How Constantine Maroulis broke the ‘American Idol’ mold By Bret Love
C
onstantine Maroulis, the star of Rock Of Ages, will be the second former “American Idol” contestant to pass through Atlanta in a month (his season-four castmate Anthony Fedorov starred in June’s Joseph & the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat). But what some “Idol” fans may not know is that Maroulis was a musical theater fanatic long before the TV show made him a household name. Born in 1975 to Greek-American parents, Maroulis grew up in New Jersey, and went to college at the prestigious Boston Conservatory, where he got his BFA in Musical Theatre. “Although ‘American Idol’ was an amazing experience, I did exist before my time on the show,” he laughs. “In 1998 I was granted admittance to the Boston Conservatory, where I studied script and score, private voice lessons, piano, dance,
stagecraft [and] Shakespeare. It was a great time in my life.” Maroulis describes himself as a huge “theater geek,” but music always was a big part of his life. His parents exposed him to classic crooners like Nat King Cole and Frank Sinatra. His brother turned him on to rock ’n’ roll icons like The Doors and Led Zeppelin. His sister loved New Wave acts such as The Cure and Echo & the Bunnymen. While he was immersing himself in theater, Maroulis also was singing in bands, balancing dreams of being a rock star and a Broadway hoofer in equal measure. He got to do both with his big break as an actor, playing Roger in the national touring production of Rent. Maroulis had just returned from a year on the road when his thengirlfriend talked him into auditioning for “Idol.” Maroulis was one of the first Atlanta’s Performing Arts Publication 9

with the character, from their passion for music and heart-on-their-sleeve approach to relationships to their relentless pursuit of their dreams. For Maroulis, who earned a Tony Award nomination for his performance, getting to sing the music of Journey and Bon Jovi in a Broadway show is a lifelong dream come true. “There might not ever be a part that fits me so well ever again in my career,” he admits. “I grew up singing in bands and doing theatre. I put on mini-Bon Jovi concerts in my room as a kid. Now I get to do it every night in front of a couple thousand people. Rock Of Ages has been a true blessing.” Rock of Ages rolls into the Fox Theatre July 5-10. Bret Love is the founder of ecotourism/ conservation site GreenGlobalTravel.com; the national managing editor of INsite magazine; and music editor for Georgia Music Magazine. He freelances for many national and international publications, and performs on numerous improv teams with Jackpie at Relapse Theatre.

contestants to benefit from the show’s recent change to its age range cut-off (from 16-24 to 16-28) and, along with Bo Bice, he was one of the first to bring a rock edge to a show typically steeped in pop, R&B and country. Maroulis made it to the Top 6 before being eliminated, but the exposure provided by the show and subsequent sold out tour inevitably changed his career for the better. “‘Idol’ is a great ‘boot camp’ for performers,” he insists. “What better training is there than getting thrown out in front of over 30 million people live on TV? After ‘Idol’ I had tons of projects pitched to me [including singing with legendary rock band Queen]. I knew I wanted to do Broadway, and my featured supporting role in The Wedding Singer was a great way to get introduced to the scene again.” While The Wedding Singer may have introduced Maroulis to Broadway, it was his leading role as Drew in Rock Of Ages that made him a star. The 35-year-old performer admits he has a lot in common

magine how magical it would be if you could relive the experience that helped you discover what you wanted to do with your life. Tom Alan Robbins, who stars as Tevya in the Theater of the Stars production of Fiddler on the Roof, is doing just that. Robbins first played Tevye in a 1971 Canton, Ohio, high school production, and it inspired him to become a professional actor. Since then, he has played a variety of characters, ranging from Pumbaa in the Broadway production of The Lion King to Thenarier in the First National Tour of Les Misèrables. But this is the first time in 40 years that he’s been able to step back into Tevye’s shoes. “I’ve been waiting for this to come around again,” says Robbins. “This is one of the greatest scores ever produced.”

