Dawn was diagnosed with breast cancer when she was 11 weeks pregnant. After speaking to doctors at other national facilities, she was advised to stay at Northside Hospital because of the expert cancer and maternity care. Dawn underwent chemotherapy while she was pregnant, and gave birth to a healthy baby boy. You may know Northside as the place for babies, but the hospital also is No. 1 in Georgia for diagnosing and treating cancer.

There’s no business like snow business A look at the man behind White Christmas “God Bless America.” “Easter Parade.” “White Christmas.” And my personal favorite, “Oh, How I Hate to Get Up in the Morning.” It’s pretty safe to say that Irving Berlin, the tunesmith behind White Christmas, is America’s songwriter. He’s got a melody for every occasion and then some. It’s a funny turn of fate, perhaps, or a prototypical American story: This most American of composers was a 8 EncoreAtlantA.com
Jewish immigrant, born Israel Baline, who came of age in the tenements of New York’s Lower East Side and broke into show business as a singing waiter while still a teenager. As composer and colleague Jerome Kern once said, “Irving Berlin has no place in American music. He is American music.” Heady stuff for a guy who had only two years of formal schooling and never learned to read or write music.

that’s in its fifth season, according to choreographer Randy Skinner, who’s been with the project since its beginning and earned Tony Award and Drama Desk nominations for his work. The show played Broadway the past two holiday seasons but won’t powder the Great White Way this year as producers reshape it for quick stops on the road. After previewing in Chattanooga and debuting in Atlanta, it will be seen only in Greenville, S.C.; Hartford, Conn.; Schenectady, N.Y., Tampa; Charlotte; and Chicago – an itinerary likely to include some snow. The stage musical is mostly faithful to the movie. It’s still the tale of a couple of Army buddies turned song-and-dance men who meet up with a sister act to make sparks fly. There are two major differences onstage, however: The score has been plumped with the addition of many Berlin standards, and it has been infused with dance.
Tanner Photography
Irving Berlin (1888-1989) wrote a century’s worth of music — more than 900 songs, 19 musicals and 18 movie scores. One of those movies, 1942’s Holiday Inn introduced the song “White Christmas.” Twelve years later that movie was reshaped around its most popular melody and released as White Christmas, starring Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye, Rosemary Clooney and VeraEllen. In some American households, it isn’t Christmas until White Christmas has been screened. The tune itself was written as a lament when Berlin was stuck in hot and sunny Los Angeles during the holiday season and longed for the brisk, white days of an East Coast Christmas. In 2004, 50 years after it hit movie theaters and 15 years after Berlin died at age 101, White Christmas became a stage musical. It premiered in San Francisco, has played extended runs all over the country and even has a British company

numbers, ballroom jazz, vaudeville, Fred-and-Ginger-type partner dances and a curtain call surprise. “I really racked my brain to leave the audience with something [that] hasn’t been seen before,” he says. “How do you build the evening, pace the show so the numbers fall at the right place?” He knows it’s tough to tinker with such an iconic movie but thinks the stage show, with its orchestrations, costumes and dances, successfully transports theatergoers back to that Vermont inn in 1954. “It’s tricky. It’s a very tricky thing to do,” says Skinner, who in his dancing days performed alongside the likes of Ann Miller, Cyd Charisse and Mickey Rooney. “I think it delivers in the way the movie does, but with even more numbers. I do think audiences walk away feeling that they’ve seen the movie onstage.” Kathy Janich is an Atlanta theater artist and freelance writer. After years in daily newspapers, she’s found a joyous second career as an artistic associate at Atlanta’s Synchronicity Theatre, synchrotheatre.com.

