More than Music, a Mosaic Playing host to a variety of community and fundraising events has made Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre far more than a haven for musical variety.
By Kimberly Nogi
It was the middle of winter 2010 and the busy summer concert season at Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre at Encore Park was long gone. But the popular location did not lay dormant. Almost 5,000 people braved the cold to attend a candlelit Christmas Eve service, presented by Passion City Church in December — and just one of the many events that have taken place at the Amphitheatre in the past year. Aside from the array of Orchestra concerts and popular presentations the Amphitheatre showcases from March through October, it is fast becoming the go-to place for a growing number of social and fundraising gatherings. And Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre is giving back to the region it serves. The onsite catering company Ovations hosts a summer fundraising program that enables local not-for-profit groups to earn a percentage of profits generated in concession stands. Last summer 16 not-for-profits — totaling up to 160 people an evening — volunteered to work at concessions locations during programs for Little League baseball teams, Boy Scout troops, high school marching bands and other groups. By summer’s end, Ovations paid out more than $175,000!

“Our program allows us to provide topnotch guest service, as well as to foster an economically meaningful connection to our diverse community,” says Lacy Fink, office manager of Ovations. “It’s a great opportunity for local nonprofits, and we love to see the community involved at the Amphitheatre.” In fact, the neighborhood maintains an important presence at the Amphitheatre year-round. “There’s so much going here in addition to performances,” says Jenny Pollock, the operations manager for Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre. “This Amphitheatre was designed to house great performances, but also to be a hub for the surrounding area. Through graduations, science fairs, fundraisers and benefit concerts, and other events, we are gaining presence and growing our connection with the people we serve.” In the past year, the Amphitheatre has played host to a number of community events, including “Shamrockin’ for a Cure” — a fundraiser for cystic fibrosis research, which included a live ’80s band, catering from Carmine’s Restaurant and Pizzeria, and live and silent auctions.

At the end of April, Fulton Science Academy held its International Heritage Festival at the venue. The festival, which celebrated diversity and the arts, included international cuisine, live entertainment, and a number of booths and exhibits exploring the cultures of the world. In addition to the Christmas Eve service presented by Passion City Church, the Amphitheatre has hosted many other worship services, including special Good Friday and Easter services. Most recently, many local high schools, including Alpharetta and Northview, held commencement services in late May. “Our versatility is one of our greatest strengths,” adds Pollock. “From private parties and corporate functions to theatrical productions, we can accommodate just about anything.” Kimberly Nogi is the publicist of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra.

A recognized leader and supporter of contemporary American music, the Orchestra recently received the 2007 award for Strongest Commitment to New American Music from the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers. In addition, Music Director Robert Spano was named Musical America 2008 Conductor of the Year. With the opening of the 12,000-seat Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre at Encore Park in May 2008, the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra became the first U.S. orchestra to annually perform and present in its concert hall, and in two amphitheaters. In Summer 2008, the Orchestra celebrated 35 years at legendary Chastain Park Amphitheater, the award-winning 6,500-seat venue in Atlanta, during the Orchestra’s annual Delta Classic Chastain concert series.

