‘‘I got my life back.’’ Christine Keeley’s chest pain made everything difficult, from walking up a flight of stairs to going to the grocery store. “My body was crying out in stress; I just didn’t realize it.” Medication didn’t help. Even resigning from her stressful job didn’t help. So she went to see Dr. Caras, who determined that angioplasty was her best option. “After my surgery, I felt better right away. Dr. Caras and his team really listened to me, and helped me learn how to listen to my body.” Christine’s taking good care of herself, participating in WellStar’s Cardiac Rehab program and exercising regularly. “Now, I have energy that goes and goes and goes. I can do anything – even keep up with my grandkids.”
If you have heart, you can do just about anything. Living well takes planning. It takes perseverance. And most of all, it takes heart. That’s why, every day, across five counties and five hospitals, WellStar is helping people like Christine with a world-class cardiac network. From prevention to catheterization and open-heart surgery to rehabilitation, we put our whole hearts into taking care of yours.
We believe in heart.

Caroline Bowman as the Lady of the Lake in Monty Python’s Spamalot.

‘trust in Your song’ How Spamalot’s Lady of the Lake found her grail By Kristi Casey Sanders
I
nstead of taking an internship the summer between her junior and senior years in college, Caroline Bowman decided to go to New York. “I made a pact to myself that I would go to any [audition] I was right for,” Bowman says. She auditioned for the role of Carmen Diaz in FAME — The Musical and Rizzo in Grease. “I ended up booking both jobs — which was awesome — but it put me in a bit of a pickle,” she says. FAME was scheduled to tour China for three months, followed by a one-month engagement of Grease — in Istanbul, Turkey. There was no way she’d be able to start her senior year at Penn State University on time. Luckily, she was able to work out a way she could miss a little school and graduate on time.
In China, she found that audiences followed a particular protocol. “They were very quiet during the show,” Bowman explains. “But at the end, they just erupted.” Every week, the show traveled to a new city. The highlight was Beijing, Bowman says, and seeing the Great Wall of China. A few days after graduating, Bowman flew to Turkey. The theater in Istanbul was an outdoor arena that doubled as a concert venue. “One night they tore down our set and Rihanna came in and performed on our stage,” Bowman remembers. From the stage, she could see the moon and its reflection on the Bosphorus, the body of water that separates Europe from Asia. Less than a year out of college, Bowman is on the road again. This time she’s in the national tour of Monty Python’s Spamalot.
“If you trust in your song/Keep your eyes on the goal/ Then the prize you won’t fail/That’s your grail.” — Lady of the Lake, “Find Your Grail,” Monty Python’s Spamalot Atlanta’s Performing Arts Publication 9
going to happen and where the grail is. And one of her goals is to get King Arthur to marry her.” Although she knew of the Monty Python comedy troupe before joining Spamalot, she didn’t much care for the style. But her love of the show has transformed her into a big fan. “It’s kind of brilliant how simple the humor is,” she says. “People leave the show whistling and singing and feeling good. I think that’s what people want in their lives right now. I think 10 EncoreAtlantA.com
that’s one of the reasons why the show is so successful.” “Lovingly ripped off” from the 1975 film Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Monty Python’s Spamalot opened on Broadway in 2005. Directed by Mike Nichols, it received 14 Tony Award nominations and won three, including Tony Award for Best Musical. Its initial run grossed more than $175 million dollars, played more than 1,500 performances and was seen by more than two million people. The Lady of the Lake spends a lot of time offstage, but when she does appear, she makes a huge impact. Especially during the second act’s show-stopping “Diva’s Lament,” a solo number Bowman relishes. “It’s nothing but me and my vocals,” she says. “Every time I walk out on that stage, I get to make it mine. It’s empowering, and I feel like I’ll come out of this role with a new sense of confidence and power in what I have to offer.” The original Lady of the Lake, Sara Ramírez, won the Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Musical and went on to play the role of Callie Torres on “Grey’s Anatomy.” No one knows where Bowman will go from here. But if she follows her character’s advice to “trust in her song,” she’ll likely have many more opportunities to shine. Monty Python’s Spamalot plays the Fabulous Fox Theatre June 3-5.

