‘trust in Your song’ How Spamalot’s Lady of the Lake found her grail By Kristi Casey Sanders

nstead of taking an internship the summer between her junior and senior years in college, Caroline Bowman decided to go to New York. “I made a pact to myself that I would go to any [audition] I was right for,” Bowman says. She auditioned for the role of Carmen Diaz in FAME — The Musical and Rizzo in Grease. “I ended up booking both jobs — which was awesome — but it put me in a bit of a pickle,” she says. FAME was scheduled to tour China for three months, followed by a one-month engagement of Grease — in Istanbul, Turkey. There was no way she’d be able to start her senior year at Penn State University on time. Luckily, she was able to work out a way she could miss a little school and graduate on time.

In China, she found that audiences followed a particular protocol. “They were very quiet during the show,” Bowman explains. “But at the end, they just erupted.” Every week, the show traveled to a new city. The highlight was Beijing, Bowman says, and seeing the Great Wall of China. A few days after graduating, Bowman flew to Turkey. The theater in Istanbul was an outdoor arena that doubled as a concert venue. “One night they tore down our set and Rihanna came in and performed on our stage,” Bowman remembers. From the stage, she could see the moon and its reflection on the Bosphorus, the body of water that separates Europe from Asia. Less than a year out of college, Bowman is on the road again. This time she’s in the national tour of Monty Python’s Spamalot.

going to happen and where the grail is. And one of her goals is to get King Arthur to marry her.” Although she knew of the Monty Python comedy troupe before joining Spamalot, she didn’t much care for the style. But her love of the show has transformed her into a big fan. “It’s kind of brilliant how simple the humor is,” she says. “People leave the show whistling and singing and feeling good. I think that’s what people want in their lives right now. I think 10 EncoreAtlantA.com

that’s one of the reasons why the show is so successful.” “Lovingly ripped off” from the 1975 film Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Monty Python’s Spamalot opened on Broadway in 2005. Directed by Mike Nichols, it received 14 Tony Award nominations and won three, including Tony Award for Best Musical. Its initial run grossed more than $175 million dollars, played more than 1,500 performances and was seen by more than two million people. The Lady of the Lake spends a lot of time offstage, but when she does appear, she makes a huge impact. Especially during the second act’s show-stopping “Diva’s Lament,” a solo number Bowman relishes. “It’s nothing but me and my vocals,” she says. “Every time I walk out on that stage, I get to make it mine. It’s empowering, and I feel like I’ll come out of this role with a new sense of confidence and power in what I have to offer.” The original Lady of the Lake, Sara Ramírez, won the Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Musical and went on to play the role of Callie Torres on “Grey’s Anatomy.” No one knows where Bowman will go from here. But if she follows her character’s advice to “trust in her song,” she’ll likely have many more opportunities to shine. Monty Python’s Spamalot plays the Fabulous Fox Theatre June 3-5.

“It’s so cool seeing all these different theaters and how beautiful they are,” Bowman says. “We performed at the St. Louis Fox and it was gorgeous. … I’m excited to come to the Fox in Atlanta.” Bowman plays the Lady of the Lake, King Arthur’s spiritual guardian, a woman with her own agenda. “She is this fabulous diva who shows up to help King Arthur,” Bowman says of her character. “She has a lot of power because she knows everything that’s

racious, Miss Celie’s work boots have covered a lot of ground since her story was first set to music at Atlanta’s Alliance Theatre in 2004. The Color Purple followed its world premiere there with a 15-month Broadway run and a first national tour that lasted nearly three years. This edition, the second national tour, first kicked up dirt in Baltimore in March 2010. Its cast of 25 and accompanying crew get a respite when its windows are shuttered June 26 in Nashville (although 2012 bookings are promised). All told, some 1,400 audiences, give or take, have seen Miss Celie’s journey from down-andout 14-year-old to gray-haired entrepreneur. The show’s Atlanta homecoming is a bit of a trifecta: There’s its birth at the Alliance; the fact that it’s set in Georgia (from 1909 to 1949); and finally, there’s Taprena Augustine, who plays Shug Avery.

