Not long ago the U.S. Congress passed the Fast Act. And Fast it is. All passports are now scrutinized by the U.S. State Department to see if you are behind on your income taxes. If you owe $50,000 or more in federal income taxes you will receive a 508C letter denying you a U.S. Passport because of your tax delinquency.

Yes, you read that right, the IRS has now extended their reign of terror to include the denial of international travel to any U.S. Citizen. The problem is this is going too far. What is next, denial of a drivers license? Or what about denial of the right to work?

In fact, the Commissioner of IRS has repeatedly stated that the federal income tax system is a voluntary system.

However, a lot of people find that if they don’t volunteer they end up with huge tax bills or even end up in prison. So how does this whole thing work? How can it be voluntary but if we don’t pay we can get in trouble? The answer to these and many other questions are discovered by our clients.
