Allan and his wife first got to know Northside during the birth of their grandchildren. Later, when Allan was diagnosed with prostate cancer, he researched treatment options and discovered that Northside is also a national leader in robotic prostatectomies. Two weeks later, he was completely healed, cancer-free and enjoying being a grandfather and husband again. You may know Northside as the place for babies, but the hospital is also the Georgia leader for prostate cancer treatment.

All grown up, Melissa Gilbert becomes ‘Ma’

By Kathy Janich

“All I have told is true, but it is not the whole truth.” — Laura Ingalls Wilder, 1937 Laura Ingalls Wilder was just a baby when her restless Pa moved the family from the big woods of Wisconsin to the little house on the Kansas prairie. It was 1867. The Civil War was just two years past. Ulysses S. Grant was in the White House. And, popular authors of the day included Mark Twain and Louisa May Alcott. In 1957, three days after her 90th birthday, Laura Ingalls Wilder, who has seen and done so much, died. We liked Ike then. Electricity, telephone lines and a growing number of TV sets lit up American homes. Cars, not covered wagons, putt-putted along the roadways. Folks were — and still are — reading her somewhat fictionalized accounts of pioneer life in the brutal, beautiful and untamed American frontier. More than 60 million copies of her nine-book Little House series have been sold in

more than 30 languages worldwide (not counting libraries, where I got mine). Melissa Gilbert was a 10-year-old California girl when she first put on Laura’s bonnet and mentally relocated to Walnut Grove, Minn., for the TV series based on Ingalls’ books. She was 20 when that run ended. Now 46, she’s circled back to the vehicle that made her a household name. In Little House on the Prairie: The Musical she plays Caroline “Ma” Ingalls, Half-Pint’s mother, a character in whom both fans of the TV show and fans of the Wilder books will see changes. Gilbert’s Ma is a bit bigger and bolder. The creative team, she says, wanted to imbue her with the spark that Gilbert showed in her decade as Laura. They knew what they were doing, Gilbert says, phoning during a free hour in Houston. This “Ma” is brave, Gilbert says. “She’s braver than I am. She’s contained. She’s strong. She’s fun. She’s kind. She’s fiery.” She’s still a central character, of course, but not the central character. The musical Atlanta’s Performing Arts Publication 9

tempo and details in scenes have grown and the characters have been fleshed out. She expects even more changes in the musical’s next life — they’re hoping for a limited run on Broadway — but says the Little House family already is grieving its inevitable breakup. The challenge, she says, “is keeping it all together from city to city.” Gilbert has fought some laryngitis (she cites constantly changing climates, eight shows a week and almost as many interviews). She missed shows in Spokane, Wash., when she needed back surgery and will again see a back surgeon when the tour ends in late June in Kansas City, Mo. She downplays every ache and pain and you can hear the smile in her voice as she reflects on this journey. Simply, she says, “I’ve been training for this my whole life.” Kathy Janich is an Atlanta theater artist and freelance writer. After years in daily newspapers, she’s found a joyous second career as an artistic associate, primarily at the smart, gutsy and bold Synchronicity Theatre.

is built around Laura from age 12 to 16, a span that roughly covers the events of the last four books in the series, from By the Shores of Silver Lake through These Happy Golden Years. It’s the time spent in De Smet, S.D., where the Ingalls family lived for many years and where Laura met Almanzo Wilder, the man she would marry. Gilbert has one solo number, “Wild Child,” sung in Act Two as Ma urges the maturing young woman (Laura) not to lose the vitality and tenacity that have been the hallmarks of her younger years. Gilbert, who began dancing at age two and has been singing on and off almost as long, says her favorite moment is a quiet one. She sits to the side of the stage and looks on as Pa sings, with Laura listening, about his love for unsettled lands in “The Prairie Moves.” Gilbert signed up for this musical buggy ride four years ago as the show prepped for its world premiere at the esteemed Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis. It has changed radically since then. All but two songs are new, she says. The pace,

America! Happy birthday

By Ashley L. Brazzel No city celebrates the Fourth of July quite like

Atlanta. So, wherever you are around town, there’s bound to be loads of food, fun and fireworks to enjoy. Here’s our short list of what’s happening and how you can be a part of. Start the day off right at the 41st annual Atlanta Journal-Constitution Peachtree Road Race, the world’s largest 10k competition. Cheer on more than 55,000 runners as they trek down Peachtree Road from Lenox Square mall to Piedmont Park. The race begins at 6:45 a.m. with the Shepherds Center wheelchair race; the foot race commences at 7 a.m., with most runners finishing around 9:30 a.m. Atlantatrackclub.org If you like being in the center of it all, Centennial Olympic Park is the place to be. Rain or shine, there will be an all-day celebration, including fireworks and a diverse entertainment lineup, spanning the park grounds and the adjacent World of Coca-Cola lawn. Bring your picnic baskets, and towels as your little ones are guaranteed to make a run for the Fountain of Rings. Centennialpark.com For the largest fireworks display in the Southeast, head to Lenox Square mall. In addition to the pyrotechnics, there will be plenty of vendors; kidfriendly fun and entertainment; musical 12 EncoreAtlantA.com

