Hello, gorgeous. Where did you get that healthy glow? We hear you believe in taking care of yourself inside and out. That you get heart and lung cancer screenings. And that you take advantage of the latest technology, like digital mammography. During your pregnancy, you took childbirth and early parenting classes. And when your baby was born, you had your very own team of nurses. You even got rid of fibroid pain (with just the tiniest of scars) through uterine fibroid embolization (UFE). We know your secret. And we’re sharing it so everyone can now say, “Hello, WellStar.”
We believe in life well-lived.

Stompin’ to a joyful noise By Kathy Janich
I
t’s been said that one man’s trash is another man’s treasure. In the case of Stomp, that “trash” is a playground of sound and movement, a rhythmic cacophony of hands, feet, trash cans, lids, plungers, plastic bags, boots, brooms, buckets, dustbins, rubber tubing, Zippo lighters, sticks, hammers and hubcaps. It’s loud, proud and amazingly inventive. At its simplest, Stomp is an exploration of rhythm in everyday things. But Stomp – as theater, dance, music and performance art – is anything but simple. Its cast of eight to 12 indulges in an increasingly complicated combination of percussion and choreography in the course of each performance. To say that they dazzle and astound is an understatement. This is performance as tribal ritual, done in a steely industrial jungle. Stomp obviously doesn’t spend much on wardrobe – the performers dress way down, in shorts, torn jeans, kickbutt boots, distressed T’s and kerchiefs, but in a week’s time – there are eight performances in five days here – they go through something like 30 brooms, eight trash-can lids, five short dustbins, 10 poles (6-ft., 6-in. each), 15 pounds of sand, four blocks of athlete’s chalk, 12 pairs of drumsticks, 200 liters of water, eight bananas and 12 boxes of matches.
What a journey it has been. The Stomp phenomenon began in 1991 with two “buskers” on the streets of Brighton, England. Busking dates to the Middle Ages and is the British term for street performance that encourages passers-by to stop, look and listen. Twenty years ago, creators Luke Creswell and Steve McNicholas likely had no idea of the sensation they’d unloosed. Stomp’s performers have become rock stars. The show, although a bit of a mongrel by design, has an undeniable pedigree. It has been seen in more than 350 cities in 36 countries. An off-Broadway production continues to sell out in its 15th season. Companies crisscross the United States and Europe as they have for years. And there is a sit-down company in London. Stomp’s trophy case includes an Olivier Award (London’s Tony Award) for Best Choreography, off-Broadway’s Obie Award and a Drama Desk Award (New Atlanta’s Performing Arts Publication 9

