More inpatient surgeries than anyone else. Even major surgery doesn’t seem so major – not when you have world-class surgeons and the most advanced technology available. Not only do WellStar surgeons perform more than 40,000 procedures every year – more than any other health system in metro Atlanta – but they also train other doctors. They’ve shared their expertise on minimally invasive procedures with leading U.S. medical centers and on spinal surgery with doctors from around the world. Put the most advanced medical technology in their hands – including the da Vinci robotic surgical system – and you have world-class surgical care. Why would you have surgery anywhere else?

Beauty & the Beast Star Liz Shivener on living her Disney princess dreams
Joan Marcus
ike a lot of little girls, Liz Shivener grew up loving the Disney films of her youth. But unlike most little girls, Shivener actually grew up to become one of the famed “Disney Princesses,” performing the lead role of Belle in a touring production of the Broadway hit Beauty & the Beast. We recently spoke with the 23-year-old New Yorker to find out how it feels to star in the “tale as old as time,” which has now played to over 35 million people. You grew up in the late ’80s and early ’90s, when Disney was going through a renaissance. Were you a fan of the Disney princesses? Oh, yes. I was four when the Beauty & the Beast film came out, and I loved Belle. She’s my favorite Disney princess because she stands for something and is
more integral to the plot. It’s becoming huge to wear the princess tiaras and the costumes, but Belle is a substantial role model because she’s a very strong woman. She’s a renaissance woman before her time, and it’s cool to be a part of that. It’s obviously a huge role. How did you get the part? The casting director saw me in my senior year of college at Otterbein University [in Westerville, Ohio]. I scheduled an audition and went back for many callbacks, with more important people behind the table every time. I was lucky enough to get it. The entire Broadway creative team — director Rob Ross, choreographer Matt West, costume designer Ann Hold-Ward and writer Linda Woolverton (who wrote Beauty & the Beast and co-wrote The Lion Continued on page 52 Atlanta’s Performing Arts Publication 9

Not your daddy-o’s West Side Story T
his is the West Side Story that Arthur Laurents always wanted to do. Its contemporary attitude matches the sharp edges of Leonard Bernstein’s music — the jangles, the tension, the screaming strings and horns. Its Jets and Sharks are not the prettied-up punks found on screen and stage in the 1950s and ’60s. They are dangerous, scratching out life and fighting to their death for a grimy slice of New York real estate. 12 EncoreAtlantA.com
“I felt the gangs in the original production were sweet little things,” Laurents has often said in talking and writing about the Broadway revival and subsequent national tour. “And the truth is, they’re all killers — every one of them. I wanted to do a much tougher West Side Story.” Laurents, now 92, a playwright, librettist, stage director and screenwriter Continued on page 56

GOLDEN RULES The following brief, but important, article has been published to assist in audience etiquette. To this day we get at least one phone call a week asking for reprint rights. These calls and letters come from orchestras and theatres, opera and ballet companies all over the United States and Canada, big and little troupes alike. The message, telegraphed between the lines, seems to be an S.O.S.: American audiences are out of control. Are they? Here’s a refresher course. Please read on, and remember, part of one’s pact as an audience member is to take seriously the pleasure of others, a responsibility fulfilled by quietly attentive (or silently inattentive) and selfcontained behavior. After all, you can be as demonstrative as you want during bows and curtain calls. 1. Go easy with the atomizer; many people are highly allergic to perfume and cologne. 2. If you bring a child, make sure etiquette is part of the experience. Children love learning new things. 3. Unwrap all candies and cough drops before the curtain goes up or the concert begins. 4. Make sure cell phones, beepers, and watch alarms are OFF. And don't jangle the bangles. 5. The overture is part of the performance. Please cease talking at this point. 6. Note to lovebirds: When you lean your heads together, you block the view of the person behind you. Leaning forward also blocks the view. 7. THOU SHALT NOT TALK, or hum, or sing along, or beat time with a body part. 8. Force yourself to wait for a pause or intermission before rifling through a purse, backpack, or shopping bag. 9. Yes, the parking lot gets busy and public transportation is tricky, but leaving while the show is in progress is discourteous. 10. Honor the old standby: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.

