Phantom
haunts the Fox one last time By Kathy Janich

he road ends here for The Phantom of the Opera. Or, more accurately, the road here is ending for The Phantom of the Opera. This Fox Theatre sit-down is the sixth and final Southeastern hurrah for a Phantom touring company since 1991. When Andrew Lloyd Webber’s road warrior leaves town, it will visit Cleveland and Pittsburgh before heading to Los Angeles, where sometime in November, the masks, machinations and operatic trills will be mothballed for good. The music of the night still continues on Broadway, however. Well into its 22nd year — selling at 86 percent capacity — Phantom is easily the longest-running show in history. (Lloyd Webber’s Cats is a distant second, trailing by some 2,000 performances.) The tour has garnered impressive numbers as well. In all, there have been three national touring companies, affectionately dubbed “Christine,” “Raoul” and “Music Box” for the Broadway house the musical
calls home. Together they have grossed more than $1.5 billion and, by the time the Music Box troupe shutters in L.A., will have played a mind-bending 205 engagements in 98 cities for a total of 36 years and 14,605 performances. But, back to the beginning. The Phantom of the Opera, based on Frenchman Gaston Leroux’s serialized novel, opened on Broadway on Jan. 26, 1988. The show won seven Tony Awards (including Best Musical, Best Actor for Michael Crawford’s Phantom and Best Director for Harold Prince) in a season that also included Stephen Sondheim’s Into the Woods, the cult fave Chess and revivals of Anything Goes (with Patti LuPone), Cabaret (not the Alan Cumming version) and Dreamgirls. In its two-plus decades on Broadway, Phantom has seen 20 women warble as the heroine Christine Daaé, 16 men play the Phantom, and 21 women take on the role of the tempestuous prima donna Carlotta Guidicelli. Among those Carlottas is Kim Stengel, who appears here and is the Atlanta’s Performing Arts Publication 11

“one of the greatest moments in all of musical theater history.” As for her rituals? They happen out of sight and just as she takes her place during the overture, awaiting Carlotta’s first appearance she sings one note, the same note, every time. And just before the panic surrounding the discovery of Don Juan’s body, she jingles the medals worn by the fire inspector. longest-running Carlotta in the world, having performed the role over 5,000 times. She’s sung the part in Hong Kong and Singapore, in much of Canada, and in at least 47 of the 50 United States. Her Broadway turn came in March 2008, opposite Howard McGillin’s Phantom, and “must have gone very well,” she says, “because the woman I understudied never talked to me again.” Stengel eventually took over the role. Carlotta is the big cheese in a legitimate but small and struggling Paris opera company. She has worked very hard to become the reigning soprano, Stengel says, and isn’t willing to step aside for the timid, and in Carlotta’s view, far less talented Christine, despite the Phantom’s escalating threats. “Who is this little twit taking my job?” Stengel says, citing the diva’s point of view. As for Phantom’s staying power? Stengel says it’s a show that touches people and makes them want to see it again and again. “It’s an everyman story,” she explains. “And everyone seems to have some kind of emotional connection to a character.” Among Stengel’s favorite moments are the act two opening number “Masquerade,” when the company pauses on the stairs, turns slightly and climbs in unison to thrilling harmonies, and an earlier moment when shrouds are ripped from the proscenium, and what looked like an auction house is revealed as the Paris Opera. She calls it

