By Christine Born ive shows often move audiences to levels of exuberance that screen versions, no matter how well acted, rarely achieve. When Mamma Mia! the movie opens on the big screen this summer, some moviegoers may leave the theater humming the seductive, familiar tunes from the ’70s pop group ABBA that inspired the popular Broadway musical, but it’s doubtful they’ll be dancing out to the parking lot. Yet, whenever and wherever the hit live show plays, people wind up dancing in the aisles, singing and clapping along to the title song as well as to “Dancing Queen” – probably the best-known song among others like

“Money, Money, Money,” “S.O.S” and “Take a Chance on Me.” Say what you will about the music or the group behind it, this show is irresistibly catchy. “There are many musicals that are fantastic but really none that sets off to accomplish a task and does it so well, which is to make you happy,” says Michael Lindner, who plays Harry Bright, one of the three possible fathers of the bride (Colin Firth’s role in the movie). “I had never seen the show and was not that familiar with ABBA, but my parents loved it. I was shocked when I finally saw it. “It totally wins you over,” he says. “You go on the journey. You go to this Greek

Martin Kildare, John Hemphill and Michael Lindner in Mamma Mia!
On-screen pressure How much pressure does a stage actor feel when he or she is playing a role portrayed by a wellknown movie actor? We put that question to Michael Lindner, and asked him if he planned to see the movie version of Mamma Mia! “It’s a unique experience,” Lindner says. “We’re [the cast] actually all very excited about it. When you’re touring with a show like this, it is your life – and when you see the trailer for the movie and the other people doing it, you feel like you’re watching your life.” Watch the trailer yourself at: mammamiamovie. com/us/index.html

As performers, our goal is to entertain or enlighten or make people think or just to make people laugh for a while – they need that.” For those fans who have seen the show before (including those who return again and again), Lindner says the spirit is the same but they’ll find something fresh. “The principal actors are all new,” he explains. “We all came together at the same time.” The cast rehearsed together for four weeks, bonding before they took the show on the road. “It really created a new show; it’s very different from its predecessors.” As an example, Lindner says he never expected he’d be doing the show. “I never really thought there was a part for me. Physically, I’m different; I’m bigger and thicker around the middle. [Lindner resisted any comparison to Firth.] I was surprised, but the creative team really enjoyed the work I did for the audition and found a way to incorporate me into the cast. They were open to little changes.” The cast shares another experience that may contribute to their version

Norb Joerder, director of Theater of the Stars’ (TOTS) production of Oklahoma!, wants audiences to experience the show as if it were the first time. The audience will see Agnes de Mille’s original Broadway choreography, set on the dancers by choreographer Gemze de Lappe, a de Mille protégé. “We’re striving to go back to that original production, but with a new, young cast who’s probably never done this older version.” Joerder, it turns out, is a de Lappe protégé. The two met when the young Joerder was cast in a production of Oklahoma! at the Municipal Opera Association of St. Louis, where Joerder had spent every summer since the age of seven doing “10 shows in 11 weeks.” This production will feature 10 to 12 10 Encore Atlanta

local children, a hallmark of Theater of the Stars shows, and a policy that resonates personally with Joerder. “That’s how I started,” he explains. As Joerder learned the original choreography from de Lappe, so this new crop of aspiring actor/singers and dancers will learn de Mille’s movements from him as well. Joerder hopes this production of Oklahoma! will give audiences a fresh look at what it means to be American. “[It] is the feeling of young America,” he says, pointing out that the world of the play feels very different from the politically divisive times in which we live. “The musical always will be an important American tradition,” Joerder says. “It’s so American, one of our quintessential contributions. No one does it as well as the Americans.”

