The Unnoticed heroes of
MAMMA MIA!
If you notice them, swings aren’t doing their job By Kathy Janich

Rae and Myers are two of the touring show’s four swings. They go on when an ensemble member is sick, injured, on vacation or taking a personal day. This can happen once a week, eight times a week or even in the middle of a show. It can get really complicated. And it has its own vocabulary. “Standbys” are there to cover one specific role, usually the lead. In the case of Mamma Mia!, a character like Donna Sheridan, owner of the Greek taverna and mother of Sophie. “Understudies” back up several roles, usually principals who have lines, scenes, songs and dances. “Swings” go on in ensemble “tracks,” the path that any given ensemble 10 EncoreAtlantA.com
member takes throughout the course of a show. Rae, who is also Mamma Mia!’s dance captain, covers seven female tracks; Myers covers eight male tracks. “Covering” means going on for another performer, knowing exactly what that actor does throughout the show and being able to carry it off as seamlessly as possible. It means knowing how to move onstage so you don’t bump into people, where you’re positioned in a dance number and what vocal part you must sing. Sometimes swings know months in advance that they’ll be going on, sometimes it’s mid-show, so they are always at the theater during a performance.

ou’ll never see their names above the title, or in lights on the marquee. But without performers like Kyli Rae and Christopher Hudson Myers, Mamma Mia! wouldn’t go on.

Both Rae and Myers have been with Mamma Mia! for about a year and admit that most theatergoers don’t know what a swing does or that the job even exists. Each has their own method to the madness, and each came to Mamma Mia in a different way. Rae, who’s from Los Angeles, began dancing at age 6 and doing TV commercials by age 8. She went to high school with Broadway regular and “Glee” actor Matthew Morrison. She has danced with the Joffrey Ballet and played Marty in the 1999 international tour of Grease. She auditioned for Broadway’s Mamma Mia! years ago and always got a callback but never a job. Until now. She calls that “ironic.” Myers, who’s from Fort Worth, Texas, got his swing feet wet at Hersheypark, the theme park in Hershey, Penn., but he’d been doing theater since age 7,

Like I said, it can get complicated. Myers relates this story: He was in one night for an actor covering one of the dad roles. Then, toward the end of Act 1, the actor playing Pepper pulled a back muscle and couldn’t continue. At intermission, Myers switched to the “Pepper track.” The other male swing, who was already covering one ensemble track, had to pick up a second track as well. The goal: To keep the show as intact as possible. If the audience notices you, you’re not doing your job, says Rae. “There are definitely nights where, in the middle of a number, your brain goes up in smoke and for half a second, you don’t know where you’re going,” Myers says, with a good-natured laugh. “Audiences rarely notice, even though you’ve had a split second of panic. It’s really challenging, but it’s also what I like about being a swing.”
His mother said, “If you are a soldier, you will become a general. If you are a priest, you will be the pope.” Instead, he was a painter and he became Picasso.

a swing, you will fail sometimes,” she says. “You will mess up, you will have epic failures.” It’s all part of the gig. “It is a hard job,” Myers says, a grin in his voice, “but it’s really, really fun.” Kathy Janich is an Atlanta theater artist, freelance writer and daily newspaper refugee. including a stint as the littlest Lost Boy in a Cathy Rigby Peter Pan. “I pretty much fell in love with theater and wanted to do it the rest of my life,” he says unabashedly. He met his wifeto-be, Rachel MacIsaac, at Hersheypark. They spent three years entertaining on Holland American cruise ships, and then moved to New York. She, incidentally, joins the Mamma Mia! tour with this stop in Atlanta as – what else? – a female swing. Yes, Myers admits, the entire family is crazy. He does his job by keeping his tracks compartmentalized and taking good notes on a computer that is his ever-present backstage companion. Rae has a “bible” in which everything that’s staged for the show is charted on paper. She has a sheet for each of the seven tracks she covers. Each track has a specific traffic pattern and as many details as possible to help her get where she must be onstage without running into anybody. When not in a particular show, she often sits backstage with her head in this “bible” or watches the track of someone she hasn’t gone in for in a while. Both admit it’s challenging. A good swing, Myers says, has to be able to pay attention to details. “And you have to be able to learn at a very quick rate. And then you have to remember stuff and categorize it. You have to have a pretty organized brain and then be a chameleon.” To that Rae would add the ability to recover quickly, and with grace. “As

