Welcome November is a time for giving thanks. As I begin my second season as president of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, here are just a few of the things for which I’m grateful: • Officer Mattie Pettway. I met Officer Mattie the day I arrived in Atlanta. She greeted me with a great big hug and a huge smile, and I knew I was in the right place. From her station by the Callaway Plaza door, Officer Mattie balances her responsibility to keep us safe and secure with her instinct to make us feel welcomed and appreciated. She’s always glad to see us — and we feel the same way about her. • Our superb usher corps. Led by the incomparable Roz Massel, our ushers do more than offer a copy of the evening’s program and help us find our seats. They offer a word of welcome and a friendly smile, they handle problems and complaints, and they make the concert experience a pleasure. They do so not for cash (our ushers volunteer their time) but as an expression of their commitment to the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and to this community. • Our stage crew. Music stands, risers, and chairs don’t appear magically on the stage of Symphony Hall, nor do our lighting and sound systems operate by themselves — though our stage crew is so skilled and professional that they make it seem that way. Paul Barrett, Rick Carvlin, and Lela Huff are like black thread against black cloth: they are rarely seen, yet they hold everything together and make our concerts possible. • The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra staff. On page 54 of this booklet you’ll find the names and titles of every member of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra’s staff. Most work in windowless offices on the fourth floor of the Memorial Arts Building handling our daily business: engaging the world’s finest guest artists, securing funds to make concerts and education programs possible, crafting interesting and meaningful programs for our audiences, forging meaningful partnerships to extend and fulfill our mission. In number ours is the smallest staff of any major American orchestra. What we lack in bodies we make up for in quality: our staff is the best in the business. • The support of this community. My family and I arrived in Atlanta just over a year ago. Individually and collectively, you have been unbelievably generous in sharing your passion for the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra with us. You have welcomed us into your homes and into your lives. You have joined us in telling the story of the difference the Atlanta Symphony is making in our community. Robert Spano music Director

M

usic Director Robert Spano, currently in his 11th season as music director of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, is recognized internationally as one of the most imaginative conductors today. Since 2001, he has invigorated and expanded the Orchestra’s repertoire while elevating the ensemble to new levels of international prominence and acclaim.

Under Mr. Spano’s artistic leadership, the Orchestra and its audiences have together explored a creative mix of programming, including Theater of a Concert performances, which explore different formats, settings, and enhancements for the musical performance experience, such as the first concert-staged performances of John Adams’s Doctor Atomic in November 2008 and the production of Puccini’s Madama Butterfly in June 2011. The Atlanta School of Composers reflects Mr. Spano’s commitment to nurturing and championing music through multi-year partnerships defining a new generation of American composers, including Osvaldo Golijov, Jennifer Higdon, Christopher Theofanidis, Michael Gandolfi, and Adam Schoenberg. Since the beginning of his tenure (to date), Mr. Spano and the Orchestra have performed more than 100 concerts containing contemporary works (composed since 1950).

Mr. Spano has a discography with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra of 19 recordings, six of which have been honored with Grammy® awards. He has led the Orchestra’s performances at Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center, as well as the Ravinia, Ojai, and Savannah Music Festivals. Mr. Spano has led the New York and Los Angeles philharmonics, San Francisco, Boston, Cleveland, Chicago and Philadelphia symphony orchestras, as well as Orchestra Filarmonica della Scala, BBC Symphony and Amsterdam’s Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. In addition, he has conducted for Covent Garden, Welsh National Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago, Houston Grand Opera, and the 2005 and 2009 Seattle Opera Ring cycles. Mr. Spano was Musical America’s 2008 Conductor of the Year. In March 2010, Mr. Spano began a three-year tenure as Emory University’s distinguished artist-in-residence, in which he leads intensive seminars, lectures, and presents programs on science, math, philosophy, literature and musicology. In March 2011, Mr. Spano was announced as the incoming music director of the Aspen Music Festival. He was in residence in Aspen for the 2011 summer season as music director-designate and will assume the full role of music director in 2012.