Dear Patrons, Subscribers and Friends: Welcome to the third show of our 2011 season, Fiddler on the Roof. Here we will visit the little village of Anatevka as Tevye, a poor dairyman, tries to instill in his daughters the traditions of his tight-knit Jewish community. In the face of changing social mores and the growing anti-Semitism of Czarist Russia, we are brought into a world of wonderful characters, rich historical and ethnic detail, and beautiful music. This show brings out the human emotion in all of us. It beguiles its audiences with its honesty, warmth, humor and applicable life lessons. Its theme of tradition cuts across barriers of race, class, nationality and religion. Fiddler on the Roof continues to touch you even after you’ve left the theatre. With a host of wonderful songs including “Matchmaker,” “If I Were a Rich Man,” “Sunrise, Sunset” and “Do You Love Me?” it gives me great pleasure to welcome this show to our stage. We hope you will enjoy this musical as much as we enjoyed producing it. Once again, I’d like to thank you for your support of our not-for-profit theater company. We have three more shows in our season and are looking forward to them. Our fourth show includes the legendary music of Frank Sinatra and the creative vision of Tony Award-winning choreographer Twyla Tharp in Come Fly Away (Aug. 2–7). We continue with the unforgettable oddball romantic comedy, Guys and Dolls (Aug. 16-21) and conclude with the popular favorite, Annie (Jan. 14-22, 2012). We plan to cast most of the roles for Annie with local actors — it will be a great production. We hope you are looking forward to the remainder of the season.

Authors
JOSEPH STEIN (Book) started his career in television and was one of a noted group of writers on “Your Show of Shows” and “The Sid Caesar Show.” His first work for the theater was as co-author of Plain and Fancy, the hit musical about the adventures of a pair of sophisticated New Yorkers living among the Amish in Pennsylvania. His next show was Mr. Wonderful, starring Sammy Davis Jr. He created the libretto for the Bock and Harnick musical The Body Beautiful. His next librettos were for Take Me Along, based on Eugene 26 EncoreAtlantA.com
O’Neill’s Ah, Wilderness, and Juno, with a score by Marc Blitzstein. He then wrote the adaptation for the hit stage comedy Enter Laughing. Fiddler on the Roof was his next show, for which he won the Tony as well as the Drama Critics’ Circle Award. He was also Tony-nominated for his next show, Zorba, with a score by Kander and Ebb. His other productions include King of Hearts, Irene, Rags (for which he Tony-nominated), and The Baker’s Wife, which was produced in London and was nominated for the Laurence Olivier Award. Mr. Stein is also the author of the screenplays for Enter Laughing and Fiddler on the Roof. JERRY BOCK (Music) was born in New Haven, Conn., on Nov. 23, 1928. Bock and Sheldon Harnick’s celebrated collaboration yielded five scores in seven years. The Body Beautiful; Fiorello! (winner of Broadway’s triple crown: Tony Award, New York Critics’ Circle Award and the Pulitzer Prize in drama, the fourth musical to do so); Tenderloin; She Loves Me (winner of Variety’s poll of critics as best musical, citing Bock and Harnick as best composer and lyricist); Fiddler on the Roof (nine Tonys, notably the citation for best musical of the year); The Apple Tree; and The Rothschilds. In addition to the 1989 silver anniversary production of Fiddler (from which a major excerpt was featured in Jerome Robbins’ Broadway), a highly esteemed revival of The Rothschilds enjoyed a successful run off-Broadway the following year. Since then, Bock and Harnick were triply honored by being inducted into the Theater Hall of Fame, receiving the Johnny Mercer Award from the Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Spirit of American Creativity Award from the Foundation for a Creative America. But the “award” that Bock holds near and dear is the honorary doctor of humane letters degree from the University of Wisconsin. It was there that he met his wife, Patti, and it was there that he decided to be a composer. Mr. Bock is a member of a number of professional guilds and associations, among which the BMI Foundation is a membership he relishes. As for wife Patti, son George and daughter Portia, Bock confesses they are his longest-running hit. SHELDON HARNICK (Lyrics) Born and raised in Chicago, Sheldon Harnick began studying the violin while in grammar school. After serving in the Army for three years, he enrolled in the Northwestern University School
bios of Music, and earned a bachelor of music degree in 1949. Though his focus had been the violin, Harnick also developed skills as a writer of comedy sketches, songs and parody lyrics, and eventually decided to try his luck as a theatrical lyricist in New York City. Harnick joined with composer Jerry Bock to write their own musicals. While the first Bock and Harnick musical, The Body Beautiful in 1958 showed promise, it was their second musical, Fiorello!, in 1959, that put the team on the map. Their musical biography of New York City’s legendary mayor earned the Tony Award, Pulitzer Prize and New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award. In 1964, Bock and Harnick, working with director-choreographer Jerome Robbins and book writer Joseph Stein, created a musical masterpiece that vividly evoked a vanished community while telling a story with universal and timeless appeal. Fiddler on the Roof, based on a series of short stories by Jewish folklorist Sholom Alecheim, earned the Tony Award, New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award, a gold record (for both its Broadway cast album and film soundtrack recordings) and a platinum record (for the Broadway album). In 1971, with the Broadway production still running, United Artists released the film version starring Topol. The following year the stage production became the longest-running show in Broadway history, a record it held until 1979. Sheldon Harnick is a member of the Dramatists Guild and the Songwriters Guild of America. In addition to his Tonys, Pulitzer and Grammys, his many other honors include the Johnny Mercer Award from the Songwriters Hall of Fame, the Marc Blizstein Memorial Award for achievement in the creation of opera librettos, presented by the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters; and honorary doctorates of humane letters awarded by Illinois Wesleyan University, and Muskingum College. JEROME ROBBINS (Original Director/Choreographer) dancer, director, choreographer, producer, writer and conceptualizer, began his career in 1930 as a ballet dancer. With the ballet Fancy Free (1944), he became a major choreographic force. He created, directed and choreographed such dazzling musicals as Peter Pan, Pajama Game, Call Me Madam, On the Town, Billion Dollar Baby, High Button Shoes, Miss Liberty, The King and I, Wonderful Town, Bells Are Ringing and Gypsy. Tony Awards 28 EncoreAtlantA.com
include Fiddler on the Roof and West Side Story (for which he also won the Academy Award for his direction of the motion picture). In 1989, he directed the award-winning retrospective of his work, Jerome Robbins’ Broadway.

