From stage to movie to stage

I

t could be argued that behind every good Dreamgirl is a not-so-good man.

Manager Marty Madison and songwriter C.C. White do have their redeeming qualities, but power hungry Curtis Taylor Jr., and soul man James “Thunder” Early are definitely steppin’ to the bad side. And seriously, where would this 1981 Broadway hit be without them?

A lot less gritty, likely, and a lot less real.

The push and pull of ego, ambition and love, of breakups, reconciliations and shifting alliances is what gives

Dreamgirls its propulsive energy.

Composer Henry Krieger says the show has the episodic appeal of a soap opera, and he means that in a positive way.

“These are people you can follow and identify with,” he says. “Real people and real raw emotions. Rejection and reuniting. It’s something [audiences] seem to say, ‘Oh yeah, I can relate [to].’ There’s a lot of, ‘That feels right, that feels true,’ and they root for different characters.”

A Lifetime of Care

After Maxine’s sister Beverly died from cancer, she and her other sister decided to undergo genetic testing at Northside Hospital to determine their risk of developing breast or ovarian cancer. Maxine’s results came back positive. With that knowledge, she was able to catch her breast cancer early. Now she’s healthy and back on track with her life. Jennifer Holliday, now 50, wowed audiences and critics as the big-voiced Effie Melody White. She first hit Broadway in 1979’s Your Arms Too Short to Box With God. She won a 1981 Tony Award for Dreamgirls but has never done another Broadway show. She does have a thriving concert career, has played Effie twice for Atlanta’s Theater of the Stars, and last year relocated to Atlanta.

She lives in midtown and worships at Ebenezer Baptist Church. Look for her first CD in 17 years this fall. Love Is on the Way features jazz standards and R&B love songs.

Sheryl Lee Ralph, now 53, played Deena Jones, often thought to be a thinly veiled depiction of Diana Ross (creators insist she’s a combination of Motown artists).

Ralph played a New York socialite in 2002’s Thoroughly Modern Millie. On TV, she’s done “Designing Women,” “Moesha” and “Justice League.” She played Denzel Washington’s wife in the feature film The Mighty Quinn and Robert De Niro’s mistress in Mistress.

Loretta Devine, now 61, played Lorrell Robinson. She’s had recurring TV roles on “Grey’s Anatomy,” “Boston Public,” “Eli Stone” and “Everybody Hates Chris,” and appeared in the feature films Waiting to Exhale, Urban Legend, Urban Legends: Final Cut, I Am Sam, Woman Thou Art Loosed and Crash.

She did the stop-motion animated TV series “The PJs” and is a five-time NAACP Image Award winner. She played a jazz singer in the Dreamgirls movie and can be seen this fall in Tyler Perry’s film version of For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow is Enuf.

Tony awards and ran more than threeand-a-half years. A 1987 revival ran five months. A 2001 staged concert in New York became a ticket-scalper’s fantasy, with Audra McDonald, Heather Headley and Lillias White as the girls, and Billy Porter (Jimmy), Norm Lewis (Curtis) and Darius de Haas (C.C.)

as the men in their lives. Atlanta has seen numerous productions, including two by Theater of the Stars, in which Jennifer Holliday reprised her Tony Award-winning performance as Effie Melody White (a role first written for Nell Carter, who bowed out when cast in TV’s “Gimme a Break”).

power plays, disc jockeys and payola, the presidency of John F. Kennedy and the uneasiness of the civil rights movement.

That hasn’t been a problem, says Krieger.

“I think people learned as they went and certain things resonated,” he says of the young cast. “I think it was a learning curve for them, and they are very bright people, and they get it.” (Cast member Milton Craig Nealy has seen it all. He plays Marty now and was an understudy and swing in the original production.)

Dreamgirls, the show, opened in 1962 at the Apollo Theater in New York. This Dreamgirls tour opened in November, at the Apollo Theater in New York. A bit of synchronicity? Sure. A great marketing move? You bet. As the show’s refrain says, “Show biz, it’s just show biz.”

More than anything else, however, this tour owes its life to a movie. The 2006 feature film with Jennifer Hudson, Beyonce Knowles and Eddie Murphy gave producers a new way to look at the show, says Krieger, the last living member of the original creative team. It gave them a chance to create the “best possible” Dreamgirls for audiences who have never seen it onstage.