HANDEL’S MESSIAH Thursday, December 1, at 8 pm Saturday, December 3, at 8 pm

Director of Choruses Norman Mackenzie and the Chamber Chorus give voice to “Hallelujah” and the Christmas portion of Handel’s Messiah — a work that vividly captures the transcendence of the holidays as no other work does — and Bach’s treasured touchstone, Magnificat. Composed in 1741, with lyrics from the King James Bible and the Book Of Common Prayer, Messiah wasn’t what you’d call a breakout hit after its London premiere. But in the ensuing 270 years, it has emerged as one of the most frequently performed choral works in music history. J.S. Bach composed the Magnificat (based on the canticle of Mary as told in the Gospel of Luke) in 1723 for Christmas Vespers in Leipzig. program Notes on the Program By Ken Meltzer The Building of the House Overture, Opus 79 (1967) Benjamin Britten was born in Lowestoft, England, on November 22, 1913, and died in Aldeburgh, England, on December 4, 1976. The first performance of The Building of the House Overture took place in the Maltings Concert Hall, Snape, England, on June 2, 1967, with the composer conducting East Anglian choirs and English Chamber Orchestra. The Building of the House Overture is scored for two flutes, two oboes, two clarinets, two bassoons, two horns, two trumpets, tuba, timpani, orchestra bells, snare drum, suspended cymbal, triangle, xylophone, strings and mixed chorus (chorus can be replaced or added to by an organ or by extra brass). Approximate performance time is six minutes. These are the First ASO Classical Subscription Performances.

n 1948, English composer Benjamin Britten and his life partner, tenor Peter Pears, along with writer Eric Crozier, founded the Aldeburgh Festival. Located in the Suffolk town where Britten and Pears settled, the Aldeburgh Festival soon became an international center of extraordinary musical creativity.

Festival performances at first took place in local churches and halls. In 1967, Britten and Pears created a magnificent 832-seat concert hall, located in Snape, five miles outside of Aldeburgh. The inaugural concert of the Maltings Concert Hall, Snape, took place on June 2, 1967, the opening of the 20th Aldeburgh Festival. Queen Elizabeth II was in attendance, her entry into the Hall celebrated by a brass fanfare from Britten’s opera Gloriana (based upon the life of Elizabeth I). Britten then led his own arrangement of the National Anthem. The concert program opened with a work Britten composed especially for the occasion, The Building of the House Overture. Britten led his version of the Overture written for chorus and orchestra (these concerts feature the purely orchestral arrangement). After a bustling opening section, the chorus began to declaim the following text, a setting of Psalm 127, leading to the Overture’s rousing conclusion: Except the Lord the house doth make, And thereunto doth set his hand, What men do build it cannot stand: Likewise in vain men undertake Cities and holds to watch and ward, Except the Lord be their safeguard. Amen On the evening of June 7, 1969, following the opening concerts of the 22nd Aldeburgh Festival, the Maltings Concert Hall caught fire and suffered extensive damage. Nevertheless, the Hall was repaired in time for the opening of the 1970 Festival.

Concerto in A minor for Violin, Cello and Orchestra, Opus 102, “Double Concerto” (1887) Johannes Brahms was born in Hamburg, Germany, on May 7, 1833, and died in Vienna, Austria, on April 3, 1897. The first public performance of the “Double Concerto” took place in Cologne, Germany, on October 18, 1887, with Joseph Joachim, violin, and Robert Hausmann, cello, as soloists, and the composer conducting. In addition to the solo violin and cello, the Concerto is scored for two flutes, two oboes, two clarinets, two bassoons, four horns, two trumpets, timpani and strings. Approximate performance time is thirty-four minutes. First ASO Classical Subscription Performance: December 7, 1950, George Johnson, Violin, Walter Steinhaus, Cello, Henry Sopkin, Conductor. “A sinful, inexcusable game”

J

ohannes Brahms’s Concerto for Violin, Cello and Orchestra represents a significant milestone in the career of the great German composer. Not only was it Brahms’s last Concerto, but his final composition for orchestra as well. In addition to purely musical considerations, the Double Concerto played an important role in Brahms’s private life.

