Please keep in mind that children who are currently attending or have attended Kindergarten up to grade 6 are welcome to join in on the fun.

Children younger than this can not participate in this program.

We would be happy to start a Parents and Tots night for parents with children who are under age. If you would like a program where your child can have some fun and play with other children while parents stay and socialize let us know.

Friday, November 12th 2010 Taylor Community Hall 7:00 - 9:00pm Well Bingo got back to a great start! Bingo is hosted once a month at the Community Hall.

Bingo is a free event put on by the Community Services Department with food donations going to the Salvation Army and Fort St john Women‘s Shelter.

Participants must be over 19 years of age or in direct accompaniment of a parent or caregiver if under 19.

Two Bingo cards will be allotted per person with Coffee, Tea, Hot Chocolate, Water and cookies available on a self-serve basis.

Winter Walking Club Do you like to stay active by walking, but dislike the cold outdoor weather during the winter?

The Taylor Winter Walking Club is the answer for you then!

Weekdays from 8am - 1pm!

The Community Services Department has scheduled five hours per day INSIDE the Community Hall for individuals to come and walk: 8am—1pm Weekdays during the winter months (with the possibility of a few cancellation due to community hall booking conflicts).

The Taylor Winter Walking Club concept is fairly simple: The Community Hall opens at 8AM and closes at 1PM Weekdays All members of the public are welcome to drop-in during operating hours, and walk the circumference of the Community Hall as many times as they like.

All walkers must bring a separate pair of indoor walking shoes.

Baby strollers, wheelchairs, walking aids, ect. are welcome, just please bring a cloth to wipe off any dirt/moisture from the wheels/legs prior to walking.

The ‘Taylor Winter Walking Club‘ is an unsupervised program; all Walkers register themselves on a simple ‗sign-in‘ form A ‘tracking sheet‘ will be available for each walker, enabling them to translate the number of hall laps into kilometers.

Neat to think that by winter’s end, you may have walked 20, 30, 50, 100 Kilometers!

From time to time the Community Services Department will provide ‗walking‘ literature, or even schedule an information session with a health professional.

If you would like information on a specific topic let Shelanda know.

SAFETY FIRST! Walking is considered a safe and low risk form of physical activity. However, if walking is a new form of activity for you, gradually increase the distance or your the pace over time. Should you experience any pain or signs of injury be sure to reduce your distance or pace and consult your physician if the injury persists.

Parents, Families, Staff and Children all enjoyed a Healthy Walk to Breakfast from the Taylor Elementary School to the Taylor Community Hall. ―Filling students stomachs with healthy nutritious foods is proven to help the children learn better and comprehend more of what they‘ve learnt‖ says principal Jason Gill.

It was wonderful to see Councilor Betty Ponto along with all of the students and their family members as they crossed the highway with hungry bellies waiting to come inside and enjoy the wonderful breakfast that Phyllis Rouble from Gramas' Lunchbox at the Taylor Ice Arena had prepared them.

Teaching children healthy eating habits at a young age is really important and we cannot wait for next year! Thank you to everyone for supporting us in teaching your children about the importance of a healthy breakfast.

Taylor‘s Christmas Light-Up Taylor Town are you ready to light up our community!!!!!

I hope everyone is getting in the spirit of Christmas, and getting ready to light up our community! Judges will be touring around Taylor Friday, December 3rd at 7:00pm We will be looking for houses decorated in the finest decorations and will announce the winners of the competition Saturday, December 4th at the Arena.

Judges will be looking for LED lights only this year, they will also be looking at your eaves trough, roof, house outline, windows, ledges, trees, objects, effort, design and ‗other‘ as a factor when judging. Judges will also be looking at environmentally friendly methods of decorating you homes and yards.

LED lights convert electricity to light without using heat. Each light should last more than 200,000 hours compared to only 1,000 hours for conventional lights.

