‘LOVE IS A UNIVERSAL LANGUAGE’ STU JAMES
HOMETOWN: Atlanta, Ga.
“I play the role of Harpo in the show. He is the husband to Sophia, stepson to Celie. Alice Walker calls him the ‘new’ man, the Renaissance man of the show. He decides to break the cycle of abuse. “They call The Color Purple ‘the musical about love’ because there’s so many facets of love depicted in this production. The musical takes you on an amazing emotional ride from happiness and joy to anger and frustration to peace and love. I think what’s also awesome is 6 ENCORE ATLANTA
the redemptive quality for the men. In the musical, like in real life, when we know better, we do better. “My favorite part is a song in Act II, ‘Any Little Thing’ – the Harpo and Sophia love song. They’re later in their lives. Their relationship is based off that fire thing – fighting that leads them into their passionate moment. It deals with them being older and still having that fire, that desire for each other, no matter what. “I’m really excited about [the show] and hope the city of Atlanta is open to the message that Alice Walker put in The Color Purple: That love is a universal language, and no matter who you are, everyone deserves love.”

A Lifetime of Care
After Maxine’s sister Beverly died from cancer, she and her other sister decided to undergo genetic testing at Northside Hospital to determine their risk of developing breast or ovarian cancer. Maxine’s results came back positive. With that knowledge, she was able to catch her breast cancer early. Now she’s healthy and back on track with her life. You may know Northside as the place for babies, but the hospital also is a leader in diagnosing hereditary cancer.

“I am the standby for Celie and Nettie. If either of the actors playing the roles are sick or need to take some time off, I go on for them. “I had to go on the night before the opening [of the national tour] because Celie got sick. I don’t remember a lot of it because the adrenaline was going. My parents were able to see me in the starring role; they had come up for the opening. “The show was pretty amazing because during Celie’s big 11 o’clock number,
the mic went out. The sound guys were telling me to come off the stage, but I didn’t want to leave. I was able to get to them during the instrumental break, and they were standing right in the wings to pin a new mic on my head. But the mic didn’t stay on my head; I ended up having to hold it. The audience loved it. I knew I couldn’t stop the show. It was just a wonderful experience. “Mr. Gerald Ray Horne – he taught at Northside High School – he’s the reason I’m in this business. Mr. Horne always instilled in everyone in class that you’re as good as you let yourself be. Don’t think because you have a raw talent, you don’t have to study.” Continued on page 38

THE COLOR PURPLE
COMES HOME
By Kristi Casey Sanders usan Booth, the Alliance Theatre’s artistic director, traveled to New York in 2005 for the Broadway premiere of The Color Purple, which had its workshop and world premiere at her theater the year before. “I had this great experience,” Booth says. “This woman – who will go nameless – was there from Atlanta. In the lobby, she caught up with me and said, ‘We have to bring this to Atlanta!’ “I don’t know if she didn’t know it already had been in Atlanta, or if she forgot. But I think what elicited the comment was in watching the show, she thought … ‘what a perfect show for Atlanta.’ What made it perfect for the Alliance was still at the heart of what you saw in the Broadway show.” What remains at the heart of The Color Purple is a story about love and home that gives its characters a chance to redeem themselves. “We love redemptive stories of love and home in Atlanta,” Booth says. “We talk about finding plays that start at the heart and travel to the head – that’s an Atlanta play. The theater has developed a strong, growing identity as a breeding ground for major new musicals. Each project renders the organization better equipped and better known for the next one. Now artists [think of the Alliance] as a safe, nurturing and courageous place for new work.” For more information, visit: alliancetheatre.org.