BIN FAAARKREKKION (Writer). Faarkrekkion’s career typifies the Finnish economic miracle. Born the son of a humble woodcutter, Bin worked his way up through shrubbery management to become Professorof Treadmill Dynamics at the University of Toooti, believed to be the 28th most northerly university in the world. “I have always been interested in the relatively rapid transition from a predominantly rural agricultural base to one of the most advanced industrial economies in the Western world, and one day in the sauna, it came to me: What a great subject for a musical.” RUUDI KOKKI (Producer). Like Bin Faaarkrekkion, Kokki’s life has had its twists and turns. He learnt his trade up country where he was, for a time, the 28th most northerly person in Finland. “My father was a humble woodcutter. But at these latitudes,where it is dark for half the year, this was a very dangerous business, as it was not always possible to see where the trees are falling — and one year my father brought down a huge spruce on top of his friend Nee-Wom, partly killing him.” Kokki’s father would never touch a tree again. He would hang about the cabin nursing his grief, rocking backwards and forwards and listening to the hated Swedish group Abba. “My loathing of Abba, and their enormous earnings, led me to my first musical venture, the formation of an alternative Finnish group: Udda. Two boys, two girls and, my master-stroke, one hermaphrodite, Ken-Angela Nuuti.” Udda’s problems are now well known. Shiiti refused to share a towel with Noggi, Bonk

complained that Tuulivaarskinonen’s name was bigger on the door and Ken-Angela turned out to be Norwegian. Kokki changed his name to Art Polaris and wrote Do Skleeezwiaanaenblon, an erotic opera set amongst the winkle pickers on Finland’s Baltic Sea coast. The show closed after only eight minutes. The sight of 94 aroused winkles was too much even for Helsinki’s liberal Ghooti Sponen newspaper. “Do Skleeezwiaaanaenblon gives Finnish erotic opera a bad name. I’ve seen more erotic activity at a builder’s yard.” Undaunted, Kokki set to work on an erotic opera set in a builder’s yard. Di Hoviekrekkertilllniamen, the story of a young female crane operator who pleasures herself during preliminary works connected with the extension of Helsinki’s Metro system, was an instant hit.“I discovered, for the first time, how many people were interested in the extension of the Metro system, and in the burgeoning Finnish economy generally.” Kokki set himself a new task, to represent this extraordinary economic transformation in music, dance, mime and magic. One night he was explaining his plans at the exclusive Sons of Humble Woodcutter’s Club in the chic Kongspalatzen, when a fellow diner pricked up his hears. His name was Bin Faaarkrekkion. The rest is history. DILLI AARNEN. Dilli, 43, began her career understudying Speeni Solkomen in The Keith Richard Story. She’s married to producer Mooni Moorikikinen but is having an affair with Ost Fwellok and Stubbi Bwenolllenson. She has won four Golden Nukkies. Atlanta’s Performing Arts Publication 17

CAST SWELL PEST. Swell is best known for his portrayal of Gossi Tweshonen, the unsighted bus driver in Finn TV’s hit series “Aaarghh! Villianomeniaanen Schiederrbobrana Ig” (“Watch Out!”). He lives in the woods many miles north of Helsinki in a house modelled on Steve Earle’s early hit “Guitar Town.” SAD AAARSE. As well as being Finland’s open unicycle champion, Sadd is a keen environmentalist, who believes that man has much to learn from the moose. “We think we have all the answers, but we don’t. If we did we’d have horns.” He has twice won the Shapeless Gray Thing of Tampere. THE HONNI OBIKKIONEN SINGERS. Twelve boys, seven girls and an ostrich who all met up at Utsjoki Cold Research Institute in the extreme north of Finland. “There was not much to do in the evenings but sneeze,” laughs Honni, now 57, “so we used to cheer everyone up with a few Leonard Cohen songs.They went down so well that we now do Tom Waits, Tibetan songs for the dead and Petula Clark.” A little-known fact about the Honni Obikkionen Singers is that they once had two ostriches in the team. STONG VATTIAAANIKKERA (MooseTrainer). Stong, twice winner of the most westerly man in Finland, grew up with moose.“Very often I would go down to breakfast and find moose in the kitchen, in the car and sometimes listening to the radio, dressed up to look like my mother and father.” During almost a decade of psychiatric treatment, Stong took up ballet as a way of dealing with what he called “bad thoughts.” The treatment worked, and Stong took, and on the third time passed, accountancy exams. He returned to the community and rose to become CEO and lifetime president of the Finnish Steel Corporation. What few people knew was that in the evening Stong was combining the two “loves of my life”: moose and ballet. Without anyone knowing, he hired a theatre and put on his very own creation, Moose Lake. As a result he was re-admitted to hospital where, despite everyone’s best efforts, he wrote and scored 12 more moose ballets. Now 88 years old and a trim 193 pounds, Stong believes his time has come. “For years I was laughed at. I only hope I will be again tonight.”

