Around the time humans started dipping their fingers in ochre and telling stories on cave walls, a group of shamans forged flutes from bone and drums from animal skin. Those shamans were, by definition, healers, and the sounds they made with their flutes and drums were part of the therapeutic benefits they offered to their fellow early men. Many thousands of years later, after World War I, musicians followed in the shamans’ footsteps by performing for wounded soldiers in military hospitals. Music was seen as a valuable path out of the darkness. A century later, that conviction still holds.
Music as healer. As peacemaker. As the sonic mapping of our past journeys and the hopeful anthem for what is ahead. And something happens when we give over to the feeling, the rolling current of emotions a song can evoke, especially up close and personal.
Sidebar: I came late to the game of appreciating and following Tiny Desk Concerts — a video series of live concerts that feel impromptu where musicians gather around a desk to perform intimate arrangements of their work. The vibe is private and playful. It’s unpretentious and reveals what I can only imagine is the soul of an artist who would be performing no matter if they hit it big or not. Because they must. Because music isn’t their choice, it’s their calling. They can no more resist it than will themselves to stop breathing.
Well, tonight you are going to be up close and personal with such an artist — a prolific entertainer with stories that sweep the globe but is decidedly homegrown. Atlanta’s own Adam L. McKnight delivers a powerful message: When we choose love and raise our voice to unite a community, surely peace and joy will conquer hate and strife. And I believe him. McKnight draws inspiration from gospel-style compositions just as effortlessly as he evokes rhythmic-pop celebration in this evening of eclectic musical storytelling.
And while the stories are uniquely Adam’s, the journey is all ours. It is a journey that reminds you to hold onto the good and let go of the bad. A journey that promises redemption before we ever asked. It is a journey of Love. And what a gift it is.

THE MUSIC, THE VILLAGE, THE ME
STORY BY Ashley Elliott
The Music. The Village. The Me. These are moments in Adam L. McKnight’s show that he believes comprise who he is as a vocalist, songwriter, and musician.
“Actually, [it] was Patdro [Harris]’s idea to present three aspects of my life and career,” says McKnight. “The Music is just a presentation of what I would describe as my versatility as a vocalist and songwriter. It includes music I’ve performed throughout my career by artists I’ve admired. The Village is a segment that signifies my years of collaborations with different artists and groups.”

Adam L. McKnight on music, spirituality, and his journey to the Hertz Stage
Community — or the Village he speaks of is important to McKnight because he believes that there isn’t an obstacle that can’t be overcome when people band together to accomplish it for the benefit of all. “I believe that to achieve any goal, no person stands alone. Just like this show, it takes a group or village to get it done!”
When asked to expound on “The Me,” Adam became more introspective, reflecting on his childhood. “Like most young black kids growing up in the South in the 1960s, my music started with singing in the church.” Adam sang in various choirs at church before he was enrolled in schools that had previously been segregated and finally had the opportunity to take music classes.
At school, he learned to play the trumpet, joining marching bands in high school and a performance band comprised of trumpet players. Despite excelling at the trumpet, it was there that he discovered that singing was his true calling.
After his first year of college, he transferred to Tuskegee University on a choir scholarship, where he learned by listening to other accomplished vocalists. “Singing spirituals in the choir there helped me to connect more with my emotions,” he says, “which I can say solidified the base of my musical journey.”
Spirituality has always been important to McKnight. “It’s what makes me who I am,” he says. “What I always want to do is create honest, positive, and inspiring music to hopefully uplift someone’s life or day.” His faith has given him the strength to touch the world through his music, from touring with Elton John, recording with Whoopi Goldberg, performing at the Super Bowl Halftime Show with the Children’s Choir and Maroon 5, and serving as the Associate Artistic Director of Ballethnic.
He’s embraced the fact that music is his life and what he’s meant to do.
This is an opportunity to share all of who I am and what I do.

