Behind the scenes with Les Misérables’ rivals

es Misérables changed Robert Evan’s life. In 1989, the University of Georgia football player took a date to see the musical at The Fox Theatre. “I didn’t know what I was going to see, and it floored me emotionally,” Evan remembers. At that moment, the business major decided he needed to be on stage. Within a year, he was performing with Chris Manos’ Theater of the Stars and had earned his Actor’s Equity card. Three months after moving to New York in 1992, he made his Broadway debut — as one of Les Misérables’ students on the barricade. He is excited to return to the Fox Theatre as Jean Valjean, the musical’s heroic lead. Playing opposite Evan is Robert Hunt as Javert, the lawman who obsessively pursues and persecutes Valjean. “I’ve played all but three male roles in the show,” Hunt says. Javert is his favorite. “There’s a description of who Javert is in the book. This character was born in a prison, so he and Valjean really start in the same place. He’s kind of aloof and always is watching from the outside, only joining the action when he chooses to be part of the action; the ego is a big thing with Javert.” 10 Encore Atlanta

Both of you play iconic roles that have been interpreted by many other actors. What do you feel sets your Javert and Valjean apart from others’? Robert Evan: I like to be as honest as I can. Not that other Valjeans haven’t been honest, but I try to live in the moment and be spontaneous. The role requires a lot of different emotions and a journey. In the beginning of the show, you’re going to see kind of a scary guy. Then, when he morphs into the person he wants to be, especially with Cosette, you see him as a loving father. He’s supposed to be one of the strongest guys in Europe. So I think [my] football physique helps a lot. Robert Hunt: [Javert] is always seen as being so stern and not having human emotion, so the challenge is making him seem like a real person, and have people understand why he does what he does. I really feel like mine is different because I approach it from that human side. I like to create characters from the inside out. I think some people get caught in that fact he was in the military and is very rigid, and just play that. I know you can’t judge the character. You can’t think they’re bad or evil. It’s just that what they do may not line up with what’s [socially] acceptable. What unique quality does your stage adversary bring to their part? Evan: Rob will be my fifth Javert, and that’s not counting the understudies; if you count them, it’s probably 12. I’ve always gotten along very well with my Javerts. (The first Javert I played against became one of my best friends.) We have good chemistry together, and he’s a wonderful singer. Our voices are similar enough that it makes it interesting [when we duet]. And, Rob sees a lot of different colors. … [His Javert] is not just a one-dimensional caricature. Dear Patrons and Subscribers:

Welcome to the fourth show in our 2008 Season, the timeless classic, Les Misérables. This exciting new production of the passionate and epic musical tells a tale of love, loss, triumph and redemption. Based on Victor Hugo’s classic novel, Les Mis is the longest running musical and is a captivating story for every heart. Following Les Misérables, we move on to the highly anticipated Disney’s High School Musical 2, Nov. 6-16, and we finish with Tarzan, Jan. 16-25, 2009. We hope you are enjoying our season of new productions, classics and family entertainment. It is part of our mission as a not for profit organization to enhance the perpetuation of musical theater, and the performing arts generally, and in that process, give Atlanta talent a stage upon which to perform. We hope you will consider supporting Theater of the Stars as we continue to produce large scale musicals. The work we do is unique to Atlanta – and becomes more and more expensive to create. Through making a gift to TOTS, you can help us insure that masterpieces, like Les Mis, continue to live on in our city. One way to support us, is to join our Star Circle. Members of the Star Circle are provided with exclusive opportunities to learn about behind the scenes, have access to the Landmarks Lounge, and receive a group of benefits that are not available to the general public. (For instance, Star Circle members can make reservations with our restaurant partner Baraonda before Theater of the Stars performances.) Please give us a call at (404) 252-8960 to learn more about the Star Circle today. Membership is renewable each season and will insure you are invited to special events before the start of 2009-2010.

