To produce creative artworks using Tonello innovations.
Continuing the theme of PURPOSE, we explore what purpose means to us and how we can find meaning by discovering our purpose.
Ikigai is a Japanese concept that combines the words “iki” and “gai” which loosely translates to “reason for being”. This philosophy encourages people to find their life’s purpose and live a joyful and fulfilling life.
The Ikigai philosophy of finding meaning in everyday life inspired this diagram (opposite). Writing down the answers to each section aims to give you direction in creating a holistic way of living.
Matt and Sadia responded to some of these ideas through their work.
We invite you to write down your answers and see if meaning can be found through finding purpose.

SAKE artist and graphic designer
Sadia Rafique is a visionary storyteller specialising in fashion projects and creative collaborations. As the co-founder of ENDRIME® and Denim History, she has made a mark as an Art and Creative Director, leading award-winning fashion shoots, films, and brand identity projects. Her expertise spans storytelling in marketing, social media, and creative direction for the denim and fashion industry, working with mills, brands, and fibre producers. Sadia’s background as an apparel graphic designer includes collaborations with global brands, where her hand-painted illustrations elevated leather jackets and premium sneakers, sold at more than 30 stores globally including Tokishirazu and United Arrows in Japan, Ron Herman and Fred Segal in LA, Boutique1 in Dubai, Harvey Nichols, Library Liberty, Matches and Browns in London, UK.
Our first edition of SAKE was such a great experience that I couldn't wait to return to Italy over the summer to explore what we learned about Tonello's exceptional capabilities.
This time, I wanted to explore type and composition, introduce colour to our designs, and work with photographic and manipulated imagery through digital and physical spray techniques. I also played with layout, illustrations, and how this links back to finding meaning through the collaboration of art & innovative technology.
Having been in roles where we design to a strict brief, I have always loved the freedom of creating without constraint, thinking of the art and an idea first, and then seeing ways to apply the results in interesting ways. It opens up the space to play and create new ways of working, giving the artist ownership over what they produce, using Tonello's technology as a paintbrush and garments as the canvas.
It was wonderful to collaborate with Matt this year. We go back more than ten years, and we work well together. I was excited to see what we'd produce for SAKE 2024.

What does “purpose” mean to you?
Purpose is the essence of personal evolution, a journey of growth, transformation, and self-discovery. In Japanese culture, there is a profound term—Ikigai—which encapsulates the idea of purpose as the reason for being, a force that gives life its meaning. Drawing inspiration from this concept, we explored imagery that symbolized growth in its various forms.
Some representations are abstract, evoking a metaphysical perspective, while others are more tangible, such as flourishing flowers and thriving plants. We also examined the human body, seeking ways to harmonize these natural elements with physical forms.
What you see here is the culmination of this creative exploration—a synthesis of body and nature, purpose and growth.

Matt joined us this year as a contributing artist and graphic designer. He is the ex Levi’s Print and Graphics Director and Creative Consultant at Alexander McQueen.
Matt Duckett is an experienced Graphic/Print Designer and Art Director with 19 years of expertise, primarily within the fashion industry. His extensive portfolio also includes work in illustration, animation, and video production. Having lived and worked internationally, he brings a global perspective to his projects. In addition to his creative work, he has shared his knowledge as a lecturer and tutor at leading universities and has had his work published in prominent journals.
MOHSIN SAJID
SA KE co-project manager, collection design and storytelling
Mohsin Sajid is a highly accomplished denim specialist, denim historian and educator. With more than 20 year’s experience working with a number of world-leading international denim brands and mills.
Mohsin has a keen interest in raising the next generation of denim designers reflecting on his role as MA Denim Lecturer at The Royal College of Art, and BA Denim Lecturer at Central St Martins and Ravensbourne University London.
SUSAN ZHENG
AR experience developer for Snapchat and Instagram
Susan will develop a VR experience for the Kingpins Show attendees to share on Snapchat or Instagram, promoting the SA KE project during the event.
Susan Zheng is a 3D Fashion Technical Artist specializing in digital garment creation. She earned her MA in Pattern and Garment Technology from the London College of Fashion, where she researched traditional fashion through 3D technology. At Modern Mirror, she worked in developing for a 3D body scanning system for virtual fitting. Her research focuses on digitizing historical garments and enhancing fashion narratives through gamified experiences, with her paper presented at the 2024 Digital Fashion Innovation Conference.

TONELLO LAUNDRY (R)EVOLUTION
The Laundry (R)Evolution is the Tonello concept that reinvents the laundry of today and tomorrow, making its processes simpler, digital and automated. It is based on the integration of two main technologies that centralize, simplify, and track the finishing cycle of a garment, reducing the waste of water, energy, and time, optimizing resources, and efficiently managing the entire finishing cycle:
• THE Laser, which replaces manual abrasion processes and allows easy development of new projects, transforming a repetitive phase into one of concentrated supervision and creativity. Thanks to Crea and B.O.P. it makes work easier, increases flexibility, and makes the process more accessible.
• All-in-One System, the Tonello washing machine par excellence, a machine for washing or dyeing, that integrates 4 sustainable technologies (EGO, NoStone®, UP, and Core), optimizing resources, space, and production flows.
Finally, the Metro software automatically and transparently measures all consumption to make the process more efficient. Metro issues a real “environmental passport” with reliable information based on real, transparent, automatic, and non-manipulatable data.
In short, the Laundry (R) Evolution makes it possible to process garments by maximizing time and resources, and making the operator’s work more ergonomic and flexible. It makes it possible, for example, to wash a medium tone pair of jeans with only 10-15 liters of water when it would normally require numerous processes in different machines, a lot of manual skill, the use of hazardous chemicals, and a consumption of as much as 150-300 liters of water per garment.
Responsible and “lean”, transparent, safe, flexible, and easy: in a nutshell, it is the simple and sophisticated Laundry (R) Evolution according to Tonello. Here and now.