etiquette 1. Please arrive early. Latecomers may not be seated until intermission. 2. Take care of personal needs (drinks of water or restroom) before the performance begins. 3. Please silence or turn off all electronic devices, including cell phones, beepers, and watch alarms. We encourage you to share your experience at the Fox via social media, but please refrain from doing so or texting during performances; the glow from your device is distracting. 4. Most shows do not allow photography of any kind. Flash photography inside the theatre is never allowed as it is a distraction to those around you and a danger to the performers. 5. The overture is part of the performance. Please cease talking at this point. 6. Dear Lovebirds, when you lean your heads together, you block the view of the people behind you. Please consider the people that will be seated behind you when choosing whether or not to wear a hat or what hair style you choose. 7. Please refrain from talking, humming, or singing along with the show, except when encouraged to do so by the artist or show. 8. Please wait for an appropriate moment to dig something out of your pocket or bag. 9. Go easy with the perfume and cologne, many people are highly allergic. 10. If you need assistance during the show, please go to your nearest volunteer usher. If additional assistance is needed the usher will get the appropriate person to further help you. 11. Yes, the parking lot gets busy and public transportation is tricky, but leaving while the show is in progress or before the actors have taken their final bows is discourteous. Wait until it is over and then exit with the rest of the audience.

examinations, clinical breast examinations by your doctor and annual mammograms, you can help detect changes in breast tissue that could be cancerous. Currently, the best method to detect breast cancer in its earliest stages is a mammogram. A mammogram is a safe, low-dose X-ray of the breast. Breast cancer survivor Linda Venis knows the importance of this test. “It’s been 14 years since I was diagnosed with breast cancer after an annual mammogram,” Venis says. Venis’ follow-up diagnostic mammogram revealed a very aggressive tumor. She went on to have a bilateral mastectomy. For the first five years after her surgery, she had mammograms twice a year; she now has them once a year. She had her surgery and all her screenings at WellStar and is now cancer free. “I’m so glad my doctors at WellStar were cautious in following up,” Venis says.
WellStar Kennestone Women’s Imaging Center WellStar now offers a new place to have mammograms and other diagnostic tests: The WellStar Kennestone Women’s Imaging Center. The Center, accredited by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers, is the latest addition to WellStar’s 15 state-of-the-art Imaging Centers. WellStar Kennestone Women’s Imaging Center performs more than 35,000 digital mammograms annually. One of the largest women’s imaging centers in the nation, the 18,000-sq. ft. facility was designed with comfort in mind. 52 EncoreAtlantA.com
“We want to change patients’ perceptions about imaging centers,” said Gerri Sharp, executive director, Medical Imaging, WellStar Kennestone Hospital. From the plush robes to the spa-like décor, the Center aims to ensure patient convenience, comfort and coordinated care. There are three separate sub-waiting rooms for screening, diagnostic mammography and interventional procedures, each featuring refreshment areas. The all-digital facility offers the latest in technological advances including digital mammography, ultrasound, bone density, stereotactic and breast MRI biopsy and the nation’s first commercial installation of the Philips Ingenia 3.0T Breast MRI. The unit’s crystal-clear, high-resolution images allow radiologists to see irregularities more clearly; it’s an outstanding tool for women at high risk for breast cancer, those who have just received a diagnosis, or for follow-up after treatment. Prior to scheduling a mammography appointment, WellStar requires a physician’s order. For a physician referral, call 770-956-STAR (7827). Here’s what you need to know about buying the ring By Kristi Casey Sanders
S
The 4Cs: Color, cut, clarity and carat
The diamond itself will account for 85 percent to 90 percent of your expense, Knox says. Understanding the 4Cs of diamond quality will help you decide which elements you’re willing to compromise on in order to get the highest-quality stone you can afford. Share that information and your budget with your salesperson, and they’ll help you find the right diamond. “First pick the color,” Knox advises. “That’s where you’ll see a big difference in the pricing.” Diamond color ratings actually denote the absence of color. Grades D, E, F, G, H, I and L are colorless. Beyond L, the stones start to look yellow. 58 EncoreAtlantA.com
After choosing the color, look for a well-cut stone that’s symmetrical and not too bottom-heavy or shallowly cut. “If it’s not well cut, it won’t sparkle,” Knox says. A well-cut stone has several facets that meet evenly, with all the points lining up. If the diamond is bottom-heavy, it will be hard to set in jewelry, and the color may be concentrated near the point or edges. If the stone has a shallow cut, you can see what’s underneath the stone and you don’t want that. The best way to ensure you are getting what you pay for is to only buy stones that are GIA-certified, Knox says. “Next, you go to what’s internal — that’s clarity,” he says. Clarity gradings run from F-IF (flawless or internally flawless) to I1-I3 (inclusions). In the

