usical theater is often about making sure you’re seen and heard. Project your voice to the back row and beyond. Make that gesture a little more sweeping. Perhaps drop a chandelier from the ceiling at some point. Paul Kieve’s task is to hide almost all of what he does: the optical illusions that are some of the most talked-about moments in Ghost: The Musical. Audiences will see an actor walk through a door, objects levitate and hover in midair, and spirits rise from dead bodies. What they won’t see is the sleight of hand that makes it all possible. “About 97 percent of what I do is never seen by the audience,” says Kieve, a Brit who’s in his mid 40s. “My job is about both revealing and concealment. The end result should be a storytelling moment of something that isn’t actually possible, like a letter that folds up on its own in someone’s hand.” Ghost is, of course, the stage version of the popular 1990 supernatural romance about a dead man named Sam (Patrick Swayze) trying to connect from the afterlife with his girlfriend Molly (Demi Moore) through ATLANTA’S PERFORMING ARTS PUBLICATION

the medium Oda Mae (an Oscar-winning Whoopi Goldberg). Fans may remember something about pottery-making and the Righteous Brothers’ “Unchained Melody.” Bruce Joel Rubin adapted his own Oscarwinning screenplay for the stage; the music is from Glen Ballard and the Eurythmics’ Dave Stewart. The show began in England in 2011, moved to Broadway in 2012 and is now on its first U.S. national tour. Critics have singled out its illusions – essentially stage magic baked into the storyline, as have Kieve’s fellow magicians. “It’s rare for me to experience wonder, but my friend Paul Kieve gave me that experience for an illusion he created in Ghost,” David Copperfield tweeted. Added Teller (the small one) of magic 12 ENCOREATLANTA.COM
team Penn and Teller: “A show with killer magic built in bone-deep. This is magic as it should be used in the theater, the heart of the experience.” Kieve was involved with Ghost from its inception. “In the movie, they do everything with special effects and the audience knows that,” he says. “A lot of things have to be reimagined for the stage. We had to design the set itself to work with the illusions. We know there’s a guy who walks through a door, so you need to design everything in the environment to make that happen, and to make sure everyone in the audience sees it, but doesn’t see how it works.” Kieve began doing magic when he was 10, when he saw Doug Henning on a TV special and got his first magic set. At age 16 he did magic in the music video for Sade’s “Your Love Is King.” He’s since become a magician,

consultant, designer and expert on the history of magic. He consulted on the Harry Potter films Prisoner of Azkaban and Goblet of Fire, and taught magic to young actor Daniel Radcliffe. His book Hocus Pocus: A Tale of Magnificent Magicians and Their Amazing Feats was published in 2007 in the United Kingdom, he’s consulted for Copperfield, created illusions for the high-concept Zorro that played Atlanta’s Alliance Theatre last spring, and sawed Simon Cowell in half on live television. (Should we thank him?) It was his early exposure to Henning, the late Canadian magician with the memorable mustache, that guided Kieve in his endeavors. “Doug Henning emphasized the 14 ENCOREATLANTA.COM
importance of wonder for the audience, rather than a magician who makes the audience feel like they’ve been tricked,” Kieve says. “His whole persona was about sharing wonder and a feeling of astonishment. It’s a difficult balance to strike for magicians. When you stand up onstage as a magician, the audience is thinking, ‘This guy’s going to try and fool me.’ So you try to find ways around that. “I’d rather let you have a sense of amazement.” Phil Kloer has covered theater and the arts in Atlanta for 28 years, as a theater critic and popular culture writer for The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, and as a theater writer for ArtsATL.com.

Please silence or turn off all electronic devices, including cell phones, beepers, and watch alarms. We encourage you to share your experience at the Fox via social media, but please refrain from doing so or texting during performances; the glow from your device is distracting. 4. The overture is part of the performance. Please cease talking at this point. 6. Dear Lovebirds, when you lean your heads together, you block the view of the people behind you. Please consider the people that will be seated behind you when choosing whether or not to wear a hat or what hair style you choose. 7. Please wait for an appropriate moment to dig something out of your pocket or bag. 9. Go easy with the perfume and cologne, many people are highly allergic. 10. If you need assistance during the show, please go to your nearest volunteer usher. If additional assistance is needed the usher will get the appropriate person to further help you. 11. Yes, the parking lot gets busy and public transportation is tricky, but leaving while the show is in progress or before the actors have taken their final bows is discourteous. Wait until it is over and then exit with the rest of the audience.

Emory University’s Festival of Nine Lessons & Carols is a holiday tradition established in 1935. The candlelight evening service on Dec. 8 features choral music and scripture, with readings from special guests in the Emory community. The event, based on the traditional Christmas service at King’s College Chapel in Cambridge, England, features the Emory University Chorus and Concert Choir. For many, it heralds the start of the Christmas season.

The “six hip virtuosi” (Time Out New York) of yMusic play string trio, flute, clarinet and trumpet. The group was created in 2008 to bring a classical chamber music aesthetic to venues outside the traditional concert hall. Since then their orchestrations have inspired works by some of today’s more important artists. The performers, all 30ish, are comfortable with both classical and pop music and have toured and recorded with such artists as Bon Iver, Bjork, Peter Gabriel, the National, Yo-Yo Ma, and the New York Philharmonic. See them at Emory University on Jan. 31.

