Let it RAIN By Ashley L. Brazzel
I
Formed in the mid-1970s, the members of RAIN have been together longer than The Beatles themselves, and are still going strong.) Comprised of Joey Curatolo (Paul McCartney), Steve Landes (John Lennon), Joe Bithorn (George Harrison), Ralph Castelli (Ringo Starr) and founder/offstage keyboardist Mark Lewis, RAIN doesn’t attempt to “cover” The Beatles as many others do. But rather take their music to EncoreAtlantA.com
a higher level, performing live, note-fornote songs that even The Beatles never performed live. Like his bandmates, Curatolo doesn’t approach his role in RAIN as an ordinary cover musician. And understandably so, since he has big shoes to fill as McCartney — one of the most successful pop musicians and songwriters in history. If you believe in destiny, it’s safe to assume Curatolo was fated to play him. Even
joan marcus
f you were to wonder why anyone would want a career impersonating someone else, you’re probably not a Beatles fan. Quite possibly the most famous band to ever exist, The Beatles have numerous tribute bands paying homage to their music and likeness, but none quite as popular as RAIN.
10 EncoreAtlantA.com
“Ever since I can remember, there was a calling for me with the Beatles and it has surrounded me and my life. It’s something that is very much a part of me,” Curatolo says. “I attribute my abilities to the Beatles.” If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, RAIN should make the Beatles proud. Not many groups can do what they do, so well and for so long. All the music is performed live. There are no pre-recorded tapes or sequences. Every song they approach is studied, then practiced and performed to a level of perfection that no other group can boast. Their repertoire currently features more than 200 Beatles songs. “I have to say [the show is] not ‘put on’ night after night, because we are fans first and foremost, so for us it’s a gift,” Curatolo says. “It’s exciting to get up there and do what we love to do. … People ask us, ‘How long can you do this?’ [We respond,] ‘As long as we like.’ The music, obviously, will never die.” Get caught in the downpour, as RAIN: A Tribute to the Beatles showers the Fox Theatre, Oct. 6-11. before he joined RAIN in 1983, he sported the same haircut as McCartney and had a similar artistic sensibility. “When I was younger, I was very much a fan of The Beatles and gravitated to Paul McCartney’s style of singing and playing. Over the years, it evolved into imitating him as well as I could. My voice kind of matched his naturally, so [it’s] a natural experience for me.” So natural, in fact, that in 1976, his friends entered him into a Beatles soundalike contest without his knowing. His impression of McCartney won and caught the attention of the producer of Beatlemania, a first of its kind Broadway production. He declined the offer to join the cast, opting to complete his schooling instead. A year later, while working a summer job as a messenger, he delivered a package to the studios where Beatlemania was holding auditions. Before he could put his packages down, the production manager looked at him and assumed he was there to try out for the role of Paul. So he did. And, once again, won the part. This time he accepted, and shortly after was sent to Los Angeles for the show. He performed with the cast until 1981.