etiquette 1. Arrive early. If you are late, you may be held out or reseated until an appropriate time for you to get to your assigned seat. People who arrive late disturb the performers on stage and audience members. It is best to arrive about 30 minutes early so that you have time to purchase concessions, find your seat, and read the program before the show starts. 2. Take care of personal needs (drinks of water or restroom) because you should not leave your seat until the intermission or until the performance ends. 3. Please sit in the seat you are assigned so you do not cause confusion for other audience members. 4. Please silence or turn off all electronic devices, including cell phones, beepers, and watch alarms. You’ll be embarrassed if it goes off in the middle of a tense moment of the show and it will break the mood for everyone. We encourage you to share your experience at the Fox via social media, but please refrain from doing so or texting during performances; the glow from your device is distracting. 5. Most shows do not allow photography of any kind. Flash photography inside the theatre is never allowed as it is a distraction to those around you and a danger to the performers. 6. The overture is part of the performance. Please cease talking at this point. 7. The sound system for each show is provided by the touring production. Unfortunately, many variables exist that may occasionally hinder sound quality. Please let an usher know if you are having trouble hearing. Adjustments may be able to be made or an assisted listening device can be provided. 8. Dear Lovebirds, when you lean your heads together, you block the view of the people behind you. Please consider the people that will be seated behind you when choosing whether or not to wear a hat or what hair style you choose. 8. Please refrain from talking, humming, or singing along with the show, except when encouraged to do so by the artist or show. 9. Please wait for an appropriate moment to dig something out of your pocket or bag. 10. Go easy with the perfume and cologne, many people are highly allergic. 11. If you need assistance during the show, please go to your nearest volunteer usher. If additional assistance is needed the usher will get the appropriate person to further help you. 12. Yes, the parking lot gets busy and public transportation is tricky, but leaving while the show is in progress or before the actors have taken their final bows is discourteous. Wait until it is over and then exit with the rest of the audience. 13. Just be courteous and everyone will enjoy the show.