TANAKA ING (Director). The only non-Finn in the company, Ing has a long history in experimental theatre, including Churchill’s History of the English Speaking People in mime, a salsa version of the Tibetan Book of the Dead and a puppet version of The U.S. Population Census of 1973. Agreat tennis lover, Ing went to Finland for a contemplation weekend and found himself hooked. “I love trees and always have, and in Finland there are something like a thousand trees for each person. I also like the bits in between them, which allow you to walk around the trees without hitting them. I hope I can do my bit to make the world sing along with the remarkable transformation from a predominantly conservative rural base to one of the most advanced industrial economies in the Western world.” Ing’s next project is to drain Lake Michigan for a day. Patrons are asked not to smoke or speak Swedish in the theatre. Please use cell phones whenever possible.

COME TO FINLAND If you’ve enjoyed this production, why not hop on a plane and see Finland for yourself? It is such a lovely place. (Mostly flat but with some raised bits.) Quite warm sometimes in the south, though on the whole colder in the north. There are some paper mills.The roads have relatively few bumps. All hotels have curtains. Things are very clean, but not pathologically so. It’s a great place for trees. Alongside the trees you will find other trees, which blend into a forest running for a thousand miles. If you’ve never seen a forest running, then Finland is the place for you.And don’t believe anyone who says you can’t get tomatoes there. Of course you can.

who’s who STEVE McCOY (King Arthur) is happy to be a part of the Spamalot family. Steve recently starred in the national tour of Man of La Mancha and has been in numerous tours (performing in every state in the USA) including 42nd Street, Oliver, The Will Rogers Follies, and the European tours of Oklahoma! and My Fair Lady. He had the great pleasure of working on a Jerry Herman tribute in Los Angeles with theatre legends Carol Channing and Angela Lansbury. They began collaborating on The Life of Brian, wrote several songs together for The Meaning of Life, The Contractual Obligation Album and the best-selling Python CD Monty Python Sings! They wrote a musical for BBC Radio Four called The Back Page, about sex, royalty and cricket, and a musical version of Edward Lear’s The Owl and The Pussycat, which was published by Dove Books as a book and CD under the title The Quite Remarkable Adventures of the Owl and the Pussycat. In 1999 they began performing a series of live concerts, first at the Getty Museum in Los Angeles, then on two tours of North America – Eric Idle Exploits Monty Python and The Greedy Bastard Tour (which became the best-selling book The Greedy Bastard Diary) in 2003. They released a CD of favorite music from places that don’t exist, The Rutland Isles, and have continued to release a series of unnecessarily rude songs for special occasions. In 2005, their musical Spamalot (directed by Mike Nichols) opened in New York and won a