How to Make the Most Out of a Blue-Bird Day Encore Atlanta’s guide to winter fun on the snow
ccording to archaeologists and cave paintings, men and women began strapping what the Norse called “split pieces of wood or firewood” to their toes to navigate frozen terrain at least 7,000 years ago. About 200 years ago, they discovered they could ski downhill, too. Until then, it was primarily a soggy, cold, often hazardous and physically exhausting mode of travel that we now call cross-country skiing. That all changed in 1868, when 50 ENCOREATLANTA.COM
42-year-old Sondre Norheim won Norway’s first-ever national ski-jumping championship. Norheim, who came from a village in Telemark where locals ski-jumped across rooftops for fun, had equipment and a style that people had never seen before. Instead of just a toe-bind, his skis had a loose heel strap that allowed him to ski downhill by lunging into turns. He didn’t invent telemarking (also called nordic skiing), but Norheim was a fantastic ambassador. Skiing became a sport,

READY TO SLASH THE WHITE WAVE? Part of enjoying your winter trip is understanding the lingo. Here’s a cheat sheet of popular terms. • APRES OR APRES-SKI: Nightlife; chill-out time with friends. • BASECAMP: The village that sits at the bottom of the mountain. • BLUE BIRD DAY: Day with bright blue skies. • BUNNY SLOPE: Practice hill for beginners. • CATCHING AIR: Jumping off the snow. • DUST ON CRUST: A layer of light snow that covers a layer of ice. • EPIC: Good or great. • FACE SHOTS: Little sprays of snow that hit you in the face when you’re in deep powder. • FRESH TRACKS (FRESHIES): Trails that no other skiers or grooming teams have been on. • GNAR/GNARLY: Challenging. • KNAR KNAR: Fresh powder. • POWDER: Snow. • ON-PISTE/OFF-PISTE: Piste is the French term for a ski trail. if you’re going off-piste, you’re backcountry skiing. If you’re on-piste, you’re on groomed runs. • RUN: A mountain trail on which you can ski, snowboard or snowmobile. • SLALOM: A downhill race, often with obstacles, called gates. • SLASHING THE WHITE WAVE: Snowboarding. • SLOPES: Mountain trails. • VERTICAL: The height of the mountain.

something people outside of Scandinavia could enjoy. During the 1930s, people discovered it was easier to ski downhill when the heel is locked down to the ski, and alpine skiing was born. Its popularity eclipsed telemarking at a phenomenal rate, thanks in no small part to Hannes Schneider, who taught soldiers, professional athletes and enthusiastic amateurs across Europe and America for more than 50 years. If you learned to ski by doing a “snowplow” first, you learned his Alberg technique. Schneider, called the “Father of Modern Skiing,” also created the first groomed slope — a mountain where the trees have been removed and the snow smoothed for ease of skiing. He did this at Mount Cranmore, N.H., where he settled after escaping Nazi Germany in 1939. Much has changed since then. American ski resorts do business from Maine to Alaska. Gondolas, ski lifts and five-star hotels replaced rope tows, rustic ski huts and mine hoists. Boot clamps no longer snap your ankle when you fall over; resorts groom runs and sometimes make their own snow. But some things never change: Skiing remains a challenging mix of exercise and adventure — one that comes with a phenomenal

Telemarking Down a Ski Slope
FIND YOUR SWEET SPOT
What’s the true difference between alpine and telemark skiers? “People who telemark are usually the oddball,” says Evan Casey, an avid telemarker who frequents Colorado resorts. “Imagine doing lunges down the mountain,” he says. It looks graceful and unusual next to the flocks of rigid Alpine skiers, and that tends to attract people who want to try new things. What’s satisfying about alpine skiing, he says, is that there’s always something you can learn. It’s easy to see tangible process. Plus, he adds, everywhere you go, it’s beautiful, and “the people are always laid-back with big smiles on their faces.” Although surfers get credit for snowboarding as we know it in the 1970s (they called it “snurfing”), Americans have been strapping barrel planks to their feet and hurtling downhill since the 1920s. Not surprisingly, it attracts people who like to skateboard and surf. “Cross-country skiing is basically running on skis,” Casey says. “Snowcats will groom out miles and miles of trails for those looking for more of an endurance challenge.” If that 54 ENCOREATLANTA.COM