“It’s so cool seeing all these different theaters and how beautiful they are,” Bowman says. “We performed at the St. Louis Fox and it was gorgeous. … I’m excited to come to the Fox in Atlanta.” Bowman plays the Lady of the Lake, King Arthur’s spiritual guardian, a woman with her own agenda. “She is this fabulous diva who shows up to help King Arthur,” Bowman says of her character. “She has a lot of power because she knows everything that’s

racious, Miss Celie’s work boots have covered a lot of ground since her story was first set to music at Atlanta’s Alliance Theatre in 2004. The Color Purple followed its world premiere there with a 15-month Broadway run and a first national tour that lasted nearly three years. This edition, the second national tour, first kicked up dirt in Baltimore in March 2010. Its cast of 25 and accompanying crew get a respite when its windows are shuttered June 26 in Nashville (although 2012 bookings are promised). All told, some 1,400 audiences, give or take, have seen Miss Celie’s journey from down-andout 14-year-old to gray-haired entrepreneur. The show’s Atlanta homecoming is a bit of a trifecta: There’s its birth at the Alliance; the fact that it’s set in Georgia (from 1909 to 1949); and finally, there’s Taprena Augustine, who plays Shug Avery.

Theater of the Stars is a Not-for- Profit Cultural Treasure which was founded in Atlanta in 1953. We are founding members of the Atlanta Coalition for Performing Arts (ACPA), National Alliance for Musical Theatre (NAMT), The Independent Presenters Network (IPN) and long standing members of the Broadway League (presenters of the Tony Awards ®)
Dear Patrons, Subscribers and Friends: Welcome to the first show of our 2011 season, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. This biblical saga of Joseph and his coat of many colors comes to vibrant life in this production. The musical styles ranging from countrywestern to calypso to rock ’n’ roll ensures that everyone has a favorite song and has a great time. This Old Testament tale is both timely and timeless and is always a crowd pleaser. We are happy to welcome Anthony Fedorov to our stage and know that you will love his voice and his portrayal of Joseph. Anthony is best known as a season four “American Idol” contestant and has performed the role of Joseph across the country. We are also happy to have Janet Metz as our Narrator, who previously performed the role with Donny Osmond. Last but not least, we would also like to acknowledge the enormous children’s chorus (more than 50 kids) that is included in this production. We had an amazing audition with wonderful local youth actors, and are happy to have them perform in our show. We are proud of the actors chosen for this production and know you will also appreciate the musical and acting talent on our stage. As we start our 59th season, I’d like to thank you for being an integral part of our not-for-profit theater company. We are very excited by our lineup and look forward to the productions coming to the Fox Theatre. Next up in our season is the first national tour of the five-time Tony Award-nominated smash hit musical Rock of Ages (July 5–10) with “American Idol’s” Constantine Maroulis. Then, we produce the classic about Anatevka, Fiddler on the Roof (July 19–24), followed by the show that brings together the legendary music of Frank Sinatra and the creative vision of Tony-Award-winner Twyla Tharp, Come Fly Away (Aug. 2–7). We continue with the unforgettable oddball romantic comedy, Guys and Dolls (Aug. 16-21) and conclude by producing the popular favorite, Annie (Jan. 14-22), which we plan to cast with a majority of local actors. It’s an exciting lineup and we hope to see you there!