Their collaboration continued with Not the Messiah (He’s a Very Naughty Boy) an oratorio based on The Life of Brian, which they have performed all round the world, most recently at The Royal Albert Hall with the BBC Symphony Orchestra and Chorus. The DVD and CD are now available. They collaborated on What About Dick? (2007) – a film for radio starring Eddie Izzard, Billy Connolly, Tracey Ullman and Tim Curry; Rutlemania, the Tribute Concert! JOHN DU PREZ (Music), a Trevelyan Scholar at Christ Church, Oxford, and associate of the Royal College of Music, he entered the film industry in 1978 composing additional music for Monty Python’s Life of Brian. This began a long association with Eric Idle, leading eventually to their writing partnership. He has scored more than 20 feature films including The Meaning of Life, A Private Function, A Fish Called Wanda, Once Bitten, UHF and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles I, II, and III. Other Python projects include the Contractual Obligation Album, Monty Python at the Hollywood Bowl and The Fairly Incomplete & Rather Badly Illustrated Monty Python Song Book. He also has designed shows for Norwegian Cruise Lines. He began his career as a design assistant for the Royal Shakespeare Company and the Royal National Theater in London. SCOTT TAYLOR (Re-created Choreography) has supervised and performed in 12 original Broadway shows, including A Little Night Music, Broadway Bound, Spamalot, Contact, Thou Shalt Not, Steel Pier, Victor/ Victoria, Showboat, Crazy for You, CATS, Wind in the Willows, A Christmas Carol, Sinatra at Radio City, and A Little Night Music at the NYC and LA Opera. Mr. Manos has been in Atlanta for more than 40 years. He has produced over 700 works of theater, ballet and opera. He has been recognized with num ero us civic awards, including the Atlanta Critics Award for the development of the art of thea ter in Atlanta and the Governor’s Award in the Arts. He has been instrumental in the creation of such organizations as the Winter Play Season, Grand Opera in the Park, Just Us Theater Company and the Fall Film Festival – just to name a few! During the early months of the Woodruff Arts Center, Mr. Manos was responsible for 12 productions of theater, ballet and opera in that facility. Mr. Manos received the Coca-Cola Lifetime Achievement in the Arts Award from the Arts & Business Council of the Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce. In 2005, Mr. Manos was the first recipient of the GAELA Award, presented by the Atlanta Coalition of Performing Arts. In 2007, Mr. Manos was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Broadway League. Mr. Manos was married for 45 years to the late Glenn Ryman Manos. He has two sons, Chris Jr. and Nick, a daughter, Ann, and is the very proud grandfather of seven grandsons and four granddaughters.

Mr. Manos is a graduate of the Westminster Schools in Atlanta and the University of North Carolina, where he was a Morehead Scholar. His career spans three decades in leadership positions. In the fall of 2000, he returned to Atlanta to become the managing director of Theater of the Stars. In 2008, he assumed the role of president. Mr. Manos has been heavily involved with the touring aspect of the company and has been the driving force behind many of the artistic and cultural marvels brought to the Theater of the Stars stage, including the world professional premiere of Disney's High School Musical, the co-productions of Deaf West’s Big River, The King And I with Sandy Duncan, Bombay Dreams and the newly re-imagined version of Les Misérables. Mr. Manos is the founder of the Junior Theatre Festival, an event that takes place every January in Atlanta, and brings students from all over the world together to perform, learn and celebrate theater. Mr. Manos and his wife Laura have been blessed with three children — Andy, Kate and Sam — and one crazy dog, Peach.

etiquette 1. Arrive early. If you are late, you may be held out or reseated until an appropriate time for you to get to your assigned seat. People who arrive late disturb the performers on stage and audience members. It is best to arrive about 30 minutes early so that you have time to purchase concessions, find your seat, and read the program before the show starts. 2. Take care of personal needs (drinks of water or restroom) because you should not leave your seat until the intermission or until the performance ends. 3. Please sit in the seat you are assigned so you do not cause confusion for other audience members. 4. The Fox opened December 25, 1929, and tickets cost between 15 and 75 cents. Two shows were advertised — one at 1:30 p.m. and the other at 8:30 p.m. — and included Walt Disney’s cartoon Steamboat Willie and the feature film Salute. The Fox was one of the first examples of theatres designed to accommodate wide screens. The screen was 80 feet wide, four feet wider than the Roxy Theatre in New York. The Fox Theatre was known as the “Disney Theatre” because it was the first theatre in Atlanta to screen Walt Disney Studio’s familyfriendly movies Alice in Wonderland, Cinderella, Peter Pan, and Lady and the Tramp.

his role in Rock Of Ages). But he is the most intriguing, thanks in part to an incredible backstory. Fedorov, now 26, was born in the Ukraine with a birth defect in his windpipe. He had a tracheotomy as a toddler, and doctors were skeptical he’d ever be able to speak, much less sing. Today, he admits that this potentially devastating experience gives him an added appreciation for the art. “I feel extremely blessed,” he says. “Not only did God decide to save me but he also gave me the gift of singing.