For some thirty years, Brahms had enjoyed a warm and productive friendship with Joseph Joachim, the brilliant Austro-Hungarian violinist and composer. Joachim was a staunch advocate of Brahms’s music, and often provided the German composer with technical advice, particularly with regard to writing for the violin. Indeed, on New Year’s Day of 1879, Joachim was the soloist in the world premiere of Brahms’s magnificent Concerto for Violin and Orchestra, Opus 77. Brahms, who conducted the Leipzig concert, dedicated the Concerto to Joachim. However, the following year, the relationship between Joachim and Brahms suffered a devastating blow. In 1880, Joachim filed for divorce from his wife, Amalie. Joachim alleged that Amalie had engaged in an adulterous relationship with Brahms’s publisher, Fritz Simrock. Brahms, devastated by this turn of events, wrote to Joachim: …But I had hoped your letter would strike a more comforting and

program optimistic note. It made me really unhappy, and I cannot get its depressing effect out of my mind. There was so much about you both to justify one’s hopes that you would have a long, happy life together. And now! It is hard to imagine that there is any really serious cause for what could it be. Unfortunately it is difficult for me to see at all clearly into the matter, except to realize that it is certainly easier for two people to separate than to come together again, just as it is probably easier to lose one’s wits than to recover them. So I will not say much or ask many questions… Nevertheless, Brahms quickly rushed to Amalie’s defense, writing her the following letter of support: … despite a thirty year friendship, despite all my love and admiration for Joachim, despite all our artistic interests which should have bound me to him, I am very careful in my association with him, quite seldom involved in extended and confidential relations with him, and would never think of wishing to live in the same city joined with him in collaborative activity … I became aware of the unfortunate character-trait with which Joachim tortures himself and others so inexcusably earlier than you did. Friendship and love I will breathe simply and freely — as I will the air. I beg to be excused when fine feeling strikes me as complicated and over-refined, when it is maintained and increased by morbidly painful excitement … only his passionate imagination is playing a sinful, inexcusable game with the best and most holy thing that fate has granted him. Amalie presented this letter as evidence on her behalf in the Joachims’ divorce proceeding, ultimately adjudicated in her favor. Joachim, furious at what he viewed as an abject betrayal, severed his friendship with Brahms.

“Brace yourself for a slight shock!” Brahms made attempts through mutual friends to effect a reconciliation with Joachim. But it was not until 1887, and the composition of the “Double Concerto,” that the wounds were healed. That year, Brahms sent a postcard informing Joachim: “I should like to send you some news of an artistic nature which I heartily hope might more or less interest you.” Joachim’s response was quick and positive: “I hope you are going to tell me about a new work, for I have read and played your latest works with real delight.” On June 24, 1887, Brahms wrote to Joachim: Brace yourself for a slight shock! Just lately I could not resist the sudden idea I had of a Concerto for Violin and Violoncello, hard as I kept trying to argue myself out of it. Above all, I beg you, sincerely and affectionately, to be absolutely frank. If you send me a postcard to say “Thank you for nothing”, I shall know what else to say to myself, and in good measure. Joachim responded that he was, of course, most interested in Brahms’s new composition. From the inception, Brahms intended that the soloists for the “Double Concerto” would be Joachim and the renowned cellist Robert Hausmann (a member of Joachim’s String Quartet). Brahms forwarded the music to Joachim and Hausmann for their review and comments. The collaborative process between composer and soloists continued through the period of rehearsals for the premiere. The first performance of the Double Concerto took place in Cologne on October 18, 1887, with Brahms as conductor, and Joachim and Hausmann as soloists. Numerous performances throughout Germany with these same artists ensued. In 1888, the score of the “Double Concerto” was published with the following dedication: “To him for whom it was written: Joseph Joachim.”