ANTHONY FEDOROV (Joseph) is an “American Idol” veteran. On season four of the show, audiences clicked with Anthony thanks to his charisma and heartfelt performances. After his TV run, Fedorov made good on a promise to not break his artistic stride. “The American Idol” Summer Tour followed and saw more than half a million fans across 44 cities turning out to experience Fedorov’s live show. TIM RICE (Lyrics) was born in 1944. He began songwriting in 1965 with “That’s My Story” (tune as well as words), which was recorded by the Nightshift, a rock group whose career never recovered. That same year he met fellow budding songwriter Andrew Lloyd Webber, whose musical ambitions were in theatre. They teamed up and wrote four musicals together from 1965 to 1978. The first, The Likes Of Us (1965-66) was performed for the first time in 2005 and became available on CD just 40 years after its creation. The other three, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (1968), Jesus Christ Superstar Atlanta’s Performing Arts Publication 25
bios (1969–71) and Evita (1976–78) were more immediate successes. Feeling certain that they could never top this lot, the pair went their separate ways in the early eighties, whereupon Lloyd Webber immediately topped that lot with Cats. Rice wrote Blondel (1983), a medieval romp with Stephen Oliver that ran a mere year in London. (It was last revived at the Pleasance, Islington, in late 2006.) Chess, written in collaboration with Abba’s Bjorn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson, followed in 1986 and had a healthy West End run but flopped on Broadway in 1988. The New York Times bloke (since replaced) was particularly forceful in his disapproval. In 1989, Tim translated the famous French musical Starmania (by Michel Berger and Luc Plamondon) into English, resulting in a hit album — in France. In the 1990s ,he worked primarily and happily with the Disney empire, contributing lyrics to the movies Aladdin (music by Alan Menken) and The Lion King, (music by Elton John and Hans Zimmer), and to the stage shows Beauty and the Beast (Alan Menken), The Lion King and Aida (both Sir Elton). He also wrote the words for Sir Cliff Richard’s theatrical blockbuster Heathcliff (music by John Farrar), which toured the UK in 1995–96. For Dreamworks, he and Sir Elton joined forces for the score of the 2000 animated film The Road to El Dorado. Tim’s recent work has included lyrics for a forthcoming film of the Nutcracker (music by Tchaikovsky) and for the late Sir Malcolm Arnold’s famous Peterloo oratorio. He is reworking an operatic musical he has written with Alan Menken (King David) — most recently staged at New York University in November 2008. In 2008 he produced and presented a concert version of Chess at London’s Royal Albert Hall starring Josh Groban, Idina Menzel and Adam Pascal. A CD and DVD were issued worldwide in 2009. Tim has finished the first draft of 26 EncoreAtlantA.com
a brand-new theatrical idea, which may or may not see the light of day. He is writing and presenting a major new radio series for BBC Radio 2 in 2009-10. He has won a variety of awards, mainly for the wrong things or for simply turning up. These include three Oscars, four Tonys, five or six Grammys and a dozen Ivor Novellos. He was awarded a star on Hollywood Boulevard’s Walk of Fame in November 2008. He is a trustee (former president) of the Marylebone Cricket Club and chairman of the UK charitable Foundation for Sport and the Arts. Tim lives in London, Cornwall and on the motorway between the two, has three children, his own cricket team and a knighthood. The first volume of his autobiography, “Oh What a Circus,” was published in September 1999. If his publishers ask, he is working on Part 2, due out four years ago. ANDREW LLOYD WEBBER (Music) is the composer of The Likes of Us, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Jesus Christ Superstar, By Jeeves, Evita, Variations and Tell Me on a Sunday (later combined as Song & Dance), Cats, Starlight Express, The Phantom of the Opera, Aspects of Love, Sunset Boulevard, Whistle Down the Wind, The Beautiful Game, The Woman in White and Love Never Dies. He composed the film scores of Gumshoe and The Odessa File, and a setting of the Latin Mass Requiem. His producing credits include his own shows and Daisy Pulls It Off, Lend Me a Tenor, Shirley Valentine, La Bête, the groundbreaking Bollywood musical Bombay Dreams, his smash hit production of The Sound of Music starring Connie Fisher, The Wizard of Oz starring Michael Crawford and Danielle Hope, and the film of The Phantom of the Opera. His latest musical Love Never Dies, which continues the story of the Phantom and Christine, received its world premiere at London’s
bios Adelphi Theatre in March 2010 and will open in Melbourne and Tokyo later this year. He pioneered TV casting for musical theatre with the Emmy Award-winning BBC series “How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria?” He repeated his success with “Any Dream Will Do” which cast the title role of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and I’d Do Anything which cast the roles of Nancy and Oliver for Oliver! In the 2010 BBC series “Over the Rainbow,” Danielle Hope was cast as Dorothy in his new production of The Wizard of Oz. It opened at the London Palladium in March. Lloyd Webber’s awards include seven Tonys, three Grammys including best contemporary classical composition for Requiem, seven Oliviers, a Golden Globe, an Oscar, two international Emmys, the Praemium Imperiale, the Richard Rodgers Award for Excellence in Musical Theatre and The Kennedy Center Honor. He owns seven London theatres including the Theatre Royal Drury Lane and the London Palladium. He was knighted in 1992 and created an honorary life peer in 1997.

