Ringmaster: Jerry Springer takes center stage in Chicago By Daniel Burnley
Paul Kolnik
P
op culture icon, former mayor of Cincinnati, and sometimes controversial purveyor of tabloid life, Jerry Springer is again centerstage in the hit musical Chicago. He’s already wowed television audiences with his turn on “Dancing with the Stars.” This month, Springer will be dancing under the stars of the Fabulous Fox Theatre, playing the fast-talking lawyer Billy Flynn. So, how did Jerry Springer came to be a part of the show? “He needed the money,” jokes producer Barry Weissler. “Seriously, we have reached out to talent of all kinds over the 11-plus years the show has been running, and when Jerry’s name came up, it was such a natural fit. He loved the idea, and he does a really wonderful job that might surprise a lot of people who didn’t know he had such talent for the stage.” Springer successfully
performed a six-week run of the show in London’s West End before joining the cast stateside. Springer is best known for his antics on “The Jerry Springer Show,” which turned the former mayor of Cincinnati into something of a pop icon. Springer also has been a featured character on “The Simpson’s,” graced the covers of Rolling Stone, Esquire, Vanity Fair and New York Magazine. In 1998, Barbara Walters chose Springer as one of her “10 Most Fascinating People.” His eponymous TV show has inspired a fictionalized film version, Ringmaster, and a musical, Jerry Springer-The Opera. Chicago, itself, is something of a pop culture icon — not only because of its wildly popular Broadway and movie versions, but also because of the innately “American” story it tells. “There’s a dark message here that says if you’re rich Atlanta’s Performing Arts Publication

Set against the dazzling backdrop of the 1920s (it is based on a play from that period about real murderesses), the musical tells the story of Roxie Hart, a housewife and nightclub dancer who maliciously murders her on-the-side lover after he threatens to walk out on her. Desperate to avoid conviction, she dupes the public, the media, and her rival cellmate, Velma Kelly, by hiring Billy Flynn, Chicago’s slickest criminal lawyer. Flynn uses the power of the media to win sympathy for the coldblooded killers he represents and get them off scott-free. The story of how these vicious women become glamorous celebrities has only become more modern with age. And perhaps that’s part of the allure. It’s easy to imagine their story appearing in today’s tabloid headlines. What’s surprising is discovering that our celebrity-obsessed culture is nothing new. Chicago: The Musical will play the Fabulous Fox Theatre Sept. 8-13, 2009. Daniel Burnley is an Atlanta stage and film actor, writer and freelance advertising/ marketing communications consultant.

enough, if you’re beautiful enough, if you’re sexy enough — you can get away with murder,” Weissler says. “[It] is a vaudeville approach to the sociopolitical environment we live in. It’s a bit cynical, but covers its cynicism with brilliant entertainment, so that you enjoy every moment.” Weissler has produced many well known musicals, including Sweet Charity, Gypsy, Fiddler on the Roof, My Fair Lady and Grease, but he likes Chicago the best. “It’s some of the best music and lyrics written for the stage, and I mean that with all sincerity,” Weissler says. “Anne Reinking, the choreographer, has remained faithful to her mentor, the late, great Bob Fosse, for the dance numbers, and the whole experience is truly spectacular for audiences.” Critics and audiences seem to agree. It may not have been a resounding success when it first opened in 1975, but the 1996 revival of Chicago won six Tony awards and holds the record for longestrunning revival on Broadway. The 2002 film version, starring Renée Zellwegger, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Queen Latifah and Richard Gere, won six Oscars.

Atlanta’s Stu James shines in The Color Purple
T
he Color Purple: The Musical about Love may be nearing its three-year run on tour, but for Stu James, performing at the Fox never gets old. James, who plays the character Harpo, was born, raised and educated in Atlanta, and lived here until he set his sights on New York, nearly 12 years ago. And although he’s moved around since and currently lives in Los Angeles, his career proves that home is definitely where the heart is. “Being back in Atlanta is a wonderful, wonderful feeling,” James says. “I’m not able to get home as often because I’m on the road, but being able to come once again, it’s grounding — it keeps it real for me. And, it’s wonderful and still exciting for my family [including his “Big Mama” who turns 100 this year], they’re always excited. They’d come every night if they could.”