Musical Analysis I. Allegro — The Concerto opens in highly dramatic fashion with a tutti outburst that hints at the Allegro’s opening theme. The solo cello begins an extended cadenza that Brahms directs be played “in the mode of an (operatic) recitative, but always in tempo.” The winds then offer a fragment of the movement’s lovely second principal theme. Once again the orchestra pauses as the solo violin and ultimately, the cello, play another cadenza that gathers considerable momentum. Six brusque chords by the soloists lead to the orchestra’s full exposition of the opening movement’s principal thematic material. The soloists — sometimes alone, more often in tandem with each other — offer their own versions of the themes. The close interplay between the solo instruments continues in the development section, where the exchanges are often quite intimate. The opening fury of the Concerto returns with the start of the recapitulation. The coda, focusing upon the movement’s opening theme, brings the Allegro to a formidable conclusion. II. Andante — After a brief prelude by the winds, the soloists offer their unison introduction (in octaves) of the Andante’s principal theme, marked espressivo. An inversion of the theme ensues. The winds herald the next episode, featuring the soloist’s tender exchange of a dolce, triplet-based theme. The opening theme returns, again played in octaves by the soloists. The Andante concludes with echoes of both portions of the movement, capped by an enchanting, ascending passage for the soloists. III. Vivace non troppo — The solo cello immediately presents the finale’s jaunty central melody, which is then repeated by the violin (many commentators have suggested that the melody, with its decidedly Hungarian flavor, is a tribute to Joachim). The finale, combining elements of rondo and sonata forms, features continued close interplay of the soloists and an impressive wealth of thematic material. The coda begins in delicate fashion, but soon gathers momentum, as the Brahms “Double Concerto” moves to an emphatic resolution.

program Symphony in One Movement, Opus 5 (1969, rev. 2002) Oliver Knussen was born in Glasgow, Scotland, on June 12, 1952. The first performance of the original version of the Symphony in One Movement took place at the Peabody Auditorium in Daytona Beach, Florida, on August 2, 1969, with André Previn, piano, and the composer conducting the London Symphony Orchestra. The Symphony in One Movement is scored for piccolo, three flutes, two oboes, English horn, E-flat clarinet, three clarinets, bass clarinet, two bassoons, contrabassoon, four horns, two trumpets, three trombones, tuba, timpani, xylophone, clashed cymbals, suspended cymbal, Burmese gong, large tam-tam, two bongos, two tom-toms, side drum, tenor drum, tambourine, claves, glockenspiel, triangle, bass drum, hi-hat cymbal, pedal bass drum, cowbell, two temple blocks, two woodblocks, piano and strings. Approximate performance time is twenty minutes.

liver Knussen’s Symphony in One Movement is a revision of an early work, his Concerto for Orchestra (1969), commissioned for the 1969 Florida International Music Festival at Daytona Beach, Florida. On August 2 of that year at the Peabody Auditorium, Mr. Knussen conducted the London Symphony Orchestra in the Concerto for Orchestra’s world premiere. André Previn, to whom Mr. Knussen dedicated the work, was the pianist. The same performers reprised the Concerto for Orchestra at Royal Festival Hall in London on February 1, 1970.

