Allan and his wife first got to know Northside during the birth of their grandchildren. Later, when Allan was diagnosed with prostate cancer, he researched treatment options and discovered that Northside is also a national leader in robotic prostatectomies. Two weeks later, he was completely healed, cancer-free and enjoying being a grandfather and husband again. You may know Northside as the place for babies, but the hospital is also the Georgia leader for prostate cancer treatment.

n 2001, 16-year-old Joanna Richardson sat amongst a cheering audience, anticipating the start of A Radio City Christmas Spectacular, featuring the iconic Radio City Rockettes in their Atlanta debut at the Fox Theatre. Richardson and McPherson share some holiday cheer with the beluga whales at the Georgia Aquarium.
According to Richardson, Radio City Christmas Spectacular, alone, requires over 100 people to bring the show to life in its various locations. “There are the performers onstage, the crew backstage and the company managers.” Plus, there is livestock on tour: two camels, one donkey and a sheep. Her favorite number is “Christmas in the New York,” which she calls “the epitome of a Rockette number.” Even though she’s been with the Rockettes for some time, Richardson is excited about the upcoming shows in Atlanta. It will be her professional Georgia debut and the first time she’s ever performed on the Fox Stage. Radio City Christmas Spectacular sparkles at the Fox Nov. 19-Dec. 6. Suehyla El-Attar is a local actor/writer. She is currently directing MacBeth at Shiloh High School. This winter, she will appear onstage at the Alliance Theatre with Tennis in Nablus.

Born in Stone Mountain, Ga., Richardson started dancing at the age of three. She studied, mostly, at her mother’s dance studio, The Dance Centre at Vista Grove, located in Decatur. “When I was little, “ says Richardson, “I always said, ‘I just want to dance.’” Only two dance companies really interested Richardson: Disney and the Rockettes. She focused her training in ballet, jazz, and tap, the three styles each company prioritized. Immediately out of high school, Richardson landed a position with Disney, dancing overseas in Japan. A few months after she finished her Disney contract (and a mere four auditions later), Richardson began kicking it with the Rockettes. She’s now been a Rockette for five years. “It is such an incredible experience,” Richardson says. “The Rockettes are such a tradition, to be a part of that legacy of women and troupe is such an honor.” She says she not only loves the abundant energy and experience of the troupe, but also the close friendships that have developed behind the scenes, providing both professional and personal support. There are a total of 200 Rockettes. (That’s 400 high-kicking legs, for those of you doing the math.) That includes the number of dancers employed by two casts based in New York City, three national and international touring companies and an arena company. But, the dancers aren’t the only legs keeping the shows moving.
A continuous
conversation Director Thomas Kail on the creation of In the Heights By Kristi Casey Sanders
T
homas Kail was an American History major at Wesleyan University when he realized that he wanted to do something completely different with his life. “Wesleyan has a very active and open student-run theater [and] I had a couple of friends who participated, so they asked me to just be around rehearsal [and] assistant-direct a show,” Kail recalls. “I then had my world turned upside down and realized that’s what I wanted to do. This wasn’t until my junior year of college, so I was a late bloomer.” In 2000, Kail formed a production company, Back House Productions, with Anthony Veneziale, Neil Stewart and John Buffalo Mailer — the same college friends who had introduced him to theater. “We all landed in New 16 EncoreAtlantA.com
York and were doing various things in the arts and realized that we wanted to find a place to go where we could continue to learn and develop and give our friends all kinds of non-paying jobs,” Kail says. That same year, Mailer and Stewart returned to Wesleyan to see a new musical by student Lin-Manuel Miranda called In the Heights. They convinced Kail and Veneziale that Back House should develop and produce the show. “I met Lin in 2002,” Kail says. “[He] came to The Drama Book Shop, where we were in residence and, as I like to say, we started a conversation that lasted until three minutes ago. It’s really been a huge part of the fabric of my life.” Although Kail was a young director, he knew how to approach writers

