Attend the Tale of Peter Rabbit™! We’re thrilled you made it into the burrow for this momentous occasion — the first time human beings have been invited to glimpse this vibrant and secretive underground animal world. A world where Beatrix Potter’s beloved animals live full lives and do much more than domestic chores and sip chamomile tea. With her scientific eye, Beatrix Potter showed us that the more you examine the natural world, the more miraculous and wondrous it appears. In this burrow, these tiny animals dream, dance, sing, struggle, and support one another. They share the land, share their grief and uphold the community. But if you look closer (and Beatrix Potter always did), mild peril is always lurking. One wrong move, and Mr. McGregor might bake you into a pie! Yet look closer still, and you just might find hope in the least likely of places or healing in the very things that frighten you.

So thank you for making this journey. When you leave the burrow, make sure to head over to the High Museum to experience Beatrix Potter’s original paintings and sketches in their stunning exhibition, Beatrix Potter: Drawn to Nature. And before you return to your own chores and chamomile tea, take a minute to look closer. There is awe and wonder hiding in even the smallest of things.

MAKING A WONDERFUL WORLD FOR EVERYONE

Writer-Director Mark Valdez on Rehearsals, Mental Health, and A Certain Little Rabbit

Mark Valdez describes the call he got from the Alliance Theatre asking him to write and direct Into the Burrow: A Peter Rabbit™ Tale as “one of the best phone calls [he has] ever gotten.”

“Of course, I immediately said yes!” he says. “For many years now, I have been curious and interested in creating immersive pieces that let the audience be a part of the action. Their presence is important to the action of the story. The characters can see them. There is no fourth wall. This aspect of the project was very exciting.”

Although Valdez didn’t grow up with the Peter Rabbit™ stories, he was familiar with the name and, over the course of this project, has become a huge fan. “[Beatrix Potter’s] illustrations are so good! There’s detail — the fur, the color, the eyes; she’s a master artist. And what I appreciate about her stories is that they are not sentimental — quite the opposite, really. They are often very matter-of-fact. They can be sweet, but they’re never treacly. And when bad things happen, the animals find ways of moving forward, which I really like.”

These animals are very important to Valdez as well. Although he says that writing a story based on such beloved characters is “exciting and daunting,” he really enjoyed fleshing out the characters. “Peter Rabbit™ and the other [characters] are a mainstay of our culture,” he says. “It was very exciting (and more than a little daunting!) to have the opportunity to create a new story for these well-known figures.”

To begin the process, he spent a lot of time with the original stories, poring over the illustrations and trying

programfeature | 9

to imagine each character’s life beyond the page. “For instance,” he says, “I was asking myself, ‘What do they sound like? What would they do at a party? What is the thing they most enjoy and that makes them laugh?’ By asking these questions, I got to know them better and then I was able to select which ones needed to be in this play. I knew I wanted them each to have a talent or skill, so part of my imagining was picturing them performing for each other. That was a fun exercise.”

The characters he ended up selecting to be featured in Into the Burrow: A Peter Rabbit™ Tale, were Benjamin Button, Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle, Squirrel Nutkin, Mr. Alderman Ptolemy Tortoise, Jeremy Fisher, Mr. McGregor, and, of course, Peter. By parsing out the relationships the characters have with each other in the books, he was able to select the ones that he felt would carry along the story. “I could recognize them as a community, as friends. That informed the message I want to convey, which is that we need each other to get us through the difficult moments and to celebrate the wonderful times, too. Community and friendship are important. And sharing the land and the food. It’s about taking care of each other in all the different ways.”

When describing the rehearsal process, Valdez says it involves “a lot of working and a lot of laughing.” There have been a few workshops with test audiences before the official rehearsal process started, and the overwhelmingly positive feedback gave Valdez and the entire creative team the energy to go forward, knowing they were on the right track. In the rehearsal room, they spend time at a table (“doing a lot of talking to make sure we are all on the same page, understanding how the story is unfolding and how the characters are changing”) and then time staging the show, on their feet (“making sure that movement can help tell the story, which is everything from the way characters walk and move to the pictures we create with all the bodies on the set”).

“The thing that remains consistent, though,” Valdez adds, “is the sense of fun. I try very hard to make space for the actors to be playful, to manifest joy, especially in a story like this that’s about friendship and community.”

