I
f you know Diana DeGarmo only from her “American Idol” days, you haven’t been paying attention. In the past five years, she’s jumped head first into theater, working on Broadway, off-Broadway and all across the country.
She’s grown a bit, too. She’s 23 now, has her own place in Nashville, where she works as a songwriter, and is happy to ride the musical theater train for as long as it will carry her. Ideally, she says, she’d spend half her year doing theater and half writing songs. DeGarmo’s stage career may have been predestined. As a teenager chasing “Idol” success at a cattle-call audition she sang, “And I’m Telling You I’m Not Going.” A show tune. From Dreamgirls. DeGarmo’s role in 9 to 5 brings her full circle. She’s back at the Fox Theatre, where she did both Annie and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat as a child, and she’s closer to Snellville, where her mom still lives and from where her career was launched.
She began getting serious about theater when she was 17 or 18 and had just left her post-“Idol” record label. She wasn’t sure what she wanted to do or who she wanted to be, she says. Then came a call from the American Musical Theatre of San Jose, asking her to audition for Maria in West Side Story. DeGarmo, typically self-effacing, says she had no idea what she was doing. But she got the role and her Actors’ Equity card, an all-important pass that brands her as a professional theater artist. That was in November 2005. “Once I did that,” she says, “my name got tossed into the musical theater pool.” An ethos of “let’s go with the flow and see what happens” has led to role after role after role. because I am a huge Dolly Parton fan. Who would have thought that a year later I’d be playing the role she made famous?” DeGarmo was so excited to get the job that she leaked her casting via Twitter before producers could make an official announcement. The challenge of playing Doralee, she says, is to avoid making her a caricature. Doralee is, essentially, Dolly Parton, “but you could go too far with that.
You have to remember that Doralee has a heart and everything comes from that place. She’s a real person.” As is DeGarmo. She’s funny, raucous, open, honest, enthusiastic, realistic and optimistic. She’s been talking to potential collaborators about writing a country musical and adds, “I think the challenge is great, and I’m up for it.” Doralee, she says, may be the first step in blending her writing and performing passions. Kathy Janich is an Atlanta theater artist and freelance writer. After years in daily newspapers, she’s found a joyous second career as an artistic associate at Atlanta’s Synchronicity Theatre.

She did two stints in the Broadway revival of Hair and played gal pal Penny Pingleton in Hairspray. Off– Broadway, she played Sarah, the sexy, blind librarian, in the cult favorite Toxic Avenger. On the road, she performed the title role in Brooklyn: The Musical; played the Narrator in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat; and did Dorothy in Oz, the Musical, a contemporary take on The Wizard of Oz. She’s also done revues and workshops and sang at Carnegie Hall in 2007 at a Neil Sedaka tribute. Because DeGarmo has largely been cast as a replacement, critics haven’t often reviewed her work. But Toxic Avenger fans were quick to comment online. “Diana DeGarmo is a comic gem who can also bring down the house with her singing voice,” said one. “The star of the show on all levels is Diana DeGarmo,” said another. “What a revelation she is! I never saw her in Hairspray and now I wish I had. She’s very funny and sings everybody else right off the stage.” DeGarmo first encountered Doralee Rhodes, her 9 to 5 character, in the 1980 movie. She saw the Broadway production just before it closed in September 2009. “I waited outside and got all of [the cast’s] autographs,” she recalls with the fervor of a serious fan. “I actually went

he always seemed like the most rock ’n’ roll of the four, musically. But mostly, I respect the person he grew into in his short life, striving to do his part in helping to bring us all together. If you could only play one song John wrote for the rest of your life, which would you choose? If it was just on musical terms, maybe “In My Life” or “Norwegian Wood” — beautiful songs, great melodies, interesting lyrics and chord progressions. But if it was purely on what the song stands for, it would have to be “Imagine.” That song says it all: At the end of the day, we are all one. Continued on page 38