bios STEVE LANDES (Vocals, rhythm guitar, piano, harmonica) With a singing voice dead-on to the young John Lennon, the precocious Steve taught himself guitar at age 10, listening to Beatles records and by 13, was fronting a Top-40 cover band in his native Philadelphia. At 17 year old, he joined the successful Broadway musical Beatlemania and further developed his musicianship. Steve later honed his acting skills in an off-Broadway showcase of The Fab Four. Once he joined RAIN in 1998, he knew this is where he was supposed to be. On one of his travels to England, he found himself at Liverpool’s Casbah Club, owned by pre-Ringo Beatles drummer Pete Best. Encouraged to get on stage, Steve belted out the rocker “Slow Down,” in which Lennon sang lead on a 1965 Beatles record. Best cited the performance at a Beatles convention, saying “it helped make for one of the best nights ever at the Casbah.” In August 2007, Steve and RAIN performed in Liverpool as part of Liverpool’s 800th birthday celebration — at both the Empire Theatre (where The Beatles played seven times) and The Cavern Club. JOEY CURATOLO (Vocals, bass, piano, guitar) Joey grew up in a Brooklyn household where classical music and opera formed the soundtrack. A natural musician and singer, he was infatuated with The Beatles when they hit America. Joey taught himself guitar at 10 years old, could play piano by ear, and at 16, was moonlighting in a traveling Top-40 cover band. At 17, friends entered Joey into a McCartney sound-alike contest at a Beatle festival. Without preparation, he won and caught the eye of a producer for the Broadway production of Beatlemania. Joey ended up in the West Coast version. He joined RAIN in 1983 — helping propel the band into a class by itself. Today, his vocals, bass, piano and guitar 18 EncoreAtlantA.com
playing remain as powerful as ever. When Universal Pictures needed a McCartney sound, they contacted Joey to record the song “Love Take Me Down” for the comedy film Role Models. JOE BITHORN (Vocals, lead guitar) George Harrison portrayer Joe grew up on the same Manhattan block where jazz genius Thelonious Monk resided. Steeped in classical music and jazz, young Joe dabbled in many genres when teaching himself acoustic guitar. Smitten by The Beatles, at 9 years old he switched to electric guitar and, by 13, was famous in his neighborhood. By age 16, he was a studio session musician. He joined a national tour of Beatlemania, mastering Harrison’s guitar parts within a one-week period and the scouse accent on the job. Joe passed the RAIN audition by playing both lead guitar parts from “And Your Bird Can Sing” simultaneously, which Harrison and McCartney played in the studio. In RAIN he manages all sorts of fret-board wizardry — including replicating studio sounds with a guitar synthesizer. RALPH CASTELLI (Drums, percussion, vocals) The son of Italian immigrants, Ralph Castelli was raised in a talented musical family where the accordion, guitar and drums surrounded him. In the Castelli home in San Gabriel, Calif., a variety of musical styles from opera to Frank Sinatra, were always on the turntable. By age six, Ralph secretly pounded away on his older brother’s drum set and his Mom’s pots and pans. Music was in his blood! On that momentous night in February 1964 when The Beatles first appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show, Ralph sat in front of the TV and knew that playing drums was what he was born to do. So captivated by Ringo Starr and The Beatles that night, his excitement continued to grow and little did he know
bios at the time how his dream would become a reality. After performing and touring in numerous bands, Ralph was spotted and received the opportunity to portray Ringo in the Broadway production of Beatlemania. His drum technique, style, humor, appearance and hard work paid off. He was also lucky enough to play Starr in the film version of Beatlemania. Ralph joined RAIN in 1986. MARK LEWIS (Keyboards, percussion) The managerial and creative mind that transformed RAIN from a 1970s southern California bar band doing Beatles covers into an ultra-professional act with the best musicians in the world, offstage keyboardist Mark traces his love of the Fab Four to the Sunday night of Feb. 9, 1964, when his generation was smitten by The Beatles appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show. An accomplished pianist at age 13, having studied since 5 years old, Mark was soon playing the Farfisa organ in teenage rock bands around his native Los Angeles. After college, he met two talented musicians who did Beatles covers in a bar band called Reign. Over the next five years the band gained regional fame, changed its spelling to RAIN, cut the soundtrack to the made-for-TV movie Birth of the Beatles. Mark ensures The Beatles’ studio sound is replicated in full during RAIN shows, playing piano and organ and inserting necessary sounds of The Beatles background instrumentation.

President Nelson Mandela alongside Bono, Queen, Anastacia, Peter Gabriel and others. Their voices will ring for Atlanta audiences on Feb. 25. Max Raabe and the Palast Orchester round out the series on March 7. With a repertoire centered on German and American standards, Raabe and the Orchester embody the high-style and precision of times past. In over 150 concerts each year, Raabe flexes his diverse vocal range at the forefront of the 12-member orchestra, performing pieces that eloquently sum up the German musical experience. to bring the charm of Ukrainian folk dancing to mainstream audiences. Hailed as the reigning virtuoso of violin, Itzhak Perlman has performed with every major orchestra around the world; he makes his appearance at the Fox on Oct. 27. A beloved, awardwinning artist, Perlman has been elevated to heights unbeknownst to most classical musicians. In addition to his 15 Grammy awards, he was honored with the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award for Excellence in the Recording Arts in 2008. He’s also received four Emmy awards, collaborated on the score for the Academy Award-winning Schindler’s List, for which he performed the violin solos, and regularly tops best-seller charts. In the spirit of great Russian ballet companies, the Moscow Festival Ballet forges the classical and modern elements of the art in a unique way. Founded in 1989 by Bolshoi Ballet principal dancer Sergei Radchenko, the ballet has seen great success, resulting in an expanded repertoire featuring full-length works such as Cinderella, Romeo and Juliet, The Golden Age, and more. The Moscow Festival Ballet performs Coppélia on Feb. 22. Accompanied by a four-piece band, the Soweto Gospel Choir performs in six of South Africa’s 11 languages. An exciting mix of dance, vibrant costumes and dynamic vocal styling, the choir has been praised for its ability to elevate the spirit and leave audiences stunned with emotion. In 2003, they performed for