He should know. Norb Joerder has toured extensively through Europe, the U.K., Australia and the United States; staged productions for Broadway and regional theaters; and directed greats such as Jerry Orbach and Robert Goulet. A fulltime New York resident, Joerder isn’t daunted by the rigors of world traveling. Laughing, he states, “I find it wonderful. I’ve been around the world with shows. It’s almost like paid vacations. Oklahoma! – arguably the most American of American musicals – has lured Joerder back to Atlanta to work with TOTS, for which he has staged more 10 productions, including South Pacific and Camelot. Working in Atlanta is “always like going home, he says. “The Fox Theatre is such a wonderful theater. Atlanta audiences are so responsive. Reviving classics like Oklahoma! allows Joerder to share his enthusiasm for the form with new audiences. Theater is a craft traditionally handed down from generation to generation. In sharing de Lappe’s vision of de Mille’s work, Joerder is bringing a proud tradition of mentorship full-circle, and sharing a bit of the musical’s magic that he fell in love with as a child. Oklahoma! plays The Fox Theatre June 19-29. Koye Berry is a writer/musician with a B.A. in Fine Arts from Maryland’s Loyola College.

James C. Howard
Chairman, Theater of the Stars Board of Trustees Long-term Board Member and Subscriber since 1979
Jim Howard is a managing partner of Smith & Howard, a local accounting firm he began in 1971. Mr. Howard was serves as Chairman of the Board of Trustees for Theater of the Stars.
What is your history with Theater of the Stars? My wife, Mary Long, was a dancer with the Atlanta Ballet and one of her best friends, Louise Hudson, had just started working at the intern or part-time level with Theater Under the Stars at Chastain Park. This was about the time they were getting ready to go off to college. Chris needed a role filled in Annie Get Your Gun. One of them suggested Mary Long audition for the part. So, she did and got it.
You were dating then? Yes, we were boyfriend and girlfriend. That was our initiation to Theater Under the Stars. This, you understand, was around 1960. The theater was just starting out. And, then, Louise went to work full-time after college for Chris, eventually becoming Executive Director for the company. Chris was looking for an accounting firm and we had just started one, so we worked for Theater of the Stars for about 10 or 15 years until I became a board member. Then, we referred it out to someone else. What are some of your favorite Theater of the Stars memories? From the first time I heard it, I fell in love with the music from Phantom of the Opera. We made a special trip to New York to see the show. I didn’t want to wait for it to come here. I had to see it. For my 50th birthday, we had a Phantom party and we must have had 60 people – 30 couples at least – who came to our house for dinner and drinks. Then, we boarded a bus and went to see Phantom of the Opera presented by Theater of the Stars at the Fox. We were all in black tie as if we were going to the opera. After the show, we went back to the house for drinks, and the rooms were lit with candelabras, like in the musical, and we had a great time. It was a legendary party. People still talk about it. (Laughs.) That was my favorite production, without a doubt. What other shows have you enjoyed? Certainly, Annie Get Your Gun. It has a special place in my heart. I love West Side Story also. Now, you are the Chair of the Theater of the Stars Board of Trustees. Why did you agree to serve? I agreed to serve out of respect for Chris. The Board’s primary responsibility will be to see that his legacy continues and lives into the future. That is our primary responsibility. What is something, outside of your professional life, that few people know about you? I love to sing with a microphone. What do you sing? Anything. Pop, Sinatra, a little country. It’s a lot of fun. I have a good ear for music, but I like to have the words in front of me. If you were introducing someone to Theater of the Stars for the first time, what would you tell them about it? I would tell them that they could always count on experiencing an excellently produced familyfriendly event.

RODGERS & HAMMERSTEIN (composer & librettist/lyricist) After long and highly distinguished careers with other collaborators, Richard Rodgers (composer, 1902-79) and Oscar Hammerstein II (librettist/lyricist, 1895-1960) joined forces in 1943 to create the most consistently fruitful and successful partnership in the American musical theatre. Oklahoma!, the first Rodgers & Hammerstein musical, was also the first of a new genre, the musical play, blending Rodgers’ sophisticated style of musical comedy (which he had perfected in a 25-year partnership with lyricist Lorenz Hart) with Hammerstein’s innovations in operetta (conceived in collaboration with such composers as Sigmund Romberg, Vincent Youmans, Rudolf Friml and Jerome