rior to 1950, the state of Georgia had more than 350 historic theatres. Today, only 234 remain. The Fox Theatre Institute’s mission is to share the knowledge, wisdom, and experience of the Fox Theatre’s own challenging past and current successes with historic theatres around the state. “The [Atlanta Landmarks Inc.] Board came to me and said, now that we’re stable financially, it is time to share the wealth,” says Fox Theatre General Manager Allan Vella. “No other theater in the world has what we do — the Restoration Department. We’re going to share that. We’re going to pick theaters that want to renovate themselves, help them find grants and teach them how to do it. “We’ve already been doing it for years, by sharing advice and going to other theaters, but we recognized a need to formalize it,” Vella continues. “[The Fox Institute] will select theaters that are in a good position — they have a supportive community, etc. — so we’re not setting them up for failure.” For its pilot year, the Fox Institute selected 12 theaters and created a customized program for each. Some need assistance remodeling their lobby or auditorium. Some want to learn about sales and marketing, or need assistance with programming and ticket sales. Some want to train in-house restoration staff. The goal is to help the theaters become viable economic and cultural centers for the communities they’re in, much like the Fox Theatre has as it established itself as a cultural destination in Atlanta. The Fox is booked more than 325 nights a year. It regularly ranks among 16 EncoreAtlantA.com
the top-grossing theaters in the world. It also has been the catalyst for the revitalization of Midtown Atlanta, creating an audience not only for live theater but also for restaurants, bars, nightclubs and hotels. “The success of the Fox demonstrates the relevance of historic preservation,” Vella says. “With the money we make, we typically invest it in three ways. Every year, $1-$1.4 million dollars goes back into the building, we make donations to other theaters, and we have outreach programs. We’re a non-profit theater that makes money. We’ve been operating in the black for 30 years. If it wasn’t for Atlanta, we couldn’t do this.” Alan E. Thomas, board president of Atlanta Landmarks, Inc., says, “Everyone should know the value of the arts. In America, it means $166 billion and 6 million jobs. In Atlanta, it’s a $274 million industry and has an economic impact of more than $700 million.” Fox Institute theaters are poised to make a tremendous difference statewide. “Our desire is to use the gifts we were given to help other theaters around Georgia become economic engines within [their] communities,” Thomas says. GOLDEN RULES The following brief, but important article has been published to assist in audience etiquette. To this day we get at least one phone call a week asking for reprint rights. These calls and letters come from orchestras and theaters, opera and ballet companies all over the United States and Canada, big and little troupes alike. The message, telegraphed between the lines, seems to be an S.O.S.: American audiences are out of control. Are they? Here’s a refresher course. Please read on, and remember, part of one’s pact as an audience member is to take seriously the pleasure of others, a responsibility fulfilled by quietly attentive (or silently inattentive) and selfcontained behavior. After all, you can be as demonstrative as you want during bows and curtain calls. 1. Go easy with the atomizer; many people are highly allergic to perfume and cologne. 2. If you bring a child, make sure etiquette is part of the experience. Children love learning new things. 3. Unwrap all candies and cough drops before the curtain goes up or the concert begins. 4. Make sure cell phones, beepers, and watch alarms are OFF. And don't jangle the bangles. 5. The overture is part of the performance. Please cease talking at this point. 6. Note to lovebirds: When you lean your heads together, you block the view of the person behind you. Leaning forward also blocks the view. 7. THOU SHALT NOT TALK, or hum, or sing along, or beat time with a body part. 8. Force yourself to wait for a pause or intermission before rifling through a purse, backpack or shopping bag. 9. Yes, the parking lot gets busy and public transportation is tricky, but leaving while the show is in progress is discourteous. 10. Honor the old standby: Do unto others, as you would have them do unto you.

Tried-and-true activities to keep the kids busy this summer By Suzanne Wright
A
aah, summer … it starts off so promising. About two weeks into the stickiest season, a chorus of whining begins — “I’m bored,” and “there’s nothing to do!” — and continues on an incessant loop until school is back in session. And, let’s face it, with a seemingly endless stream of admission fees into popular local attractions, summer can be expensive. So, we’ve scoured the market for family friendly, fun and free (or nearly free) ideas that will keep your kids happy and your wallet intact. Scouting for treasure