In 2002, Mr. Knussen revised the Concerto for Orchestra into the Symphony in One Movement performed at these concerts. The first public performance of the Symphony in One Movement took place in November 2002, at the Barbican in London, with the composer conducting the BBC Symphony Orchestra. The following are from program notes by Robin Newton: Whereas the Third Symphony is constructed by and large from two three-note cells, the source material for the Symphony in One Movement is a more conventional 12-note row. As other commentators have noted, the concerto for orchestra displayed a remarkably assured grasp of serial methods and is one of the works in which Knussen can be seen to be developing an individual musical language. Knussen carefully controls the pace of the Symphony through the use of a technique known as metric modulation, derived initially from Elliott Carter. This functions by applying strict relationships to adjacent tempos — a simple example might be the crotchet (quarter-note) of one section being equal to the quaver (eighth-note) of the next — which enables small-scale polyrhythmic patterns to function over the piece as a whole as well as safeguarding the dramatic pacing of the work. Knussen’s ability to orchestrate with apparent flamboyance and spontaneity while remaining within the idiom of each instrument has often been remarked on and this work is no exception. that the orchestration of the Symphony in One Movement remains largely unchanged, it certainly carries the characteristics of Knussen’s approach to the orchestra that remain with him to the present day, in particular a fondness for choirs of a single colour which often underline polyrhythmic unfoldings. About two-thirds of the way through the piece there is a short but distinct jazz-influenced cadenza for piano. This is presumably a gesture toward André Previn, to whom the Symphony is dedicated and who played the piano part in the first performances of the work. Partly because his output is made up of many small pieces and partly because of his remarkable control of detail, Knussen is known as a miniaturist. This should not be allowed to distract from his equally dramatic command, which is on masterful display here.

Variations and Fugue on a Theme of Purcell, “The Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra,” Opus 34 (1946) Benjamin Britten was born in Lowestoft, England, on November 22, 1913, and died in Aldeburgh, England, on December 4, 1976. The first performance of “The Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra” took place on October 15, 1946, with Sir Malcolm Sargent conducting the Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra. “The Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra” is scored for piccolo, two flutes, two oboes, two clarinets, two bassoons, four horns, two trumpets, three trombones, tuba, timpani, harp, xylophone, tambourine, triangle, bass drum, gong, side drum, castanets, whip, cymbals, suspended cymbal, Chinese blocks and strings. “I

have a small film to write for the Board of Education,” Benjamin Britten informed Mary Behrend, a friend who had commissioned the composer’s Second String Quartet (1945). The educational film, commissioned by the Crown Film Unit, was designed to introduce children to the various instruments of the orchestra. Britten began composition of the work in mid-December of 1945. At the stroke of midnight, New Year’s Eve, Britten put the finishing touches on the “Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra.”

In his dedication of the score, Britten states: “This work is affectionately inscribed to the children of John and Jean Maud—Humphrey, Pamela, Caroline and Virginia, for their edification and entertainment.” Britten first met John Maud, a civil servant, and his concert pianist wife, Jean, in 1944. Britten was particularly charmed by the Mauds’ 11-year-old son Humphrey, who was a budding cellist. In the Mauds’ personal copy of the score, Britten inscribes: “For Humphrey and his sisters with much love from Ben.”

program The premiere of the educational film, entitled Instruments of the Orchestra, took place on November 29, 1946. Sir Malcolm Sargent served as conductor and narrator. During the previous month, Sargent conducted the Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra in the first concert performance of the “Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra.” Sargent also delivered the text, authored by Eric Crozier. “The Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra” proved to be a success from its inception. “I’m glad that the Min. of Ed. chaps approve,” Britten told a friend. “I never really worried that it was too sophisticated for kids—it is difficult to be that for the little blighters!” The “Young Person’s Guide” remains one of the most popular compositions of its kind — and for good reason. As with any superior educational experience, Britten’s “Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra” simultaneously informs, stimulates and entertains students (of all ages).

Musical Analysis The composer’s subtitle for the “The Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra” is Variations and Fugue on a Theme of Henry Purcell. The piece begins with a grand, tutti declaration of a melody that was originally a hornpipe, featured in British composer Henry Purcell’s (1659-95) Incidental Music to the play, Abdelazar, or The Moor’s Revenge (1695). Statements of the melody by each of the four instrument families (woodwind, brass, strings and percussion) lead to a reprise of the orchestral tutti. A series of thirteen variations follows, each designed to highlight particular instruments. The variations are succeeded by a lively fugue, with the instruments making their entrances in the same order as the preceding variations. In the grand climax, the brass majestically proclaims the original Purcell melody, while the remainder of the orchestra continues the fugue. A brief, spirited coda rounds out “The Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra.”