Fox fun facts: Save the Fox
On May 17, 1974, the Fox was put on the National Register of Historic Places. Buildings less than 50 years old are not meant to qualify, but because of the Fox’s “outstanding architectural merit,” it made the list. Here are some other fun facts: By the 1970s, the sheer size of the auditorium made it impossible to hold first-run films for the long time periods now required by distributors. In 1974, Southern Bell approached Mosque, Inc., who had owned the theatre since 1935, to buy and raze the theatre for its new headquarters. July 10, 1974: Possibly the first official Save the Fox meeting was held at Herren’s restaurant. Among those in attendance was future Mayor Maynard Jackson. December 31, 1974: To generate Save the Fox donations, Alex Cooley presented The Gregg Allman Tour. More than 4,000 people attended.
March 20, 1976: The Delta Zeta sorority hosted an “Evening at the Fox” and raised $70,000. May 26, 1976: The Fox was made a National Historic Landmark by the 48 EncoreAtlantA.com
U.S. Department of the Interior. By February 1978, the Fox’s mortgage was paid off, six months ahead of schedule, thanks to the contributions of over 7,000 generous citizens.

With memorable songs such as “If I Were A Rich Man,” the exuberant “Matchmaker, Matchmaker” and triumphant “Tradition,” audiences can’t help but tap their feet to Fiddler on the Roof’s tale of love and laughter, devotion and defiance, and changing traditions. A humble milkman from the Russian village of Anatevka, Tevye acts as the show’s narrator, engaging the audience with a story about daily Jewish country life in czarist Russia. The exuberance
with which his family and friends meet life’s little and extreme challenges is thought-provoking, touching and at times hilarious, leaving audiences on the edge of their seats throughout. “It’s a demanding role,” says Robbins. “Tevya never leaves the stage. This show is jam-packed.” Fiddler finds Tevya wrestling with the new ideas presented by a younger generation. When his daughters choose suitors who defy his idea of a proper match, Tevye comes to realize, through a series of incidents that are at once comic and bittersweet, that his children 50 EncoreAtlantA.com
need to be free to establish traditions of their own. The show also stars Susan Cella, who returns to the role of Golde after appearing opposite Theodore Bikel and Harvey Fierstein in the Broadway production. Cella and Robbins create one of the most poignant moments in the show as their characters struggle with the question, “Do You Love Me?” as the world around them rapidly changes. Since 1953, Theater of the Stars (TOTS) has produced or presented more than 700 productions in Atlanta, across the country, and around the world. Its stated mission is to produce and present the best of Broadway musicals. But TOTS Producer Christopher B. Manos and President Nicholas F. Manos have another mission they fulfill whenever possible: to introduce the love of musical theater to new generations of Atlantans. The cast of this Fiddler includes professional actors performing alongside 16 talented local children — one of whom may grow up and play Tevye or Golde someday. Fiddler on the Roof will celebrate life at the Fox Theatre from July 19 through July 24. Jeff Al-Mashat is a writer, speaker and fundraiser who has worked in Atlanta’s nonprofit community for the past 17 years.