Gone are “Choreography,” “Mandy” and “Gee, It’s Good to Be Back in the Army.” All were cut thoughtfully and for specific reasons, Skinner says. “Mandy” because of its dated and possibly offensive references to minstrel shows and “Army” out of sensitivity to those serving in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. What audiences get instead are “Let Yourself Go,” “Blue Skies,” “I Love a Piano,” “How Deep Is the Ocean” and “I’ve Got My Love to Keep Me Warm” along with the iconic “Sisters,” “Snow” and “Count Your Blessings Instead of Sheep.” Berlin, who wrote four movies for Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, clearly understood dancing, Skinner says. He was among the first composers to play with syncopation, and many of his songs have “dance” in the title or deal with some form of dancing in the lyrics, not the least of which is “The Best Things Happen While You’re Dancing” in White Christmas. So Skinner, who began his choreography career assisting the great Gower Champion on the original 42nd Street, gives us big tap production

In the fall of 2000, he returned to Atlanta to become the managing director of Theater of the Stars. In 2008, he assumed the role of president. Mr. Manos has been heavily involved with the touring aspect of the company and has been the driving force behind many of the artistic and cultural marvels brought to the Theater of the Stars stage, including the world professional premiere of Disney's High School Musical, the co-productions of Deaf West’s Big River, The King And I with Sandy Duncan, Bombay Dreams and the newly re-imagined version of Les Misérables. Mr. Manos is the founder of the Junior Theatre Festival, an event that takes place every January in Atlanta, and brings students from all over the world together to perform, learn and celebrate theater. Mr. Manos and his wife, Laura, have been blessed with three children, Andy, Kate and Sam, and one crazy dog, Peach.

GOLDEN RULES The following brief, but important, article has been published to assist in audience etiquette. To this day we get at least one phone call a week asking for reprint rights. These calls and letters come from orchestras and theatres, opera and ballet companies all over the United States and Canada, big and little troupes alike. The message, telegraphed between the lines, seems to be an S.O.S.: American audiences are out of control. Are they? Here’s a refresher course. Please read on, and remember, part of one’s pact as an audience member is to take seriously the pleasure of others, a responsibility fulfilled by quietly attentive (or silently inattentive) and selfcontained behavior. After all, you can be as demonstrative as you want during bows and curtain calls. 1. Go easy with the atomizer; many people are highly allergic to perfume and cologne. 2. If you bring a child, make sure etiquette is part of the experience. Children love learning new things. 3. Unwrap all candies and cough drops before the curtain goes up or the concert begins. 4. Make sure cell phones, beepers, and watch alarms are OFF. And don't jangle the bangles. 5. The overture is part of the performance. Please cease talking at this point. 6. Note to lovebirds: When you lean your heads together, you block the view of the person behind you. Leaning forward also blocks the view. 7. THOU SHALT NOT TALK, or hum, or sing along, or beat time with a body part. 8. Force yourself to wait for a pause or intermission before rifling through a purse, backpack, or shopping bag. 9. Yes, the parking lot gets busy and public transportation is tricky, but leaving while the show is in progress is discourteous. 10. Honor the old standby: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.

BBC Symphony Orchestra
Since its founding in 1930, the BBC Symphony Orchestra has been dedicated to performing 20th century and contemporary music. Its home base is the Barbican Centre in London, and its concert orchestra will be stopping in Atlanta as part of a U.S. Tour. With Keith Lockhart conducting, the concert agenda features music from great 20th century Russian composers Prokofiev, Stravinsky and Rachmaninov, as well as the Balakirev Overture on Three Russian Folk Songs. The Delta International Series will continue next spring with Tango Buenos Aires Fire and Passion on Feb. 28, the Russian National Ballet Theatre’s Chopiniana and Romeo & Juliet on March 28, and Omar Faruk Tekbilek on May 10. Visit foxtheatre.org for more information.
CAMI
very year, the Fox Theatre Delta International Series brings a full schedule of special performances from world-renowned dance companies, theatres and symphony orchestras. This year is no exception. From the folkloric dance of the Philippines and the passion of the Argentine Tango to the classical musings of Russia’s national ballet and Britain’s contemporary orchestra, the 2010-2011 season is an exciting one. It all begins this month with two special performances: Bayanihan, the National Folk Dance Company of the Philippines, on Nov. 9 and the BBC Concert Orchestra on Nov. 15. Bayanihan is Filipino for “patriotism, or love of country.” And the dance company uses Filipino history and national pride as a guidepost as it translates traditional folk dances for the modern stage. The goal is to communicate to the audience what “Filipino” is through dance, music, percussion, dress and action. Because of this ability, each member of the Bayanihan troupe is considered a national hero, or “bayani.”

