president’s letter Greetings, My name is Stanley Romanstein and I’m the new president of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. It is an honor to welcome you to the third and best season yet of live music performances at our Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre at Encore Park. Just a few days after I officially started at the Orchestra, I had the pleasure of seeing rock legend Van Morrison perform at our Amphitheatre and was thrilled to witness the enthusiasm and energy running through the audience. And I feel just as thrilled to be heading up this great institution that had the vision and determination to team with the North Fulton community to build this marvelous venue. By way of introduction, I grew up in Charleston, S.C., listening to and making music. As a kid I had plenty of sports heroes, but my real and lasting hero was Robert Shaw, the legendary music director and choral master of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. The Orchestra and Mr. Shaw were my inspiration, which is why being invited to lead this fantastic organization into a new era is both humbling and incredibly exciting. Part of what excites me is this unbelievable amphitheatre. It represents so well what can happen when inspiration takes hold. The Orchestra is enormously proud to operate this wonderful community asset and proud, too, of the partnerships with the community leaders of North Fulton which were vital in helping us making it a reality. I know as well as you that our success here and at Atlanta Symphony Hall, for that matter, depends on providing our audience with a quality experience. I look forward to meeting many of you this summer and saying thanks personally, but in the meantime, please know that we appreciate all of you being here and supporting the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. Atlanta Symphony Orchestra The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, currently in its 66th season, is one of America’s leading orchestras, known for the excellence of its live performances, presentations, renowned choruses and its impressive list of Grammy Award-winning recordings. The leading cultural organization in the Southeast, the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra serves as the cornerstone for artistic development and music education in the region. The Orchestra and audiences together explore a creative programming mix, recordings, and visual enhancements, such as Theater of a Concert, the Orchestra’s continuing exploration of different formats, settings and enhancements for the musical performance experience, such as the first concert-staged performances of John Adams’s Doctor Atomic in November 2008. The Atlanta School of Composers reflects Music Director Robert Spano’s and the Orchestra’s commitment to nurturing and championing music through multiyear partnerships defining a new generation of American composers, including Osvaldo Golijov, Jennifer Higdon, Christopher Theofanidis and Michael Gandolfi. Since the beginning of his tenure (to date), Mr. Spano and the Orchestra have performed more than 100 concerts featuring contemporary works including 16 Orchestra-commissioned world premieres and five additional world premieres. During its 32-year history with Telarc, the Orchestra has recorded more than 100 albums and won 27 Grammy Awards in categories including Best Classical Album, Best Orchestral Performance, Best Choral Performance and Best Opera Performance. The Atlanta Symphony Chorus has earned nine Grammy Awards for Best Choral Performance, most recently for the Berlioz Requiem in 2005. The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra performs more than 200 concerts each year to a combined audience of more than a half-million in a full schedule that also features educational and community concerts. A recognized leader and supporter of contemporary American music, the Orchestra recently received the 2007 award for Strongest Commitment to New American Music from the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers. In addition, Mr. Spano was named Musical America 2008 Conductor of the Year. With the opening of the 12,000-seat Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre at Encore Park (vzwamp.com) in May 2008, the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra became the first U.S. orchestra to annually perform and present in its concert hall and in two amphitheaters. Coming into its own Putting patrons first puts an amphitheatre on its way to the top “It starts with the patron,” says Clay Schell. And that says it all. Schell is the veteran promoter and Vice President of Programming for ASO Presents, the contemporary entertainment brand of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. And his quote sums up the philosophy of Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre at Encore Park, a not-for-profit venture operated by the Orchestra and owned by its parent the Woodruff Arts Center. Now in its third year, the Amphitheatre has become North Fulton and North Georgia’s destination venue. “The building has a personality, an atmosphere,” continues Schell. “Honestly, it doesn’t matter who’s on stage; what keeps people coming back is that the venue is easy to use. We get compliments all the time from patrons on how convenient the parking is, and how happy they are about the location and wonderful natural setting to experience music.” 10 Encore Atlanta

The Orchestra knew from day one “we wanted to create a feeling of comfort and delight for audiences,“ says General Manager and Senior Director of Operations Trevor Ralph, “and we continue to push ourselves every day to achieve that.”
The Amphitheatre presented more than 60 concerts and events and attracted more than 380,000 patrons in its first two seasons; after the first few performances of 2010 combined attendance is more than 450,000. This season the venue is expected to have its biggest year yet hosting even more concerts and community events. Among those slated to appear are the Steve Miller Band, Sheryl Crow, Green Day and the BBC’s Planet Earth with the Orchestra (one of only three other venues in the country where it will be performed). And the Amphitheatre’s national reputation continues to grow as it was nominated for the second consecutive year as “Best Major Outdoor Venue” by Pollstar, the industry’s leading and most influential publication. 12 Encore Atlanta

