the Georgia Film, Music and Digital Entertainment Office. Both Identity Thief (with Melissa McCarthy and Jason Bateman) and Anchorman 2 used it. The influx of film production shows that Atlanta is more architecturally diverse than we might realize. Midtown’s Biltmore Hotel became New York’s Waldorf Astoria in the Jackie Robinson biopic 42. Georgia Tech imitated Google headquarters for the Vince Vaughn/Owen Wilson comedy The Internship. The Capitol became an abandoned hotel for an action scene in the post-industrial America of NBC’s “Revolution.” (Perhaps the most incongruous match of subject matter and location is CBGB, an upcoming film about the legendary 1970s punk nightclub, being shot in Savannah.) Originally a complex of 19th-century industrial buildings, the Goat Farm can pretty easily be made to resemble another century or a landscape after the fall of civilization as we know it. Catching Fire also

used Buckhead’s Swan House mansion and grounds to convey the opulence of the decadent capital. Perhaps no Atlanta location of recent years has been more iconic than Freedom Parkway, thanks to the gridlocked, apocalyptic scene from the pilot episode of “The Walking Dead,” which became the cover of the first season DVD. The “Dead” also walked through downtown’s Fairlie-Poplar district and the Cobb Energy Center, which stood in for the U.S. Centers for Disease Control. Most recently, “The Walking Dead” filmed much of its third season in Senoia (population 3,307), where businesses like the Main Street Fudge Shop capitalize on their new fame with “zombie fudge” and “Woodbury” mugs in honor of the fictional stronghold against the undead. The influx of film production has made “spot the celebrity” one of Atlanta’s favorite games. Robin Williams did a set at the Laughing Skull, Dakota Fanning celebrated her 19th birthday at STK, Reese Witherspoon got a DUI on Peachtree and, in the coolest appearance of all, Kevin Bacon appeared at Dad’s Garage Theatre’s BaconFest fundraiser a year ago. Owen Wilson apparently turned up everywhere, from the High Museum of Art to the city’s hippest restaurants, so he’s seeing a lot more than Johnny’s Hideaway these days. Film and theater writer Curt Holman has won awards for his critical writing and, in 2005, was a National Endowment for the Arts fellow in theater and musical theater.

he pop-R&B band Mindless Behavior has been described at one time or another as carefree, energetic, rollicking, romantic, slick, smooth, stylish, bright, playful, freewheeling, joyous and passionate. The band, known for its clean lyrics and attracting tween and teenage girls, brings all that, plus special guests OMG Girlz and Coco Jones, to the Fox Theatre stage on July 20. The singer-dancers known as Princeton, Prodigy, Ray Ray and Roc Royal (real names Jacob Anthony Perez, Craig Thomas Crippen Jr., Rayan De'Quann Lopez and Chresanto Lorenzo Romelo August, respectively — came together in Los Angeles in 2008 and trained for

two years before releasing their first album, #1 Girl, on the Interscope label. hen Brian Clowdus proposed the idea of Serenbe Playhouse, he was so eager to stage plays in Georgia’s idyllic planned community, he decided to dispense with the actual playhouse. “They had no physical space for a theater, so I thought, let’s not wait for a theater to be built — let’s just use the outdoors,” says Clowdus, a former New York actor who, in 2008, successfully pitched the Serenbe community’s Institute of Art, Culture and the Environment on the idea of having a resident theater. “Some theaters say they’re ‘green,’ but you’re not really green until you stage shows outside, without building anything.” The company this year stages its fourth

summer season at Serenbe, a New Urbanism village of homes, shops and farmland in Chattahoochee Hills, about 30 miles south of Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport. Serenbe Playhouse's productions don’t just showcase Clowdus’ inventive approach to outdoor staging, they showcase Serenbe itself as a lovely community in harmony with its landscape, with enough restaurants and attractions to inspire a rich day trip. Serenbe began in the 1990s when former Atlanta restaurateur Sven Nygren purchased a 60-acre parcel of land, including a 1905 farmhouse intended as a weekend home. Nygren turned the farmhouse into The Inn at Serenbe, a bed-and-breakfast. In the 2000s he led the development of Serenbe as a community full

of farmland and green space as a buffer against Atlanta’s encroaching urban sprawl. Guests can take free monthly tours of Serenbe Farms, feed the horses, chickens and other animals, shop at the elegant but unpretentious boutiques and follow the trails that link the various neighborhoods for short hikes in the woods. The Inn features soothing gardens, porch swings and a small swimming pool that, surrounded by green lawns, looks more like a tranquil reflecting pool. Serenbe’s farmers market and artists market and three restaurants take their produce and other ingredients from the nearby farms. The Farmhouse Restaurant, in The Inn, serves gourmet-style Southern meals, including a fried chicken lunch on Saturdays and Sundays. The Hil Restaurant, named for co-owner 52 ENCOREATLANTA.COM