“My mother always said to me, ‘Baby, you can be whoever you want to be,’ and she believed this by faith. From the moment I stepped out in faith, there have been no regrets. Music has been a power in my life because I’ve been able to survive doing what I’ve been gifted the ability to do.”
Adam has had many exciting opportunities to share his own music, including three albums of original music, songs for various commercials, a special composition and performance for Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, and, most recently, two songs with his gospel choir, Voice of Atlanta, for the recently released MGM/Orion film Till.
McKnight says that his writing process varies, with ideas presenting themselves to him while he is driving, cleaning, or watching a TV show. At times, the music and lyrics don’t flow as freely, especially if events happening in his life prevent creative flow, but Adam doesn’t believe in pushing it. “I jot the ideas down and when I’m able to get away to the mountains or the beach with me, God, and nature, I look at those ideas, find a beat, and let the creative process take me wherever it goes.”
McKnight thinks that the music is the easiest part of the show’s creative process but says that, overall, the creation of the show itself has been great due to the show’s creative team, including Co-Producers Amanda Watkins and Kay Nilest, who “have been completely supportive and helpful in guiding me through certain adaptable areas that [he’s] not necessarily accustomed to.” He also thanks Director Patdro Harris and Music Director William Green, as they were with him at the start of his professional career.
“My difficulty,” McKnight says, “is that I have years of stories that have helped me sustain my life as a musician and the day-to-day trials endured to get here. To refine that down to some key areas that portray who I am is the biggest task.”
Despite the challenge to pare his stories down into a 75-minute show, McKnight is thrilled to share his music with audiences who may have only seen him in specific environments that are limited to one aspect of him as a musician, such as gospel music, at nightclub shows, or periodic theatrical performances.
“The most exciting and impactful aspect [of this show],” he says, “is the opportunity to share my voice, my music, and my heart with those who don’t know me. This is an opportunity to share all of who I am and what I do.”

“MY FAVORITE THINGS” AND THE POWER OF MUSIC TO CONNECT AND COMFORT
STORY BY Kay Nilest
If you type “My Favorite Things” into Google, the first thing that comes up is a video from The Sound of Music. Maria sits on a bed surrounded by the Von Trapp children who have been driven to her side by a raging storm. She soothes them by singing about “raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens/bright copper kettles and warm woolen mittens,” and other things that bring her happiness when she’s feeling down. This scene does more than cement the song as a classic, it demonstrates the power of music and community to provide comfort in hard times.
Although “My Favorite Things” is not explicitly a holiday song, it is featured on many holiday playlists and concerts. The holidays can be a difficult time of the year. When the days become shorter, darker, and colder, it is common to experience heightened feelings of despair or isolation. According to American Family Physician, one in twenty Americans experience Seasonal Affective Disorder, or a “combination of biologic and mood disturbances” during the autumn and winter months1. Combine this with the fact that the holiday season can be a time of loneliness or discomfort, and we have a troubling situation.
For this reason, many people lean on traditions around the holidays. People cook their favorite meals, put up annual decorations, and listen to familiar music because they unlock deep memories of warmth and joy. The act of sharing such traditions with loved ones further alleviates feelings of seasonal isolation.
Songs like “My Favorite Things” are classics not just because of their catchy tunes or nostalgia, but because they light a path through dark times. This message of celebrating that which we love has led many artists to recreate the classic. In fact, if you continue down the Google results, you’ll discover dozens of covers of the song. There is the 1965 version by The Supremes, the 2003 instrumental hip hop cover by the Atlanta group OutKast, the 2017 metal version by Victoria K, and even the performance by Adam L. McKnight today.
This song is a testament to how powerful gratitude for the good things in life can be in overcoming the bad. In the words of the song, “When the dog bites/when the bee stings/when I’m feeling sad/I simply remember my favorite things/and then I don’t feel so bad.”
1 STUART L. KURLANSIK, P. A. (2012). Seasonal Affective Disorder. American Family Physician, 1037-1041.

We are committed to creating a safe space for artists, local and abroad, to showcase their gifts to thousands of people between our live shows and digital footprint. It is also a big part of our mission to create a culture of support for these artists and black-owned businesses that promotes sustainable growth for the service and value they provide to our community and the world.
Feels ATL and A Gift of Love with Adam L. McKnight share the same commitment of showcasing artists of color through R&B music and creating a safe space for their gifts to thrive. Furthermore, connecting the community to the art in these safe spaces is a huge conduit for much needed healing, inspiration, and growth for anyone entering into these atmospheres. We are excited to continue the work and inspire others to do the same.
