“I was exercising and when my heart rate rose, my jaw went numb and I had some shortness of breath. I called my doctor and saw him the next day. After just a few minutes, he sent me to WellStar Cardiovascular Medicine. It was a huge shock to find that I needed a quintuple bypass. But Dr. Cooper and the whole cardiology team really listened and took care of me. “This was a life-changing experience. I’ve just become chair of the WellStar Foundation’s Cardiac Community Council. It’s important to me to give back and help raise money and awareness for the people that gave me my health, and my peace of mind.”
If you have heart, you can do just about anything. Living well takes planning. It takes perseverance. And most of all, it takes heart. That’s why, every day, across five counties and five hospitals, WellStar is helping people like Tony with a world-class cardiac network. From prevention to catheterization and open-heart surgery to rehabilitation, we put our whole hearts into taking care of yours.
We believe in heart.

president’s letter Greetings, My name is Stanley Romanstein and I’m the new president of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. It is an honor to welcome you to the third and best season yet of live music performances at our Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre at Encore Park. Just a few days after I officially started at the Orchestra, I had the pleasure of seeing rock legend Van Morrison perform at our Amphitheatre and was thrilled to witness the enthusiasm and energy running through the audience. And I feel just as thrilled to be heading up this great institution that had the vision and determination to team with the North Fulton community to build this marvelous venue. By way of introduction, I grew up in Charleston, S.C., listening to and making music. As a kid I had plenty of sports heroes, but my real and lasting hero was Robert Shaw, the legendary music director and choral master of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. The Orchestra and Mr. Shaw were my inspiration, which is why being invited to lead this fantastic organization into a new era is both humbling and incredibly exciting. Part of what excites me is this unbelievable amphitheatre. It represents so well what can happen when inspiration takes hold. The Orchestra is enormously proud to operate this wonderful community asset and proud, too, of the partnerships with the community leaders of North Fulton which were vital in helping us making it a reality. I know as well as you that our success here and at Atlanta Symphony Hall, for that matter, depends on providing our audience with a quality experience. I look forward to meeting many of you this summer and saying thanks personally, but in the meantime, please know that we appreciate all of you being here and supporting the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. Enjoy your summer and come back often!
Sincerely,
Stanley E. Romanstein President Atlanta Symphony Orchestra

Atlanta Symphony Orchestra The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, currently in its 66th season, is one of America’s leading orchestras, known for the excellence of its live performances, presentations, renowned choruses and its impressive list of Grammy Award-winning recordings. The leading cultural organization in the Southeast, the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra serves as the cornerstone for artistic development and music education in the region. The Orchestra and audiences together explore a creative programming mix, recordings, and visual enhancements, such as Theater of a Concert, the Orchestra’s continuing exploration of different formats, settings and enhancements for the musical performance experience, such as the first concert-staged performances of John Adams’s Doctor Atomic in November 2008. The Atlanta School of Composers reflects Music Director Robert Spano’s and the Orchestra’s commitment to nurturing and championing music through multiyear partnerships defining a new generation of American composers, including Osvaldo Golijov, Jennifer Higdon, Christopher Theofanidis and Michael Gandolfi. Since the beginning of his tenure (to date), Mr. Spano and the Orchestra have performed more than 100 concerts featuring contemporary works including 16 Orchestra-commissioned world premieres and five additional world premieres. During its 32-year history with Telarc, the Orchestra has recorded more than 100 albums and won 27 Grammy Awards in categories including Best Classical Album, Best Orchestral Performance, Best Choral Performance and Best Opera Performance. The Atlanta Symphony Chorus has earned nine Grammy Awards for Best Choral Performance, most recently for the Berlioz Requiem in 2005. The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra performs more than 200 concerts each year to a combined audience of more than a half-million in a full schedule that also features educational and community concerts. A recognized leader and supporter of contemporary American music, the Orchestra recently received the 2007 award for Strongest Commitment to New American Music from the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers. In addition, Mr. Spano was named Musical America 2008 Conductor of the Year. With the opening of the 12,000-seat Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre at Encore Park (vzwamp.com) in May 2008, the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra became the first U.S. orchestra to annually perform and present in its concert hall and in two amphitheaters. In Summer 2008, the Orchestra celebrated 35 years at legendary Chastain Park Amphitheater, the award-winning 6,500-seat venue in Atlanta, during its annual Classic Chastain concert series (classicchastain.com). 8 Encore Atlanta