Here’s what you should pack: • 2 hats (one for mountain, one for walking around) • 2 pairs of gloves (one pair of liners, one pair of shells) • 2 fleeces (so one can dry out if needed) • 2 pairs long johns (The Capilene brand from Patagonia is best) • 2 pairs eyewear (good goggles to ski in, cool shades for apres) • Quality lip balm • Good sunblock • 1 neckwarmer • 2-4 pairs thin Thorlo socks • Boot and glove warmers • 1 Helmet If you can, book a room at a ski-in/ski-out resort so you don’t have to lug your gear around. You can rent or buy almost everything you need (including a helmet) on the mountain. If you need long johns and your own set of skis, these metro stores can help. Peter Glenn Ski & Sport (peterglenn.com) in Sandy Springs is an extension of a Vermont outfitting chain that has sold ski equipment and accessories since 1958. You can also find clothing and supplies here for snowboarding, hiking and water sports. Rocky Mountain Ski and Board (rockymountainskiandboard.com), also in Sandy Springs, is a Snowsports Industries America award-winning store that’s been in Atlanta community for more than 40 years. It’s a one-stop shop for ski and snowboarding clothing, gear and accessories for all ages. DEGREES OF DIFFICULTY DECODED Ski resorts have a standardized grading system that ranks slopes according to difficulty. Americans and Canadians use shapes like diamonds, squares and circles; Europeans prefer circles, but the colors mean roughly the same thing. Here’s a guide. • GREEN: A practice area or easy slope good for beginners and children. In Europe, these slopes tend to be unmarked practice areas. • BLUE: Intermediate. Expect steeper hills, an occasional obstacle and more challenging terrain. In Europe, blue is considered a fairly easy trail. • BLACK/BLUE (U.S.) OR RED (EUROPE AND JAPAN): A slope that falls between blue and black in difficulty and is challenging to intermediate-level skiers. • BLACK: For advanced skiers, filled with steep runs, multiple moguls and other obstacles that require expertise. • DOUBLE, TRIPLE BLACK (U.S.) OR ORANGE (EUROPE): For experts. Super-steep, often ungroomed and pitted with hazards like blind cliffs and hairpin turns. • YELLOW (EUROPE): Ski at your own risk. Nobody grooms or patrols these trails, so you should carry an avalanche kit. Sometimes they’re just side-trails off a main run; sometimes they’re truly backcountry trails.

sounds too tame for you, you can hike backcountry trails with your alpine skis on your back for the return trip, or purchase nylon or mohair “skins” to cover cross-country or telemark skis so you can hike with them on. (The “hairs” on the skin provide grip when you’re going uphill.) If you enjoy open, ungroomed tracks and 3 feet of fresh powder, you should try heliskiing. “A helicopter takes you to off-piste places where there’s no grooming team to be found, no crowds, just you and the mountain,” Casey says. “The tour includes beacons, shovels and probing polls — everything you need for an avalanche. It’s not for the faint of heart.” It’s cold, and if you need to relieve yourself, you have to do so in the woods while wearing ski clothes. Also note: If the weather is bad, helicopters won’t fly, so be prepared to sit in a hut if there’s a snowstorm, or look for an outfitter from whom you can rent a snowmobile if your trip is postponed. Speaking of snowmobiles, Casey says:

The Atlanta Ski Club (atlantaskiclub.org) is a nonprofit founded in 1964 to bring snow lovers together for social activities and active adventures. All abilities (and snowboarders) welcome. Activities are held year-round. Upcoming travel events include trips to Big Sky, Montana (Jan. 11-18); Zermatt, Switzerland (Jan. 31-Feb. 8); Park City, Utah (Feb. 8-15); Whistler/Blackcomb, British Columbia, Canada (Feb. 22-March 1); Alyeska, Alaska (Feb. 24-March 2); and Snowmass, Colo. (March 9-16). Want to race competitively? Look for resorts where NASTAR (nastar.com) hosts regional pacesetting trials. It’s fairly inexpensive to run the course and get an official time. That time will be recorded and compared against other people in your division, which is determined by age, gender and ability. The top racers in each division are invited to compete in the Nature Valley NASTAR National Competition. Qualifying times need to be filed by President’s Day annually, so plan accordingly.

FOX FUN FACTS WITH DYSON’S HELP, LOUNGES FULL OF HOT AIR As a part of the Atlanta Better Buildings Challenge, a presidential initiative to make commercial buildings 20 percent more energy-efficient by 2020, the Fox Theatre is always looking for new technologies that will enhance visitors’ experiences while preserving the facility’s history and our natural resources. The latest innovations can be found in the (shhh!!!) bathrooms, specifically, the lower-level lounges. The Fox has partnered with Dyson to install new hand- drying technology. The new dryers have less impact on the environment (emitting up to 73 percent less carbon dioxide than other hand dryers and up to 69 percent less than recycled paper towels). They also cost less to operate, up to 69 percent less per year than other hand dryers and up to 97 percent less than paper towels. In less than 14 seconds (and at a speed of 420 mph), the trademarked Dyson Airblade dryers scrape water from hands like a windshield wiper. A version used at the sink washes and dries the hands. Look for them in the lower ladies’ lounge, the lower men’s lounges and lounges throughout the Spanish Room. Here are a few more facts about the new dryers: ★ Dyson Airblade V and Tap hand dryers are powered by a digital motor that spins 92,000 times a minute. ★ Only Dyson Airblade dryers are certified hygienic by NSF International, an independent, nonprofit, global public health and safety organization.

★ HEPA filters remove 99.97 percent of bacteria at 0.3 microns from the air used to dry hands. So hands are dried using cleaner air, not dirty restroom air.