I could definitely relate to Joseph’s story, and in his story I was able to find myself and gain new strength in my own life’s journey.” After the current tour is over, that journey will include the release of Fedorov’s first solo album, which he describes as a mixture between the arena rock of Daughtry and the alternative pop of Coldplay. He admits he’s extremely excited about the chance to strut his stuff as a songwriter and recording artist, but insists that he will continue to perform in musical theater. And with every step towards greater success, Fedorov remains thankful for the role “American Idol” played in his life. “If it wasn’t for my success on ‘American Idol,’ I’d probably still be singing in clubs and waiting for my big break. [It] opened a lot of doors and gave me an amazing platform to become a successful artist. ‘American Idol’ got my foot in the door,” he says with a thoughtful smile, “ and now it’s up to me to do the rest.” Joseph & the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat plays the Fox Theatre June 21-26. Learn about how some of the world’s most famous architects and designers have created bathrooms that are as functional as they are fashionable at “Water Dream: The Art of Bathroom Design,” which will be on display from June 25 to Sept. 24. The bathrooms shown are designed to conserve water, which the curators hope will inspire an appreciation for how “concepts resonate into realities.” Among the bathroom fixtures featured are ones from Hansgrohe, a European brand that’s emphasized innovative design and an ecofriendly vision since 1901. Augustine, a New Orleans girl, settled in Atlanta in the late 1990s and early 2000s, doing background vocals for various R&B artists, performing at Apache Café and Café 290, appearing at the Alliance in A Christmas Carol and Sophisticated Ladies, and at Atlanta Lyric Theatre in Little Shop of Horrors and Hairspray. She began singing in Big Easy clubs at age 8. (“It was New Orleans, no one cared,” she explains.) She’s used that Bourbon Street background to inform her portrayal of Shug and the research she’s done on popular singers of the day, particularly Bessie Smith (1894-1937) and Ethel Waters (1896-1977). “Bessie had a wonderful way of turning adversity into triumph, and many of her songs are the tales of liberated women,” biographer Chris 56 EncoreAtlantA.com

Albertson wrote of Smith. He could just as easily have been describing the fictional Shug Avery. Janis Joplin once said, “[Ethel Waters] showed me the air and taught me how to fill it.” Celie might have used the same words to describe Shug. The character of Shug Avery is appropriately complex. She is a Southern woman, first and foremost. A singer. A preacher’s daughter. A traveler. A woman uncomfortable with the conventions of the time, which would have her wed, waiting on her man and having babies. Augustine also points out that the story of The Color Purple begins when people were barely a generation removed from slavery. “I cannot imagine growing up in that time,” she says. “You had limitations.”

For her, The Color Purple even has a touch of ministry to it. “I’ve never done a show where people come up to me afterward crying,” she says, “where battered women come up to me and say ‘thank you.’ You realize your power to touch people is amazing.” The Color Purple plays the Fox Theatre June 15 through 19. There seem to have been few limits on Augustine, who made her move from regional to national theater about as quickly as you can say “push ‘da button.” Heeding the advice of Sophisticated Ladies castmates a few years back, Augustine booked a brief working vacation to New York, lining up as many auditions as she could. The gamble worked: In that one week she booked 1½ years of work, including a role in the national tour of The Pajama Game and this gig in The Color Purple. What sets this production of Color Purple apart from Alice Walker’s 1983 Pulitzer Prize-winning novel and Stephen Spielberg’s 1985 movie, she indicates, is its “voice.” “The music has the capacity to change everything, to express anything,” Augustine says. For evidence she cites “Hell No!,” Sofia’s declaration of independence from her beloved, misguided husband Harpo. Or Shug’s “Too Beautiful for Words,” sung to Celie, who has felt nothing to that point except her “ugliness.” Or Celie’s triumphant “I’m Here,” an affirmation of survival after four decades of hard labor, beatings, and sexual and emotional abuse. Augustine sees herself as a “work in progress,” a feeling that aligns her more with Celie than Shug. Although she’s worked professionally for a good amount of time and is onstage for eight shows a week, she sees every performance as a chance to improve