A string of LED lights, like the ones used at the District facilities, cost less than 2 cents to run for 30 days when lit for six hours a day.

Conventional lights would cost $3.15 to run for the same length of time.

Remember your household can‘t win twice in a row.

Saturday December 4th is when the fun of December starts!

Peace Community Church will once again host their Annual Christmas Party at the Community Hall from 5:00 - 7:00pm.

Don‘t worry because the fun will not stop then!

After the Churches Annual Christmas Party the Community Services Department will begin their Christmas Light Up from 7pm - 9pm!

Free Skating, Hot Chocolate and family fun will be had by all.

Don‘t worry kids Santa has contacted us and he will be attending again this year! He is very excited to hear your Christmas lists.

Since it is the season of giving we ask that people bring non perishable food items. We will also be doing our Coats for Christmas Program so feel free to bring items for that as well.

Taylor’s Christmas Light-Up Continued This year we are pleased to invite all of those talented people available in our Community to our Annual Community Christmas Light up Party at the Taylor Arena. We are looking for people who would like to book a Table for the Craft Fair part of our Community Light Up. The Craft Fair will take place from 10am - 8pm at the Taylor Arena.

Tables are $10 per table to book, all money will go towards buying Non Perishable Food Items to give back to our local communities.

Taylor‘s Coats for Christmas In the sprit of giving the District of Taylor will be running its 2nd Annual Coats for Christmas campaign.

We are once again looking for donations and helping hands!

Coats for Christmas was started in Taylor last year to help people in need keep warm through the winter season. Due to the overwhelming support last year we are looking forward to continuing it again this year. Lets make it even bigger and better!

Coats for Christmas will take place throughout November and December with clothing being distributed throughout Taylor, Baldonnel, and Fort St John.

The District of Taylor is partnering with the with the Fort St. John Salvation Army and Women's Resource Center to help distribute items such as used coats, mittens, toques, snow pants / boots, sweat pants, sweaters and any other items that individuals may have around the house that can help others stay warm during the winter.

IN THE HEAT WITH THE TAYLOR FIRE DEPARTMENT Well, time sure flies when you are having fun with fire safety! October is always so busy for the Fire Department with Fire Prevention Week and all that happens around it. This year‘s message was ―SMOKE ALARMS: A Sound You Can Live With‖ and we hope everyone did their homework and tested their smoke alarms to ensure they are working. Don‘t forget, if your smoke detector is not working, it‘s time to either replace the batteries or get yourself a new detector!

During Fire Prevention Week, we participated in a number of activities. Sadly, we were unable to make all that noise we were telling you about last month at the Fort St. John‘s Fire Prevention Parade because it was cancelled. However, we did help in the Canadian Tire parking lot with fire extinguisher demonstrations and the set up a kids‘ Hose Relay. In addition, we visited Taylor and Baldonnel Elementary Schools for fire drills and talked to the kids about fire safety. Then on Wednesday night we continued with our Annual Smoke Detector Testing. This year, similar to last year, we visited and tested detectors for as many seniors residents in our community as possible. This year was special to because we had some extra help from Flat Sparky. Flat Sparky went to all the Fire Prevention Week activities and we got pictures of his adventures. If you are thinking, ―Flat Sparky?????,‖ you can go to sparky.org and check out ―Sparky‘s Adventures.‖ Look for Sparky on his adventure in Taylor. A big THANK YOU!! goes out to all the firefighters for helping make Fire Prevention Week such a success! We‘d also like to thank the schools for showing their support. Good luck to the Taylor and Baldonnel students that filled out their entry forms and Escape Plans for the contests, we will be back to let you know the winners this month.

In Taylor we believe in providing as much fire safety information to as many young children as we can. It is always great to have groups call and request Fire Hall Tours. In October, we had two groups of kids from the Sas Natsadly (Little Bear) Preschool Aboriginal Headstart and the Kindergarten class from Taylor come down to the Fire Hall for some fun and learning. Just a question to all you parents out there. Did you get your homework done? Did you test your smoke detector or practice your STOP, DROP & ROLL? If not, it is never too late! Smoke detectors should be tested once a month by pressing the test button on the detector, and the batteries changed once a year (fire prevention week is a good time to do this). Also, remember to practice your home escape plan!