Community Town Square The Amphitheatre is also home to many community events including Alpharetta, Chattahoochee and Northview high schools’ commencement ceremonies this year attended by 18,000 family, friends and guests of the graduates. It has also been the site of the Greater North Fulton Chamber of Commerce gala the last two years, Cystic Fibrosis Foundation benefits and a Seniors Day presented by North Fulton Regional Hospital, as well as meetings sponsored by the Alpharetta Convention and Visitors Bureau. Venue caterer Ovations Food Services engages nonprofit groups to staff vending stations and serve patrons which has reinvested over $350,000 in scout troops, high school boosters, church groups and other civic organizations. Going Forward Don Fox, the Orchestra’s Executive Vice President for Business Operations and Chief Financial Officer, spearheaded the vision of an amphitheater for the North Fulton area. “Even before the design phase, our mantras were to create a destination beyond the stage and give our audience lifetime memories. Today, those guiding principles still influence every decision that is made with respect to our patron experience.” And the future? “To continue to showcase the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, bring in the leading entertainers of our time, and always deliver a great customer experience for our patrons,” says Fox. “If we do that then I think we will position ourselves to be considered the best amphitheatre in the country. That’s what we are aiming for.”

Guest Artists are Patrons Too “As much as we want our audiences to keep coming back we also want our guest artists to return too,” said Lisa Eng, a designer for the Orchestra. Bridget-Michaele Reischl is the first American to win the 1995 Antonio Pedrotti Conducting Competition in Italy. Ms. Reischl has appeared with numerous orchestras, such as the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, Brooklyn Philharmonic Orchestra, the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, the Dayton Philharmonic , Cobb Symphony Orchestra and the Baton Rouge Symphony Orchestra. She also serves as Music Director of the Oberlin Orchestras at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music in Ohio, a post she has held since 2005.

Ms. Reischl’s international career has included engagements with many orchestras throughout Europe. She has recently completed a concert tour of China and will return again to Italy this summer to conduct Mozart’s Marriage of Figaro. Upcoming domestic guest engagements include a return this season to the Traverse Symphony Orchestra and the Cantigas Women’s Chorale in New Jersey. A graduate of the Eastman School of Music and student of Robert Spano, Ms. Reischl continued her studies as a conducting fellow at both the Tanglewood and Aspen music festivals, working with Seiji Ozawa, David Zinman and Murry Sidlin. She has recorded with the following labels: Velut Luna, CRI, and Sea Breeze Record Co. Ms. Reischl is scheduled to record a new release this season on the Telarc label with internationally acclaimed harpist Yolanda Kondonassis.
The Soldiers’ Chorus, founded in 1957, is the vocal complement of the United States Army Field Band of Washington, D.C. The 29-member mixed choral ensemble travels throughout the nation and abroad, performing as a separate component and in joint concerts with the Concert Band of the “Musical Ambassadors of the Army.” The chorus has performed in all 50 states, Canada, Mexico, India, the Far East, and throughout Europe, entertaining audiences of all ages. The musical backgrounds of Soldiers’ Chorus personnel range from opera and musical theater to music education and vocal coaching; this diversity provides unique programming flexibility. In addition to presenting selections from the vast choral repertoire, Soldiers’ Chorus performances often include the music of Broadway, opera, barbershop quartet, and Americana. This versatility has earned the Soldiers’ Chorus an international reputation for presenting musical excellence and inspiring patriotism. Critics have acclaimed recent appearances with the Boston Pops, the Cincinnati Pops, and the Detroit, Dallas, and National symphony orchestras. Other notable performances include four world fairs, American Choral Directors Association conferences, music educator conventions, Kennedy Center Honors Programs, the 750th anniversary of Berlin, and the rededication of the Statue of Liberty.

The first exhibition to focus on Dalí's art after 1940, featuring more than 40 paintings and a related group of drawings, prints and other Dalí objects.
A hot new musical twist on the Dickens classic set in New Orleans, 1928. An orphan in search of home finds family in the most unexpected places. Directed and choreographed by Debbie Allen, with music by Tena Clark and Gary Prim.