RENT
June 10 – 26, 2011 Atlanta Lyric Theatre is thrilled to announce Felicia Boswell starring as Mimi in our upcoming production of Rent. A Lyric veteran, Felicia is currently starring in the lead role of Broadway’s 2010 best musical Memphis! Following Rent, Felicia will star in the first national tour of Memphis! Rent is a Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning Broadway musical based loosely on Puccini’s opera “La Bohème.” The musical follows a year in the lives of seven friends living in the disappearing Bohemian lifestyle in New York’s Alphabet City located in the East Village. As the impoverished artists deal with their daily struggles, tragedy hits, and the love they share embodies their lives. The music, characters and story of Rent celebrate love, diversity and the power of friendship, as shown through the musical’s signature song, “Seasons of Love.” This blockbuster show will truly inspire and move any audience. etiquette 1. Arrive early. If you are late, you may be held out or reseated until an appropriate time for you to get to your assigned seat. People who arrive late disturb the performers on stage and audience members. It is best to arrive about 30 minutes early so that you have time to purchase concessions, find your seat, and read the program before the show starts. 2. Take care of personal needs (drinks of water or restroom) because you should not leave your seat until the intermission or until the performance ends. 3. Please sit in the seat you are assigned so you do not cause confusion for other audience members. 4. Please silence or turn off all electronic devices, including cell phones, beepers, and watch alarms. You’ll be embarrassed if it goes off in the middle of a tense moment of the show and it will break the mood for everyone. We encourage you to share your experience at the Fox via social media, but please refrain from doing so or texting during performances; the glow from your device is distracting. 5. Most shows do not allow photography of any kind. Flash photography inside the theatre is never allowed as it is a distraction to those around you and a danger to the performers. 6. The overture is part of the performance. Please cease talking at this point. 7. The sound system for each show is provided by the touring production. Unfortunately, many variables exist that may occasionally hinder sound quality. Please let an usher know if you are having trouble hearing. Adjustments may be able to be made or an assisted listening device can be provided. 8. Dear Lovebirds, when you lean your heads together, you block the view of the people behind you. Please consider the people that will be seated behind you when choosing whether or not to wear a hat or what hair style you choose. 8. Please refrain from talking, humming, or singing along with the show, except when encouraged to do so by the artist or show. 9. Please wait for an appropriate moment to dig something out of your pocket or bag. 10. Go easy with the perfume and cologne, many people are highly allergic. 11. If you need assistance during the show, please go to your nearest volunteer usher. If additional assistance is needed the usher will get the appropriate person to further help you. 12. Yes, the parking lot gets busy and public transportation is tricky, but leaving while the show is in progress or before the actors have taken their final bows is discourteous. Wait until it is over and then exit with the rest of the audience. 13. Just be courteous and everyone will enjoy the show. 44 EncoreAtlantA.com

Fox fun facts: Movie Palace History
The Fox opened December 25, 1929, and tickets cost between 15 and 75 cents. Two shows were advertised — one at 1:30 p.m. and the other at 8:30 p.m. — and included Walt Disney’s cartoon Steamboat Willie and the feature film Salute. Song of the South premiered at the Fox Theatre November 12, 1946. Walt Disney came for the opening night. 46 EncoreAtlantA.com
The Fox was one of the first examples of theatres designed to accommodate wide screens. The screen was 80 feet wide, four feet wider than the Roxy Theatre in New York. The Fox Theatre was known as the “Disney Theatre” because it was the first theatre in Atlanta to screen Walt Disney Studio’s familyfriendly movies Alice in Wonderland, Cinderella, Peter Pan, and Lady and the Tramp.