Profiles Joe Hall

Board Member since 2002 Co-Sponsor for Les Misérables

How did you first become involved with Theater of the Stars? My original involvement was through my father-in-law, Jack Wall, who was the president of the Board for 28 years. The Manos family is one of the dearest family friends of the Walls. On my very first visit to Atlanta in 1983 from England (Hall is originally from Liverpool), I met Chris and his wife, Glenn. In 2002, I was surprised Jack, Joe, Emilie, Dan and Missie Hall (from left). when Nick Manos came to see me and asked if I would serve on the Board. I was honored to carry on the legacy Jack Wall started, so I agreed. It has been great seeing Theater of the Stars progress in the five years I’ve been on the Board and to watch the company flourishing this year. Did you attend theater before becoming involved with Theater of the Stars? Most of my experience was enjoying the work of Andrew Lloyd Webber in London – and Les Misérables, which I’ve seen seven times. My real interest in American musicals began when my then girlfriend (and now wife) Missie suggested we see Guys and Dolls at the National Theatre in London in 1983. It was a great production. What was it about Guys and Dolls that spoke to you? It was a combination of great music and storytelling. It is a bit like West Side Story in many ways. You have an opportunity to experience parts of the seedy side of city life through the eyes of very likable rogue characters. What are some of your favorite Theater of the Stars performances? West Side Story is probably my favorite. I’ve also enjoyed My Fair Lady and Dreamgirls. Do you have any favorite Theater of the Stars memories? I am sad I never got to see any of the performances at Chastain when it was Theater Under the Stars. It was lovely to experience the 50th Anniversary celebration and to be a part of it. It was meaningful to celebrate Chris’ phenomenal work and to see how respected he is locally and around the country for bringing musical theater to Atlanta. What is something, outside of your professional life, that no one knows about you? I was born in Malta. My father was a paratrooper, so we were stationed there, and he used to go away on exercises for a couple of weeks at a time. Malta was going through a period when the country wanted independence from British rule, so they weren’t too keen on Great Britain over there. My father used to leave my mother and me with a gun. Fortunately, she never had to use it. Have you been back to Malta? No. I tried to go back after university, when I was traveling around with a friend. Being very British, we would put a kettle on in the morning for tea. So, one day we put the kettle on and went to shave and a woman came running out and told us our tent was on fire. All of the money we were going to spend on the ferry from Italy to Malta was spent on a new tent and supplies. What would you tell someone who doesn’t know anything about Theater of the Stars? Somehow, you assume that to see really good theater, you have to go to New York or London. Theater of the Stars proves you don’t have to go to the biggest theaters in the country to see energetic and wonderful professional productions. Most people in Atlanta don’t realize what they have on their doorstep in Theater of the Stars, and how lucky we are to have a form of entertainment that rivals anything else they can find in the country. And … you can even keep up with all the Braves news.

Profiles

Bette Rose Bowers Subscriber since 2004 Co-Sponsor for Les Misérables How did you become involved with Theater of the Stars? My daughter, Chelle Blancato, and I like musicals. We would go to shows together back when she was a teenager. For her 16th birthday, we saw Cats. Recently, in the past five to eight years, we started going regularly again. We enjoy it. We love the shows and it gives us time to be together. Our favorite all-time show is Les Misérables. I can’t count the number of times we’ve seen it. We’ve been every time it has been in Atlanta and several times on Broadway. Last night’s performance of Mamma Mia! was wonderful. The audience really loved it, but Les Mis is the best. The music and the storyline can’t be outdone. I can’t wait to see Theater of the Stars produce it this season. Bette Rose Bowers with her husband Mike.

What are some of your other favorites? Chicago. Beauty and the Beast – there is something so sweet about it. I loved the production of Big River with sign language. It was incredible. The whole concept behind the show, with one person signing and one person singing, was incredibly well done and touching. With your love for musical theater, did you ever think of performing on stage? I had an aunt and uncle in show biz and I thought about going that route as a dancer. I can’t sing. My Mom taught dance, so I grew up dancing. I was an army brat and lived in a lot of places, but considered Virginia home. I met my husband, Mike (who is from Atlanta), when he was a cadet at West Point. In September, we will return to West Point for his 45th class reunion. This weekend (6/17/08), I’ll be in New York and will go to the theater if I can, and will see Les Mis once again at home. I try not to miss seeing shows when I am so close to Broadway, as well as when I am in Atlanta. What is something few people know about you? I enjoy riding the tractor and mowing the pasture on our farm. I like to read, a lot. I easily can read a book a week. I enjoy Barbara Delinsky and Deborah Smith, an author from Georgia. I could open my own library. We have books everywhere. What would you tell someone about Theater of the Stars if they have never seen one of our shows? They need to go and experience Theater of the Stars at least once. And, after they’ve gone one time, I feel certain they’ll continue going. It is a fun way to spend an evening. The Fox is fabulous, as they say. I love to hear Chris come out and give the baseball scores. He makes it so much more personal for us. Chris has made attending the theater feel like a really special, special thing for us.

