Dear Broadway Patrons,

CAPA has always believed, as the Grinch learns in tonight’s story, that the holiday season “means a little bit more.”

A little bit more light. A little bit more fun. A little bit more love. A little bit more music.

The arts offer all of that to us during the holidays, and we’re immensely proud that you’ve chosen to spend some of this special time of the year with us in one of our beautiful downtown Columbus theatres. (And as a bit of a headsup — over the next few years, several of our spaces will be marking their 100th anniversaries, and I promise we’re going to be inviting you to share those with us in many different ways.) Our theatres are made even more beautiful thanks to your presence in them and thanks to the many talented and dedicated artists who perform on our stages all throughout the year.

Here at CAPA, we are committed to honoring your presence by providing “a little more,” to ensure that you have the most fulfilling, enjoyable shared experience each time you’re in the theatre or at any of our events in the community. When we all come together, that’s when truly special things can happen.

And since I’m feeling a little Seuss-y myself, I’ll close with a verse:

Come in, come in, from the holiday hustle

And where there is hustle there’s sure to be bustle

Instead take this time for some joy and some peace

For both joy and peace could stand to increase

Sit back and relax, it’s a wonderful show

I promise that your heart three sizes will grow

GRINCH HELPS REDISCOVER THE MAGIC OF CHRISTMAS

Theodore Seuss Geisel began his career as a cartoonist in the 1920s after one of his fellow Oxford students noticed him spending more time doodling in class than taking notes. Not long after that, his work began appearing in magazines with the name “Dr. Theophrastus Seuss” next to them, which the cartoonist quickly shortened to “Dr. Seuss.”

Geisel often said that the inspirations for his stories were mysteries to him, with the exception of Cat In The Hat and Grinch. In both of those characters the author found pieces of himself. Michael Frith, Seuss’ editor said “The Cat in the Hat and Ted Geisel were inseparable and the same... This is someone who delighted in the chaos of life, who delighted in the seeming insanity of the world around him.” Just after The Grinch Who Stole Christmas appeared, Geisel explained to Redbook that on the morning of the day after Christmas, he looked in the mirror

and thought to himself that he looked a little “Grinchish.” So he wrote the story about the sour Mr. Grinch to see if he could rediscover something about Christmas he felt he had lost. Now, 67 years later, his timeless Christmas tale comes to Columbus as a full-scale Broadway musical production.

Based on Seuss’ original book and the 1966 Chuck Jones’ half-hour television special, the nearly 90-minute musical came to life in 1994 at the Children’s Theatre Company in Minneapolis. From there it underwent several versions until it appeared on Broadway in 2006, where it broke records during holiday engagements at the Hilton Theatre (2006) and the St. James (2007). Since then, thousands of families across America have been delighted by this heart-warming holiday musical, which The New York Times praised as “100 times better than any bedside story” and the Gannett newspapers hailed as “A genius of a show! A total delight for both kids and adults.”

Dr. Seuss’ How The Grinch Stole Christmas! The Musical features the hit songs “You’re A Mean One, Mr. Grinch” and “Welcome Christmas” (written by Albert Hague and Dr. Seuss) from the original animated series. Max the Dog narrates this classic holiday tale that will entertain the whole family as the mean and scheming Grinch, whose heart is “two sizes too small,” decides to steal Christmas away from the Whos, an endlessly cheerful bunch bursting with holiday spirit. Magnificent sets (John Lee Beatty) and costumes (Robert Morgan) inspired by Dr. Seuss’ original illustrations help transport audiences to the whimsical world of Whoville, while the music and book of Mel Marvin and Timothy Mason breathe new life into this timeless story of the true meaning of Christmas. The 2024 production is directed by Matt August and choreographed by Bob Richard based on the original choreography by John DeLuca and originally created by four-time Tony Award® winning director Jack O’Brien.

YOU CAN ALWAYS

COUNT ON CAPA FOR A FEAST OF FESTIVE AND FUN SHOWS DURING THE HOLIDAYS

The sounds of the season shared on our stages in concerts and performances that offer a little something for everyone.

Among this season’s holiday offerings, CAPA presents the warm blanket of An Acoustic Christmas with Over the Rhine on Tuesday, December 10, at the Southern Theatre; and the joyous camaraderie of the Dave Koz and Friends Christmas Tour on Saturday, December 14, at the Palace Theatre.

An Acoustic Christmas with Over the Rhine

When you listen to Over the Rhine, the Cincinnati-based, husbandand-wife folk-pop duo of Karin Bergquist (vocals, acoustic guitar, tenor guitar) and Linford Detweiler, you quickly fall under the spell of Karin’s timeless voice “which has the power to stop the world in its tracks” (Performing Songwriter). But then the songs start hitting you. Paste Magazine writes, “Over the Rhine creates true confessional masterpieces that know neither border nor boundary” and included Bergquist and Detweiler in their list of 100 Best Living Songwriters. The duo’s beloved holiday season tradition began when Bergquist and Detweiler were a young musical pair, invited to perform some seasonal songs on a public radio station in Cincinnati. The performance

of carols, traditional tunes and poetry was well-received, and the duo began receiving inquiries as to whether they had recorded any of their Christmas songs.

In December of 1996, Over the Rhine recorded and released its first song cycle of Christmas carols, along with a few original tunes, on The Darkest Night of the Year. The duo played a special “Darkest Night” release concert on winter solstice in an old 1300-seat theatre in Cincinnati. Every last seat was full. Folks began snatching up copies and seemed to agree that they hadn’t heard anything quite like it.

Over the Rhine began touring the Midwest at the holiday season, and has since recorded and released additional Christmas material. By the time of their third holiday album of original songs, Blood Oranges in the Snow, in December of 2014, Karin suggested the pair had discovered a new genre of music: Reality Christmas.

It’s likely Detweiler himself said it best: “In 2024, more than 25 years after releasing our first holiday CD, we are still at it. This year, we will be leaning into some harmonies and making an intimate but hopefully holy ruckus. It won’t be all Christmas music: we’ll certainly mix in tunes from many of our records along the way. But hopefully it’s still true: hopefully you haven’t heard anything quite like it.”

Dave Koz and Friends Christmas Tour 2024

Marking the 27th anniversary of the longest-running, jazz-based Christmas tour, Dave Koz & Friends bring a fresh sensibility to this rich musical tradition on their 2024 outing, performing timeless Christmas classics, a Chanukah medley, and hits from each artist’s respective catalogue.

This year’s tour, which will visit 18 cities in less than a month, reunites Koz with long-time musical partner, guitarist/singer Jonathan Butler, and features special guests, saxophonist Vincent Ingala, guitarist Adam Hawley and vocalist Rebecca Jade—all of whom are truly artists on the rise. Don’t miss the show that’s been hailed as “a holiday institution” (The Oakland Press) and “a kickass holiday party” (360°Sound).

In a recording career that spans nearly three decades, Koz has racked up an astoundingly impressive array of honors and achievements: nine Grammy nominations, 11 No. 1 albums on Billboard’s Current Contemporary Jazz Albums chart, numerous world tours, 13 sold-out Dave Koz & Friends At Sea cruises, performances for multiple U.S. presidents, a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and appearances on a multitude of television shows, including “Good Morning America,” “The View,” “The Tonight Show,” “Entertainment Tonight” and more. A Platinum-selling artist, Koz is also known as a humanitarian, entrepreneur, radio host and instrumental music advocate.
