On My Mind
By Kathy Janich
Yes, she flies. But that was
hardly an obstacle in moving Mary Poppins from the big screen to the Broadway stage. Musical theater heroines 8 EncoreAtlantA.com
have, after all, been aloft since Mary Martin chased after Peter Pan’s shadow. The bigger question: How to capture in some way, shape or form the animation and Technicolor that are so integral to the iconic 1964 feature film. The answer, according to director Cameron Mackintosh: choreography. In writing about the stage adaptation, Mackintosh says, it “was never going to be either possible or desirable to put on stage the film’s brilliant and innovative mix of live action and animation.” The goal, then, became “a show both familiar and surprising that would merge the best of the books and the film into something new.”
©Disney/CML—Joan Marcus
Onstage, Mary Poppins finds a style of animation all its own
For inspiration, Mackintosh looked to P.L. Travers’ five Mary Poppins novels for children, which the Australian author began publishing in 1934. “Peppered through her stories and conversation were references to dance, which is the perfect theatrical form to deliver all the magical journeys outside Cherry Tree Lane,” Mackintosh explains. The solution seems to have gone down like, well, a spoonful of sugar. Broadway’s Mary Poppins is more than three years into its run. This tour is well into its fifth month, with more than a dozen cities yet to come. Tour dance captain Troy Edward Bowles says there are other important elements
that bring the vibrancy of the movie to the stage: the dozens of hand-painted costumes and myriad quick changes that keep the large ensemble hopping. (Watch especially, he says, for the chalkpavement-picture scene in which Mary, Bert, Michael and Jane pop into a new world. Watch, too, he advises, for a quick nod to the movie’s penguin waiters.) It takes a lot of people to get — and keep — all that action spit-spot. It began with the Broadway creative team, which featured a choreographic quintet led by noted contemporary dance maker Matthew Bourne (also credited as co-director), and included a co-choreographer, an associate choreographer, a resident choreographer and, traveling with each company, a dance captain — in this case, Bowles. He’s responsible for maintaining the look and integrity of the choreography, for training and rehearsing new company members, for holding understudy rehearsals and for the day-to-day upkeep of everything choreographic. Bowles, a Utah native who came up in ballet and made his Broadway debut in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang in 2005, is also a swing player. That means he goes on when another company member is sick, injured or on vacation. He can be Atlanta’s Performing Arts Publication 9
In the first Poppins book, Bert was a match-man (selling matches) when it rained and a sidewalk artist when the sun shone. The chimney sweep was a minor character in the second book. It was Walt Disney’s idea to add sweep to the list of Bert’s talents. The notion of kite-flying and the song “Let’s Go Fly a Kite” is the invention of the movie’s original musical team, brothers Richard and Robert Sherman. Their father was a great maker of kites, fashioning and flying them with his sons and their friends.
offstage for a month, go on once in a while or, as has happened more recently, perform for weeks at a time. Bowles describes Mary Poppins as “highly choreographed.” Not only does it have six major dance numbers but also smaller choreographed moments from beginning to end. In the prologue, for example, with the entire company onstage, Bert talks about the changing winds. Each ensemble member sways subtly, “dancing” the words that Bert speaks. There is, Bowles says, a sense of movement in every scene. And even more movement behind the scenes. “It’s amazing to think about 10 EncoreAtlantA.com
what happens [backstage],” Bowles says. “People don’t see the rush of clothes being thrown everywhere and makeup being tossed on in a matter of seconds.” In the “Jolly Holiday” scene that follows the sidewalk chalk picturepopping, ensemble members change costumes constantly to replicate as closely as possible what we’ve all seen in the movie. “It took many rehearsals to get those costume changes down,” Bowles says. “It’s the first rehearsal we do in every city we go to.” The focus on movement isn’t the only departure from the movie. The play sounds different, too. The movie featured 17 songs; the stage musical has 30. Gone are such favorites as “Sister Suffragette” and “I Love to Laugh.” New, by the team of Anthony Drewes and George Stiles, are “Cherry Tree Lane,” “Practically Perfect” and “Being Mrs. Banks,” among others. Kathy Janich is an Atlanta theater artist and freelance writer. After years in daily newspapers, she’s found a joyous second career as an artistic associate at both Synchronicity Theatre and 7 Stages.