electing an engagement ring is a nerve-racking experience. Purchasing diamonds at any time is a financial investment. But when it’s a gift for someone you want to spend the rest of your life with, making the “right” choice can be incredibly stressful. Bob Knox, designer and goldsmith at Knox Jewelers for the past 50 years, has a few words of advice on how to find the perfect ring.
Setting the stone
Once you’ve selected the diamond, you must still determine how to set it. Engagement rings range from simple bands with four to six prongs holding 60 EncoreAtlantA.com
a solitary diamond to gem-encrusted bands and intricate pavé settings. Knowing a bit about your sweetheart’s lifestyle can help you determine the best metal to use. Typical choices are white gold, yellow gold and platinum. But if your intended lifts weights, rock-climbs or wears rings on her right hand, avoid pavé or platinum ring bands. “Platinum is resistant to wear, but you’ll get dings and bends,” Knox says. Those scratches can be buffed out, but if she’s going to obsess about the wear and tear, it’s best go with an 18-karat white or plain gold setting instead. Titanium is another metal offered by some jewelers. It’s not a precious metal, so it’s affordable, and very durable. Like platinum, however, it will show scratches, so it’s not the best choice for an active woman. And unlike other metals, it is almost impossible to resize if you get a band that’s ill-fitting. Something else to consider is how the engagement ring will be worn with the wedding ring. The prongs that surround the stone are called the head; where it sits is the shank. If the head sits low on the shank, close to the finger, she will have to purchase a wedding band that curves around the stone. If the head and shank are elevated, it will fit tightly against any kind of wedding ring. “Get her something plain and basic,” Knox recommends, “Then add to it.”

middle, going from high quality to low are the ratings of VVS1-VVS2 (very very slight inclusions), VS1-VS2 (very slight inclusions) and SI1-SI2 (slight inclusions). “Men like to be flawless; women like a bigger stone,” Knox says, laughing. “There’s nothing wrong with a VS1VS2 or a good SI. It’s like if you put two Porsches together: They’re both perfect, except one has a slight tear underneath the driver’s seat.” The last of the 4Cs is carat — the size of the diamond. The largest diamonds you’ll find in the consumer market are 2-carat stones, but 1.5 carats can look just as impressive. The price per carat is lower for smaller stones because raw diamonds that are large enough to cut into 1 carat or larger shapes are hard to find. The most dramatic jumps in price and appearance come in .5 carat intervals. There’s not much difference between a 1 and 1.23-carat diamond, but there’s a very large difference when you compare them against a .75 or a 1.5-carat stone. And diamond prices are volatile, so be aware that the cost might fluctuate if you’re not looking and buying on the same day.