Halloween! Yes, Halloween and fireworks go together for us at the Fire Department. It takes everyone in our department to make the Halloween fireworks show a success! There is a lot of work involved, not to mention, if they are not prepared correctly, they can be dangerous. Firefighters wear full Turn-out gear and are trained in the art of lighting fireworks. The fireworks we set off are a lot different than what the public can purchase at the store. DID YOU KNOW? Within the District of Taylor, you must request and receive permission from the Fire Chief prior to setting off fireworks.

So far the weather has been extremely nice for fall but it won‘t be long before the snow starts to fly. A little ice, a little snow, and whoops! There go a few cars into the ditch! Take your time to and from work, you haven‘t used those winter-driving-skills for a few months. I‘m sure like the majority of us, they are a little rusty!! To counter this, make sure you have good winter tires on your vehicles. Some people seem to think that All-Season tires are good for the cold but that is very untrue. Winter tires are made of a much softer rubber, meaning that they still grip the road and snow at very cold temperatures. All-seasons and summer tires get too hard and don‘t mould to the contours of the road, leaving your life and all the drivers around you to chance. Make sure your rubber has a triangle with a snowflake inside- they‘ve been tested and approved for winter driving!

Well, with the colder temperatures upon us, those of us with wood stoves and chimneys need to remember to do some maintenance before firing things up. It is important to sweep and or clean your wood stoves and chimneys before you start them and on a regular basis. Only burn dry, well seasoned wood to prevent the build up of creosote which is the leading cause of chimney fires. Check out ―Heating Safety‖ for more information.

The District of Taylor is holding an appreciation dinner for the Taylor Volunteer Fire Department and ESS Personnel on November 20th 2010.

Doors Open at 5:30pm Dinner at 6:00pm Awards ceremony to follow.

Anyone who wishes to join us in showing our appreciation to these volunteers can purchase tickets for $20 per person.

Tickets can be purchased at the District Office Monday to Friday 9:00am - 5:00pm.

The deadline for tickets is 5:00pm Friday, November 5th.

We just launched a brand new movement at Shaw called Together is Amazing and I‘m really excited to share it with you. What we‘re trying to do is use the Shaw Network of phone lines, television, Internet and Satellite to bring people together to do amazing things.

It‘s pretty cool because when we get together, we literally have the power to change the world.

The first initiative is called ―Fill the Food Banks‖ and it‘s amazing because every pound of food donated by the community is matched by both shaw and Campbell‘s!

Our goal is to raise 1,000,000 pounds of food for the food banks across Canada.

So if you would help out in any way that would be terrific.

All food collected will be donated to the Salvation Army in our local community.

Dear Taylor Residents: Thursday, November 25th, 2010, there will be a practice muster drill at Spectra Energy‘s (formerly Duke Energy or Westcoast Energy‘s) McMahon Plant in Taylor.

As part of this drill, the siren will be sounded for an extended period of time, up to 15 to 20 minutes. This is the same horn you hear tested briefly every Wednesday at noon.

Buick Arena Grand Opening Buick, BC October 28, 2010 The Buick community will now have access to a NHL size arena. The arena boasts seating for 200 spectators, heated change rooms, a concession and is wheel chair accessible. During the winter months the facility will be used for indoor ice related recreation. From April to August the facility may be used for other indoor sports and community events. The facility is located next to Buick Creek School on Buick Creek Road.

The community voted yes to a new arena through referendum in 2006. The Buick Creek Community Club partnered with the Peace River Regional District and School District 60 to bring this project to fruition. “It has been a pleasure to work with the community of Buick and to see the excitement grow as the plans came together”, said Karen Goodings, Director of Area “B” of the Peace River Regional District. “This facility will provide many years of enjoyment and it is great to see the enthusiasm of the local volunteers.”