“I love and adore Sunshine for many reasons, but here are just a few: She has a kind spirit; is compassionate, understanding, respectful of all, energetic, funny, creative, professional, intelligent and hard-working; and she always puts the customer first! —Stephanie Parker, Vice President Broadway Across America—Mid-South Region “Sunshine has been just what her name implies, always happy no matter what the issue. Many times, I have needed to find seats for bands at the last minute or move seat locations. In the 30 years that I have known Sunshine, I have never heard her yell or raise her voice (which is very unusual in the music business). I know that she works for the Fox, but we have always felt that she was a part of our organization, as I’m sure most do. Simply, she is the best. —Peter Conlon, Promoter

GOLDEN RULES The following brief, but important article has been published to assist in audience etiquette. To this day we get at least one phone call a week asking for reprint rights. These calls and letters come from orchestras and theaters, opera and ballet companies all over the United States and Canada, big and little troupes alike. The message, telegraphed between the lines, seems to be an S.O.S.: American audiences are out of control. Are they? Here’s a refresher course. Please read on, and remember, part of one’s pact as an audience member is to take seriously the pleasure of others, a responsibility fulfilled by quietly attentive (or silently inattentive) and selfcontained behavior. After all, you can be as demonstrative as you want during bows and curtain calls. 1. Go easy with the atomizer; many people are highly allergic to perfume and cologne. 2. If you bring a child, make sure etiquette is part of the experience. Children love learning new things. 3. Unwrap all candies and cough drops before the curtain goes up or the concert begins. 4. Make sure cell phones, beepers, and watch alarms are OFF. And don't jangle the bangles. 5. The overture is part of the performance. Please cease talking at this point. 6. Note to lovebirds: When you lean your heads together, you block the view of the person behind you. Leaning forward also blocks the view. 7. THOU SHALT NOT TALK, or hum, or sing along, or beat time with a body part. 8. Force yourself to wait for a pause or intermission before rifling through a purse, backpack or shopping bag. 9. Yes, the parking lot gets busy and public transportation is tricky, but leaving while the show is in progress is discourteous. 10. Honor the old standby: Do unto others, as you would have them do unto you. 46 EncoreAtlantA.com

acting, performing, dancing … they all work together, and if you’re talented in all those areas you use it.” Indeed, he does. When he’s not touring with productions, he’s working on his debut album Love Is, a project he hopes to complete by next summer. He even danced alongside Beyoncé in the motion picture Dreamgirls. With his rigorous Color Purple schedule, it’s hard to believe he finds time to do anything other than eat, sleep and perform. (Within the last few months, they’ve performed in various cities across the country, including nightly for six weeks in Washington, D.C.) But the hard work and effort is all a part of the process. And James doesn’t mind it one bit. “I am exactly where I’m supposed to be at this moment,” he says. “I am thankful, and I love what I do. I have no complaints.” Catch Atlanta’s native son, along with the entire “amazing cast,” of The Color Purple: The Musical about Love at The Fabulous Fox Theatre, Sept. 15-27.

Continued from page 14 also helped him stay true to his own musical interests. Blessed with a genuinely warm singing voice, James got his start in the Atlanta Boys Choir while in middle school and eventually, paid his way through college with a vocal stipend from the Morehouse College Glee Club (MCGC). Ironically, it was his passion for music that led him to his destiny as an actor. While a student, he appeared on “The Cosby Show” with the MCGC as the ensemble choir that backed Claire Huxtable (Phylicia Rashad) when she sang at her college reunion. But if you ask him to choose one talent over the other, you’ll be hard-pressed for a decisive winner. “For me, they work together,” James explains. “I don’t think one is better than the other. Sometimes the fire may burn a little more in one area than another, so you put your energy and attention into it at the moment. Then the fire picks up again in another area and you start focusing on that as well. I think singing,