Profiles
Dr. Harold Brody Subscriber since 1978
Dr. Brody is an acclaimed dermatologist and dermasurgeon, with strong ties to theater. He studied theater at Duke University, has acted locally and regionally, and has produced both equity and non-equity productions in Atlanta. How did you become interested in theater? I’ve been interested in theater since I was a young boy. I was influenced by my parents taking me to a little theater in the small South Carolina town where I grew up. I moved to Atlanta in 1975 and started seeing as many plays as I could, and became a subscriber to Theater of the Stars in 1978. Then, I worked at Grady and TOTS was close to me, producing at the Women’s Club. I remember seeing Tammy Grimes there. I also went to work at Onstage Theatre to become more hands-on. I was on the board there, as well. We put all of our shows on from scratch. I interned in Houston and enjoyed performances at Theater Under the Stars there. We have a close relationship with Theater Under the Stars. The company began to use that name once our company moved from Chastain Park to indoors. John Breckenridge of Theater Under the Stars serves on our Board of Trustees. I didn’t know that. I also enjoyed seeing a lot of work at The Alley Theatre in Houston. Because of my interest in theater as a child, I studied as much of it as I could in college. Now, I serve on the Advisory Board of the Theater Studies Department at Duke University. What are your favorite musicals? I’m very partial to Cole Porter, so Anything Goes is my absolute favorite. I enjoy any Cole Porter musical. What would you tell someone about Theater of the Stars if they have never seen one of our productions? I would say this is the professional musical theater arm of Atlanta, and if they want to see great traveling or locally produced old and new work, then Theater of the Stars is the place. We are lucky to have it – many cities don’t. Theater of the Stars provides a balanced season, and I’m banking that most who are interested in musical theater will always want to see at least four out of the six shows in the main season. I look as the subscription series as a gate. You don’t have to pass through all of the doors and see every show to enjoy participating. It is to your advantage to subscribe. What is one thing people might not know about you? When people see me in a white coat as a doctor, they have no idea I have a dual passion for both theater and medicine. I’ve been active in theater for years. Many people in medicine have a passion for music, often playing an instrument, but it is unusual to find those in medicine who are interested in the production of theater, because it is a time consuming commitment to participate in it and go see it regularly. Is there anything you would like to include in this interview that we haven’t covered? I would probably say that those who love theater and are not in the Star Circle should join. For those who see theater as the “star” of their cultural activities, they will enjoy becoming a part of supporting Theater of the Stars.

Ingrid Saunders Jones
Theater of the Stars Board Member Ingrid Saunders Jones is the Senior Vice President for Global Community Connections with the Coca-Cola Company. As chair of the Coca-Cola Foundation, she leads the Company’s philanthropic commitment to sustainable communities. Under her leadership, the Foundation has contributed more than $225 million to education and other community initiatives. Ingrid Saunders Jones is a member on the Board of Trustees of Theater the Stars. How did you become involved with Theater of the Stars? I became acquainted with Theater of the Stars in the late ’70s through Just Us Theatre, and involved with the Theater in the mid 1990s when I served on a community task force about the future of the National Black Arts Festival with Chris Manos, founder of Theater of the Stars; Shirley Franklin, who at the time was a community organizer; Nancy Boxill of the Fulton County Commission and Curley Dossman of Georgia Pacific. I was moved by Chris’ passion for theater and the work he had done for more than three decades to bring the best on Broadway to Atlanta. His voice was very insightful and helped us strategically lay out a plan for the National Black Arts Festival, which this month will celebrate its 20th anniversary. What are your favorite musicals? I couldn’t possibly name them all but those that come to mind first are: West Side Story, Bubbling Brown Sugar, Dream Girls, The Phantom of the Opera, A Chorus Line, Les Miserables, The Lion King and The Color Purple. What is it about theater that speaks to you? I think it’s the passion demonstrated by the actors and how they work to genuinely connect with the hearts and minds of everyone in the audience -- no matter the age. Theater also represents the culture of our time. What would you tell someone about Theater of the Stars if they have never seen one of our productions before? Theater of the Stars offers ‘the’ best productions available to present to Atlantans. Its contribution to the metro Atlanta cultural scene has been immeasurable. What is one thing people might not know about you? Most people don’t know I’m a former school teacher. I taught fifth graders. As a grade school teacher, I watched how theater captivated my young students ... and how the exposure was a life-changing experience for many of them.

Putting Atlanta youth on the right path
I
n Atlanta, less than half of all innercity students graduate high school. Throughout America, barely half of the students in the 50 biggest cities graduate, with 1.2 million students dropping out of school every year. The National Center for Policy Analysis estimates each dropout will cost his or her state $4,168 every year for the rest of their lives in increased Medicaid costs, incarceration costs and loss of tax revenue. Ironically, the best solution cities have discovered is something that’s being eliminated from many public schools: arts education. Since enrolling at-risk pre-teens in a dance, singing and creative writing camp called STARS, 34 Encore Atlanta
the city of Fort Myers, Fla., has seen a 27 percent drop in juvenile crime. Adding an aggressive arts education program to its curriculum has doubled the graduation rate of the “last chance” students enrolled at the Ulster-BOCES Alternative School in Tillson, N.Y. In Atlanta, the Fox Theatre has begun offering AileyCamp, a summer dance camp for at-risk youth, aged 11-14. The four-week program, based on a curriculum developed by the Alvin Ailey Dance Foundation, teaches young adults discipline, cooperation and perseverance through dance, music, art, creative communications and personal development workshops. This is AileyCamp’s second year in Atlanta.