“Swimming with sharks” is a phrase that typically conjures up images of the movie Jaws, or divers being lowered in shark tanks surrounded by bloody chum. Maybe that’s why it took my stepson a whole week to let me know whether or not he would come with me. “Why do you think Lucky’s not calling me back,” I asked my husband. “I think he’s scared,” my husband replied. “But don’t say anything.” So I didn’t. Sort of. I dropped hints about how cool it would be. I offered to talk to his mom about its safety. I convinced his dad that no one was going to die. Finally, after a lot of not saying anything, Lucky agreed to come. But he didn’t want to be quoted, photographed or filmed. He’s a boy of few words. 32 EncoreAtlantA.com

We both knew he was just playing it cool. When we entered the Georgia Aquarium’s Ocean Ballroom and saw a group of scuba divers sitting on the floor of the Ocean Voyager tank, he started to get excited, asking our guide all sorts of questions about what kind of fish and sharks were in the tank, what we’d be doing and where the aquatic animals came from. After a quick briefing in the River Scout classroom, we headed up to the dive area to suit up and learn how to use our breathing equipment. Since neither Lucky nor I are scuba-certified, we expected to snorkel our way through the tank. Instead, they gave us regulators — chest-level air tanks that allow you to breathe in and out of a mouthpiece without resurfacing. The regulators also

acted as buoys, keeping us afloat as we swam the football-sized tank in a graceful figure eight formation. We traveled through a magnificent realm without words, just weightlessness, brilliant flashes of color and muted sounds. Far below us, family members took pictures from a pedestrian tunnel and an underwater filmmaker encouraged us to smile and wave. We communed with strange animals I’d only seen through a glass — sharks, manta rays and schools of golden trevally (one of which mistook my gloved finger for a snack). The whale sharks were my and Lucky’s favorites. We had no peripheral vision, so our divemaster told us when one was coming by gesturing for us to stretch ourselves flat and stop moving. Laying still on the surface of the water, we’d feel the 40-ft. long whale sharks before we’d see them. Then they’d emerge slowly from beneath us, coming close enough to touch. I found myself holding my breath, wanting it to graze a hand, but not wishing to disturb its majestic path. The journey was over much too soon, although it did feel good to get into warm clothes. Our visit ended with a behind the scenes tour of the aquarium and a special screening of a personalized “Journey with Gentle Giants” movie. As we headed back home, neither Lucky nor I spoke much. We were too busy thinking about the magical kingdom we’d just visited. For more info or to register, visit georgia aquarium.org or call 404-581-4000.