performances; a live telecast; and special guest appearances. Previous years’ guests have been Ashton Shepherd and Miss America. Lenoxsquare.com If you’re looking for a range of familycentric activity, head to the 42nd annual Fantastic Fourth Celebration at Stone Mountain Park, July 3-5. In addition to the choreographed lasershow and fireworks spectacular, regular attractions such as the paddle boat and SkyHike adventure course will be open. Grilling is allowed, just be sure to arrive early for a picnic spot as the park draws large crowds on holidays. Admission into the park is free, but parking is $10 per vehicle. Stonemountainpark.com/july4th Other Fourth of July celebrations around the metro area include: an Independence Day Parade in Downtown Atlanta on Peachtree Street; Roswell Town Square’s parade, carnival games and fireworks; Live music and fireworks in the Decatur Town Square; and fireworks after the Atlanta Braves game at Turner Field.

bios THE GUTHRIE THEATER opened on May 7, 1963, with a production of Hamlet directed by Sir Tyrone Guthrie, who founded the theater with Oliver Rea and Peter Zeisler. The Guthrie became a prototype for an important new kind of theater and symbolized for many the birth of the notfor-profit resident theater movement. While the Guthrie’s mission and artistic excellence have remained constant, much has changed over the past four decades. What began as a summer season of four productions supported by a minimal staff is now a complex organization employing more than 900 people per year. Under current Artistic Director Joe Dowling’s leadership, the Guthrie opened a new facility in June 2006 on the banks of the Mississippi River in Minneapolis. Designed by Jean Nouvel, this architectural gem houses three stages — its signature thrust stage, a proscenium stage for the intimate classics of this century and a studio theater for developing future artists. guthrietheater.org PAPER MILL PLAYHOUSE (Mark S. GOLDEN RULES The following brief, but important article has been published to assist in audience etiquette. To this day we get at least one phone call a week asking for reprint rights. These calls and letters come from orchestras and theaters, opera and ballet companies all over the United States and Canada, big and little troupes alike. The message, telegraphed between the lines, seems to be an S.O.S.: American audiences are out of control. Are they? Here’s a refresher course. Please read on, and remember, part of one’s pact as an audience member is to take seriously the pleasure of others, a responsibility fulfilled by quietly attentive (or silently inattentive) and selfcontained behavior. After all, you can be as demonstrative as you want during bows and curtain calls. 1. Go easy with the atomizer; many people are highly allergic to perfume and cologne. 2. If you bring a child, make sure etiquette is part of the experience. Children love learning new things. 3. Unwrap all candies and cough drops before the curtain goes up or the concert begins. 4. Make sure cell phones, beepers, and watch alarms are OFF. And don't jangle the bangles. 5. The overture is part of the performance. Please cease talking at this point. 6. Note to lovebirds: When you lean your heads together, you block the view of the person behind you. Leaning forward also blocks the view. 7. THOU SHALT NOT TALK, or hum, or sing along, or beat time with a body part. 8. Force yourself to wait for a pause or intermission before rifling through a purse, backpack or shopping bag. 9. Yes, the parking lot gets busy and public transportation is tricky, but leaving while the show is in progress is discourteous. 10. Honor the old standby: Do unto others, as you would have them do unto you.

Larry-Douglas Embury: The man behind Mighty Mo By Kristi Casey Sanders

I

Prior to his appointment as resident organist in 2001, Embury says Mighty Mo only was played for summer film series sing-alongs. Now, he says, “I open for the majority of the shows. ... I end 15 minutes before the show starts, so the orchestra has time to tune up, and I usually start when the house opens.” Embury prefers not to use a set list of songs for his concerts. Instead, he likes to spotlight music from upcoming shows and play audience favorites.

from a 1929 Ludwig drum kit, Zildjan crash cymbal and grand piano to carillon bells, a real marimba and a locomotive whistle. “They’re under wind pressure,” Embury explains. “So when I activate, say, the castanets, if you were in the chamber, you’d see the castanets look just like they were in a dancer’s hands, but they’re under wind pressure [which