Big Bad Voodoo Daddy “America’s favorite little big band” the award winning Big Bad Voodoo Daddy (BBVD) has evolved into one of the top leaders among jazz/ swing bands worldwide. Last year they released their 11 album (their eighth studio album to date), HOW BIG CAN YOU GET? The Music of Cab Calloway, a collection of songs that captures the essence of an American icon in a rowdy celebration of musicianship, mischief, genius, street smarts and fun. The album brought a much-needed high-voltage jolt of winning, feel-good energy to a country slogging through tough times…exactly the way that Calloway’s music did in the Depressionera America of his own youth. The Associated Press said the album had, “musicianship over moxie, horn section segments to die for, and drumming even Gene Krupa would proud of,” while the Star Ledger added, “The voodoo daddy is a living tribute to Cab Calloway and the essence of his rowdy spirit…you can still find that same energy-charged performance and intensity.” The critically acclaimed album was another milestone in Big Bad Voodoo Daddy’s 18-year career. Since their arrival on the music scene in 1993 in a legendary residency at Los Angeles’ Brown Derby nightclub, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy’s irresistible live show and aggressive, musically perceptive approach has proven them over time to be the singular standout among the numerous bands that launched the Nineties swing revival. The eight-man group forged a massively successful
fusion of classic American sounds from jazz, swing, Dixieland and big-band music, building their own songbook of original dance tunes that has made them a veteran force that to this day adds new fans by the roomful every time they play. Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, named famously after an autograph by blues legend Albert Collins, has received national critical acclaim, Rolling Stone calls them “retro hepcat cool” while the band’s music has appeared in over 60 movies and television shows. Since making their Hollywood debut as the featured band in the 1996 indie film landmark film Swingers, BBVD has gone on to perform for three American Presidents headline numerous sold out tours, including shows at the Hollywood Bowl, Walt Disney Hall, Lincoln Center, Chastain Park and Constitution Hall,
appear as special guests with the great symphony and pops orchestras of the nation, including their first symphony show with the US Air Force Orchestra and appeared numerous times on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Conan O’Brian and Live with Regis & Kelly, just to name a few career highlights. And now, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy’s songs have passed into the classic American songbook, playing alongside pop standards in film and television, including ABC Disney Specials and reality competitions like Dancing with the Stars. The band will be touring throughout 2011 with plans to start recording their next album (their 12th!) later this year. For tour dates please visit: www.bbvd.com.

Michael Krajewski, the first-ever Principal Pops Conductor at the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, leads concerts with Cirque de la Symphonie and Big Bad Voodoo Daddy this season. He recently sat down for a short interview. When did you first fall in love with music?
When I was six years old, my parents asked me if I’d be interested in taking piano lessons. We had an old upright piano in the basement, and I thought, “Sure, why not?” By the time I was in high school, it was clear to me that music was where I belonged. What’s the state of music education in our schools?
When I grew up, a music teacher came to the classroom and asked “Who wants to learn to play an instrument?” If you showed interest, they passed out instruments and taught you how to play. Now, whenever education cuts are made, the first thing they look at is the arts and music, which are more vital subjects than people realize. Orchestras must
take a more proactive role, and a great example is what our Orchestra has accomplished with its “When I Play Music” campaign supporting music education for children. How do you see your role in instilling a love of music in young audiences?
My specialty is pops concerts here and at our SUPERPops! series at Atlanta Symphony Hall. We perform these primarily so that we can reach a wider segment of the community, because there are those who think that classical music is just not for them. Others are interested if they find out the Orchestra is playing music from the movies, Broadway or Top 40. We’re happy to oblige, because we are a worldclass orchestra. Our goal is to try to reach as many people as we can, so we offer a diverse of range of programs to accomplish that. What appeals to you about collaborating with disparate artists such as The Chieftains and Patti LuPone instead of doing a strictly classical repertoire?
I love it because, although my training is classical, I’ve always had eclectic tastes and been interested in hearing an orchestra stretch beyond its traditional limits. When I conduct SUPERPops! Michael Krajewski concerts, I get immersed in all these different genres. It’s very interesting to be making on his roots, music with the best classical musicians, the music education best Irish musicians, the best jazz musicians, and the allure of the stars of Broadway ... I get to dabble, and the variety is really fun and interesting for me. “Voodoo” magic By Bret Love
“ By the time I was in high school it was clear music was where I belonged”
18 Encore Atlanta
What’s it like working with Big Bad Voodoo Daddy in the season finale?
I’ve worked with Big Bad Voodoo Daddy a number of times, and what I love about the experience is that it really is a cross-generational thing. The older generation that grew up with big band swing loves it because it takes them back to their youthful days of dating and dancing. The guys in Big Bad Voodoo Daddy are younger, and there are young people know who are hip listening to that kind of music. It’s a great way to appeal to a bunch of different generations, with everyone saying, “I love this music!” Bret Love covers the arts, entertainment, restaurants and has his own website at GreenGlobalTravel.com.

Goblin good! The Orchestra’s annual laugh out loud horror show is a ton of fun for the entire family.
You and your children know the story but you’ve never seen Cinderella like this before. Hilarious life-sized puppets, masks, magic and wonderful music assure this nationally acclaimed original production. In this Orchestra adaptation of actor and musician John Lithgow’s spellbinding children’s book, a fickle yet lovable child prodigy brings the sounds and rhythms of an orchestra to sprawling visual life.