“The benefits of the program [exist] because there is no prior dance training; it is used as a vehicle for developing their creative self-expression.” The program requires discipline and focus – skills children also need to succeed academically – and encourages critical thinking. By encouraging participants to express themselves and validating their creativity, AileyCamp helps build campers’ self-esteem. Creative writing classes help them catch up to grade-level in skills they may lack. Visual art classes create another safe environment in which the young adults learn to 36 Encore Atlanta
express themselves and work together. Because AileyCamp students often are exposed to drugs, violence, alcohol and sex where they live, role-playing sessions during camp address those issues and show campers what the consequences of the decisions they make might be. “It’s a crucial time in a preteen’s life, and decision-making is taking sway,” Sales explains. “AileyCamp is there to be a support system for those decisions and helps them be more independent. This program lets them realize that … any decision they make now will affect them for the rest of their life. Ultimately, it’s their decision to take that [good] path or not, but as long as I know we’ve directed them that way, that’s fulfilling.” Sales stays in touch with AileyCamp participants throughout the school year to follow their progress and offer support. This summer, she got to work with eight returning campers. “I definitely saw a big change,” she says. “One lady was not confident with her shoe size last year. It was embarrassing, for her, to be a size 12 or 13. This year she was so confident. Once you have the support of someone to let you know that it’s OK to be who you are … it makes a big difference for a teenager.” For more information about the AileyCamp program, or to sponsor a child, visit foxtheatre.org/outreach1_campAiley.htm, or call Sarah duBignon 404-881-2087.
Jamie Vosmeier
Each child accepted into the program is given a full scholarship, underwritten by the Fox Theatre. They apply through local Boys and Girls clubs, middle schools and the Fox Theatre Web site, and are interviewed one-onone by Sarah duBignon, Fox Theatre’s outreach director, and Diane Sales, the director of Atlanta’s AileyCamp. “What we’re looking for is someone who has some academic, or social or domestic challenges; someone who has not been exposed to the arts,” Sales says.

HOMETOWN: Warner Robbins, Ga.
“I’m in the ensemble, so I’m in the group scenes, and I cover a number of people: Shug, all three church ladies and the church soloist. You never know which role you’re going to see me in. “LaTonya Holmes and I grew up together. Sometimes Celie is out and Shug is out, and I’m [onstage] opposite LaTonya. We have such a deep relationship, it brings so much more to it. The other people in the cast have come up and said to us, ‘When
the two of you are on together, it’s such a unique chemistry.’ “My favorite part? One is when Shug Avery sings [‘Too Beautiful for Words’] to Celie, because it’s the beginning of her journey of discovery to find out who she is. She has never been loved in the way Celie loves her, and it stops her in her tracks. The other is when Celie sings ‘I Am Here.’ Shug and Celie have a fight and … Celie says, ‘I can let go of Shug because I’ve discovered who I am.’ You can’t really love anybody else until you love yourself and understand your personal worth. Then you really can contribute to someone else, because you are whole.” – As told to Kristi Casey Sanders

GOLDEN RULES The following brief, but important article has been published to assist in audience etiquette. To this day we get at least one phone call a week asking for reprint rights. These calls and letters come from orchestras and theaters, opera and ballet companies all over the United States and Canada, big and little troupes alike. The message, telegraphed between the lines, seems to be an S.O.S.: American audiences are out of control. Are they? Here’s a refresher course. Please read on, and remember, part of one’s pact as an audience member is to take seriously the pleasure of others, a responsibility fulfilled by quietly attentive (or silently inattentive) and selfcontained behavior. After all, you can be as demonstrative as you want during bows and curtain calls. 1. Go easy with the atomizer; many people are highly allergic to perfume and cologne. 2. If you bring a child, make sure etiquette is part of the experience. Children love learning new things. 3. Unwrap all candies and cough drops before the curtain goes up or the concert begins. 4. Make sure cell phones, beepers, and watch alarms are OFF. And don't jangle the bangles. 5. The overture is part of the performance. Please cease talking at this point. 6. Note to lovebirds: When you lean your heads together, you block the view of the person behind you. Leaning forward also blocks the view. 7. THOU SHALT NOT TALK, or hum, or sing along, or beat time with a body part. 8. Force yourself to wait for a pause or intermission before rifling through a purse, backpack or shopping bag. 9. Yes, the parking lot gets busy and public transportation is tricky, but leaving while the show is in progress is discourteous. 10. Honor the old standby: Do unto others, as you would have them do unto you. 44 Encore Atlanta