Atlanta’s Fox Theatre was one of five “Crown Jewel” Fox Theatres. The other four were located in Brooklyn, San Francisco, Detroit and St. Louis. All these theatres were atmospheric in their design and décor. Here are some other fun facts:
Living the dream(coat) Anthony Fedorov on overcoming adversity, ‘American Idol’ and why he loves playing Joseph ay whatever you will about “American Idol’s” musical quality, but there’s no denying the show’s success at turning unknown aspiring singers into stars. From Kelly Clarkson and Jennifer Hudson to Carrie Underwood and Chris Daughtry, pop culture’s last decade is riddled with “Idol’s” overnight successes. Anthony Fedorov, who came in fourth on the show’s fourth season, is not the first “Idol” finalist to make the transition to Broadway (Constantine Maroulis earned a Tony nomination for 48 EncoreAtlantA.com
his role in Rock Of Ages). But he is the most intriguing, thanks in part to an incredible backstory. Fedorov, now 26, was born in the Ukraine with a birth defect in his windpipe. He had a tracheotomy as a toddler, and doctors were skeptical he’d ever be able to speak, much less sing. Today, he admits that this potentially devastating experience gives him an added appreciation for the art. “I feel extremely blessed,” he says. “Not only did God decide to save me but he also gave me the gift of singing.

followed, but it wasn’t until last year that he landed the part for which he is now best known, playing the lead in Joseph & the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. “This is my sixth time playing Joseph,” he says of the show’s current tour. “What makes this show special for me is that it allows me to live all my insecurities out loud, rejuvenating me and giving me strength to continue to push forward and fight for my dreams. Joseph goes through this incredible journey of first being on top, then being betrayed and crashing to the bottom, then coming 50 EncoreAtlantA.com
back on top bigger and better than ever. He has a special gift, and he never loses faith. I could definitely relate to Joseph’s story, and in his story I was able to find myself and gain new strength in my own life’s journey.” After the current tour is over, that journey will include the release of Fedorov’s first solo album, which he describes as a mixture between the arena rock of Daughtry and the alternative pop of Coldplay. He admits he’s extremely excited about the chance to strut his stuff as a songwriter and recording artist, but insists that he will continue to perform in musical theater. And with every step towards greater success, Fedorov remains thankful for the role “American Idol” played in his life. “If it wasn’t for my success on ‘American Idol,’ I’d probably still be singing in clubs and waiting for my big break. [It] opened a lot of doors and gave me an amazing platform to become a successful artist. ‘American Idol’ got my foot in the door,” he says with a thoughtful smile, “ and now it’s up to me to do the rest.” Joseph & the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat plays the Fox Theatre June 21-26. I get to wake up every single day and entertain people for a living, making them feel something using a voice that I wasn’t supposed to have. I’m very lucky.” That sort of humility made Fedorov an “Idol” fan favorite, but since leaving the show, he’s had to work hard to establish a stage career. With no previous theatrical experience, he landed a role in an off-Broadway production of The Fantasticks in 2007, and he’s been in love with musical theater ever since. MODA moves into midtown
By Kristi Casey Sanders
The museum’s new midtown location is in the Atlanta Public Library building across the street from the High Museum of Art. The space, restored by architects Perkins+Will, features a clean, modern design with environmentally friendly touches such as LED lighting and a water conservation system that collects rainwater from the roof and uses it as (non-potable) gray water. The 9,000-sq. ft. museum has applied for LEED Platinum certification 52 EncoreAtlantA.com
from the U.S. Green Building Council — the highest environmental rating buildings can achieve. On exhibit through June 13 is “Passione Italiana: Design of the Italian Motorcycle,” which is presented in association with Alabama’s Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum. On display are 11 masterpieces of Italian design from companies such as MV Agusta, Ducati, Bimota and Moto-Morini.