Kern.) Oklahoma! was followed by Carousel (1945), the movie State Fair (1945; remade 1962; Broadway premiere, 1996); Allegro (1947), South Pacific (1949), The King and I (1951), Me and Juliet (1953), Pipe Dream (1955), the TV musical Cinderella (1957; remade 1965, 1997); Flower Drum Song (1958) and The Sound of Music (1959). AGNES DE MILLE (Original Choreographer) was born in Harlem in 1905, but moved with her family to Hollywood when she was still a young girl. After training as a dancer, she soon became a choreographer as well. In 1939, she joined the American Ballet Theatre, where she created her first ballet, Black Ritual the following year. In 1942, she created Rodeo for the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo and Three Virgins And A Devil for the American Ballet Theater. Also that year, she was asked by Rodgers and Hammerstein to create the dances for what would become their ground‑breaking musical play, Oklahoma! Over the next two decades, De Mille went on to choreograph such landmark Broadway musicals as One Touch of Venus, Carousel, Allegro (which she also directed), Brigadoon, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, Paint Your Wagon, Goldilocks and Juno. (She also recreated her dances for Oklahoma! in the 1955 film version.) Also in the late ‘40s she furthered her innovative style with the ballets Tally-Ho and Fall River Legend. In 1952, she published the first volume of her autobiography, “Dance to the Piper;” she would eventually go on to publish nine more books. One of her last public appearances was to accept a special Tony Award for Oklahoma! at the June 1993 ceremonies; Agnes de Mille died in October of that year.

One-day getaways Nearby destinations offer hassle-free family fun By Katie Main
Summer is the perfect time for families to venture past the city limits and take advantage of what there is to do right outside of Atlanta. Off-the-beaten-path yet easy to get to, these greater Atlanta getaways are worth a trip:
Special Summer Events: At Etowah’s “Day of Discovery” (June 7), archaeologists Adam King and Kent Reilly will perform non-evasive archaeological work and talk about recent findings at the site. The mounds also will host “Indian Flute and Dancing” (June 28) with Cherokee musician Tommy Wildcat. Visitors are invited to come out in August for demonstrations of “Flint Knapping” (Aug 30), the making of stone tools. gastateparks.org/ info/etowah

Etowah Indian Mounds, Cartersville On the north side of the Etowah River is all that remains of an ancient Native American city: six flat-topped earthen mounds, a defensive ditch, two “borrow pits,” a moat and a ceremonial plaza. Home to the Etowah Indian tribe between 900 and 1550 A.D., the site is visited by more than 40,000 people annually. Walk through the park’s museum, enjoy a picnic or relax by the treelined riverbank (if the water is low, look for the ancient fish trap). You might see artist Drew Moates by the river, carving a dugout canoe in the traditional fashion – using seashells. When completed, Moates’ “dugout project” will become a museum piece.