The Fox’s Fortune I
The Fox Theatre is the only theater in the United States that has a full-time Restoration Department. It was established by Atlanta Landmarks Inc., a non-profit organization that is credited with saving the building from demolition in 1974 and has managed operations of the Fox since. “[They] believed in this building … It’s [because of ] this dedication and expectation of the citizens of Atlanta that the restoration department exists … and why a patron is guaranteed to be 50 EncoreAtlantA.com
transported to 1929 every time he/she walks in,” says Fortune, who’s been the department head for the last eight and a half years. Fortune’s efficient staff of eight includes decorative painters, who have their own in-house paint shop, and an archivist — all of whom work very closely with the Operations Department. Their job is a delicate balance, making sure the building is maintained according to national historic preservation standards and that it can operate as a competitive

f you were to ask Molly Fortune what her favorite part of The Fabulous Fox Theatre is, she’d answer, “The second dress circle.” She calls it the soul of the building. Every time she enters and takes in the deep, intimate space, she wonders what would have happened if no one had cared to save this now National Landmark. Luckily, it’s not a thought she has to seriously contemplate. By Suehyla El-Attar

Fortune feels a responsibility to Atlanta, to preserve this exquisite structure. As audiences come to the Fox to enjoy a play, a tour, a wedding or a special night out, she hopes they feel a sense of ownership and pride. “We don’t have a sense of place,” Fortune says. “People in our generation, we move around. We move around a lot. In a society where we’re on our Blackberries and our e-mails, sitting in front of our Wii all day, something like the Fox connects us.” Suehyla El-Attar is an actor/writer based in Atlanta, Georgia. entertainment venue for the enjoyment of nearly 750,000 patrons annually. After taking ownership, Atlanta Landmarks Inc. leadership agreed they needed a strategy to ensure they would never go into debt trying to restore the building. Typically, organizations launch capital campaigns when repairs are necessary and make structural improvements all at one time. Instead, Atlanta Landmarks developed a pay-as-you-go model. This model ensured no need for fundraisers, cash reserves, nor long-term closures for catch-up renovations, which venues waiting to do a major fix every 10 years were forced to do. “They thought, ‘Maybe, one day, we’ll have a capital campaign,’” Fortune says. “But, they never did.” The unique model allows for pragmatic prioritizing and continuous effort, which costs far less money. She adds, “I like the model. A lot.” Between $1 million to $1.5 million a year is spent on restoration projects. The money is not supplied by private donations nor public grants. It is raised from a $2 surcharge the Fox places on every ticket and “damn good investing by the board,” Fortune says with a proud smile. So far, $34 million dollars worth of work has been done. Beyond the improvements audiences can see, like the furniture conservation in the lobbies and lounges, handrails or painting of the sky, there are many improvements Fortune’s department has made behind the scenes. For example, her staff maintains a stateof-the-art archive, which includes the histories of state and local theaters, and

THE OTHER SIDE OF
SOUTH CAROLINA
I must confess: Like most Atlantans, when I head to South Carolina, I visit its coastal cities to dip my toes in the Atlantic or head to Charleston to soak up some “cult-cha.” But recently, I took the road less traveled through the historic heart of South Carolina, and was blown away by the richness of what I found. If you’re feeling up for a roadtrip, here’s my hot list of things to do. 1. HANG OUT WITH LOCAL ARTISTS
People have been crazy for clay in Edgefield since the late 1700s. The most famous local artist was Dave the Potter, a slave who worked in a plantation pottery yard called “Pottersville,” 54 ENCOREATLANTA.COM
and often inscribed short poems or couplets on his work. I learned all about Dave and Pottersville stoneware at the Edgefield Pottery Museum, where I met resident artist/historian Stephen Ferrell and his assistant Ed Redmond. If you fall in love with the stoneware, commission Ferrell to create a custom piece for you. 803-637-2060; edgefield pottery.com Around the corner from the museum is Jane Bess Pottery. Bess’ candy-colored clay works are designed to be functional, so only food-friendly glazes are used on the pitchers and plates. Pick up one of her palmetto tree ornaments as an inexpensive souvenir. 803-6372434; janebesspottery.com
KRISTI CASEY SANDERS
You never know what you’ll find when you venture off the beaten path BY KRISTI CASEY SANDERS
Roughly two and a half hours northeast of Edgefield, in Lancaster, there’s a whole crew of creative people to discover at Bob Doster’s Backstreet Studio, Gallery and Garden. You’ve probably seen Doster’s work — he created the three-story, metal sculpture that soars through the elevator area at Lenox Square’s Saks Fifth Avenue store. His studio is filled with miniature models and jagged portions of works in progress, complex metal-cutting machines and student-made collaborations. Next door, he has a gallery of outsider and folk art, ranging from Cherry Doster’s funky, funny “Trophy Wives” to Keith “Little Bear” Brown’s traditional Catawba Indian pottery. Don’t miss the eclectic sculpture garden, which has some shady spots for quiet contemplation. 803-285-9190; bobdoster.com 2. Explore life in the wild, South Carolina-style
I’m not a hunter, but I have to admit that I had a blast playing the virtual reality hunting game at the Wild Turkey Center and Winchester Museum in Edgefield. If you’re a roadside attraction junkie like I am, this museum is a gold mine. It’s dedicated to the restora56 EncoreAtlantA.com