and chef Hilary White, also takes a casual approach to upscale dining. The Blue-Eyed Daisy Bakeshop serves breakfast, burgers and salads and provides a gathering place for residents and visitors to chat. As the name suggests, it specializes in baked goods and was the 2012 winner of the Food Network’s “Cupcake Wars.” When he develops Serenbe Playhouse’s programming, Clowdus says he’ll often start with a script and choose the most appropriate location.This summer’s The Velveteen Rabbit, for example, is set in post-Civil War Savannah, so the tin soldiers and cracked Southern ballerinas have historical and literary resonance. “We wanted an area that was swampy, so we chose the Grange Creek, near a really cool playground for kids,” Clowdus says. teen Rabbit is the playhouse’s first production in the new neighborhood, which helped bring the year-old shop Fern’s Market on board as a sponsor. Other times, the location inspires the show choice. “Whenever I passed Serenbe’s Wildflower Meadow, something about it has always reminded me of Woodstock,” Clowdus says. “I had to the idea to do the musical Hair there, as if it were an outdoor rock concert, with tents and scaffolding and hippies in the fields. All of the visual representation comes from Woodstock.” Serenbe Playhouse brings some wild creativity to its staging. The Ugly Duckling in 2011, for example, partially took place on a platform in the middle of a pond. That does leave the company vulnerable to the whims of Mother Nature. Shortly before The Ugly Duckling opened a huge rainstorm hit and raised the water level to the perform54 ENCOREATLANTA.COM

ers’ knees. "Then we had the drought," Clowdus says, "and the water level kept getting lower and lower until the stage was literally out of the water. Thank God we had the foresight to build the stage so it could be lowered.” This year marks the company’s first fall show, The Sleepy Hollow Experience (running Oct. 10-31), an adaptation of the Washington Irving story set at Serenbe Stables. Clowdus plans to include live horses. He says he tries to avoid using the same location twice, but admits that there’s some overlap. This summer’s A Walk in the Woods, a Pulitzer Prize nominee about the U.S./ Soviet arms race takes place at the Farmers Market Clearing, near the scene of 2011’s Shipwrecked. Serenbe offers no shortage of potential locations, however, Clowdus says. “I think with 1,100 acres, I’ve got 1,100 places.

he Fox Theatre Institute (FTI), an outreach program created by the Fox Theatre to “pay it forward,” showcased three of its latest Georgia theater restoration projects during a recent revival tour. The tour attracted nearly 700 people in towns of no more than a few thousand residents. Even the local news stations turned out. All three restoration projects should be completed this year: the Schaefer Center for the Performing Arts in Toccoa, the Knox Theatre in Warrenton and the Mars Theatre in Springfield. Each is being brought back to life

with the help of an FTI grant, which allows for substantial restoration, preservation and future planning and helps create a sustainable future for arts programs and stronger communities. Each tour stop featured a community festival with a performance by the band Von Grey — four sisters from Alpharetta. Von Grey (Americana, country, pop and a bit of bluegrass) was featured in the May issue of Billboard Magazine, performed at this year's South by Southwest Festival in Austin,Texas, and appeared on the late-night TV talk-show "Conan."

Here's a closer look at the three projects: SCHAEFER CENTER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS IN TOCCOA In Stephens County, about 90 miles northeast of Atlanta. FTI money has allowed the city to commission a historic preservation plan that will provide a long-range vision for the theater's restoration. The Schaefer Center recently restored its interior and will next take on restoration of the façade and original marquee. KNOX THEATER IN WARRENTON In Warren County, southeast of Atlanta. The Knox is rebuilding its roof, which will lead to other renovations, including structural repairs and electrical system improvements. MARS THEATRE IN SPRINGFIELD In Effingham County, part of the Savannah metro area. Mars has worked with SCAD students on a 3-D model of the building and documentation that will allow it to be nominated for the National Register of Historic Places. “The saving of the Fox Theatre was a critical step in the revitalization of Midtown Atlanta,” says Adina Erwin, Fox Theatre vice president and general manager. "The goal of FTI and restoration projects such as these is to serve as a catalyst for stabilizing and stimulating economic development while building stronger communities.” The FTI plans to make the revival tour an annual event.