working on new plays. “I understood very quickly that my job was not to come in and say, ‘This is how you fix something’ [or] ‘If you don’t do this ...’” Kail says. “So when I sat down with Lin, there was nothing that had to happen, all I said was that there were some ideas I had that I wanted to bounce off him.” Among the ideas Kail had were to see what would happen if the third song, “In Washington Heights,” became an opening number and if the character of Usnavi, who was only in three scenes, was expanded. “Lin was not playing him at that point,” Kail explains. “I just told him how much I responded to that voice and this is when, I think, we started to connect, because he said that when they did the show, that’s when everybody in the audience sat up, when he could tell people were leaning forward in their chairs.” Lin took Kail’s suggestions and Usnavi became a central character. Once In the Heights started rehearsals, the character of Usnavi proved difficult to cast. Until they were able to find a suitable actor, Lin played the role in rehearsals. “And as Lin likes to say, ‘The part grew and grew,’ and he remained in it up through Broadway and beyond,” Kail laughs.
Kail says that Lin wrote at least 10 different versions of In the Heights and at least 70 or 80 songs for the show. Along the way, songs were discarded, characters got cut and an untold number of scenes were removed. “We like to say that this is the most current version; the one that we had to stop working on so we could open.” When In the Heights did open on March 9, 2008, its blend of hip-hop, salsa, merengue and soul music numbers wowed audiences and Tony Award voters. It was nominated for 13 Tony Awards and took home four, including Best Musical, Best Original Score, Best Choreography and Best Orchestration. The cast recording won a Grammy Award for Best Musical Show Album. “There’s certainly something about the story that resonates with audiences,” Kail says. “In the Heights is the story of first and second generation immigrants, and so many of us come from that — no matter what island we came from or what state we were born in — I think that’s something that people can really relate to.” In the Heights plays the Fox Theatre Nov. 3-8. GOLDEN RULES The following brief, but important article has been published to assist in audience etiquette. To this day we get at least one phone call a week asking for reprint rights. These calls and letters come from orchestras and theaters, opera and ballet companies all over the United States and Canada, big and little troupes alike. The message, telegraphed between the lines, seems to be an S.O.S.: American audiences are out of control. Are they? Here’s a refresher course. Please read on, and remember, part of one’s pact as an audience member is to take seriously the pleasure of others, a responsibility fulfilled by quietly attentive (or silently inattentive) and selfcontained behavior. After all, you can be as demonstrative as you want during bows and curtain calls. 1. Go easy with the atomizer; many people are highly allergic to perfume and cologne. 2. If you bring a child, make sure etiquette is part of the experience. Children love learning new things. 3. Unwrap all candies and cough drops before the curtain goes up or the concert begins. 4. Make sure cell phones, beepers, and watch alarms are OFF. And don't jangle the bangles. 5. The overture is part of the performance. Please cease talking at this point. 6. Note to lovebirds: When you lean your heads together, you block the view of the person behind you. Leaning forward also blocks the view. 7. THOU SHALT NOT TALK, or hum, or sing along, or beat time with a body part. 8. Force yourself to wait for a pause or intermission before rifling through a purse, backpack or shopping bag. 9. Yes, the parking lot gets busy and public transportation is tricky, but leaving while the show is in progress is discourteous. 10. Honor the old standby: Do unto others, as you would have them do unto you.

T
he allure of Orlando’s family friendly attractions such as Walt Disney World, SeaWorld and Universal Studios are undeniable, but beyond the theme parks, the city has much to offer visitors, especially those looking for art and culture. Next time you find yourself in town, check out these local treasures. ART In the late 1800s, Louis Comfort Tiffany embarked on a career as an interior decorator, using art glass inspired by techniques that were thousands of years old. He approached the creation of his glass works as a painter, melting raw materials with metallic oxides to create vivid colors, carefully working the hot glass to give it texture and creating a leaded “cartoon” as a blueprint to fit the pieces into. Bestknown for his Tiffany lamps and stained48 ENCOREATLANTA.COM
glass windows, Tiffany and his workshop also created furniture, ceramics, metalwork and jewelry — which he created for Tiffany & Co. (he became its art director after the death of his father, the company’s founder). The largest comprehensive collection of Tiffany’s work is on display at the Charles Hosmer Morse Museum of American Art in Winter Park. Don’t miss the chapel Tiffany created for the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago. From November through April, admission on Fridays is free from 4 to 8 p.m.; otherwise it’s $3 for adults and $1 for students. morsemuseum.org Also in Winter Park is the Albin Polasek Museum and Sculpture Gardens. There are also signature nutcrackers depicting the four main characters from the Nutcracker ballet, poised brass ballerina figurines and classy stationery for adults. atlantaballet.com 56 ENCOREATLANTA.COM
They may not be located in Atlanta, but Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater (AAADT) does return every year. If your children have been captivated by their dancing, purchase an Alvin Ailey Barbie Doll for them to play with. Designed by AAADT Artistic Director Judith Jamison, the doll is part of the Barbie Collector Pink Label. Dance lovers and doll collectors will appreciate the attention to detail, which captures the beauty and grace of the AAADT dancers. The fully posable doll features a pivotal body with 12 points of movement, rooted eyelashes and wears the white costume from the “Wade in the Water” segment of Revelations. aileyboutique.com

When Ford Smith paints a tree, he does more than create a landscape, he creates a textural world that seems to hum with color. His brilliant abstract oil paintings and limited-edition giclées are on display at Ford Smith Fine Art, in the heart of Historic Roswell. Currently on exhibit is “Out of Bounds,” a series of new mixed media landscapes along with self-portrait, conceptual and abstract paintings from Smith’s personal collection. — Kristi Casey Sanders Check it out: 10 Elizabeth Way, Roswell; 770-552-5942; fordsmithfineart.com. 58 EncoreAtlantA.com