Hunt: I’ve played opposite maybe eight Valjeans. I think what Rob is doing wonderfully [is] trying to control the animal within, so there’s a lot of danger hanging on the scenes. It’s wonderful working with him and seeing him make these active choices that help urge the scene along. I find him a very generous, very smart actor and a great singer. We butt heads all through the show, and he’s a great sparring partner.

Need a French fix? Encore Atlanta suggests you visit these oh so French locales: • Learn French, enjoy foreign films or learn more about the culture at Alliance Française d’Atlanta, a non-profit French-American Culture Center. afatl.com • The Louvre Atlanta exhibit at the High Museum of Art displays masterpieces from Paris’ Louvre Musée – some of which have never before been seen in America. louvreatlanta.org • Pretend you’re in the South of France at Anis Café and Bistro. The café offers Provençal versions of Mediterranean food and a warm, cozy atmosphere. anisbistro.com • Atmosphere Restaurant was named Atlanta Magazine’s “Best French Restaurant.” The menu features modern takes on traditional French cuisine. atmospherebistro.com • The French American Brasserie offers fusion cuisine, rooftop dining and live jazz music every Thursday night. fabatlanta.com

What is your favorite moment in the show? Evan: There are a lot of great ones. I love the “Epilogue.” In the final moment, before Valjean dies, he sings this sweet little piece. You work so hard in the show, and it’s the end of the journey, and it affects the audience so powerfully. I also love “Bring it Home,” but I wouldn’t say it’s my favorite. It’s the audience’s favorite; they wait for it. Hunt: That’s a hard question to answer, because my favorite moments have changed as I’ve changed as a person and an actor. The first time I was a Javert understudy and got to go onstage on Broadway — the feeling I had being in a starring role, feeling the [intro] music under my feet and feeling the audience out there … I still think about that a lot. But, I think my favorite moments right now are the singing confrontation between the two of us, and working my way through the suicide at the 24 Encore Atlanta

end, because it’s always a challenge. It’s written so well, and the words are so juicy; it’s so exciting. But we’ll see — when I get to Atlanta, I may love something else. Les Misérables plays The Fabulous Fox Theatre Sept. 19-28.

The

Phantom of the

Fox BY KRISTI CASEY SANDERS

J

“‘The Phantom of the Fox’ is actually what many people call me,” Patten says. “I know the building so well, I can get to one end to the other by strange ways, without being seen.” Patten’s knowledge of the building’s layout and infrastructure comes honestly. As a founding member of Atlanta Landmarks Inc., Patten played a leading role in the 1974 “Save the Fox” movement. After the organization assumed ownership of the Fox, Patten became the theater’s technical director. Over the years, he has helped restore and maintain the building’s electrical, sound, lighting, projection, air conditioning and heating systems. Patten always loved The Fox Theatre — it was the main reason he moved 26 ENCORE ATLANTA

to Atlanta after World War II — but he never expected to move in. “I was having problems where my home was in College Park, because I was very close to the airport,” Patten recalls. “My plan was to buy a condominium downtown. Some people within Atlanta Landmarks Inc. said, ‘You know the building so well. Isn’t there some place suitable for you to live [inside]?’” Patten thought about the proposal and knew exactly where to start. The Ancient Arabic Order of the Mystic Shrine, The Fox Theatre’s original tenants, had office space off the Fox’s ballrooms that wasn’t being used. Out of that space, he created a three-story, 3,640-sq. ft. apartment. He walled off an archway leading into the Grand

oe Patten’s favorite musical is The Phantom of the Opera. But when the show comes to town, he never has to buy a ticket. From his bedroom, he can walk into The Fox Theatre’s auditorium, where he always has a seat. Like the musical’s phantom, Patten’s home literally is in the theater.

Salon and converted a bathroom into an entryway, preserving a private gated entrance off Ponce de Leon Avenue. “I started reconstructing this in 1978 at my expense, because I didn’t have to buy a condominium,” Patten says. “Then I gave it to Atlanta Landmarks. They own it, but I have the right to live here the rest of my life without paying rent.” Patten’s presence in the Fox is credited with stopping a pre-dawn electrical fire that broke out in the building’s attic in 1996, and has provided the building with much-needed security. “My living here enabled me to really enjoy the building more than I had when I [lived elsewhere],” Patten says. Living in the Fox also allowed Patten to complete his true life’s work: restoring the Fox’s Mighty Möller organ. Since childhood, Patten has been fascinated by pipe organs. Growing up in Lakeland, Fla., Patten used to hang out with the church organist. “There was a theater organ in Tampa, Fla., and my parents knew the [owners],” Patten remembers. “My parents spoke to them, and they agreed to open the theater for us on Saturday mornings. The organist and I would ride over in her Model A Ford and play.” 28 Encore Atlanta