“We have almost 2,500 volunteer ushers, and after nine years, [I’ve] got to know a lot of them. One likes to hear ‘Besame Mucho’ and one likes to have me play ‘Hello, Dolly!’ And I take suggestions from people who come by the rail [separating the organ from the audience]. One night a lady came by and [asked for] ‘Claire de Lune.’ It’s one of my favorites, so I played it next. I don’t have any agenda; it’s all about them.” One of the joys of what Embury calls “having the best job in the world” is getting to play such a rare, world-class instrument. “Mighty Mo has all the bells and whistles, and can handle any musical literature I throw at it, from Bach to boogie-woogie, rock ’n’ roll, Broadway, gospel, hymns, country-western and scores for ballet.” Part of what makes the instrument so flexible is that its keyboard and stops are connected to a whole gallery of musical instruments hidden behind the faux opera boxes on either side of the stage. Mighty Mo’s catalogue of sounds range

Keep in mind that Embury doesn’t only play the Fox or Mighty Mo. Among his illustrious credits are engagements as a pianist with the Desilu Orchestra (of “I Love Lucy” fame), assisting pianist/conductor José Iturbi and playing a command performance for Pope John Paul II (the Baldwin concert grand piano from that concert, emblazoned with the papal seal, now resides in Embury’s home). When he’s not at the Fox, Embury plays improvisational jazz, church organ, concert and cabaret piano at venues around town. If you’d like to engage him for a special event, e-mail him at larryd@duoarts.com.

makes them] ‘speak.’” Embury says that when he plays, he must think like an arranger, deciding whether and when to introduce brass instruments, strings, percussion and sound effects into the musical score of each song he plays. And he loves surprising the audience with songs they wouldn’t expect to hear from such an august instrument. For last year’s Coca-Cola Summer Film Festival, the Robert Downey Jr. movie Iron Man was scheduled, so Embury learned how to play the Ozzy Ozborne/Black Sabbath song “Iron Man” on the organ. “When I played it, the audience was up for grabs,” he laughs. “But that’s what it’s all about. We have an intergenerational audience — we have grandparents come to see the shows with their grandkids and everything in between.” Perhaps what Embury enjoys most is playing for the children who come to the Fox. “The first time I ever saw a theater organ was in the Orpheum Theatre in Vancouver ... when I was a little kid of five, and it really did something to me. So I think, ‘There’s a little Larry standing there,’ when I play and see their eyes as big as saucers. It’s exciting for adults to see that big behemoth [Mighty Mo] rising up out of the orchestra pit, so I know it must be exciting for little kids to see it.” If children (or adults) are interested in learning how to play the theater organ, Embury says there are two wonderful organizations with chapters in Atlanta they should contact: The American

Take the magic of Mighty Mo home with you Several of Organist in Residence Larry-Douglas Embury’s CDs are for sale at the Fox Theatre gift kiosk. Sonic Bloom ($20) is a deluxe CD/ DVD set that’s specially mastered for surroundsound home theaters and features a panorama of aural and visual delights. Celebrate the holidays with Larry, Carols and Mo ($15), which captures the spirit of the Fox’s annual free concerts for the citizens of Atlanta. And enjoy standards such as “Ain’t Misbehavin’” and “Moon River” on Mighty Mo and “All that Jazz” ($15), which also features “phantom of the Fox” Joe G. Patten, who almost single-handedly rescued the organ from neglect and spent most of his life restoring it. “He’s my mentor,” Embury says. For more information, visit foxtheatre.org or duoarts.com.

Theatre Organ Society (atos.org) and the American Guild of Organists (agohq. org). “[They] have scholarship programs for kids so they can ... study with teachers, so when I go to that great keyboard in the sky, there’ll be someone to come after me,” Embury chuckles. Giving Back Atlanta Metropolitan Publishing thinks globally, acts locally By Kristi Casey Sanders

eing a publisher of printed magazines like the one you’re holding in your hand, Atlanta Metropolitan Publishing (AMP) and its employees are very aware of paper, particularly its cost and impact on the environment. So it was only natural that the company would start looking at ways to reduce the amount used in the office and recycle the rest. In spring 2008, after running several articles about how to green meetings and events for Encore Atlanta’s sister publication Plan Your Meetings, the management team decided it was time to start operating more sustainably. “We wanted our company, because it’s small and family owned, to be able to walk the talk,” remembers Chief Administrative Officer Claudia Madigan. An internal “green team” was formed to brainstorm ways AMP could reduce, reuse and recycle materials. Over the next several months, the disposable plates, cups and silverware were replaced with reusable ones; the job of taking glass, paper, aluminum and tin to the recycling center was added to the list of kitchen

sign-up duties; and harsh cleansers were replaced with more eco-friendly options. In the first year, 230 gallons of plastic, glass and metals were diverted from landfill, thanks to the recycling initiative, as well as countless bins of office paper, cardboard and magazines. At the start of 2009, AMP’s management team proposed adopting both a local and a global charity to support on a more regular basis. Encore Atlanta Publisher Sherry White suggested UNICEF be the global charity of choice. “UNICEF has saved more children’s lives than any other humanitarian organization in the world, and that was my personal draw, being a mother,” White says. She joined the board of the charity, and AMP became advocates of the organization, both through exposure given in Encore Atlanta and donation stations, which they set up at all Plan Your Meetings events. “UNICEF has a Web site called Inspired Gifts (inspiredgifts.unicefusa. org), and it’s allowed us to really make a difference,” White says. “You may think,

