WHAT IS WIRE TO WATER TESTING?
Wire to water testing measures the mechanical work of the pump through direct measurement of pump flow (gpm) and pump differential pressure (suction and discharge pressures in feet of head). At the same time as this mechanical measurement is being undertaken, electrical measurements (amps,
volts, power, and power factor) are also being taken. The electrical energy consumed is then compared to the mechanical energy delivered to the fluid to determine the wire to water efficiency of each pump. The information from testing is used to generate a pump operating curve which is then compared
to the factory pump curve. By graphing the test results and comparing the test data to the manufacturer’s published curves, we are provided with a window into how efficiently the pump and motor are operating. The discrepancies between the curves highlight potential problems often before they become catastrophic failures.

Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Wins Award at BCA Annual Summit ENERActive Solutions is pleased to announce that their Energy Audit & RetroCommissioning project at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC)’s Sidney Kimmel Center for Prostate and Urologic Cancers was selected as the winner of the Existing Building Category at the 2014 Commissioning Project Awards. Due to the critical nature of the services provided and patients served at the Kimmel Center, it was vital to reduce maintenance issues and calls to these spaces. As Kimmel Center patients undergoing chemotherapy were extremely VP Saverio Grosso with MSKCC’s Bob Berninger and Lindsey Clark with the BCA’s Commissioning Project Award sensitive to space temperatures, it was critical for the Eneractive Team to identify and implement Energy Conservation Measures (ECMs), which not only reduced energy consumption but significantly enriched patients quality of stay and comfort. Upon completion of the project, a total of seven (7) Capital ECMs were identified and four (4) O&M ECMs were identified for implementation; execution of these ECMs will reduce site electricity consumption by over 50% and steam consumption by 30%, while maintaining a payback period of 0.9 years. Additionally, the implementation of these ECMs will account for a total of $191,250 in annual savings and help offset site energy consumption by approximately 1,291,151 kWh and 1,283 Klbs annually. The Kimmel Center was selected for this award in recognition of the commissioning services implemented for the project, as well as the owner’s commitment to the commissioning process. The Building Commissioning Association (BCA) Northeast Chapter announced the winners at their 8th Annual Commissioning Summit which was held Tuesday, October 14th in Boston, MA.

Q&A Corner
Project Manager Jim Coyle answers one of the industry’s most commonly asked questions:
IS THERE ANY DIFFERENCE BETWEEN
There is not enough hard agreement in the industry on the meaning of “conservation” vs “management.” Depending on where you sit, the two could be essentially identical to you, or could be different, and I would not say either view was necessarily wrong. There are many different roles of the “community” that have interest in these topics: Owners, developers, facility managers, portfolio managers, utilities, government, consultants, manufacturers, etc. Accordingly, the question is not well posed and does not lend itself to a crisp answer, and almost any point of view could be right. What is more important is that if you are doing a study for a client (I have over 200 in the last 10 years) is that you understand the client’s specific position and goals. I will give a quick example, however, to illustrate a distinction. If you install a very large PV system (say 10 M KW-hrs elect
“ENERGY CONSERVATION” “ENERGY MANAGEMENT”?
&
annually), you would have “conserved” quite a lot of consumption that would have come from the grid (though you might not have any site conservation, another issue). If you did it where you paid for the whole thing without any outside subsidies (in reality this would not happen), then you would have paid many times more for the avoided power. In this case, you can take the view that you did not “manage” at all, or at least the management was poor with respect to cost, even though you “conserved.” The distinction with management is that it takes into account the organization’s other resources, particularly monetary. To carry the analogy further, you could “conserve” yourself into bankruptcy (at least in theory) or out of business, which when you think about defeats the purpose of “conservation.”
JIM COYLE, PE, LEED AP, CEM, CEA, EBCP Jim Coyle has over 30 years of experience in both mechanical and electrical systems and has cultivated expertise in various aspects of planning, designing, construction, commissioning, and operation of energy generating & energy consuming mechanical and electrical systems. Specifically, he has dedicated the last 6 years performing energy efficiency and design work - having led over 200 audits, retrocommissioning studies, and energy efficiency studies on a wide variety of facilities including Columbia University Medical Center, the New York Power Authority (NYPA), and ABC/CBS.