and given two new full-scale routines using paint cans, tractor-tire inner tubes (think bungees) and strip-lighting recycling containers that imitate a gourdshaped South American percussion instrument known as the “guiro.” The new and the used, so to speak, are performed by musicians, dancers, singers, percussionists and actors from California, Texas, Massachusetts, Hawaii, Maryland and, of course, England. Along with their audiences, they seem to share one commonality. As performer Michael Landis puts it, “The way of the beat came to my heart.” Kathy Janich is an Atlanta theater artist and freelance writer. York) for Unique Theater Experience. It also was cited in Otis L. Guernsey’s highly respected industry tome, The Best Plays of 1993-94. In 2000, Stomp-ers performed for a millennial celebration on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. Cresswell and McNicholas have been honored by the American Choreography Association and have Stomp-ed with the Muppets. Second Avenue at Eighth Street in New York now is called “Stomp Avenue”; Entertainment Weekly, in 2008, listed Stomp among its “New Classics: The 50 Best Plays and Musicals, 1983-2008,” alongside Angels in America, August: Osage County; Fences; Grey Gardens; and Rent. Cresswell and McNicholas’ collaboration goes back to the early 1980s, when they belonged to a street band called Pookiesnackenburger and a theater group called Cliff Hanger. During that time, they concocted the famous “Bins” commercial for Heineken, the piece that eventually grew into Stomp’s showstopping dustbin dance. The show itself has changed as time stomps on. It “has evolved a great deal since its first incarnation,” McNicholas has said. “Every reworking has involved losing some pieces and gaining new ones but has always stayed true to the original premise of the show: to create rhythmic music with instantly recognizable objects and do it with an eccentric sense of character and humor.” So you won’t ever see the same old Stomp, routine for routine. This goround has been updated, restructured
Burn, Baby Burn! Former “So You Think You Can Dance” star Karen Hauer sizzles in Burn The Floor By Bret Love he last time we saw Venezuela-born ballroom dancer Karen Hauer, she was being eliminated from the sixth season of “So You Think You Can Dance.” But in her defeat, the 2008 World Mambo Champion found victory, getting cast alongside fellow SYTYCD alums Anya Garnis, Pasha Kovalev, Robbie Kmetoni and Janette Manrara (not to mention “American Idol” finalist Vonzell Solomon) in the original cast of Burn The Floor. Now on tour after successful runs on Broadway and London’s West End, the show brings the passion and power of Latin and Ballroom dance styles to the 12 EncoreAtlantA.com
theatrical stage. From the Viennese waltz and the foxtrot to salsa, rumba and pose doble, the dazzling show is like a walk through the history of modern dance. We recently caught up with Hauer to talk about her life in dance, her time on TV and how Burn The Floor is like nothing audiences have ever seen. You came to the U.S. from Venezuela at the age of 8. When did you first fall in love with dance? I always say that dance found me. I was in a school-wide audition for a new dance Continued on page 58

BALLROOM DANCE Burn the Floor features “international style,” which has been danced competitively since 1920. Ballroom dancing is comprised of 10 dances. The five standard dances: the waltz is a ballroom dance with a strong accent on the first beat and a pattern of step-step-close. The foxtrot employs a syncopated rhythm and the use of “trotting steps.” Established as a French peasant dance in 1559, The Viennese Waltz became popular in the 1800s in Vienna. The Tango originated in Argentina and was brought to Paris in 1910. In order to move around the ballroom floor, the international tango was born in the 1930s and combined ballroom dances with staccato action. Emerging from ragtime and from dances like The Charleston, Quickstep follows a 4/4 rhythm, similar to foxtrot. The five Latin dances: The Cuban Cha Cha was popularized in the 1950s and is an offshoot of the triple mambo. The Samba originated in Brazil and features intricate cross percussive music. Paso Doble developed in France and is of Spanish origin. Its high style was based on the use of both marching steps and the bullfight. The Rumba, also Cuban, is the most sensuous of the Latin American dances. It is a dance of lust. The Jive is based on jazz or improv; it originated in the U.S. from African-Americans in the early 1940s. Soldiers took the Lindy hop/jitterbug to Europe during WWII.

GOLDEN RULES The following brief, but important, article has been published to assist in audience etiquette. To this day we get at least one phone call a week asking for reprint rights. These calls and letters come from orchestras and theatres, opera and ballet companies all over the United States and Canada, big and little troupes alike. The message, telegraphed between the lines, seems to be an S.O.S.: American audiences are out of control. Are they? Here’s a refresher course. Please read on, and remember, part of one’s pact as an audience member is to take seriously the pleasure of others, a responsibility fulfilled by quietly attentive (or silently inattentive) and selfcontained behavior. After all, you can be as demonstrative as you want during bows and curtain calls. 1. Go easy with the atomizer; many people are highly allergic to perfume and cologne. 2. If you bring a child, make sure etiquette is part of the experience. Children love learning new things. 3. Unwrap all candies and cough drops before the curtain goes up or the concert begins. 4. Make sure cell phones, beepers, and watch alarms are OFF. And don't jangle the bangles. 5. The overture is part of the performance. Please cease talking at this point. 6. Note to lovebirds: When you lean your heads together, you block the view of the person behind you. Leaning forward also blocks the view. 7. THOU SHALT NOT TALK, or hum, or sing along, or beat time with a body part. 8. Force yourself to wait for a pause or intermission before rifling through a purse, backpack, or shopping bag. 9. Yes, the parking lot gets busy and public transportation is tricky, but leaving while the show is in progress is discourteous. 10. Honor the old standby: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. — Broadway Theatre League

