Hello
Further information
November sees the welcome return of Animated Encounters Bristol’s festival of all things animated. This year sees an exciting array of competitive screenings, special events, conferences and panel discussions featuring some of the most important decision makers in the business.
Full programme information available at encounters-festival.org.uk and join the mailing list for regular updates.
Animation production plays a vital role in the creative heart and identity of Bristol. It is therefore a safe argument to make that Bristol benefits from an opportunity to exhibit, discuss and debate not just homegrown talent in the region and UK but a worldwide selection of films and creative ideas that underpin the business of animation.
Festival Office +44 (0) 117 929 9188 info@encounters-festival.org.uk
The re-launch of Animated Encounters has been widely welcomed throughout the animation community both at home and overseas and the expectations are high for the festival to deliver a useful platform to engage with the films and some of the issues facing the industry today. The main purpose of a film festival is to celebrate the films and filmmakers who dedicate so much of their time to this art-form. Animation production, like most filmmaking, is a collaborative affair and the best way to experience animated films is on the big screen in front of an audience. We hope you will join us in showing support and appreciation for the creative and dedicated animators from all over the world by joining in these festivities. This year we also see the return of Brief Encounters, a celebration of today’s leading short film talent (16 – 21 November). Pick up a Brief Encounters leaflet or visit the website for more information. What will your Animated Encounter be? Read on to find out more. Kieran Argo Animation Programme Manager

Competition Screenings
Special Event Highlights
The selected animations are gleaned from hundreds of submissions and provide an excellent opportunity to see some of the best home-grown and international films from fresh to established talent. Each program is an eclectic mix with striking variations in themes and styles. From traditional methods of stop-frame animation to the latest computer-generated works, all offer short, sweet and sometimes sour stories and novel approaches.
Opening Feature Wed 17 Nov, 7.30pm Kicking off in grand style with a UK premiere screening of the animation documentary Waking Sleeping Beauty. The film is no fairy tale, as it chronicles the time in Disney Feature Animation from 1984 to 1994 when a perfect storm of people and circumstances changed the face of animation forever. It is a story of clashing egos, out of control budgets, escalating tensions and one of the most extraordinary creative periods in animation history.
With five prizes up for grabs including International, Best of the South West (sponsored by South West Screen), Best of British (sponsored by Cartoon Network) Emerging Talent (sponsored by 4mations.com) and don’t forget the Animation Online Audience Award (sponsored by Pixillion and powered by Bablegum) available to view and vote on the website.
Tim Minchin’s Desert Island Flicks Thu 18 Nov, 8.30pm This year the festival is very excited to welcome on stage the comedian, actor, composer, songwriter, musical director and celebrated sceptic Tim Minchin, together with director DC Turner to discuss their new animated short film Storm that will see its festival premiere during this event.
The screenings run throughout the four days and culminate in the awards ceremony on Saturday night. Check out the full film details on encounters-festival.org.uk
Other Events Other events include: A screening of the Cartoon D’or nomination (the annual prestigious European prize for outstanding work); an Industry Only (pass holders) screening of the new slate of the 4Mations/UKFC/Channel 4 Animation scheme, and much more. See calendar for dates and times.

Canimation Sat 20 Nov, 9pm Celebrating the crossover art of graffiti and animation, this international programme consists of time-lapse recordings of varied graffiti applications some far more adventurous and challenging than others. It has been rumoured that Banksy’s identity is revealed and confirmed for the first time in some recently discovered and as yet unseen security footage. Tate Movie Project Sat 20 Nov, 1pm & 3.30pm. Part of a series of four lectures on throughout the festival. Preparing for Market Fri 19 Nov, 2.30-4.30pm Developing a triple-A project requires triple-A thinking. Presented by the Children’s Media Conference and supported by UKTI, this is a two-hour crash course in preparing an animation project for market. Successful case-studies and analysis from commissioners and distributors will provide a best-practice guide to key issues, including productive creative development, working with writers, contracts and IP protection, building deals and how to approach Annecy, Cartoon Forum, and other international markets. Animation 4 Life Fri 19 Nov, 9am-5pm, £45 Book through website. Presented by Stop Motion Pro, this one-day event looks at the social and medical therapeutic benefits and applications of animation.