Perhaps if Mr. Gibbon had attended the writers’ retreats and conferences hosted on Georgia’s beautiful St. Simon’s island, he’d have felt a little less resolved and a lot more inspired. Two opportunities remain for aspiring writers, no matter the age, looking to arm themselves with advice from acclaimed experts and an amazing getaway. The Inspiration Writing Workshop (Write to Inspire!), hosted at Epworth by the Sea, runs the weekend of Oct. 23-25. Holly Sullivan McClure, renowned for her thrillers and children’s mysteries, is one of several organizers of the retreat. With many workshops and conferences under her belt, McClure says retreats like these are very beneficial to budding authors of any age. “We try to teach people how to get their career started … at this point in time, it’s harder than ever to get published and be successful. There’s an awful lot of competition and lots of changes going on in the publishing industry. The better you write, [and] the more skills you have, the better your chances are.” She adds that the art of writing a book and the act of completing a novel are different skills altogether. McClure, who has been writing professionally since the ’90s, says the workshops provide instruction in getting a manuscript started, keeping it going and writing a cover letter. It doesn’t hurt, either, that the retreat is hosted at a location overlooking the Frederica River. “It’s perfect!” McClure says. “You can have your time of quiet, but then you also have enough life going on around you to keep you inspired!” 38 EncoreAtlantA.com
Elizabeth Blahnik, a published author and co-founder of the Native Atlantan’s Club, agrees. She’s also one of the organizers of Scribbler’s Retreat, which is being hosted at the Sea Palms Resort Nov. 12-15. “We like to put teachers, authors, agents, editors, in front of people who are seeking to further their writing talents and careers and have questions about … even sentence structure,” Blahnik says. “This is all done in an atmosphere, on this island, made for inspiration and learning.” The November event is the last conference of a series of four Scribbler’s hosted this year. And the success of this inaugural year has Blahnik already planning for 2010. “I really love helping people,” Blahnik says. “With this writer’s conference ... we have really hit our niche and our stride.” Feedback has encouraged the creators of Scribbler’s to continue with an uncommon writer’s conference template, providing more time for one on one, in-depth conversations. Scribbler’s also is committed to encouraging young writers by providing scholarships to high school and college level students. Younger attendees really appreciate being included in what is commonly an “adult-type” conference. A fundraiser for the non-profit organization will be held on Oct. 15. For more information or to register for the retreats, visit epworthbythesea.org or scribblersretreatwritersconference.com. Suehyla El-Attar is an actor/writer living in Atlanta, Ga. What’s your EQ? Studies have shown that having a high IQ doesn’t guarantee success, it’s your emotional intelligence that counts. Dr. Travis Bradberry, co-author of Emotional Intelligence 2.0 ($19.95), has found that people with high EQ (emotional quotient) scores tend to make more money than their low-scoring peers by an average of $29,000/year. Emotional Intelligence 2.0 helps readers identify areas in which they’re strong and where they need to improve in four areas: self-awareness, selfmanagement, social awareness and relationship management. Get smart: You can find copies of Emotional Intelligence 2.0 at local bookstores, or online at TalentSmart.com.
Nicolas D. Snider, founder of the National Museum of Patriotism, says most people think of patriotism as being something corny and old-fashioned, “but there’s so much out there about what’s wrong with America, I wanted a place where you come and see what’s right.” Interactive exhibits celebrate people who have shown moral and physical courage and won medals of honor for their achievements, our first-defenders (police, National Guard, fire fighters, etc.), our shared immigrant history, and more. You can even take a test to see if you’d pass the U.S. Naturalization Exam. The Web site features an added bonus for teachers and homeschooling parents — hundreds of free lesson plans for grades K through 12. Learn more: Open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Admission: $15 adults; $12 seniors (55+); $10 students (6-17); free for children under 6; military and group rates are available. 275 Baker St., Atlanta; 404-875-0691; museumofpatriotism.org 40 EncoreAtlantA.com

GOLDEN RULES The following brief, but important article has been published to assist in audience etiquette. To this day we get at least one phone call a week asking for reprint rights. These calls and letters come from orchestras and theaters, opera and ballet companies all over the United States and Canada, big and little troupes alike. The message, telegraphed between the lines, seems to be an S.O.S.: American audiences are out of control. Are they? Here’s a refresher course. Please read on, and remember, part of one’s pact as an audience member is to take seriously the pleasure of others, a responsibility fulfilled by quietly attentive (or silently inattentive) and selfcontained behavior. After all, you can be as demonstrative as you want during bows and curtain calls. 1. Go easy with the atomizer; many people are highly allergic to perfume and cologne. 2. If you bring a child, make sure etiquette is part of the experience. Children love learning new things. 3. Unwrap all candies and cough drops before the curtain goes up or the concert begins. 4. Make sure cell phones, beepers, and watch alarms are OFF. And don't jangle the bangles. 5. The overture is part of the performance. Please cease talking at this point. 6. Note to lovebirds: When you lean your heads together, you block the view of the person behind you. Leaning forward also blocks the view. 7. THOU SHALT NOT TALK, or hum, or sing along, or beat time with a body part. 8. Force yourself to wait for a pause or intermission before rifling through a purse, backpack or shopping bag. 9. Yes, the parking lot gets busy and public transportation is tricky, but leaving while the show is in progress is discourteous. 10. Honor the old standby: Do unto others, as you would have them do unto you. 44 EncoreAtlantA.com