Mr. Manos has been in Atlan ta for more than 40 years. He has produced over 700 works of theater, ballet and opera. He has been recognized with numer ous civic awards, including the Atlanta Critics Award for the devel opment of the art of theater in Atlanta and the Governor’s Award in the Arts. He has been instrumental in the creation of such organizations as the Winter Play Season, Grand Opera in the Park, Just Us Theater Company and the Fall Film Festival – just to name a few! During the early months of the Woodruff Arts Center, Mr. Manos was responsible for 12 productions of theater, ballet and opera in that facility. Mr. Manos is a member of the Broadway League, the Independent Presenters Network and the National Alliance of Musical Theatre Producers. In 1999, Mr. Manos received the Coca-Cola Lifetime Achievement in the Arts Award from the Arts & Business Council of the Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce. In 2005, Mr. Manos was the first recipient of the GAELA Award presented by the Atlanta Coalition of Performing Arts. In 2007, Mr. Manos was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Broadway League. Mr. Manos was married for 45 years to the late Glenn Ryman Manos. He has two sons, Chris Jr. and Nick, a daughter, Ann, and is the very proud grandfather of seven grandsons and four granddaughters.
NICHOLAS F. MANOS President
Mr. Manos is a graduate of the Westminster Schools in Atlanta and the University of North Carolina. His business career spans two decades in sales management with a multi-national employee benefits company. In the fall of 2000, he returned to Atlanta to become the managing director of Theater of the Stars. In 2008, he assumed the role of president. Since 2000, Mr. Manos has been heavily involved with the touring aspect of the company and has been the driving force behind many of the artistic and cultural marvels brought to the Theater of the Stars stage, including Disney's High School Musical, the co-productions of Deaf West’s Big River, The King And I with Sandy Duncan, and Bombay Dreams. Mr. Manos is the founder of the Junior Theatre Festival, an event that takes place every January in Atlanta, and brings drama students from all over the world together to perform, learn and celebrate theater. Mr. Manos has served on the boards of the Houston Grand Opera and Theatre Under The Stars in Houston. He and his wife Laura have three children, Andy, Kate and Sam, and one dog, Peach.

Fox fun facts:
HISTORIC LIGHTING FIXTURES The Atlanta Fox Theatre lighting was a crowning achievement in its day. The light bulb was still relatively new and modern, yet the Fox’s fixtures were created to give the illusion of antiquity, foreign mystique and opulence. Some fun Fox lighting facts: The theatre lighting was designed to enhance the overall ambience of the architecture; it was not merely for the sake of illumination. Original blueprints for the Fox specify bulb wattage for each fixture. The Sterling Bronze Company was responsible for providing most of the original lighting still seen in the theatre’s interior today.
The auditorium’s ultramarine blue sky contains 96 twinkling stars that are 11-watt bulbs fixed above four-inch crystals that form actual constellations as they would be seen from the North African sky; the drifting clouds are produced by a special projector. The jeweled proscenium lanterns hanging over the stage are reproductions of the chandeliers hanging in the St. Louis Fox Theatre. 30 EncoreAtlantA.com

FOR YOUR INFORMATION The Theatre A fully restored 1929 “Movie Palace,” the Fox Theatre, with 4,678 seats, is a multiple-purpose facility, housing Broadway shows, ballet, symphonies, concerts, movies, and private corporate events. Private Rooms The Fox Theatre has three private rental spaces, with accommodations for 25 to 1,200 guests. Our Egyptian Ballroom and Grand Salon are beautifully decorated and can be set up to your specifications. The brand new Landmarks Lounge is adjacent to the lobby and is perfect for a small pre-show and intermission event. All rooms include the Fox Theatre’s professional sales and coordination staff. The Box Office is open for walk up ticket sales Monday-Friday, 10:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m., and Saturday, 10:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. The Fox Theatre Box Office is not open on Sundays unless there is a performance. During Events, the Box Office opens two hours prior to show time. Doors to the Fox open one hour prior to show time. Tickets for all performances at the Fox may be purchased at any TICKETMASTER outlet, by calling TICKETMASTER at 800.745.3000, or by visiting the Fox Theatre Box Office in person during regular Box Office hours. Concessions Concession stands are located in the Spanish Room, adjacent to the main lobby, and on the mezzanine lobby level. Restrooms Restrooms are located on the Main Lobby and Mezzanine Lobby levels. Restrooms are also located on the Gallery level. Restrooms for patrons who are physically challenged are located in the Spanish Room Gift Shop The Fox Theatre operates a gift shop selling history books, T-shirts, sweatshirts, and an assortment of other theatrerelated merchandise. The gift shop is located in the main lobby and is open at each performance. Tours Tours of the Fox Theatre are available through the Atlanta Preservation Center. Tours are conducted Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays at 10:00 a.m. and Saturdays at 10:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. Tours begin in the Peachtree Street Arcade entrance to the theatre. Smoking In accordance with the Fulton County Clean Air Ordinance, the Fox Theatre is a smoke-free facility. Smoking is only permitted in designated areas. Special Needs Ken Shook, Patron Services Director, is our liaison to the disabled community. He can be reached at 404.881.2118 and can provide information on such topics as the locations and prices of accessible seating and other programs for the disabled. The Fox Theatre also has a new brochure detailing all these programs for our patrons with special needs. They are available at the Guest Relations Table. Fox Ambassadors are located at the Guest Relations Table in the main lobby at the Fox Theatre Merchandise Kiosk to offer their assistance, theatre information, and several rental items to enhance your performance enjoyment. An audio clarification device (Phonic Ear) is available for patrons with hearing disabilities. It is available, free of charge, on a first-come, first-serve basis on the evening of a performance, or you may reserve a device by calling the Patron Services Director. A limited number of booster seats are also available free of charge. Binoculars are available for sale. All items require a form of identification to be held until the item is returned. Elevators Elevators are located at the north end of each lobby. The elevators are available during all performances and make it possible to access each lobby without the use of stairs. Parking Parking is available within a four-block radius in all directions of the Fox Theatre. Advanced reserved parking is available for sale at the Fox Box Office or by calling TICKETMASTER at 800.745.3000. The Fox Theatre assumes no responsibility for vehicles parked in any of the privately owned parking lots operating in the Fox Theatre district. Performance Notes All patrons, regardless of age, must have a ticket in order to be admitted to the theatre. Please be aware that not all events are suitable for children. Infants will not be admitted to adult programs/performances. Parents will be asked to remove children who create a disturbance. Latecomers will be seated at the discretion of the management, in conjunction with the wishes of the producers. Please turn off all pagers and cell phones prior to the beginning of each performance. Please limit conversation during the performances. Camera and recording devices are strictly prohibited.