This version has all-new sets and costumes and a fluidity that exceeded even the grasp of original director Michael Bennett, the Chorus Line mastermind who won a Tony (Best Choreography) for this, his last show, and earned praise for introducing a cinematic structure to the Broadway stage. The song “Listen” has been taken from the film and reworked as a reunion number for Effie and Deena.

who’s who MOYA ANGELA (Effie White) joins our cast from The Lion King’s Gazelle and Cheetah tours (Disney). Her roles included Rafiki and Shenzi. She is a native of Indianapolis, Ind., where she won two Encore awards in her roles as Sara in Ragtime and Adapearle in The Wiz. Moya made her NYC debut with Dreamgirls and thanks her parents/loving family for support.

SYESHA MERCADO (Deena Jones) rose to fame as the second runner-up on American Idol’s seventh season. The rising starlet has begun recording her first album, collaborating with prominent writers and producers, including Grammywinner Diane Warren and Evan Bogart.

As a young actress, Syesha received the prestigious South Eastern Theatre Conference’s Best Supporting Actress award. She majored in theater at Florida International University and has appeared in national commercials.

CHAZ LAMAR SHEPHERD (Curtis Taylor, Jr.). Philadelphia’s Chaz Shepherd has co-starred in many TV shows (“7th Heaven,” “The Parkers,” “The Game...”) and as Harpo in Broadway’s The Color Purple. Chaz’s gospel work was Grammy nominated in 2009. After being on the Billboard charts three times in 2009, Chaz’s soul/R&B album Love & Truth was released during the Dreamgirls tour and is now available in the lobby.

CHESTER GREGORY (James “Thunder” Early), an award-winning actor/performer/ singer/songwriter, is ecstatic about being Jimmy in Dreamgirls and returning to the world famous Apollo Theater, where he made his N.Y. debut as Jackie Wilson in The Jackie Wilson Story (Jeff, AUDELCO, BTAA and Black Excellence awards). Broadway: Hairspray (Seaweed), Cry-Baby (Dupree) and Tarzan (Terk). Other: Hairspray (movie) and performing for Michael Jackson.

ADRIENNE WARREN (Lorrell Robinson) is a recent graduate of Marymount Manhattan.

ROBERT LONGBOTTOM (Director/Choreographer) made his Broadway debut as director/choreographer on Side Show, which earned four Tony Award® nominations including Best Musical.

Robert also directed Hay Fever for the Old Globe Theater.

TOM EYEN (Book and Lyrics) wrote the book and lyrics for the Broadway musical Dreamgirls, for which he won both the 1982 Tony Award and Drama Desk Award for Best Book of a Musical. Eyen was a pioneer of the off Broadway theater movement in the ’60s and a prolific experimental playwright.

His first commercial success came in 1970 with his satirical comedy The Dirtiest Show in Town. Other plays include Why Hannah’s Skirt Won’t Stay Down, Sarah B. Divine! and Women Behind Bars. He died on May 29, 1991.

HENRY KRIEGER (Composer) began composing for off Broadway in his 20s, a venue that led to his meeting with playwright-lyricist Tom Eyen. Together with director-choreographer Michael Bennett, they created the long-running Broadway hit musical Dreamgirls, which opened at the Imperial Theatre on Dec. 20, 1981.

Dreamgirls won six Tony awards, and Mr. Krieger was nominated for his now legendary score, for which he won the Grammy Award for Best Original Cast Album. Dreamgirls generated new success with new audiences as a Dreamworks film ,directed by Bill Condon. His most recent Broadway musical, Side Show, directed and choreographed by Robert Longbottom (book and lyrics by Bill Russell), opened at the Richard Rodgers Theatre in November 1997. Side Show received four Tony nominations, including Best Score. Mr. Krieger is delighted to be reunited with Mr. Longbottom on his wonderful new production of Dreamgirls!

WILLIE REALE (Additional Material). With his friend Henry Krieger, Willie wrote the

song “Patience” for the film Dreamgirls (Oscar nomination). He wrote A Year with Frog and Toad and received a Tony nomination for the book and for the score (with his brother, composer Robert Reale).