After a 16-week U.K. run, it premiered in the U.S. on April 27, 2010, in San Francisco, before moving on to the Orange County [Calif.] Performing Arts Center last fall. Atlanta is only the third U.S. city to host the play, and the first on the East Coast. Shows run from now through March 20, in conjunction with weekly backstage “Into Neverland” tours. The play may look like nothing that’s come before, but the storyline is on track with the original. “It’s the story of Peter Pan,” says co-producer Robert Butters. “So, for us, it’s really about telling that story for today. We are very true to the word of the play and we make sure that audiences of all ages can enjoy the show.” Butters’ own children are a testament to the show’s ability to reach diverse age groups. His 3-year-old son is particularly enamored with it and has started going around the house shirtless, acting like Captain Hook. “He understands the story,” Butters explains. “[And] because it has such great imagery, it also allows him to connect to it. leven years ago, the Atlanta Jewish Film Festival (AJFF) debuted with 24 films and attracted 2,000 viewers. By 2010, the AJFF was screening more than 50 films and attracting more than 20,000 people to its three venues (Lefont Sandy Springs, Regal Cinemas Atlantic Station Stadium 16 and Regal Cinemas Medlock Crossing Stadium 18). This year, the festival expands again, with a full 20-day schedule, running Feb. 8-27, and a new venue in Marietta — GTC Merchants Walk 12 Cinema. “After record attendance at our 10th anniversary festival, we recognized the time had come to scale up AJFF for a new decade,” stated AJFF Executive Director Kenny Blank. “This expansion of dates and venues will translate to richer programming, increased access and an improved festival experience for patrons.” The AJFF is the largest film festival in Atlanta and the second-largest Jewish film festival in America. It is sponsored by the Atlanta Chapter of the American Jewish Committee, an 50 EncoreAtlantA.com
international advocacy organization that believes that understanding grows out of shared experiences, and that stories are often the best way to create such experiences. The rich narratives found in the festival’s films create a forum for cinematic storytellers, who represent voices from several countries and many religious viewpoints. “I’ve been trying to program a film festival that defies people’s expectation of what a Jewish film festival is,” Blank told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution last year. “It’s not [just] Holocaust films or films about the Palestinian conflict. We wanted to surprise and delight people with the diversity of offerings and have it be a way for the larger community to experience first-class film.” The 2011 schedule includes cutting-edge works as well as classics such as The Diary of Anne Frank and Chariots of Fire. This role has been around for decades, in books, movies and TV shows. How do you put your own stamp on Belle while staying true to the history of the character? That really is the challenge — respecting the precedent — because Belle is so iconic to little girls and they have a preconceived notion of who she is. I’m trying to make her 3-D, rather than a cartoon, so I really try playing into her bookworm side. When the love story takes hold, I portray the awkwardness, the way you snort when you laugh, make silly decisions and make a goofball of yourself. I’m trying to bring reality into this fairy tale story, playing Belle as goofy, sassy and kind of a smart-aleck. 52 EncoreAtlantA.com
What does it mean to you to inspire a new generation of girls? It’s incredible! Meeting the children afterwards is one of my favorite parts. It’s great to be able to talk to them and to put theater into the lives of people across the country. With the recession, average middle class families like the one I grew up in can’t really go to Disney World anymore. To be that escape for them is really an honor. I worked hard, and here I am living this dream of mine. It’s quite a privilege to be a princess, to be Belle, to these children. How is the stage production different from the film? It’s the same story everyone loves, but with added material. You get to see Cogsworth before he was a clock, why the Beast is so angry, and you learn more about Belle and her father. What I love about the play is that there’s more music: All of Alan Menken and Howard Ashman’s original songs are there, along with new songs Tim Rice wrote the lyrics to after Howard Ashman’s passing. It’s just a well-rounded story that allows you to spend more time with the characters you love.