GOLDEN RULES The following brief, but important, article has been published to assist in audience etiquette. To this day we get at least one phone call a week asking for reprint rights. These calls and letters come from orchestras and theatres, opera and ballet companies all over the United States and Canada, big and little troupes alike. The message, telegraphed between the lines, seems to be an S.O.S.: American audiences are out of control. Are they? Here’s a refresher course. Please read on, and remember, part of one’s pact as an audience member is to take seriously the pleasure of others, a responsibility fulfilled by quietly attentive (or silently inattentive) and selfcontained behavior. After all, you can be as demonstrative as you want during bows and curtain calls. 1. Go easy with the atomizer; many people are highly allergic to perfume and cologne. 2. If you bring a child, make sure etiquette is part of the experience. Children love learning new things. 3. Unwrap all candies and cough drops before the curtain goes up or the concert begins. 4. Make sure cell phones, beepers, and watch alarms are OFF. And don't jangle the bangles. 5. The overture is part of the performance. Please cease talking at this point. 6. Note to lovebirds: When you lean your heads together, you block the view of the person behind you. Leaning forward also blocks the view. 7. THOU SHALT NOT TALK, or hum, or sing along, or beat time with a body part. 8. Force yourself to wait for a pause or intermission before rifling through a purse, backpack, or shopping bag. 9. Yes, the parking lot gets busy and public transportation is tricky, but leaving while the show is in progress is discourteous. 10. Honor the old standby: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.