Fox fun facts: the ballrooms
The Egyptian Ballroom, Grand Salon, and Spanish Room were all originally Shriner meeting spaces. Here are some other fun facts: The Egyptian Ballroom was reserved for Shriner ceremonies and celebrations, and the adjoining Grand Salon served as their library.
In the 1970s, the walls of the Egyptian Ballroom were covered with several coats of paint obscuring the original stenciled designs. As years of paint were removed, vivid Egyptian symbols for life and rebirth were revealed, along with row after row of fake hieroglyphics. Depicted on the Egyptian Ballroom’s balcony is a scarab, or dung beetle, which was the symbol for the sun god Ra, who was thought to ward off evil. It is surrounded by the wings of Osiris, god of the underworld, afterlife, and resurrection. Above the Egyptian Ballroom’s stage stretch the gilded and glazed wings of Osiris. A plaster intaglio panel of 46 EncoreAtlantA.com
Ramses II subduing an enemy is the focal point of the stage. The hieroglyphics on the underside of the balcony read, “Welcome you who is bringer of joy.” The other hieroglyphics in the room are not arranged to make real phrases.

The 7,500-sq. ft. Egyptian Ballroom’s original floor is hard rock maple. A custom-designed carpet with Egyptian symbols of the afterlife and resurrection now protects the maple floor.

Going gluten free Avoiding allergens doesn’t mean you need to settle for bland food By Kristi Casey Sanders

miscarriages, and those symptoms vary wildly from person to person. The only thing those afflicted have in common is that when they consume the protein gluten, which is found in wheat, rye, spelt, barley, malt and contaminated oats, they can’t digest it. The gluten scrapes the small intestine, much like you scrape your knee; the more gluten introduced to the system, the larger the internal wound becomes. Luckily, there is an easy fix (if you can stomach it): Avoid gluten entirely, which allows the intestines to heal. But because even a half a teaspoon of gluten or food contaminated with gluten can make a celiac sufferer sick, it’s crucial that when eating out, you go someplace SHUTTERSTOCK
f you cut your hand, chances are you would clean the wound and keep it bandaged until it healed. But how do you clean and dress a wound you can’t see? That’s the quandary millions of people with celiac disease face every day. Celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder that affects about one in 133 people. But, according to the Celiac Disease Foundation (celiac.org), 97 percent of those who have the disease don’t know they do. Part of the difficulty in diagnosing the disease stems from the vast range of symptoms people exhibit. Celiac disease has been linked to everything from eczema and diarrhea to thyroid disorders, lupus and spontaneous

Burgers and fries Even foods that seem like they’d be safe — french fries, for example — often aren’t because they’re fried in the same oil as flour-dusted creations like onion rings. So it’s a real treat finding some place that uses separate fryers. Five Guys Burgers (fiveguys. com) is safe — just order the burger without a bun and be smart about toppings. Five Guys does cook the fries in peanut oil and has peanuts by the front door, so this may not be a good choice for those with nut allergies. Yeah Burger! (yeahburger.com) offers a high-end alternative. In addition to serving hormone-free, organic burgers and sides, the hip restaurant offers gluten-free hotdog and hamburger buns as well as onion rings and fries. If you feel like splurging, go whole hog and top it all off with a shake or glutenfree dessert.