Oliver Knussen, Conductor

B

orn in Glasgow on June 12, 1952, Knussen grew up near London, where his father was principal double bass of the London Symphony Orchestra for many years. It was with this orchestra that he made his debut in April 1968, conducting his First Symphony in London and at Carnegie Hall in New York. In 1970, he was awarded the first of three fellowships to Tanglewood, and for the next few years, divided his time between England and the U.S. During Oliver Knussen this time he completed several works which were performed on both sides of the Atlantic and established his early reputation, notably Hums and Songs of Winnie-the-Pooh (1970), Second Symphony (Margaret Grant Prize, Tanglewood 1971), Océan de Terre (1972-3) and Ophelia Dances (Koussevitzky centennial commission, 1975). The 1980s were largely devoted to the operatic double-bill written in collaboration with Maurice Sendak and produced by Glyndebourne Festival Opera, Where the Wild Things Are (l979-83) and Higglety Pigglety Pop! From 1983 to 1998, Knussen was an artistic director of the Aldeburgh Festival and, between 1986 and 1993, he headed contemporary music activities at the Tanglewood Music Center.

david coucheron, Violin

D

avid Coucheron joined the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra as concertmaster in September 2010. Originally from Oslo, Norway, Mr. Coucheron began playing violin at the age of three. He earned his Bachelor of Music degree from The Curtis Institute of Music, his Master of Music from The Juilliard School, and his Master of Musical Performance from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Mr. Coucheron has worked with conductors such as Alan Gilbert, Michael David Coucheron Tilson Thomas, Simon Rattle, Mstislav Rostropovich, David Zinman, Roger Norrington, Simone Young and Charles Dutoit, and performed as a soloist with such orchestras as the BBC Symphony Orchestra, Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra (Maxim Vengerov conducting), Sendai Symphony Orchestra, Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra and the Trondheim Symphony Orchestra. He has played solo recitals at the Oslo Chamber Music Festival, Carnegie Hall, Wigmore Hall (London), the Kennedy Center, the Olympic Winter Games (Salt Lake City, Utah), as well as in Beograd, Serbia, and Shanghai, China. Chamber music performances include appearances at Suntory Hall, Wigmore Hall, the Oslo Chamber Music Festival and Alice Tully Hall. His recordings with sister, and pianist, Julie Coucheron, include David and Julie (Naxos/Mudi) and Debut (Naxos).

christopher rex, Cello

C

hristopher Rex joined the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra as principal cello in 1979, the same year in which he became the first cellist ever to win the string prize in the biennial Young Artists Competition of the National Federation of Music Clubs. Since then he has appeared as recitalist and chamber musician across the nation. He took up the cello at age eight, completing a family string quartet in his hometown of Winter Park, Fla. Following his studies at the Christopher Rex Curtis Institute of Music and at the Juilliard School, he was a member of the Philadelphia Orchestra under director Eugene Ormandy for seven seasons. Together with his brother Charles Rex, associate concertmaster of that orchestra, he presented a program in Carnegie’s Weill Recital Hall, at which only music that was composed by their father was performed. He is a founding member of the Georgian Chamber Players whose concerts have included such guest performers as Emanuel Ax, Andrås Schiff, Misha Dichter, Yefim Bronfman, Robert McDuffie, Lynn Harrell, Ruth Laredo and Janos Starker. He founded and is the general and artistic director of the Amelia Island Chamber Music Festival in Florida.