Learn about how some of the world’s most famous architects and designers have created bathrooms that are as functional as they are fashionable at “Water Dream: The Art of Bathroom Design,” which will be on display from June 25 to Sept. 24. The bathrooms shown are designed to conserve water, which the curators hope will inspire an appreciation for how “concepts resonate into realities.” Among the bathroom fixtures featured are ones from Hansgrohe, a European brand that’s emphasized innovative design and an ecofriendly vision since 1901. In addition to exhibits, MODA also presents special events. Every Thursday night from 6 to 8 p.m., the museum stays open late for Drink in Design, a reception that features guest musicians, screenings and demonstrations. MODA’s Design Conversation series welcomes a guest speaker every month. And this summer, campMODA is available for kids ages 6 through 12. The one-week sessions begin on Mondays and run

Augustine, a New Orleans girl, settled in Atlanta in the late 1990s and early 2000s, doing background vocals for various R&B artists, performing at Apache Café and Café 290, appearing at the Alliance in A Christmas Carol and Sophisticated Ladies, and at Atlanta Lyric Theatre in Little Shop of Horrors and Hairspray. She began singing in Big Easy clubs at age 8. (“It was New Orleans, no one cared,” she explains.) She’s used that Bourbon Street background to inform her portrayal of Shug and the research she’s done on popular singers of the day, particularly Bessie Smith (1894-1937) and Ethel Waters (1896-1977). “Bessie had a wonderful way of turning adversity into triumph, and many of her songs are the tales of liberated women,” biographer Chris 56 EncoreAtlantA.com
Albertson wrote of Smith. He could just as easily have been describing the fictional Shug Avery. Janis Joplin once said, “[Ethel Waters] showed me the air and taught me how to fill it.” Celie might have used the same words to describe Shug. The character of Shug Avery is appropriately complex. She is a Southern woman, first and foremost. A singer. A preacher’s daughter. A traveler. A woman uncomfortable with the conventions of the time, which would have her wed, waiting on her man and having babies. Augustine also points out that the story of The Color Purple begins when people were barely a generation removed from slavery. “I cannot imagine growing up in that time,” she says. “You had limitations.”

something, be it vocal technique, breath control or becoming more aware as an actor. For her, The Color Purple even has a touch of ministry to it. “I’ve never done a show where people come up to me afterward crying,” she says, “where battered women come up to me and say ‘thank you.’ You realize your power to touch people is amazing.” The Color Purple plays the Fox Theatre June 15 through 19. There seem to have been few limits on Augustine, who made her move from regional to national theater about as quickly as you can say “push ‘da button.” Heeding the advice of Sophisticated Ladies castmates a few years back, Augustine booked a brief working vacation to New York, lining up as many auditions as she could. The gamble worked: In that one week she booked 1½ years of work, including a role in the national tour of The Pajama Game and this gig in The Color Purple. What sets this production of Color Purple apart from Alice Walker’s 1983 Pulitzer Prize-winning novel and Stephen Spielberg’s 1985 movie, she indicates, is its “voice.” “The music has the capacity to change everything, to express anything,” Augustine says. For evidence she cites “Hell No!,” Sofia’s declaration of independence from her beloved, misguided husband Harpo. Or Shug’s “Too Beautiful for Words,” sung to Celie, who has felt nothing to that point except her “ugliness.” Or Celie’s triumphant “I’m Here,” an affirmation of survival after four decades of hard labor, beatings, and sexual and emotional abuse. Augustine sees herself as a “work in progress,” a feeling that aligns her more with Celie than Shug. Although she’s worked professionally for a good amount of time and is onstage for eight shows a week, she sees every performance as a chance to improve