tion, management and hunting of the wild turkey, all five breeds of them. The dioramas exploring the evolution of turkey calls and how generations of hunters have stalked the wily birds are fun and educational. There’s also a theater where you’re immersed in the sights and sounds of a spring forest at the crack of dawn, waiting for turkeys to come down from their roosts. (Thankfully, there’s no Bambi moment where anything gets shot.) Plus, there’s a 100-acre outdoor education center with nature trails and a wetland habitat site for them to explore, as well. 803637-3106; nwtf.org It’s difficult to picture what life must have been like in pre-Revolutionary War America, when our ancestors were carving a life for themselves out of the wilderness. But you can catch a glimpse of it at Historic Brattonsville, a 775-acre historic site two and a half hours north of Edgefield. Costumed interpreters share what life was like, both in the plantation house and in the slave quarters from the 1760s to the late 19th century. Parents can download an online scavenger hunt designed to help kids imagine what life would have been like. Adult film buffs can create their own scavenger hunt to discover which areas of the museum

Drink up!
Celebrate the opening of Gordon Biersch’s second Atlanta location by enrolling in their Passports Rewards program. For every dollar spent, members earn Passport Points, which may be redeemed for dining benefits, including special dinners, shopping privileges with the restaurant’s retail partners or fantasy vacation packages. Cards are honored at all restaurants managed by the Gordon Biersch Brewery Restaurant Group, which includes Big River Grille and A1A Ale Works, at locations across the U.S. Membership benefits include preferred seating, special offers and invitations to “members only” events. Sign up: Cost is $20, which members get back in restaurant credit with their permanent card. Sign up at gordonbierschrestaurants.com or in person. Two Atlanta locations: 848 Peachtree St. NE, Midtown, 404-870-0805; 3242 Peachtree Rd. NE, Buckhead, 404-264-0253.
trav e l + l e is u r e
Let’s roll ... This weekend, instead of sitting on the couch, sign up for a three-hour downtown Atlanta City Segway Tour. Before you know it, you’ll be zipping around the city, learning about its founding, civil rights history and seeing some of the incredible amenities added for the 1996 Olympics. Best of all, Segways don’t tire you out. To move, you simply shift your balance to the front or back. Note to “Ghost Hunters” fans: They offer an evening “Ghosts and Legends” tour, too. Get on board: Downtown tours depart from 50 Upper Alabama St., Ste. 256, daily at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Price is $70/per person. Group rates also are available. For more information, visit citysegwaytours.com/ atlanta or call 404-588-2274.
GIFT + DÉCOR
In this economy, giving someone a gift card is a dicey investment, because you don’t know if the company will go out of business. And generic gifts don’t express anything. So if you really want to show someone you care, check out the eclectic selection at Donna Van Goghs. From fine oil paintings and folk art, jewelry and glass art to metalwork, T-shirts, handmade cards and kids’ books, the store is stocked with locally made art, which means that every purchase helps support Atlanta artists. And the shop offers free gift-wrapping, which is a nice touch. Get artsy: 1651 McLendon Ave. NE, Candler Park, Atlanta; 404-370-1003; donnavangoghs.com. 60 EncoreAtlantA.com