On October 28, at 3pm the official grand opening ceremonies took place. With speakers, presentations and a puck drop will be followed by a BBQ sponsored by Canadian Crude Separators.

“Every community has the regular volunteers who get things done in the community, we are no different, but this project has brought out a lot more volunteers and support than I thought possible,” John Bueckert Chair of the Buick Creek Community Club Arena Committee said proudly “From start to finish community members have helped with the planning, the overseeing of the project and some members even learned how to make the ice!”

The $5.2 million for this project was provided by the Peace River Regional District, Ministry of Community and Rural Development- Towns for Tomorrow Program, and Western Economic Diversification- Recreational Infrastructure Canada Program. School District 60 contributed the land that the arena has been built on.

Members of the community are invited to join the Taylor Public Library Board. Library operations are managed by a five member Board of Trustees, who are independent of the District of Taylor.

The Library Act requires that 2 Trustee positions be open each year, with Trustees appointed for two year terms. Your help is needed to continue providing this valuable service! Feel free to talk with any of our current Trustees or our Librarian for more information.

Tips on Saving Energy in Your Home Fireplaces A ceiling fan near a gas fireplace will push valuable hot air down into the whole living area.

Air leaks are common at the joint between the chimney and the wall. To seal them, remove the trim (if necessary) and apply heat-resistant caulking.

A gas fireplace can usually be inserted into an existing wood fireplace. It also can be installed as a completely new hearth.

Traditional wood fireplaces draw valuable heat out of the house, while new gas fireplaces with sealed units maximize heat use.

An efficient gas fireplace may lower energy consumption if installed where its heat can reach many parts of the house.

Accessories such as tightly fitted glass doors and outdoor air intakes help improve fireplace efficiency.

A carbon monoxide detector should be installed near all fuel-combustion appliances. If your gas fireplace has a continuously burning pilot light, it should be turned off during the summer or when you are away for a long time.

Thermostats Lowering the thermostat setting at bedtime and before leaving the house reduces your energy bills without affecting your comfort.

By installing a programmable thermostat, you can save 2 percent on your heating bill for every 1°C (2°F) you lower the thermostat.

Look for a thermostat with the ENERGY STAR symbol on it.

TAYLOR COUNCIL MEETINGS Taylor Council Meetings schedule is as follows: Council Meetings Committee Meetings November 2, 2010 November 16, 2010 December 7, 2010 December 21, 2010 The deadline for agenda items (including notice of delegations) is the preceding Thursday at 12:00 noon.

Both Committee and Council meetings are open to the public and the media. Matters related to Section 90 of the Community Charter (copies are available) are dealt with in-Camera (or at private closed meetings). These are loosely described as legal issues, land and labour/personnel issues.

At both Council and Committee Meetings there is a gallery/media section where members of the public can informally ask questions of Council – and your interest is always welcome!

Committee Meetings are non-decision making meetings where staff reports and correspondence requiring action are received, discussed and a recommendation formulated for the Council Meeting. The Council Meeting is where the recommendations are reviewed and formal decisions made.

FIREWORKS The following information is contained in the District of Taylor Fire and Life Safety Bylaw No. 467, 1993.

Special Permit

(a) The Fire Chief may issue a Special Permit to discharge ―Low and High Hazard‖ fireworks as defined in the ―Fireworks Manual‖ to an individual or organization for a specific event or occasion. (b) No person shall discharge fireworks in the District of Taylor without a permit.

Anyone setting off fireworks in the District of Taylor without a permit is committing an offence and shall be liable, on conviction, to a penalty not exceeding Two Thousand Dollars ($2,000.00) for each offence.

If you have any questions or wish to obtain a special permit for setting off fireworks, please feel free to call the District Office Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm at 789-3392.
