MAKING ELF SPARKLE INSIDE AND OUT

The tour’s director, Sam Scalamoni, reveals the vision behind the musical’s magic.

The curtain rises, the lights glow, and Santa…realizes the football game he wanted to watch wasn’t taped! His plans foiled, he realizes, “It’s Christmas! Let’s read a Christmas story.” Santa cracks open a book, the world of Elf begins to unfold.

The tour’s director, Sam Scalamoni, collaborated with the musical’s design team specifically to create a pop-up book come to life in his version of Elf. Santa’s workshop (designed by Christine Peters) looks like an illustrated cottage. The elves’ clothing (designed by Gregg Barnes) pop with color, like a bag of jelly beans, and their silhouettes dance with whimsy. The New York City backdrops hang like paintings on a page. As Scalamoni said, “As Santa reads us the story out of his pop-up book, we step into the pop-up book.”

The musical, much like the movie it’s based on, is “the story of Buddy, the elf” — a man raised in the North Pole as an oversized elf, who discovers in adulthood that his biological father lives in New York City. Buddy ventures to Manhattan to

find his dad and, eventually, reinvigorate the Christmas spirit of the entire city. While the idea of holiday spirit can seem naïve to some, Buddy’s fortitude in kindness and joy is the driving engine of the story’s endearing nature.

Will Ferrell iconically originated the role of Buddy in the 2003 film, and it would be easy to consider the overgrown elf a ridiculous character. “People think of Will Ferrell as this big, outrageous, larger-thanlife character,” Scalamoni said. “Actually, if you watch the movie Elf, it’s one of his more grounded, honest, genuine performances.”

That earnestness is the key to Scalamoni’s staging — which has been touring since 2012. “Every time we do this, I talk to the actor who plays Buddy, and I say, ‘I know it feels like you want to chew scenery here, but that’s not what this is about,’” said the director. “This is about being an adult who was raised by elves with Santa Claus in the North Pole, and then plucked from that situation, placed into another one and how to react to these situations.”

“They have to come from a real place,” Scalamoni said of the actors who play Buddy. “I think that helps ground the show.”

And that doesn’t just go for Buddy. Scalamoni tasks every actor in the cast with finding truth rather than fantasy. “I have this conversation with the elves all the time,” he said. “I say to them, ‘These are just people who happen to work at a toy shop. They are not little pixies. We need to play them as people.’”

Capturing that humanity is what allows for the magic. As Scalamoni said, “It’s about spirit.”

While Buddy drips with spirit, New York City does not. But Scalamoni has also been careful about the portrayal of the people who make up the metropolis. “Manhattan gets a bad reputation for being a little gruff and rough sometimes,” he said. “We paint the people in New York as people who are burdened. I talk to the gentleman who plays Walter [Buddy’s dad], and I always say, ‘You’re not mean. You’re a good guy. You’re just buried under a lot of pressure — family pressure, work pressure.’ I think we all can relate to that.”

That relatability is key to Elf, and book writers Bob Martin and the late Thomas Meehan infuse empathy — as well as a sleighful of joy — into the script, while composer Matthew Sklar and lyricist Chad Begeulin do the same for the score. Like Scalamoni said, “We watch Buddy crack that [burden] open with his spirit, true joy and passion for wanting to live this joyous life that he’s grown up in and share that with others.”

Sharing the spirit of Elf is what has kept Scalamoni with the tour of the musical through 15 different companies over the course of 12 years. “I love telling the story and I love what it says about the season,” Scalamoni said. “We bring the idea of spending time with family and the people that you care most about. That is really what the season is about: taking time to enjoy the season of giving and caring,” he said. “We do the show at the holidays, but you could see it any time.”

“I feel we get to share that with the rest of the country every year when the tour goes out,” he continued. “That really keeps me passionate about it. We have a little gem here, and I love preserving it.”