One thing that was very important to both Valdez and his partners at the Alliance from the very beginning of the process was the emphasis on mental health and maintaining healthy coping skills. Although these subjects of conversation may seem too heavy to discuss with children, they are crucial. Valdez and his team integrate this topic well in the play, giving kids a great opportunity to jumpstart conversations with their grownups.

alliancetheatre.org | @alliancetheatre | encore 10
Mark Valdez

“At one point Peter lashes out,” Valdez says, describing one of these discussion starting points. “His feelings are too big for his little body and all he can do is get angry. Not because he’s mad, but because he’s frustrated that he doesn’t know how to talk about it, and that frustration builds up and becomes anger. I want young people to be able to see this so that they know it’s okay and for them to know that they can be sad sometimes. I want them to also know that they have friends and family to help them get through those difficult times.”

“I think the last few years have been very hard on everybody,” Valdez continues, “and especially [hard on] young people because grownups sometimes forget that young people experience the same sense of loss, grief, and trauma as adults. We try so hard to shield young people from these difficult things that we convince ourselves that youth don’t feel these things. The truth is that young people feel all the feelings that adults do, they just don’t always have all the words to talk about them [in] the ways that grownups can.”

When asked what he hopes audiences leave the building with, Valdez says he hopes that he and the entire cast and creative team can “make clear the message of community — that we all need each other. This plays out in multiple ways — that humans and animals need to share the land to live together. We need our friends to help us get through the difficult times in our lives. Throughout the play we repeat this saying: ‘Take care of your friends; take care of the land. Share your food and lend a helping hand.’ If everyone can remember that, if they can carry that message in their hearts, then I think we can make a truly wonderful world for everyone.”

FURTHER INTO THE BURROW

As the audience enters through the doors leading down to the Hertz Stage, they walk into a Beatrix Potter landscape, with charming cottages in the distance. There are trees, painted and real. One tree leads into an underground lair. This is the world that Ms. Potter’s animals inhabit.

Once we walk “into the burrow,” we are in Peter’s house, which he shares with his siblings, Mopsy, Flopsy, and Cotton-tail. The audience stays in the burrow throughout the whole play, but the animal characters leave the burrow to visit Mr. McGregor’s farm.

Peter and the other rabbits in the story live in the burrow, the main setting for our story. A burrow is a hole dug underground where rabbits can eat and sleep. Peter’s burrow is bright and bold in color and is a place where he can socialize with his dearest friends.

Audience members are invited into the burrow to celebrate Peter’s birthday. How do you think the animals will react to seeing humans in the burrow?

When Peter and his friends visit Mr. McGregor’s Garden, the play uses shadow puppetry to show what is happening to the characters outside of the burrow.

Shadow puppetry is a form of theatrical performance that originated in China and on the Indonesian islands of Java and Bali. This type of puppetry often includes music, singing, and the shadows of puppets cast onto a screen to tell a story. Flat images are manipulated by the puppeteers between a bright light and a translucent screen, on the other side of which sits the audience. The contrast and movement between light and shadow bring the puppet characters to life.

The shadow puppetry in today’s performance was designed by Raymond Carr and has been pre-recorded.

BEHIND THE WOMAN, BEATRIX POTTER

Beatrix Potter’s beloved children’s tales have inspired readers for well over a century. The animals and places breathed to life in stories such as The Tale of Peter Rabbit™, The Tale of Benjamin Bunny, The Tale of Mr. Jeremy Fisher, The Tale of Squirrel Nutkin, and The Tale of Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle have stood the test of time. They continue to delight households over bedtime reading and to educate young people in classroom story time. Potter’s writing is elegant, without being dusty; it’s smart, while still being accessible; her stories are simple and sweet, without being treacly. A craft like this paints characters with extraordinary staying power — a wealth of friends with whom we can grow and learn. Her skill as a writer is only matched by her skill as an illustrator, a talent she first started to hone at the age of eight, while spending summer holidays in Perthshire, Scotland.

A less well-known fact about Beatrix Potter is that she was an ardent conservationist, with a fierce love of nature and animals. Spending summers in Scotland, and later in the mountainous regions of the Lake District, Potter was given an escape to open air natural habitats, away from the somewhat oppressive expectations of a young woman in England’s Victorian Era. She had a variety of pets (which she drew constantly), from mice to hedgehogs, and even a collection of butterflies. She was fascinated by almost all natural sciences and even developed theories (including one on reproduction) that, because of her sex and amateur status, were rebuked.

