Welcome!
We’re thrilled to welcome you to the kickoff of our 2024-2025 Season! Many of you have been season ticket holders for years and many of you are joining us for the first time. Congratulations! You’re all part of a recordbreaking number of subscribers this year. We’re so glad you’re here and appreciate your support. The growth in the Series enables us to bring shows direct from Broadway, earlier in their cross-country runs, which is fabulous.
It’s great fun to kick off this season with every “Buddy’s” favorite holiday musical. Based on the beloved 2003 film, Elf The Musical features songs by Matthew Sklar (The Prom, The Wedding Singer) and Chad Beguelin (Aladdin, The Prom, The Wedding Singer), with a book by Tony Award winners Thomas Meehan (Annie, Hairspray, The Producers) and Bob Martin (The Drowsy Chaperone). The show is also running on Broadway through the holidays.
Next we’re looking forward to Moulin Rouge! The Musical, our second show of the season. Baz Luhrman’s revolutionary film comes to life on stage, remixed in a new over-the-top musical extravaganza. The original Moulin Rouge cabaret in Paris opened in 1889 and was co-founded by Charles Zidler and Joseph Oller. It is known as the birthplace of the modern form of the can-can dance, which grew into a new form of entertainment and led to the introduction of cabarets across Europe. We look forward to welcoming you to the Moulin Rouge!
Many thanks to the amazing team at Clowes Memorial Hall. Thanks to you for supporting the arts, we can’t do it without you. And Happy Holidays from all of us at Broadway in Indianapolis!

MAKING ELF SPARKLE INSIDE AND OUT
The tour’s director, Sam Scalamoni, reveals the vision behind the musical’s magic.
STORY BY Ruthie Fierberg
The curtain rises, the lights glow, and Santa…realizes the football game he wanted to watch wasn’t taped! His plans foiled, he realizes, “It’s Christmas! Let’s read a Christmas story.” Santa cracks open a book, the world of Elf begins to unfold.
The tour’s director, Sam Scalamoni, collaborated with the musical’s design team specifically to create a pop-up book come to life in his version of Elf Santa’s workshop (designed by Christine Peters) looks like an illustrated cottage. The elves’ clothing (designed by Gregg Barnes) pop with color, like a bag of jelly beans, and their silhouettes dance with whimsy. The New York City backdrops hang like paintings on a page. As Scalamoni said, “As Santa reads us the story out of his pop-up book, we step into the pop-up book.”
The musical, much like the movie it’s based on, is “the story of Buddy, the elf” — a man raised in the North Pole as an oversized elf, who discovers in adulthood

that his biological father lives in New York City. Buddy ventures to Manhattan to find his dad and, eventually, reinvigorate the Christmas spirit of the entire city. While the idea of holiday spirit can seem naïve to some, Buddy’s fortitude in kindness and joy is the driving engine of the story’s endearing nature.
Will Ferrell iconically originated the role of Buddy in the 2003 film, and it would be easy to consider the overgrown elf a ridiculous character. “People think of Will Ferrell as this big, outrageous, larger-than-life character,” Scalamoni said. “Actually, if you watch the movie Elf, it’s one of his more grounded, honest, genuine performances.”
That earnestness is the key to Scalamoni’s staging — which has been touring since 2012. “Every time we do this, I talk to the actor who plays Buddy, and I say, ‘I know it feels like you want to chew scenery here, but that’s not what this is about,’” said the director. “This is about being an adult who was raised by elves with Santa Claus in the North Pole, and then plucked from that situation, placed into another one and how to react to these situations.”
“They have to come from a real place,” Scalamoni said of the actors who play Buddy. “I think that helps ground the show.”
And that doesn’t just go for Buddy. Scalamoni tasks every actor in the cast with finding truth rather than fantasy. “I have this conversation with the elves all the time,” he said. “I say to them, ‘These are just people who happen to work at a toy shop. They are not little pixies. We need to play them as people.’”
Capturing that humanity is what allows for the magic. As Scalamoni said, “It’s about spirit.”
While Buddy drips with spirit, New York City does not. But Scalamoni has also been careful about the portrayal of the people who make up the metropolis. “Manhattan gets a bad reputation for being a little gruff and rough sometimes,” he said. “We paint the people in New York as people who are burdened. I talk to the gentleman who plays Walter [Buddy’s dad], and I always say, ‘You’re not mean. You’re a good guy. You’re just buried under a lot of pressure — family pressure, work pressure.’ I think we all can relate to that.”
That relatability is key to Elf, and book writers Bob Martin and the late Thomas Meehan infuse empathy — as well as a sleighful of joy — into the script, while composer Matthew Sklar and lyricist Chad Begeulin do the same for the score. Like Scalamoni said, “We watch Buddy crack that [burden] open with his spirit, true joy and passion for wanting to live this joyous life that he’s grown up in and share that with others.”
Sharing the spirit of Elf is what has kept Scalamoni with the tour of the musical through 15 different companies over the course of 12 years. “I love telling the story and I love what it says about the season,” Scalamoni said. “We bring the idea of spending time with family and the people that you care most about. That is really what the season is about: taking time to enjoy the season of giving and caring,” he said. “We do the show at the holidays, but you could see it any time.”
“I feel we get to share that with the rest of the country every year when the tour goes out,” he continued. “That really keeps me passionate about it. We have a little gem here, and I love preserving it.”