Larry-Douglas Embury: The man behind Mighty Mo By Kristi Casey Sanders
I
Prior to his appointment as resident organist in 2001, Embury says Mighty Mo only was played for summer film series singalongs. Now, he says, “I open for the majority of the shows. ... I end 15 minutes before the show starts, so the orchestra has time to tune up, and I usually start when the house opens.” Embury prefers not to use a set list of songs for his concerts. Instead, he likes to spotlight music from upcoming shows and play audience favorites.

from a 1929 Ludwig drum kit, Zildjan crash cymbal and grand piano to carillon bells, a real marimba and a locomotive whistle. “They’re under wind pressure,” Embury explains. “So when I activate, say, the castanets, if you were in the chamber, you’d see the castanets look just like they were in a dancer’s hands, but they’re under wind pressure [which

“We have almost 4,000 volunteer ushers, and after nine years, [I’ve] got to know a lot of them. One likes to hear ‘Besame Mucho’ and one likes to have me play ‘Hello, Dolly!’ And I take suggestions from people who come by the rail [separating the organ from the audience]. One night a lady came by and [asked for] ‘Claire de Lune.’ It’s one of my favorites, so I played it next. I don’t have any agenda; it’s all about them.” One of the joys of what Embury calls “having the best job in the world” is getting to play such a rare, world-class instrument. “Mighty Mo has all the bells and whistles, and can handle any musical literature I throw at it, from Bach to boogie-woogie, rock ’n’ roll, Broadway, gospel, hymns, countrywestern and scores for ballet.” Part of what makes the instrument so flexible is that its keyboard and stops are connected to a whole gallery of musical instruments hidden behind the faux opera boxes on either side of the stage. Mighty Mo’s catalogue of sounds range
Keep in mind that Embury doesn’t only play the Fox or Mighty Mo. Among his illustrious credits are engagements as a pianist with the Desilu Orchestra (of “I Love Lucy” fame), assisting pianist/conductor José Iturbi and playing a command performance for Pope John Paul II (the Baldwin concert grand piano from that concert emblazoned with the papal seal now resides in Embury’s home). When he’s not at the Fox, Embury plays improvisational jazz, church organ, concert and cabaret piano at venues around town. If you’d like to engage him for a special event, e-mail him at larryd@duoarts.com.
makes them] ‘speak.’” Embury says that when he plays, he must think like an arranger, deciding whether and when to introduce brass instruments, strings, percussion and sound effects into the musical score of each song he plays. And he loves surprising the audience with songs they wouldn’t expect to hear from such an august instrument. For last year’s Coca-Cola Summer Film Festival, the Robert Downey Jr. movie Iron Man was scheduled, so Embury learned how to play the Ozzy Ozborne/Black Sabbath song “Iron Man” on the organ. “When I played it, the audience was up for grabs,” he laughs. “But that’s what it’s all about. We have an intergenerational audience — we have grandparents come to see the shows with their grandkids and everything in between.” Perhaps what Embury enjoys most is playing for the children who come to the Fox. “The first time I ever saw a theater organ was in the Orpheum Theatre in Vancouver ... when I was a little kid of five, and it really did something to me. So I think, ‘There’s a little Larry standing there,’ when I play and see their eyes as big as saucers. It’s exciting for adults to see that big behemoth [Mighty Mo] rising up out of the orchestra pit, so I know it must be exciting for little kids to see it.” If children (or adults) are interested in learning how to play the theater organ, Embury says there are two wonderful organizations with chapters in Atlanta they should contact: The American 16 EncoreAtlantA.com

Child Life Zone at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Scottish Rite.
Healthy habits for healthy families F
our in 10 Georgians believe that one of the leading childhood health issues in the state is childhood obesity, according to a new survey from Georgia Children’s Health Alliance (GCHA). While most people believe childhood obesity is a serious problem, the statistics remain high, putting record numbers of obese children at risk for debilitating health problems. Once a disease of older adults, type 2 diabetes is one of the chronic illnesses that is increasingly being diagnosed in overweight children and adolescents. Additionally, childhood diagnoses of high blood pressure, sleep apnea and asthma have soared over the past 10 years.

These health risks can be minimized with changes in lifestyle. For families absorbed in school, work and extracurricular activities, the idea of a major lifestyle change can be overwhelming, but a simple reevaluation of exercise and eating habits can go a long way in getting the whole family on the road to a healthy future. Encouraging children to consume healthy foods and sustain an active lifestyle does not have to become a household power-struggle. The key for parents in setting the proper structure is to follow the three “P’s.” Planning, preparing and providing healthy meals and snacks for the family will ensure the right foods are being consumed.