Coming into its own Putting patrons first puts an amphitheatre on its way to the top “It starts with the patron,” says Clay Schell. And that says it all. Schell is the veteran promoter and Vice President of Programming for ASO Presents, the contemporary entertainment brand of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. And his quote sums up the philosophy of Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre at Encore Park, a not-for-profit venture operated by the Orchestra and owned by its parent the Woodruff Arts Center. Now in its third year, the Amphitheatre has become North Fulton and North Georgia’s destination venue. “The building has a personality, an atmosphere,” continues Schell. “Honestly, it doesn’t matter who’s on stage; what keeps people coming back is that the venue is easy to use. We get compliments all the time from patrons on how convenient the parking is, and how happy they are about the location and wonderful natural setting to experience music.” 10 Encore Atlanta

The Orchestra knew from day one “we wanted to create a feeling of comfort and delight for audiences,“ says General Manager and Senior Director of Operations Trevor Ralph, “and we continue to push ourselves every day to achieve that.”
The Amphitheatre presented more than 60 concerts and events and attracted more than 380,000 patrons in its first two seasons; after the first few performances of 2010 combined attendance is more than 450,000. This season the venue is expected to have its biggest year yet hosting even more concerts and community events. Among those slated to appear are the Steve Miller Band, Sheryl Crow, Green Day and the BBC’s Planet Earth with the Orchestra (one of only three other venues in the country where it will be performed). And the Amphitheatre’s national reputation continues to grow as it was nominated for the second consecutive year as “Best Major Outdoor Venue” by Pollstar, the industry’s leading and most influential publication. 12 Encore Atlanta

Community Town Square The Amphitheatre is also home to many community events including Alpharetta, Chattahoochee and Northview high schools’ commencement ceremonies this year attended by 18,000 family, friends and guests of the graduates. It has also been the site of the Greater North Fulton Chamber of Commerce gala the last two years, Cystic Fibrosis Foundation benefits and a Seniors Day presented by North Fulton Regional Hospital, as well as meetings sponsored by the Alpharetta Convention and Visitors Bureau. Venue caterer Ovations Food Services engages nonprofit groups to staff vending stations and serve patrons which has reinvested over $350,000 in scout troops, high school boosters, church groups and other civic organizations. Going Forward Don Fox, the Orchestra’s Executive Vice President for Business Operations and Chief Financial Officer, spearheaded the vision of an amphitheater for the North Fulton area. “Even before the design phase, our mantras were to create a destination beyond the stage and give our audience lifetime memories. Today, those guiding principles still influence every decision that is made with respect to our patron experience.” And the future? “To continue to showcase the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, bring in the leading entertainers of our time, and always deliver a great customer experience for our patrons,” says Fox. “If we do that then I think we will position ourselves to be considered the best amphitheatre in the country. That’s what we are aiming for.”

Guest Artists are Patrons Too “As much as we want our audiences to keep coming back we also want our guest artists to return too,” said Lisa Eng, a designer for the Orchestra. Her specially created posters are just one way of saying thanks to artists like the Dave Matthews Band, Kenny Chesney, the Zac Brown Band, and Van Morrison, to name just a few.