An entrepreneur at heart, Potter sketched and painted her own greeting cards to send to friends, while away on holiday. Upon hearing that her former governess’ son was ill, she illustrated a letter in the form of a short story about a rabbit named Peter (inspired by her own pet) and his three siblings, thus launching her career as an illustrator and writer. Gaining independence from the sales of the books that followed, Potter began to buy parcels of land that protected the open fields where sheep grazed as well as woodlands and land that channeled rainfall. She became involved in community planning, resisting developers and restoring and preserving farms.

A creative thinker, an entrepreneur, a conservationist. All of these titles that can be attributed to the legacy behind the name Beatrix Potter are ever present in her carefully drawn characters that inspire Into the Burrow: A Peter Rabbit™ Tale. In today’s production, behind the rally cry of Peter’s “Let’s take back the garden!” you can hear young Potter’s frustration at not being taken seriously by other scientists when she took her findings about lichens to the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew. When Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle thinks creatively and uses her tap dancing to set off the traps in Mr. McGregor’s garden, you can see Potter as a young woman lifting up friends and family with beautifully illustrated greeting cards. When Mr. Jeremy Fisher screams “Let’s do it for the butterflies!” you can sense Beatrix Potter, the conservationist. Behind all of the characters in her writings, you will have a peak at the real writer and illustrator Beatrix Potter, a woman ahead of her time.

Take Care of Your Friends, Take Care of the Land

Mr. McGregor is destroying the plants our friends in the Burrow need in order to survive! He’s chopping down trees, mowing over bushes, and leaving Peter and his friends without their natural habitats. How could Mr. McGregor and the animals share the land peacefully and equally?

Draw a picture to demonstrate how people and animals might co-exist on Mr. McGregor’s farm.

When most people read a script for the first time, they envision how the actors will move across the stage, predict what the costumes will look like, or imagine what the set will reveal.

Me? I read a script looking for connections to school curriculum. My first read-through of Into the Burrow: A Peter Rabbit™ Tale was no exception:

How can educators connect Jeremy Fisher’s love of water to the water cycle? How will schools with their own gardens react when the characters steal vegetables from Mr. McGregor? Will students recognize that destroying milkweed bushes interrupts the butterfly life cycle?

The Alliance Theatre Institute partners with districts and schools to elevate teacher practice and impact student academic and social-emotional growth through arts integration, STEAM, and theater. In the 2022-23 school year, the Institute partnered with roughly 4,000 teachers, 23,000 students, and 420 schools through in-school residencies, workshops, and professional learning events.

These partnerships extend to our field trip program, which allows us to serve even more schools and students. The Institute builds on curriculum connections to develop resources so that students will not only enjoy, but also learn from the play. All school groups attending this production will receive a study guide that helps them explore the play’s themes, characters, and more.

Each time I read the script for Into the Burrow, I find connections to curriculum and brainstorm arts-integrated lessons, such as writing persuasive letters to Mr. McGregor or creating frozen tableaux to re-tell the story, but I am even more energized by the meaningful social-emotional connections.

Peter and his friends repeat the following refrain: “Take care of your friends, take care of the land, share the food, and give a helping hand. Remember, you’re never alone.”

While water cycles, food safety, and butterflies might be grade-level specific standards, these lessons are universal. How can we build community, navigate grief, celebrate milestones, and embrace the challenges of tomorrow?

As we welcome school groups and families to see this production, my hope is that no matter their age, they will make their own connections to these beloved characters, this new story, and these important themes.

SYNOPSIS

All the neighborly forest animals have gathered in the rabbit’s burrow (under Mr. McGregor’s garden) to throw a surprise party for Peter. And the biggest surprise of all — for the first time ever, they’ve invited you to join them! But the animals soon realize Mr. McGregor has terrible plans for the land around Peter’s den. Peter must face his fears and, together with his friends, gather a community to help save his home. Featuring beloved characters from the classic Beatrix Potter tales, and a variety of original songs, this new story encourages us to acknowledge our fears and work together to overcome challenges.

Celebrating our supporters who have made a legacy gift to the Alliance Theatre.

The Legacy Society celebrates individuals who have made a planned gift to the Alliance Theatre. Making a planned gift is a wonderful way to show your support and appreciation for the Alliance Theatre and its mission, while accommodating your financial, estate planning and philanthropic goals. With smart planning, you may increase the size of your estate and/or reduce the tax burden on your heirs. Just as important, you will know that you have made a meaningful and lasting contribution to the Alliance Theatre.

To learn more about the Legacy Society, please contact Lindsay Ridgeway-Baierl at lindsay.ridgeway-baierl@alliancetheatre.org.