Anthony Bourdain A Q&A with the bad boy of food TV By Bret Love
You have an edgy sensibility that separates you from other celebrity chefs. Where does that come from? My success came very late. I was in my forties, and I’d spent my adult life 52 EncoreAtlantA.com
working in NYC kitchens, so by the time I made it to TV it was too late to change. I’d love to sell out and be a happy, insincere bobblehead — I’d probably make a lot more money — but I can’t. (Laughs.) I have to look at myself in the mirror every morning. Was there ever a time when you seriously considered becoming something other than a chef? No. I was saved by the restaurant business. I was full of rage at the world. I didn’t respect myself or others. If I had a career trajectory, it was towards petty criminality. The restaurant business was the first time I went home feeling proud of myself, and caring about what others thought of me. From the time I fell into it at 17, that was what I wanted to do. What makes “No Reservations” different in your eyes from any other travel or food-related show on TV? It’s not one of those hotel channel shows where everything is great and nothing hurts. Because I wrote such an

veteran of the restaurant world, Anthony Bourdain was largely unknown until the publication of his 1999 New Yorker exposé, Don’t Eat Before Reading This, which formed the basis for his best-selling book, Kitchen Confidential: Adventures in the Culinary Underbelly. Bourdain has since emerged as the bad boy rock star of the foodie world, releasing critically acclaimed books and exploring the culinary globe as the host of the Travel Channel’s “No Reservations.” Now Bourdain is taking his show on the road, coming to the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre this month to regale audiences with stories of his travels. We recently caught up with the New York City native to discuss his rebellious past, blessed present and goals for the future.

Are there any destinations you’ve visited that stand out? So many! I’m living a life that most people only dream of. Indonesia, Malaysia, China, Vietnam, Ghana, Brazil, Spain ... these are magical places for me, and I’ve been incredibly fortunate to go there, particularly given how hard the first 30 years of my working life were. You’ve become a lot of things: a worldrenowned chef, critically acclaimed author, world-traveling TV host, husband and father. How do you maintain balance without burning out? 54 EncoreAtlantA.com
The first rule of running a really good restaurant kitchen is not screwing up, but beyond that I’m just making it up as I go along. I never anticipated any of this and never really had a plan. It’s just been a matter of, when opportunities present themselves, making good decisions and working through the bad decisions. It’s not about balance, it’s about taking it day by day, staying true to yourself, realizing what you’re good at and incapable of, and trying not to make stupid moves. Do you have any specific plans or goals for the next 50 years? I’d like to wear shoes as little as possible. In fact, the same goes for pants. Beyond that, I just want to keep doing what I’m doing. over-testosteroned, occasionally mean memoir, nobody expects me to morph into Rachel Ray. If I hate something, I can say, “This is the worst thing I’ve ever eaten! I hate this country, I hate this food and I’m having a miserable time!” I hope, given that honesty, that when I do say, “This is the greatest thing that ever happened to me,” it has a certain gravitas to it. Honesty is in short supply in TV, and I’m lucky enough to be honest.

Something old... In the past, it wasn’t uncommon for multiple brides to wear the same dress. But as recently as few years ago, women rarely blinked at paying thousands of dollars for a gown they’d wear only once. Now that the economy’s stalled, some brides are starting to question this “disposable” attitude. Enter RecycledBride.com, a free marketplace for new and gently used wedding items, where the affianced can get shoes, jewelry, veils, decor and dresses for up to 90 percent off the retail price. And after the big day, they can list those items for resale fee-free. — Kristi Casey Sanders get shopping: RecycledBride.com.