creative. We knew we would eventually do some kind of performance, but we never envisioned a commercial theater run.” Blue Man Group’s wildly popular, always evolving theater piece has been a mainstay in New York, Boston and Chicago for years. Now touring the country for the first time, there are also productions in Las Vegas and Orlando, and there are or have been productions in Tokyo and throughout Europe.
The show is an absurd and wondrous blend of music, painting, science and technology, as the Blue Men silently engage in a variety of set pieces that run the gamut from primitive and childlike to witty and sophisticated. Although the Blue Man been around for more than two decades, his founders still can’t entirely explain where he came from. Like the character himself, his origin is enigmatic. “There really isn’t an explanation,” says Goldman. “Chris dug up a picture that he drew when he was five years 54 EncoreAtlantA.com
old, and it had three blue men in it. And I had a thing in my wallet for years with a blue tribe in South America. I don’t know why it was there; I never put pictures in my wallet. We think the Blue Man has always been here. The best answer is that we found each other.” The traits of the Blue Man developed gradually. “We wanted to make a statement about community, about the power of a group, as opposed to the American individualist mentality,” says Stanton. “We thought the character would express community through something tribal, and drumming seemed the way to go. Chris had trained as a drummer, and I was from a really musical background. We wanted to draw from our own interests and backgrounds, and bring them into some kind of performance. We wanted to express something about the process, or the impulse to create.” They developed material for three years, performing in downtown clubs and event spaces. In 1991, they were invited to perform at La MaMa, offoff-Broadway. The show created a buzz, and that summer Blue Man Group took part in Lincoln Center’s Serious Fun Festival. In the fall they moved offBroadway to the Astor Place Theater, where they remain to this day.

since 1945, has that right. He’s painted this masterpiece of American musical theater his way, and has, for the most part, done so to acclaim. Here’s what some along the road to Atlanta have said: • The Omaha [Neb.] WorldHerald: “Laurents … has done a masterful job of staying true to the 1957 version while punching up the realism with more Spanish, tougher gangs, even a less hopeful ending. Laurents was ruthless about removing anything that felt dated or false.” • The Detroit News: “This mesmerizing show feels newborn fresh in the care of a youthful cast that brings the whole theatrical package — singing, dancing and acting in a seamless blend of skills and storytelling… . Perhaps because issues of skin color, religion and language continue to isolate us from each other, much as they did half a century ago when West Side Story first 56 EncoreAtlantA.com
appeared, this joyous and tragic musical has retained a keen edge of relevance.” • The Oakland Press: “This West Side Story is spectacular. It’s more than a revival; it’s a renewal of everything that made the original production so unforgettable.” In the published version of his original script, Laurents used the word “nice” to describe one of the Jets, and “slightly whacky” to describe Jets ringleader Riff — hardly adjectives associated with killers. “I don’t think any of them are nice,” Laurents says now. “What I thought 50 years ago, I certainly don’t think today. If you never change the way you think, if you stand still, you’re dead. A lot of my ideas have changed, and this whole production is radically different from what it was back then. It would have to be.” One thing hasn’t changed. The character of Anita (played here by Michelle Aravena) is very much a focal

The show also speaks, she says, to the youthful type of theatergoers who favor shows such as Mamma Mia and Jersey Boys. “We have really, really young audiences, and this is an old musical,” she says. “I think Arthur was incredibly smart when he said that this piece is timeless, because it certainly is.” Kathy Janich is an Atlanta theater artist and freelance writer. point. As the sister of the Sharks’ leader, Bernardo, and best friend to lovesick Maria, she witnesses more than any other character the joy and pain the world can offer. She has some groundbreaking footsteps in which to follow. The great Chita Rivera first played Anita, creating the role on Broadway in 1957. Debbie Allen played the role in a 1980 revival and Karen Olivo, who played Anita in the current Broadway revival (shuttering Jan. 2), won a Tony Award for her work. Luckily, Aravena knows the show, and her role, well. She played Jets wannabe Anybodys at age 14 in summer stock. She played a Shark girl at La Scala, the famous opera house in Milan, Italy, a decade ago. And she did Anita in 2007 at the Walnut Street Theatre in Philadelphia. She’s glad to be back in Anita’s skin. “I love when you get to revisit a role later in your life,” the speed-talking Connecticut native says. “There are so many more things you can bring to it.” Words like “fiery,” “feisty” and “sassy” come to Aravena’s lips when describing her Anita. “She’s very prideful,” the actor says, “proud of her people and heritage but she doesn’t believe in the gangs, in the fighting, in the separation.” Laurents’ vision, she says, reflects more accurately what life is like today — much more dangerous than life was in the ’50s, with young people who have much more anger.