Lennon and McCartney were known for their friendly rivalry. Is there any of that between you and Joey? Do you guys hang out on the tour bus, kicking each other’s butts at Beatles: Rock Band? I don’t think it’s so much rivalry as it is that we’re the two main Beatles geeks, so we’re each other’s cheerleaders and feed off each other’s strengths. He’s more intune sound-wise as the band’s musical director, and I help with our costume choices, selecting period correct guitars, sets, etc. So we complement each other in a lot of ways. What’s the best aspect of getting to be a part of the ultimate tribute to the ultimate rock ’n’ roll band? Getting to be a rock star on stage, then just being me off-stage. I truly get the best of both worlds! joey curatolo Everyone has their favorite Beatle. What do you love about Paul? His voice, his looks and his famous charm. It would have to be “The Long & Winding Road,” because I love its haunting melody. What’s your favorite Beatles era in terms of the music and fashion? “Rubber Soul” through “Sgt. Pepper.” After the touring years, the band went into the studio to write and record many of the classics we all sing today. I think they became more musical in the studio, where there were no distractions. With the release of “Sgt. Pepper,” they not only changed the way we listened to pop music, but what we were wearing while we listened. What’s the best aspect of getting to be a part of the ultimate tribute to the ultimate rock ’n’ roll band? Being able to perform this music and deliver the message of peace and love to younger generations. I also love being able to satisfy my passion for the greatest music ever written and recorded. “It’s never too late, and it’s never too soon,” says Annika Ferris, CFP, CIMA, and partner at Brightworth, an independent wealth management firm that serves entrepreneurs and high networth families and individuals. “Really, as soon as you start earning money you should be figuring out what to do with it. It can be a short-term goal, such as saving for three years to buy a car, or long-term goals like retirement. But working with a financial planner is a good way to help you implement your goals.” Donna G. Barwick, J.D., CFP, and senior fiduciary officer for Wilmington Trust, one of the nation’s leading wealth management companies, says that it’s a common misperception that only rich people need planners. “Yes, there are those in the high income brackets that need a comprehensive financial plan that covers budgets, retirement, estate planning, income tax strategies and other issues,” she says. “[Of course,] not everyone needs such a comprehensive financial plan but they can still use the services of a financial planner.” So even if you’re not Donald Trump, what can a financial planner do for you? Ferris says. “So many people don’t know where their money is going, and that’s because they don’t have a plan. A planner also will help implement an investment strategy. The general wisdom was that everyone needs about three to six months of cash for unforeseen circumstances,” she continues. “[But] I think now, it’s better to plan for a year.” In addition to having liquid cash on hand, it’s important to start building a nest egg. Where and how money will be invested depends on each person’s individual situation, she says. “You need short-term investments such as money market funds or CDs or a combination of both. And then for long-term goals like retirement, you should look into stocks, mutual funds, bonds.” Of course, many would say that short of keeping your money under your mattress, investing any money is a gamble. While that may not be exactly true, a financial planner will help determine how much risk you’re able to bear. The general rule is the greater the risk, the greater the return. Knowing how much you can lose would have saved a lot of people – middle class and rich – these last couple of years.

Financial planners also may help with taxes, by informing you of little-known tax deductions or deferrals, such as IRA and annuities, as well as helping to set up a charitable giving strategy. Ferris says, “People want to give some of their money to their favorite causes and [they] can do that even if [they] don’t have millions.” Barwick says that it is as important — if not more — to correctly choose a financial planner as it is to decide on a financial plan. “Everyone should have a financial plan,” she says. “So the issue becomes do you need a financial planner who sets up a comprehensive plan and monitors it for you or do you need a basic plan that you will manage yourself? And, then you need to know about the planner’s compensation. It’s very important for a person to understand how his or her planner is being compensated. It could be fee-based or a flat charge, or you could be dealing with someone who makes money by selling you products. There’s a big ethical debate in the industry about compensation.” In addition to understanding how the planner is compensated, Barwick suggests doing some research on the planner, including getting recommendations. “Find out the person’s background and what professional licenses and 44 EncoreAtlantA.com
designations they have. If all those people who lost millions with Bernie Madoff had just scratched the surface a little bit, they would have seen that a certified CPA firm didn’t audit his reports. That should have told them something. Use common sense.” Both women agree that it is beneficial to meet with a planner early on and to put together a financial outline that will grow and be ready for execution, when needed. “As soon as you start a job, you start making choices about your retirement, your life insurance and your 401K, because it’s part of the benefit package,” says Barwick. “You really are planning your financial future from that point on. Everyone needs to pay attention to their money.” And, with a proper plan, one doesn’t need a lot of money to create wealth. “Do you know how much a dollar compounded over a number of years turns out to be?” Ferris asks. “You’d be surprised.” Mary Welch is a freelance writer whose work appears in a variety of newspapers, magazines and websites including The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. M
y mid-life crisis came a little early. I was 35 years old, going through a divorce and trying to get back into the swing of having a social life after years as a married homebody. I knew my soul was starving, but for what? Then I found improv comedy, and it was like reuniting with a long-lost love. I’d grown up on the stage, performing first with the Atlanta Boy Choir, then with the Atlanta Workshop Players, Neighborhood Playhouse and other community theaters. But by the time I turned 20, I’d sold my soul to rock ‘n’ roll and gotten engaged. It would be 15 years before I’d step onto another theatrical stage. I initially took an 46 EncoreAtlantA.com
improv class for the release — to get out of the house and out of my head, to cut loose, meet new people and have a few laughs. But as I learned the craft, I became increasingly addicted to the challenge of improvised acting, singing and even dancing. Surprisingly, I was far from the only non-whippersnapper delving into a new art form for the first time. From 30-something accountants to 60-something professors, I met many people well past their college years who were turning to the arts to get their creative juices flowing. These days, Atlanta has plenty of places designed to help grownups get their artistic groove back.