THE TIMELESS GLAMOUR OF BOB MACKIE: THE VISIONARY BEHIND CHER’S ICONIC LOOKS

Bob Mackie, a titan in the world of costume and fashion design, has dazzled audiences for decades with his extraordinary creations. With nine Emmy Awards and three Academy Award nominations under his belt, Mackie’s work has been synonymous with glamour and creativity. As the Tony-winning costume designer for The Cher Show, Mackie revisited and reinvented the legendary styles of Cher, the superstar he has dressed for over 50 years in an array of sequins, feathers and bold statements.

A Historic First Encounter Mackie’s journey with Cher began in 1967 during her guest appearance on “The Carol Burnett Show”. It was a moment that would set the stage for a groundbreaking partnership. “I was trying to fix a beaded dress in the hallway when Cher exclaimed, ‘I love beaded dresses!’” recalls Mackie. This casual conversation blossomed into a creative collaboration that would redefine fashion for women in entertainment.

“I told her, ‘When you’re ready, I’m ready,’” he remembers, signaling the start of a vibrant career marked by Cher’s unique style. At the time, Mackie was captivated by Cher’s unconventional look, which defied the beauty standards of the day. “Pretty girls were all boopsie and blonde back then,” he explains. “Cher was different—fascinating.”

Dressing Multiple Versions of Cher

Designing costumes for The Cher Show presented a unique challenge: capturing the essence of Cher through three actresses portraying different ages of her life. “It’s tricky because they’re not Cher. They don’t necessarily look like her or have her build,” Mackie notes. The challenge lies in creating garments that resonate with Cher’s spirit while accommodating the actresses’ interpretations.

Yet, Mackie’s experience shines through, allowing him to create looks that reflect Cher’s evolution while maintaining her signature flair. His designs have not only shaped Cher’s public persona but have also influenced a generation of women aspiring to express themselves through fashion.

A Personal Touch in the Spotlight

In a delightful twist, Mackie himself is a character in The Cher Show, portrayed by an actor in the show. Michael Beresse, who originated the role on Broadway, describes his experience: “Bob is the nicest man in the world. He made me feel so at home and comfortable.” This reflects Mackie’s genuine nature, even amidst the glamour of Broadway. “It’s the last thing I ever thought would happen,” Mackie says, chuckling at the notion of being represented on stage.

Simplistic Elegance Amidst Opulence

While Mackie is renowned for his extravagant and daring designs, he also understands the power of simplicity. He recounts a particular scene in the show where Cher, auditioning for a role, is dressed in jeans and a jacket. “I wanted her to look vulnerable,” he explains, despite Cher’s initial skepticism about the simplicity of the outfit. Cher’s signature style may often lean towards the outrageous, but Mackie’s vision encompasses a range of aesthetics that showcase the essence of the character.

Cher’s Strong Opinions

Mackie acknowledges Cher’s strong opinions about fashion. “She doesn’t want to look ordinary,” he says, emphasizing her desire to break free from traditional molds. This bold approach has allowed Mackie to create pieces that not only reflect Cher’s personality but also challenge societal expectations.

Yet, Mackie’s artistry transcends the flashiness often associated with show business. “He doesn’t like his clothes to appear vulgar,” Beresse notes. Mackie’s designs celebrate the human form, making everyone who wears them feel beautiful.

A Legacy of Friendship and Understanding

At the heart of Mackie’s work is a profound understanding of Cher, rooted in years of collaboration. “She realizes that I understand her,” he says, acknowledging the unique bond they share. This connection, forged through creativity and mutual respect, has not only shaped Mackie’s career but has also left an indelible mark on the world of fashion.

Mackie’s designs for The Cher Show highlight his enduring legacy as a designer, artist, and friend, showcasing the power of creativity, individuality, and timeless glamour. Whether adorned in sequins or dressed in denim, Mackie’s work tells a story that reaches far beyond the stage.

The Cher Show is scheduled to come to the Saenger Theatre starting December 17, 2024.