Healthy tips: • Plan the times you will have snacks at home. • Plan the foods you will provide as snacks. • Think in colors — add fruits and vegetables in a variety of colors. • Think in textures — smooth, crunchy or chewy. • Think finger food sizes. • Think of adding low-fat milk or water to drink.
— sleep. Research from the University of Michigan shows that every additional hour per night a third-grader spends sleeping reduces the child’s risk of being obese by 40 percent. The results give parents one more reason to impose bed times and restrict caffeine in the evening. Once parents can teach their children the benefits of making healthy lifestyle choices in terms of nutrition and physical activity, the whole family can reap the benefits. Cristina Caro is a program coordinator for Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, which focuses on promoting healthful habits in children and their families. Understanding what to eat is only half the battle. Kids often don’t know when they’ve had enough. Snacking in front of the television or rushing through a meal to get back to their favorite video game are distractions that keep kids from listening to their bodies. Teaching children to listen to their personalized hunger/fullness scale, the body’s signals that ask for nourishment, will help them decide how hungry they are before a meal and how full they are during the meal. Once they can stay in tune with these indicators, children will know when to stop eating. In addition to eating healthy, physical activity needs to be addressed, especially during the busy holiday season and cold winter months. Fewer organized sports during the winter means less opportunity for structured exercise. For children, this means the most exercise they’ll be engaged in is typing on the computer or speeding through channels on TV. With a recent study published in the American Journal of Preventative Medicine finding a link between hypertension and watching television, it has become abundantly clear that sedentary behaviors could lead to major problems. While staying active is a key ingredient to ensuring a healthy future for children, there is at least one sedentary activity that should remain a regular part of the day

creativity and enhance their appreciation for the arts. In addition to attending a Broadway show at The Fox, campers will create an original skit and perform various songs and dances from select Broadway shows in a final presentation. For more information, visit foxtheatre. org/outreach1_campBroadway or call 404-881-2087. Ailey Camp For one month each summer, the Fox Theatre also hosts the only AileyCamp* in the South. Founded in 1989 by Alvin Ailey and the Kansas City Friends of Alvin Ailey, the camp is a nationally acclaimed dance program for youth. Unlike other Ailey programs, AileyCamp isn’t a training ground for professionals dancers. Instead, the camp uses dance as a way of developing self-esteem, self-discipline, creative expression and critical-thinking skills among inner-city junior high school students. Varied dance instruction is combined with personal development classes that focus on nutrition counseling, conflict resolution, drug abuse prevention, decision-making and goal setting. *Note: There are no spaces available for Ailey Camp 2010. However, for more information, or to get an early start for next year, visit foxtheatre. org/outreach1_campAiley.

GOLDEN RULES The following brief, but important article has been published to assist in audience etiquette. To this day we get at least one phone call a week asking for reprint rights. These calls and letters come from orchestras and theaters, opera and ballet companies all over the United States and Canada, big and little troupes alike. The message, telegraphed between the lines, seems to be an S.O.S.: American audiences are out of control. Are they? Here’s a refresher course. Please read on, and remember, part of one’s pact as an audience member is to take seriously the pleasure of others, a responsibility fulfilled by quietly attentive (or silently inattentive) and selfcontained behavior. After all, you can be as demonstrative as you want during bows and curtain calls. 1. Go easy with the atomizer; many people are highly allergic to perfume and cologne. 2. If you bring a child, make sure etiquette is part of the experience. Children love learning new things. 3. Unwrap all candies and cough drops before the curtain goes up or the concert begins. 4. Make sure cell phones, beepers, and watch alarms are OFF. And don't jangle the bangles. 5. The overture is part of the performance. Please cease talking at this point. 6. Note to lovebirds: When you lean your heads together, you block the view of the person behind you. Leaning forward also blocks the view. 7. THOU SHALT NOT TALK, or hum, or sing along, or beat time with a body part. 8. Force yourself to wait for a pause or intermission before rifling through a purse, backpack or shopping bag. 9. Yes, the parking lot gets busy and public transportation is tricky, but leaving while the show is in progress is discourteous. 10. Honor the old standby: Do unto others, as you would have them do unto you. 58 EncoreAtlantA.com

Journey through the blues Get better acquainted with what’s considered the only truly indigenous form of American music at the B.B. King Museum and Delta Interpretive Center. An hour and a half north of Jackson, Miss., in B.B. King’s hometown of Indianola, Miss., the museum is a living memorial that celebrates the 60+ year career of the blues ambassador himself. In addition to several exhibits chronicling various decades of King’s career, visitors can engage with several hands-on exhibits, including an interactive guitar studio, where they can make their own music. — Ashley L.