very summer, Atlantans try their best to withstand 90-plus degree temperatures and off-the-chart humidity without wilting. When they can no longer stay cooped up with igloo-like air conditioning and find themselves outdoors watching the pavement undulate and steam, it’s under the shady refuge of patio umbrellas that they seek relief, frosty cocktails and tasty victuals. An abundance of patio options are scattered throughout the city’s ‘hoods, fit for the transient, the hometown-er, and those just stopping through.
Best People Watching
Einstein’s
This category got tricky, but just listing a couple wouldn’t do, so here’s a handful: Highland Bakery, P’cheen’s and Across the Street in the Old 4th Ward serve up people and patios along a stretch of Highland Avenue. P’cheen’s specializes in nightcaps and grilled savories while Highland Bakery is brunch-perfect and Across the Street serves fresh and tasty Tex-Mex. Peoplewatching is good any time of day. For more, ahem, creative pedestrian traffic, check out Midtown’s Einstein’s and Flying Biscuit restaurants.
Strip
Best Couples Spots
Most Family Friendly
If you’re a new mom or dad, finding “family friendly” restaurants are a high priority. East Atlanta is quite keen on catering to the baby stroller crowd, especially at Midway Pub, where even pooches can feel the love. Fellini’s Pizza on Ponce de Leon is easy on families, too, and it has a water fountain that’s like catnip for kids. 54 EncoreAtlantA.com
Best Night Views
When you want more from a patio beyond people and décor, nothing shines like the beauty of the city. Buckhead’s New York Prime puts diners in the catbird seat in its cozy nook across from Lenox Square Mall. Cafe Circa/The Reserve in Old 4th Ward is a homey tapas spot. In Midtown, Park Tavern overlooks Piedmont Park. Best Place To Be Seen
When you’ve got the look and need people to know it, you’ve got to flaunt it in Atlantic Station. Strike a pose (and score killer steak and sushi) at Strip. It’s huge, loud and crowded with hip carnivores. Twist, in Buckhead, caters
einstein’s/metrotainment cafes; strip/here to serve restaurants
Patio dining with a summer love should be romantic, intimate and surrounded by beautiful decor. Inman Park’s Fritti possesses all of the above: a quaint corner lot neighboring sister restaurant Sotto Sotto, enclosed or outside patio dining, soft ambience and music, and romantic cuisine fit for sharing … if your idea of romantic cuisine encompasses upscale pizza. 4th & Swift, named for its Old 4th Ward environs, serves more sophisticated cuisine, but is still handholding friendly.

Fat Matt’s Rib Shack
Best Nook and Cranny
Fontaine’s in Virginia-Highlands has a hidden gem: a tree-shaded back patio, perfectly nestled behind the restaurant row, far enough from the noisy bar to afford quiet conversation, but close enough to enjoy some of the city’s best seafood. Park’s Edge, an intimate Inman Park restaurant, is a chic stroll away and never overcrowded, as a cranny should be. Best Live/Music
In Ansley Park/Buckhead, Fat Matt’s Rib Shack serves BBQ and blues music to guests sitting on its picnic benchlined patio. Midtown’s Après Diem
boasts desserts and DJs, while East Atlanta’s The Earl offers brews and live alternative rock bands. Danielle Deadwyler is an Atlanta-based writer, actor and mother to a dancing machine. Read more of her stories at tinyurl.com/atldanielle.

the unicef experience E
very day, 22,000 children die of preventable causes. Things that we take for granted — clean water, abundant food, shelter, vaccines, schools — are a luxury for many kids in developing nations. To prove this point and teach Atlantans how they can help, the U.S. Fund for UNICEF set up an exhibit called The UNICEF Experience in the luxury wing of Lenox Square mall. The weeklong interactive display kicked off with a party on May 22. Over 200 members of the Atlanta community learned first-hand what children in developing countries face, got an insider view of UNICEF’s lifesaving work, and had the opportunity to make a difference — all without leaving Atlanta. All along the Georgia and Florida coast, sea turtles will be building nests at night in the sand. It’s fascinating to watch — but it’s best not to use traditional flashlights when sneaking a peek. Flashlights can scare mother turtles from nesting and distract hatchlings from getting safely to the sea. Environmentally conscious establishments have begun offering guests the use of Turtlesafe flashlights — personal, rechargeable red LED lights that let people watch sea turtles without disrupting or endangering them. — KCS Be safe: If your resort doesn’t have Turtlesafe flashlights on hand, they can be purchased from turtlesafeonline.com for $14.95.

The art of the bathroom “Waterdream: The Art of Bathroom Design,” which runs through Sept. 24 at the Museum of Design Atlanta (MODA), takes visitors on a stimulating journey through the art and history of bathroom design from the 19th century to present day. The exhibit explains how the bathroom evolved from a practical place dedicated to personal hygiene into a haven of peace, luxury and relaxation. Highlights of the exhibit include life-size models of what the “bathroom of the future” will look like, as imagined by design world luminaries like Phillippe Starck. —Loni Gibson EXPERIENCE THE DREAM: MODA, 1315 Peachtree St., 404-979-6455, museumofdesign.org 60 EncoreAtlantA.com