Lakeland had three church organs. Whenever a repairman came to town to fix or tune an organ, Patten assisted him. “[During] World War II, gasoline and tires and anything associated with transportation was very hard to find, so organ repairmen could not make the trip from Jacksonville to Lakeland,” Patten says. “I had learned from them over the years, and I began working on them. More and more people found out about my talent, and I began to repair organs all over Central Florida.” In January 1963, Patten organized some members of the American Theatre Organ Society, and they approached The Fox Theatre’s management about fixing its 1929 organ, which had fallen into disrepair. “I was given permission to repair it,” Patten remembers. “In November of 1963, we reintroduced the pipe organ. From that point on, it has been used on a regular basis.” It only took Patten nine months to get the organ in playable shape, but it took him more than 40 years to get it to its original condition. Over the years, he has replaced nearly seven miles (36,000 feet) of wire, changed the voltage of the electro-pneumatic system so that each stop of the organ sounds evenly,

A tile backsplash is reminiscent of the theater’s tile work; the apartment has its own organ; an antique bank safe supports plants in the kitchen; windows

overlook Ponce de Leon; the Phantom behind one of his secret passages (from left to right).

From a mechanic’s standpoint, Patten is optimistic about the organ’s future. “A hundred years from now or 200 years from now or 1,000 years from now, the organ can be rebuilt, because we’re dealing with leather, wood and metal,” Patten says. “These instruments can be repaired or replaced.” Unlike Patten. The Fox Phantom’s legacy truly is unique.

replaced pipes and added instruments, including a 6-ft. Baldwin grand piano he donated to the Fox. “There are six big rooms that house the organ pipe work and the various instruments it has,” he says. When an organist pulls a stop on the console, it allows him or her to play the instruments housed on either side of the stage remotely.

Continued from page 8 His character is deeply flawed, but real, which is a hallmark of Tyler Perry shows. “He is writing through his pain that he’s experienced through life,” Williams says. “He’s writing about the human race as opposed to the black race.” Williams hopes the audience will learn from these human stories. “Don’t take yourself too seriously. Look at yourself on this stage. Identify with it, [make] changes and [show] some altruism, unselfish concern for the welfare for others. “Love can conquer all if you have good sense.” Tyler Perry’s The Marriage Counselor plays at The Fabulous Fox Theatre Sept. 11-14.

Atlanta: The Southern Hollywood/New York “I love Atlanta because you can go from obscurity to the king of Atlanta if you do right by people,” says Palmer Williams Jr. “Atlanta is the land of opportunity. [It] exemplifies the melting pot of America. It is becoming the Southern Hollywood/New York. Atlanta is going to be a force to be reckoned with. We got the music thing down pat, but we have to get the movie and TV thing down, and, thanks to Mr. Perry, we’re on the map now.”

DR. LAURA IS BACK! 9am - 1pm 1160 11

GOLDEN RULES The following brief, but important article has been published to assist in audience etiquette. To this day we get at least one phone call a week asking for reprint rights. These calls and letters come from orchestras and theaters, opera and ballet companies all over the United States and Canada, big and little troupes alike. The message, telegraphed between the lines, seems to be an S.O.S.: American audiences are out of control. Are they? Here’s a refresher course. Please read on, and remember, part of one’s pact as an audience member is to take seriously the pleasure of others, a responsibility fulfilled by quietly attentive (or silently inattentive) and selfcontained behavior. After all, you can be as demonstrative as you want during bows and curtain calls. 1. Go easy with the atomizer; many people are highly allergic to perfume and cologne. 2. If you bring a child, make sure etiquette is part of the experience. Children love learning new things. 3. Unwrap all candies and cough drops before the curtain goes up or the concert begins. 4. Make sure cell phones, beepers, and watch alarms are OFF. And don't jangle the bangles. 5. The overture is part of the performance. Please cease talking at this point. 6. Note to lovebirds: When you lean your heads together, you block the view of the person behind you. Leaning forward also blocks the view. 7. THOU SHALT NOT TALK, or hum, or sing along, or beat time with a body part. 8. Force yourself to wait for a pause or intermission before rifling through a purse, backpack or shopping bag. 9. Yes, the parking lot gets busy and public transportation is tricky, but leaving while the show is in progress is discourteous. 10. Honor the old standby: Do unto others, as you would have them do unto you. 44 Encore Atlanta