lunch and clean up. Our employees were extremely proud of what they were doing and the seniors ... were fascinated that we came out and did that.” Going forward, Madigan says, she hopes to find at least one day of service activity for AMP employees to participate in each quarter. And the company continues to look for ways it can improve operations and minimize its environmental impact by partnering with like-minded small businesses. ‘With $200, what can you do?’ But for $257, [on the site] you can buy a school in a box that helps UNICEF set up a temporary school in times of emergency. For $28, you can buy polio vaccine; $67.79 buys water purification tablets that can purify 50,000 liters of water; and for $80, you can buy oral rehydration salts. Every day, approximately 3,500 children a day die of dehydration. That’s what I love about the Inspired Gifts Web site: You can spend money and truly see what its impact is.” With money raised at Plan Your Meetings events, AMP has been able to purchase multiple measles vaccinations (measles kill more than 600 children every day in developing nations) and support UNICEF’s relief work in Haiti. “It’s been perfect to be a part of a company that’s not only so supportive of my work on the UNICEF board, but is really doing something about it and figuring out how we can get all aspects of the company involved in how we help,” White says. For its local charity, Madigan proposed AMP adopt the Dorothy Benson Senior Center, which is around the corner from the company’s headquarters in Sandy Springs. “It fit into the lives of our employees because everyone can relate to a senior center; we all have grandparents,” she says. “They have recreational, educational and social programs. We participated in the St. Patrick’s Day luncheon this year and served up to 200 seniors. As a company, we signed up to do the set-up and decorating, serve

FELA!

The African Music Legend Comes Alive On Broadway By Bret Love

The experience is immersive from the moment you walk in. The infectious rhythms beckon even as your ticket is being taken. The musicians — the Afrobeat acolytes of NYC band Antibalas, who remain onstage for the show’s duration — build an insistent groove combining elements of funk, jazz, African pop and Afro-Cuban percussion. The Eugene O’Neill Theatre is lavishly decorated from top to bottom to look like the Shrine, the nightclub in Lagos, Nigeria, where Kuti held court 56 EncoreAtlantA.com

for much of the 1970s. Its walls are lined with masks, graffiti, iconographic portraits of Muhammad Ali and Malcolm X, and a massive painting of his beloved mother Funmilayo Anikulapo-Kuti, a feminist activist in Nigeria’s anti-colonial movement. We’re here to witness Fela’s final performance at the Shrine in the summer of 1978, six months after his mother’s tragic death at the hands of a government angered by Kuti’s outspoken rebellion. As the

hen Fela! garnered 11 Tony Award nominations on May 4, it came as a surprise to absolutely no one fortunate enough to see the musical on Broadway. Whether you’re a diehard fan of Nigerian music legend Fela Anikulapo-Kuti or a newbie who wouldn’t know Afrobeat (the distinctive genre he created) from Adam, the production, inspired by Kuti’s life, is so vibrantly potent, it’s virtually impossible not to fall under its spell.

the second half, leading to an emotional crescendo with the blunt force of a sucker punch to the kidneys. Publicists hinted that the production’s eventual tour will begin in Atlanta (which is also the former home of actress Saycon Sengbloh, who plays central love interest Sandra), but Fela! is one show you won’t want to miss on Broadway. See it now, before it wins a ton of Tonys and starts selling out months in advance. instrumental strains of Kuti’s classic “Gentleman” give way to the rousing opening number “Everything Scatter,” with legions of colorfully costumed singers dancing their way down the aisles, it immediately becomes clear that this no ordinary concert (or Broadway show, for that matter). Kuti has a lot on his mind, seamlessly weaving his life story and impassioned rants against the oppressive policies of Nigeria’s military dictatorship amongst some of the funkiest songs James Brown never wrote. But the show wisely avoids becoming too bogged down in politics, instead, allowing Fela (played by Kevin Mambo and former Atlanta resident Sahr Ngaujah, who earned a Tony nod for his dazzling performance) to enrapture the audience with his charismatic charm, humor and raw animal magnetism. Every element of the production is on point, from the book by Jim Lewis and Bill T. Jones (who also directed and choreographed) and Marina Draghici’s scenic and costume design to Lillias White’s Tony-nominated turn as Funmilayo and the band’s sizzling rendition of songs such as “Shakara” and “Zombie.” You may actually forget you’re at a Broadway show rather than a concert, as Fela leads you in call-and-response vocals, teaches you how to swivel your hips like his gyrating dancers and humorously chides latecomers. And unlike the norm, the dynamic energy of the show actually gains momentum in
