Awards Across two competition strands; Animated Encounters (all animation), and Brief Encounters (live action and animation), over 180 films from 31 countries of all genres will screen in competition, with filmmakers from around the world battling it out for one of the festival’s top awards. Taking short film out of the cinema and onto the high street, Encounters fashions a boutique, pop-up cinema, celebrating talent from across the city with a series of daily short film screenings. Across the water, the Vintage Mobile Cinema presents a unique slice of theatrical and automotive history, screening archive shorts all weekend. Burning into the night, No.1 Harbourside presents each evening with a mash up of music, film and Bristol beer.

Long Distance Information by Douglas Hart, BRIT 1: Out of Step

Festival of Ideas presents Big Ideas, Big Screen with Francine Stock, presenter of Radio Four’s The Film Programme, discussing her new book In Glorious Technicolour. Directors UK host an interview with Bruce Robinson (Withnail & I, The Rum Diary), and the National Film and Television School present a cinematography masterclass with Brian Tufano (Trainspotting) and Stuart Harris. Desert Island Flicks returns with John Krictalusi, creator of The Ren & Stimpy Show, to discuss his favourite and most influential films, and BAFTA Masterclass presents an intimate insight into the life and workings of a celebrated figure from the British screen.

Performance, Film & Music The Cube Cinema presents The Magical Misery Tour; a journey into the underworld with a horror inspired, live VJ set from People Like Us, guaranteed to elevate you from the swamp. See a script come to life at a dramatic live reading of this year’s European Short Film Pitch commission. On the harbour, the Bird Man of Alkijazz Tony Orrell, and Scissor Sisters Musical Director and Keyboard player John (JJ) Garden, return to Arnolfini for an exclusive performance of a new live accompaniment to experimental short films.