Celebrating the Earth as never before…
We live on a planet of stunning natural beauty. From the towering peaks of Nepal, to the lush green of the Amazon, from the dry-sculpted crescents of the Sahara to glistening polar icecaps, our world is truly spectacular. Planet Earth is the first natural history series to be filmed entirely in High Definition, providing an unparalleled view of awe-inspiring landscapes from all across the globe and incredible footage of the rarely-spotted, almost mythical creatures that live in these habitats. From tracking great migrations, to capturing split-second action, and getting amazing footage of land-based animals in their natural habitats, no matter whether this is a mountain top, the most remote parts of the desert, or the dark depths of the forest floor, Planet Earth is the ultimate portrait of our planet. Four years in the making, this is the Earth celebrated as never before. The world’s premier wildlife cameramen have travelled all over the planet, even to the most far-flung reaches, to create the definitive and biggest look at the diversity of our planet. Prepare to be overwhelmed by the beauty of Planet Earth. Atlanta’s Performing Arts Publication 19
Overture
across the Kalahari Desert in search of water.
Approximately four and half billion years ago there was a cosmic collision that changed the course of history for our then young planet. Out of nowhere came a giant planet the size of Mars which crashed straight into our own young Earth. This terrible impact not only created our Moon, but also knocked our planet off its axis and left it spinning at an angle of twenty-three and a half degrees with respect to the Sun. It’s this angle to the sun that makes our planet what’s known as the Lucky Planet with its incredible geology and habitats. The story of Planet Earth is the story of the relationship between our planet and the sun.
Their goal is the beautiful Okavango swamps that flood with life-giving water each year. This epic journey presents a huge challenge for young elephants. They encounter dust storms which are blinding and sadly result in one young elephant thinking it’s following its mother but unfortunately walking in the opposite direction. The rest of the herd join a vast array of other animals in the search for fresh water. When they finally arrive, you’ve never seen a happier elephant. The Snow Leopard
The sun creates the seasons and the conditions for life. New life in the arctic, the Antarctic and the deciduous forests are all a response to the sun’s warmth. The minute they’re born, the cubs and the chicks have to adapt immediately to the challenges of their habitat.
For natural history film makers, the Snow Leopard is the holy grail. And this elusive big cat has acquired a mythical status. Until recently nobody has succeeded in filming more that a few distant seconds of one of these beautiful animals. However, Planet Earth did manage to film these first intimate images in the Karakorum Mountains in Pakistan.
Gone Fishing!
The Cranes
60 percent of our planet is covered by the oceans, we really do live on a blue planet. This is a tribute to one of the most versatile and intelligent of all the ocean’s inhabitants, everyone’s favourites, the dolphins.
The annual seasonal changes created by the Earth’s tilt to the sun mean that much of our world undergoes dramatic changes through the year and for many animals this means they have no choice but move on.
The sequence shows them first of all surfing to catch fish then aquaplaning in a shallow river to catch fish, and thirdly rounding up an open ocean bait ball — a great favour to a flock of hungry shearwaters.
Millions of animals migrate thousands of miles each year and probably the most demanding and dramatic of all these migrations is undertaken by demoiselle cranes. Each year, 50,000 cranes have to cross over the Himalayas in a 2,000-mile migration from central Asia to their wintering grounds in India.
First Steps
Journey to the Okavango
Although the tropical parts of our planet do not experience the seasonal change we enjoy here in temperate North America, they do have wet and dry seasons every year. In Botswana, the annual dry season forces thousands of elephants to undertake an epic trek 20 Encore Atlanta
They can be driven back by the weather and their young are frequently prey for Golden Eagles. If they manage to make the ascent, the lack of oxygen makes each wing beat a Herculean task. It’s one of the greatest migration stories in the natural world.

Wish You Were Here! (Nice Work if You Can Get It)
The unsung heroes of wildlife filmmaking are the teams behind the cameras that go to extraordinary lengths to bring back the wonderful images we enjoy. For Planet Earth they spent a record 2,000 days in the field at over 200 locations worldwide, in 64 countries on every one of the continents.
Snow Geese
In the summer the arctic tundra is also the home millions of snow geese. They have travelled north from their wintering grounds down here in the states to breed. One single colony in Canada contains over half a million birds. And like the caribou these geese find they are not left undistributed by the local residents. The Hunter and The Hunted
The Seasons
Filming techniques have contributed greatly to our understanding of nature. The use of high-speed cameras, night-vision, and powerful lenses have all played their part in research. Timelapse photography is a slow process but not only does it show us how things grow it also creates some stunning visual effects used here to display a range of flora and fauna from the deserts of Arizona to the deciduous forests of new England. Caves
The exploration of caves is highly dangerous whether parachuting into the Cave of the Swallows in Mexico or charting the underwater caves of the Yucatan. But the hidden world of caves is full of surprising and exotic creatures and also displays of amazing beauty, none more so than North America’s Lechuguilla which contains the worlds most spectacular gypsum crystals. The Caribou Migration
The longest of all the land migrations has to be that of the caribou. Each summer 3 million caribou head north across the tundra of Alaska and Canada in search of fresh grazing. Their round trips are almost 2,000 miles long and they travel together in vast herds, tens of thousands strong-but they do not journey alone.
22 Encore Atlanta
This begins with the piker and its nemesis the fox. Then we travel to Africa to witness predation sequences both on land and at sea. Perhaps the most powerful and dramatic relationships in nature are those between predators and their prey. For one it is all about a vital meal. For the other it is a matter of life or death. The Lucky Planet
Our concert this evening and the Planet Earth series have been a celebration of a beautiful planet. Although over six billion people now crowd our tiny Earth, there remains so much wilderness and natural beauty still to celebrate. And yet we only have to witness the recent disaster in the gulf to realise how very fragile our planet is and how dependent it is on us and what we do. Survival of our planet now is far more than just the survival of the wilderness and the extraordinary creatures it supports. Today it is about the preservation of a healthy planet for our own children and grandchildren. We need to recognize that family love should not just be about our own immediate family but extend to the whole globe. Together the global family has the power to preserve the lucky planet that we are privileged to call home.