Floodquist also reveals, ironically, that the collection displayed on Marietta’s historic square belongs to a Yankee. Chris Sullivan of Akron, Ohio, began compiling the memorabilia as a child and entrusted his many artifacts to the city of Marietta in 2003. Highlights include the ivory silk Bengaline gown worn by Vivien Leigh in the film, original movie scripts and a ticket to the premiere at Loew’s Grand Theater in December 1939. Special Summer Events: The 4th of July “StarSpangled Scarlett Weekend” (July 4-6) will bring together five original cast members – the largest gathering of Gone With the Wind’s actors in almost 20 years. Events will include a 1940s-themed dinner and dance, and autograph and photo opportunities. gwtwmarietta.com
Southeastern Railroad Museum
Southeastern Railway Museum, Duluth Considered Georgia’s official transportation history museum, visitors will see diesel and steam locomotives, passenger cars, freight cars, cabooses and more. The museum showcases more than 90 pieces of rolling stock, including Superb, the Pullman car that took president Warren G. Harding cross-country in 1923. Outside, visitors ride in cabooses behind vintage diesel locomotives on the museum’s operating railway. Special Summer Events: “Locomotive Celebration!” (June 7-8) will include locomotive tours and a scavenger hunt. At “Trains, Trucks, and Tractors” (July 12-13), guests will be invited to explore visiting tractors and trucks. srmduluth.org
Kangaroo Conservation Center, Dawsonville Head north to see the largest collection of kangaroos outside of Australia – in Dawsonville. Bred and cared for by Roger and Debbie Nelson and their staff, the kangas number over 300. Kangaroo Conservation Center “After you’ve worked here for a while, you can tell them all apart,” said Margaret Bowen, one of the center’s animal keepers. The site also is home to exotic birds, lizards and plants, and includes a butterfly garden, nature trail and space for boomerang demonstrations. For events, visit kangaroocenter.com. Preserving the Future
The League of Historic Theatres begins ‘Thinking Outside the Fox’ next month The castles that once lined Peachtree Street vanished long ago. So did the Loew’s Grand, where Gone With the Wind premiered. The Fox Theatre was scheduled for demolition in 1974, but an ardent civic campaign raised the funds to purchase the historic building and established Atlanta Landmarks Inc. to restore and manage the nonprofit theater. Unlike many non-profits, The Fox Theatre makes money. For the past 30 years, it has operated in the black. In 2007, Venues Today ranked it the No. 1 venue in America for its size in terms of box office revenue and attendance. 36 Encore Atlanta
Pollstar Magazine ranked it No. 5 in the world for ticket sales. Because it attracts up to 4,674 people per show, the Fox also has helped revitalize Midtown Atlanta, which was a ghost town in the mid-1970s. The audience needed places to eat and drink before and after the show besides the Varsity, so new restaurants opened and flourished. Major shows attracted people who lived far outside the metro area; their need for a place to stay helped support new hotels. In this way, the Fox Theatre not only is an iconic landmark, it is an example of how historic preservation

“Here’s [one of] your most profitable theaters in the world, and it’s in Atlanta.” – Molly Fortune, restoration director, Fox Theatre Preservation Department
can transform a community. “It shows that [theaters] can be an economic driver in your neighborhood” says Molly Fortune, restoration director for the Fox Theatre’s Preservation Department. “When you tear something like the Fox down, you’ve torn down more than a historic building, you’ve torn down the soul of the community. It’s an event, coming to a historic building [for a show].” Fortune sits on the board of the League of Historic American Theatres, which is holding its 32nd annual conference and theater tour at the Fox from July 16-19. Titled “Thinking Outside the Fox,” the conference will showcase and celebrate the salvation of the Fox and theaters like it throughout the U.S. and Canada, and examine their roles as catalysts for cultural and economic development in their communities. “Here’s [one of ] your most profitable theaters in the world, and it’s in Atlanta,” Fortune says. “We have an incredible theater culture here; I just want to celebrate that. And we’re run by a not-for-profit, we’re not run by a management corporation ... that’s huge.”

GOLDEN RULES The following brief, but important article has been published to assist in audience etiquette. To this day we get at least one phone call a week asking for reprint rights. These calls and letters come from orchestras and theaters, opera and ballet companies all over the United States and Canada, big and little troupes alike. The message, telegraphed between the lines, seems to be an S.O.S.: American audiences are out of control. Are they? Here’s a refresher course. Please read on, and remember, part of one’s pact as an audience member is to take seriously the pleasure of others, a responsibility fulfilled by quietly attentive (or silently inattentive) and selfcontained behavior. After all, you can be as demonstrative as you want during bows and curtain calls. 1. Go easy with the atomizer; many people are highly allergic to perfume and cologne. 2. If you bring a child, make sure etiquette is part of the experience. Children love learning new things. 3. Unwrap all candies and cough drops before the curtain goes up or the concert begins. 4. Make sure cell phones, beepers, and watch alarms are OFF. And don't jangle the bangles. 5. The overture is part of the performance. Please cease talking at this point. 6. Note to lovebirds: When you lean your heads together, you block the view of the person behind you. Leaning forward also blocks the view. 7. THOU SHALT NOT TALK, or hum, or sing along, or beat time with a body part. 8. Force yourself to wait for a pause or intermission before rifling through a purse, backpack or shopping bag. 9. Yes, the parking lot gets busy and public transportation is tricky, but leaving while the show is in progress is discourteous. 10. Honor the old standby: Do unto others, as you would have them do unto you. 44 Encore Atlanta