London and Broadway stage stars Joan Hess and Kirby Ward rekindle the golden era of top hats, tuxes, and shimmering gowns as they frolic to big band classics by Cole Porter, George Gershwin, Irving Berlin and Jerome Kern. “There are going to be lots of different styles of music and dancing going on,” says Krajewski, “from classical, ballroom, waltz and Big Band swing to various popular styles. It’s a very sophisticated, entertaining evening that we just think is the right kind of style for a New Year’s Eve concert. I enjoy giving people a real good time and a goodbye to this past year.” The evening will end at 10 pm with a traditional champagne toast in the Symphony Hall lobby, which allows the audience numerous options after the show. “They can either get themselves safely home by midnight,” Krajewski adds with a laugh, “or they can go out and party some more!” Bret Love covers the arts, entertainment, and restaurants and has his own website, GreenGlobalTravel.com.

It feels like the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra’s 2011-12 season has barely begun, yet the Orchestra’s Education and Community Engagement department is in full swing and already has added a number of new initiatives to its repertoire — and the continuous thread between all of these is the immeasurable impact these outreach efforts have in and beyond the Atlanta community. “There is something uniquely powerful about music because it has the ability to touch the very core of who we are as people,” says Senior Director of Education and Community Engagement Mark Kent. “We’re continuously trying to find new ways to reach the community and make our programs even more accessible.” The Orchestra kicked off its new initiatives in June with a special side-by-side orchestral workshop open to local student musicians

in which 52 students participated in three days of coaching sessions, rehearsals, and a culminating performance — all while sitting next to Atlanta Symphony musicians. “The side-by-side was a fantastic opportunity,” says Cassidy Goldblatt, a violinist with the Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra who participated in the workshop. “The thrill of playing with professional musicians was unlike anything I’ve ever experienced. I also learned an incredible amount.”

In August, the Atlanta Symphony collaborated with the Alliance Theatre for their season-opening production, “Into the Woods,” in which the pit orchestra was composed entirely of student musicians — a rare opportunity and tremendous learning experience for the 19 young people involved. Some of these student musicians joined the Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra this year for its 37th season. They were among 314 applicants, a significantly larger pool than in past years, who applied for approximately 120 slots in the ensemble. This year, the Youth Orchestra will work directly with Music Director Robert Spano for their March Crescendo Concert, and the student musicians also will have the opportunity to attend reading sessions with guest conductors Mei-Ann Chen and James Gaffigan and Principal Guest Conductor Donald Runnicles, and master classes with pianist Gabriela Montero and violinists Leila Josefowicz and Gil Shaham. These star-studded offerings are a new addition to the Youth Orchestra’s programming. The Orchestra’s Talent Development Program, whose graduates have gone on to pursue musical studies at the Cleveland Institute of Music, Curtis Institute of Music, Juilliard School, and New England Conservatory, among others, will continue to offer top-notch musical instruction. This year, 13 Orchestra members will serve as faculty and coaches to the 25 African American and Latino musicians in the program. But the Orchestra’s reach does not stop at budding musicians. Thousands of students will be exposed to classical music through field trips to Atlanta Symphony Hall, 50 Atlanta Symphony Orchestra/aso.org

and the Orchestra’s influence will extend beyond the Woodruff Arts Center campus through Symphony Street concerts, which bring classical music into local community venues, and numerous outreach programs in which Orchestra musicians lead master classes and residencies in local schools. Additionally, the Orchestra continues to build important partnerships throughout the community. In August, the Atlanta Symphony teamed up with the Atlanta Braves for the first Music Appreciation Night at Turner Field. The evening included an instrument petting zoo and music education panel discussion — free to all ticketholders — and the Youth Orchestra performed the National Anthem prior to the start of the game. Other collaborations include continued work with the Atlanta Music Project and the Latin American Association. Just recently, an ensemble of Orchestra musicians performed at an event celebrating the Independence of Mexico hosted by the Office of the Consulate General of Mexico and the Instituto de Mexico. The Orchestra is also deeply involved with the Georgia Humanities Council and the Smithsonian Institute for their “New Harmonies Project,” a traveling exhibit about American music. “This is only the beginning,” says Kent. “At the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, we believe every citizen deserves the opportunity to explore their world and realize their fullest potential through the power of music.