Ted’s Montana Grill (tedsmontanagrill.com) also has a special menu for glutenintolerants and a knowledgeable staff that can advise on the contents of sauces and marinades. Latin flair Every once in a while it’s a drag even having to ask for a gluten-free menu. That’s why Fuego Mundo (fuegomundo. com) is such a breath of fresh air. Every entree and side at this South American grill not is gluten- and dairy-free. Pizza and pasta Mellow Mushroom (mellowmushroom. com) now offers a tasty gluten-free crust at selected locations, so call ahead. It only comes in one size (medium), but almost all of the pizzeria’s toppings are available. And it tastes as good cold as it does when it’s fresh from the oven. Buckhead Pizza Co. (buckheadpizzaco. com) is another good option; its crust is slightly heavier, but there are a variety of toppings to choose from. If you’re craving pasta, head to Saba (saba-restaurant.com), which has a selection of gluten-free appetizers, salads and pastas that come with savory sauces like lamb vindaloo and alfredo. 56 EncoreAtlantA.com
Figo (figopasta.com), with multiple locations, has a gluten-free pasta menu. Ecco (ecco-atlanta.com), which is bestknown for its flatbread pizzas, is an easy place for celiac patients to eat, as well. The waitstaff is so knowledgeable about the menu of tapas-style plates, creating a custom gluten-free meal is a breeze. And they make one of the best flourless chocolate cakes in the city. Southern cooking Two staples of Southern cooking — rice and corn — are perfectly safe for people with celiac disease. Great news, because life without grits would be a very sad thing. South City Kitchen (southcitykitchen.com), which made it OK for business people to eat grits at lunch, has a menu full of New South classics that will fill your belly without making it hurt. Mobile resources If you’d like to know more about celiac disease, visit the Celiac Disease Foundation’s website at celiac.org. “The View” co-host Elizabeth Hasselbeck has written a book about her life with the illness, The G-Free Diet (gfreediet. com), which includes tips about eating out and finding gluten-free cosmetics. A series of iPhone apps — “Is That Gluten-Free?” and “Is That GlutenFree: Eating Out” — are a handy way to know at a glance whether common items at the grocery store or fast-food restaurant are safe to consume. Continued from page 12 program called “Arts Connection” in my elementary school in Queens, N.Y., and I was one of the kids they picked. Growing up in a Latin household with all the many parties, I was always the last one on the dance floor, even as a toddler. I had already fallen in love with dancing without even knowing it.
You went to the LaGuardia High School of the Performing Arts. When did you first realize you could actually make a living as a dancer? Before I got accepted, I made a promise to myself that if I didn’t get accepted to this school that was my first and foremost goal that I had set for myself as a dancer, I would not continue with a dream that was not gonna become reality. I was very hard on myself. Then one day after the auditions, my acceptance letter came. That’s when I knew that this was my dream and nothing would get in my way. What was your experience like on “So You Think You Can Dance”? It was an experience that every dancer should go through. I became extremely aware of all my strengths and learned how to not show my weaknesses, 58 EncoreAtlantA.com
staying on my toes and always ready for anything at any time. The show helped my career and opened doors that I’d never imagined. I went straight to Broadway after the show ended, which was a dream come true for me. What can audiences expect from Burn The Floor? Burn The Floor is like nothing you have ever seen. Shows on TV only show the surface of what our art is fully about. Here you have two hours of 20 dancers, two percussionists and two vocalists showing you the real deal. Our show goes beyond the glitter, taking you through a rollercoaster ride full of sensuality, power, beauty and full-on adrenaline. We show you the connection between man and woman, and the different personalities that will have our audiences connecting to each and every one of the dancers. You will leave the theatre wanting more ... and wanting to go and dance yourself! Bret Love is the founder of GreenGlobalTravel. com; the National Managing Editor of INsite magazine; and Music Editor for Georgia Music Magazine. He freelances for many publications, and performs on numerous improv teams with Jackpie at Relapse Theatre.

What do you think it was about the art form that attracted you? Dancing to me is more than just an art form. My family and I went thru a lot of hardships coming from a completely different country and trying to survive on our own. Dance to me was an escape, a savior, a nurturer. It kept me safe. All my sweat, happiness, tears, fears and strength went into it.