He is the founder of The 52nd Street Project, which he directed for 18 years. Mr. Reale has written a good deal of television drama and recently won an Emmy for his contribution to the reinvention of The Electric Company currently on PBS. His latest musical, written with his brother and playwright Richard Dresser, recently debuted at the American Repertory Theater in Boston.

MICHAEL BENNETT (Conception, Original Director / Choreographer) choreographed Promises, Promises; Coco; Company; Follies (which he co-directed with Hal Prince); and Seasaw (which he also wrote and directed). In 1973 he made his debut as a dramatic director with Twigs, which starred Sada Thompson. A Chorus Line, which he conceived, choreographed and directed, won nine Tony Awards. In 1976 he and the other authors of A Chorus Line were awarded a Pulitzer Prize for drama. In 1979 he produced, directed and choreographed Ballroom, which was nominated for eight Tony Awards and won Mr. Bennett his sixth Tony. He won his seventh Tony Award for 1981’s Dreamgirls and directed its 1985 Broadway revival.

The film adaptation of Dreamgirls was released in December 2006.

SHANE SPARKS (Co-Choreographer) is one of the most talented and sought after choreographers working in the entertainment industry today. Shane puts his heart into every dance step and that has translated into some of the most memorable dance performances of the last decade earning Shane an Emmy nomination and a spot on two of the most popular dance shows on television, the hit FOX TV show “So You Think You Can Dance?” and the MTV smash hit “America’s Best Dance Crew.” Shane is excited to be a part of the Dreamgirls production.

FOR YOUR INFORMATION The Theatre A fully restored 1929 “Movie Palace,” the Fox Theatre, with 4,678 seats, is a multiple-purpose facility, housing Broadway shows, ballet, symphonies, concerts, movies, and private corporate events.

Private Rooms The Fox Theatre has three private rental spaces, with accommodations for 25 to 1,200 guests. Our Egyptian Ballroom and Grand Salon are beautifully decorated and can be set up to your specifications. The brand new Landmarks Lounge is adjacent to the lobby and is perfect for a small pre-show and intermission event. All rooms include the Fox Theatre’s professional sales and coordination staff. The Box Office The Fox Theatre Box Office is located in the arcade entrance to the theatre. The Box Office is open for walk up ticket sales Monday-Friday, 10:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m., and Saturday, 10:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. The Fox Theatre Box Office is not open on Sundays unless there is a performance. During Events, the Box Office opens two hours prior to show time. Doors to the Fox open one hour prior to show time. Tickets for all performances at the Fox may be purchased at any TICKETMASTER outlet, by calling TICKETMASTER at 800.745.3000, or by visiting the Fox Theatre Box Office in person during regular Box Office hours.

Concessions Concession stands are located in the Spanish Room, adjacent to the main lobby, and on the mezzanine lobby level.

Restrooms Restrooms are located on the Main Lobby and Mezzanine Lobby levels. Restrooms are also located on the Gallery level. Restrooms for patrons who are physically challenged are located in the Spanish Room Gift Shop The Fox Theatre operates a gift shop selling history books, T-shirts, sweatshirts, and an assortment of other theatrerelated merchandise. The gift shop is located in the main lobby and is open at each performance.

Tours Tours of the Fox Theatre are available through the Atlanta Preservation Center. Tours are conducted Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays at 10:00 a.m. and Saturdays at 10:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. Tours begin in the Peachtree Street Arcade entrance to the theatre. For more information on tours and to confirm the tour schedule, please call the Atlanta Preservation Center at 404.688.3353.

Smoking In accordance with the Fulton County Clean Air Ordinance, the Fox Theatre is a smoke-free facility. Smoking is only permitted in designated areas.

Special Needs Ken Shook, Patron Services Director, is our liaison to the disabled community. He can be reached at 404.881.2118 and can provide information on such topics as the locations and prices of accessible seating and other programs for the disabled. The Fox Theatre also has a new brochure detailing all these programs for our patrons with special needs. They are available at the Guest Relations Table.