Oh, my aching back! Finding relief from back pain By John J. Moss, M.D., medical director, northside hospital spine center ost people will experience back pain at some time in their life — about 80 percent, in fact. It’s no wonder, considering the complexity of the spine. Between the vertebrae, discs, joints, ligaments and nerves, there’s plenty that can go wrong. Symptoms can range from mild discomfort to severe pain and spasms. However, when treated appropriately, most pain is self-limited, with no longterm effects. In about 90 percent of cases, it goes away after four to six weeks. But the best approach to managing back pain is prevention. It’s the key to just about every other disease and ailment and back pain is no exception. 46 EncoreAtlantA.com
Preventing back pain
Consider any type of physical activity you do as an athletic event. Are you going to plant trees, take up tennis or clean the attic? Each of these activities can cause significant physical stress and strain. By incorporating daily stretching and back-sparing techniques into your normal routine, you can help to prevent trouble. In case of injury
Evaluate your symptoms. Ice is best for new injuries, while heat is good for persistent injuries. Over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medications can help, but be sure to check with your

not written yet, that fits me like a glove and wins me a Tony,” she says in an affable way. Failing that, she’d happily play Margaret Johnson, the mother in Adam Guettel’s The Light in the Piazza. . The story of the mysterious, disfigured musical genius gets a second act in Lloyd Webber’s newest musical, Love Never Dies, a sequel set in Coney Island. It opened in in London this past March to mixed/negative reviews, with plans for a Broadway bow at the Neil Simon Theatre in April 2011
and has already faced delays, Lloyd Webber’s tussle with prostate cancer among them. Love Never Dies brings back the Phantom, of course, along with Christine and Raoul but not the one-time diva of the Paris Opera. “They probably had problems,” Stengel suggests tongue-in-cheek, “because they took Carlotta out.” Kathy Janich is an Atlanta theater artist and freelance writer. After years in daily newspapers, she’s found a joyous second career as an artistic associate, primarily at the smart, gutsy and bold Synchronicity Theatre.

Atlanta restaurant week turns 4 For the fourth year in a row, Downtown Atlanta Restaurant Week (July 26 –Aug. 9) will showcase 26 of the city’s finest dining establishments. The week, actually two weeks this year, is chockfull of deals — three-course dinners for $25/$35 per person — at downtown restaurants such as Legal Sea Foods, 30 Tables, Avanzare, BLT Steak, Meehan’s Public House, Thrive, No Mas! Cantina, and more. In addition to food, there will be plenty of music and entertainment. — Kathy Janich
Thrill of the hunt If you live for the perfect find, Lady & Sons Antiques in the Marietta Square should be on your radar. With the exception of a few items, shop owner Linda Kirby scouted the entire collection, which includes rare finds from the early 1800s and 1900s. The large shop is nicely stocked, yet not overcrowded, with vintage furniture and unique pieces such as sterling silver brush and mirror sets, dainty China, crystal lamps and Bugaboo baby carriages. — Ashley L. Brazzel find it: 404-983-2504; 85 Church St., Marietta.

Arts beckons you to the Beltline The first-ever public art exhibition along Atlanta’s Beltline corridor hits the rails, this summer. A mix of performances and installations can be seen now through October along eight miles of the Beltline, an emerging system of parks, trails, transit and other development that is trying to reclaim a somewhat dilapidated 22-mile loop of historic railway around the city. The events, mostly on weekends, include visual artists, musicians and dancers. To see them, you’ll need to walk or bicycle to the sites. — Kathy Janich details: beltline.org. 60 EncoreAtlantA.com

Experience Your Life in the Dark “For about an hour, visitors navigate different environments in complete darkness, relying on all senses except sight, and ask questions of their visually impaired guide, whose faces they don’t see until leaving. Stumbling in darkness makes the Dialog visitor appreciate how visually oriented the world is - how would you go grocery shopping? How would you cross the street? - as well as the reliance on other senses such as sound and touch to navigate the world.”

At Saint Joseph’s Hospital, we know that there’s more to our patients than just being patients. So our compassionate approach considers not just your body, but your whole life. This has driven us to pioneer less-invasive technology, to go from research to cure faster, and to lead in multiple specialties. Which may be why we’ve won more top national awards than any other Atlanta hospital. Nobody chooses to be a patient, but at the hospital where compassion has driven 130 years of innovation, you don’t have to feel like one either.