INSIDE THE REAL MOULIN ROUGE
The Tony Award-winning musical of the same name pays homage to a landmark of Parisian history.
STORY BY Michael Abourizk
While the Tony Award-winning musical Moulin Rouge! The Musical is a work of fiction, it is rooted in a specific time and historic place. Adapted from the 2001 Baz Luhrmann film of the same name, the musical chronicles the interactions of young writer Christian and a cast of characters (some fabricated, some factual) swirling around the real-life Moulin Rouge nightclub in Paris. Moulin Rouge! is set during the turn of the century at the height of La Belle Époque period. This was an era of French history ranging from the end of the Franco-Prussian War in 1871 to the start of World War I in 1914. The time was marked not only by economic prosperity in France, but the flourishing of arts and culture. A certain joie de vivre was felt throughout society. During this time, the Moulin Rouge club was the inimitable hub of Paris’ nightlife entertainment. Founded by Charles Zidler and Joseph Oller, the Moulin Rouge opened on Oct. 6, 1889. Zidler and Oller wisely chose Montmartre in the 18th arrondissement (neighborhood) as its locale. The northern Parisian location was a lower-class

neighborhood, known for its population of artists. Zidler and Oller knew the allure of mingling between bohemians with the middle- and upper-classes had appeal, as La Belle Époque’s sense of mirth allowed social barriers to blur.
The nightclub opened at the Jardin de Paris. The outdoor garden offered food, drink and cabaret entertainment. A giant stucco elephant, purchased by Zidler and Oller at the 1889 Exposition Universelle, watched over the al fresco space. An opium den sat inside the elephant, accessible by a spiral staircase in one of its legs.
Within this outdoor space and an indoor auditorium, the Moulin Rouge offered an ever-changing variety of acts. Regular offerings ranged from operettas and musical revues to circus-oriented performances, such as the famous French flatulist Le Pétomane and the clown duo Foottit and Chocolat. One hallmark of the space was the guarantee of dancing chorines, earning the nightclub the moniker “Le Premier Palais de Femmes” — the first palace of women.
Much of the dancing at the Moulin Rouge featured the can-can, a style performed by a chorus line incorporating high kicks, splits and cartwheels. The origin of the can-can is disputed; while it predates the establishment of the Moulin Rouge, the venue increased its popularity. The choreography became practically synonymous with the club. Sonya Tayeh’s Tony-winning choreography for the musical juxtaposes the can-can with more modern dance.
Beyond the stage, the can-can is a prominent fixture of much of the artwork inspired by the Moulin Rouge. Jules Chéret’s “Bal au Moulin Rouge” painting and Alfred Choubrac’s “Au Joyeux Moulin Rouge” served as advertising for the nightclub and are still recognizable images today. Perhaps most notably, painter Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec was commissioned to create a series of posters for the venue. His works such as “Au Moulin Rouge” and “Moulin Rouge–La Goulue” depict both performers and patrons of the club and immortalize the famous hall.
Toulouse-Lautrec’s Moulin legacy extends beyond his iconic images. He is one of the several characters portrayed in Moulin Rouge! based on a real person. Of them, the character of Toulouse most closely matches his real-life counterpart: He was indeed a bohemian artist seen often at the club and used a cane. The master of ceremonies seen in the musical, Harold Zidler, is inspired by the aforementioned co-founder Charles Zidler. “Roxanne” dancer Nini is based on real Moulin performer Nini Pattes en L’Air (Nini Legs in the Air), who, in real life, was known as a preeminent interpreter of the can-can, teaching the dance to future generations.
Finally, Satine, the star attraction of the Moulin Rouge seen in the musical, is a fictionalized version of Jane Avril. Avril was a noted performer throughout Parisian dance halls, who became a headliner of the Moulin Rouge in the 1890s. Her prominence and nimble dancing are captured in Toulouse-Lautrec’s painting “Jane Avril.”
The Moulin Rouge still stands today. Despite a 1915 fire that destroyed the original structure, the venue was rebuilt. The Moulin Rouge remains a major entertainment destination for visitors to Paris, offering a peek into the arts and culture explosion of La Belle Époque. The musical, which opened on Broadway in 2019 and launched a national tour in 2022, does the same, eight times a week. Moulin Rouge! The Musical is scheduled to play January 14-19, 2025 at the Old National Centre.