Fox Ambassadors are located at the Guest Relations Table in the main lobby at the Fox Theatre Merchandise Kiosk to offer their assistance, theatre information, and several rental items to enhance your performance enjoyment. An audio clarification device (Phonic Ear) is available for patrons with hearing disabilities. It is available, free of charge, on a first-come, first-serve basis on the evening of a performance, or you may reserve a device by calling the Patron Services Director. A limited number of booster seats are also available free of charge. Binoculars are available for sale. All items require a form of identification to be held until the item is returned.

Elevators Elevators are located at the north end of each lobby. The elevators are available during all performances and make it possible to access each lobby without the use of stairs.

Parking Parking is available within a four-block radius in all directions of the Fox Theatre. Advanced reserved parking is available for sale at the Fox Box Office or by calling TICKETMASTER at 800.745.3000. The Fox Theatre assumes no responsibility for vehicles parked in any of the privately owned parking lots operating in the Fox Theatre district.

Performance Notes All patrons, regardless of age, must have a ticket in order to be admitted to the theatre. Please be aware that not all events are suitable for children. Infants will not be admitted to adult programs/performances. Parents will be asked to remove children who create a disturbance.

Latecomers will be seated at the discretion of the management, in conjunction with the wishes of the producers.

Please turn off all pagers and cell phones prior to the beginning of each performance. Please limit conversation during the performances.

GOLDEN RULES The following brief, but important, article has been published to assist in audience etiquette.

To this day we get at least one phone call a week asking for reprint rights. These calls and letters come from orchestras and theatres, opera and ballet companies all over the United States and Canada, big and little troupes alike.

The message, telegraphed between the lines, seems to be an S.O.S.: American audiences are out of control. Are they?

Here’s a refresher course. Please read on, and remember, part of one’s pact as an audience member is to take seriously the pleasure of others, a responsibility fulfilled by quietly attentive (or silently inattentive) and selfcontained behavior. After all, you can be as demonstrative as you want during bows and curtain calls.

1. Go easy with the atomizer; many people are highly allergic to perfume and cologne.

2. If you bring a child, make sure etiquette is part of the experience. Children love learning new things.

3. Unwrap all candies and cough drops before the curtain goes up or the concert begins.

4. Make sure cell phones, beepers, and watch alarms are OFF. And don't jangle the bangles.

5. The overture is part of the performance.

Please cease talking at this point.

6. Note to lovebirds: When you lean your heads together, you block the view of the person behind you. Leaning forward also blocks the view.

7. THOU SHALT NOT TALK, or hum, or sing along, or beat time with a body part.

8. Force yourself to wait for a pause or intermission before rifling through a purse, backpack, or shopping bag.

9. Yes, the parking lot gets busy and public transportation is tricky, but leaving while the show is in progress is discourteous.

10. Honor the old standby: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.

CAMP BROADWAY In 2000, the Fox started Camp Broadway, a summer camp for kids aged 11 to 17 of diverse financial and ethnic backgrounds.

Many of the instructors are Broadway performers from New York. During the course of the week-long camp, students work on creating their own musical,

he mission of the Fox Theatre is to preserve and share the theatre.

Excess revenues from annual operations are reinvested in the theatre’s ongoing preservation, restoration, and maintenance. Any additional sums are used for the Fox’s Outreach and Education programs and the Fox Theatre Institute. Since the Fox continues to be successful, it is in a position to live up to this promise to maintain the theatre,

combining the storylines of two popular musicals and rewriting the lyrics of one of the shows’ songs to fit their theme.

They also take a field trip to see a touring Broadway performance at the Fox. AileyCamp Atlanta AileyCamp held its first summer camp in Atlanta in 2007. Unlike Camp Broadway, AileyCamp is not a performing arts camp. The curriculum was developed by the Alvin Ailey American Dance Foundation in New York and uses dance, creative writing, and art to teach children discipline, communication skills, and self-esteem. Underserved youth, ages 11 to 14, are recruited from local Boys and Girls Clubs and middle schools and are offered a full scholarship, which is underwritten by the Fox. Delta International Series The Fox also offers outreach programs for adults. Prior to every Delta International Series show, free workshops or demonstrations are held.

The continued success of the Fox demonstrates the impact that historic preservation has on cities, communities, and overall quality of life.
