When we set out to write this Top 100, the energy crisis was just a murmur. Now, winter is closing in for the Northern Hemisphere and families will face difficult challenges in the months ahead.

Yet change is an opportunity, and business leaders working across the worldwide energy sector have tough choices to make in regards to navigating geopolitical crises and increasing their sustainability credentials, while supporting customers and motivating staff.

As a Key Technical Expert at Engie, she was seconded to the World Energy Council, leading an international programme on blockchain which resulted in a widely-referenced report on its feasibility and use cases in the energy sector.

Three years ago, Irene co-founded Amp X, rapidly assembling a highly talented, multi-disciplinary team.

“We created Amp X to deliver a disruptive grid-edge digital platform, using a whole-system approach and our proprietary data analytics to deliver flexibility from multiple sources, enabling innovative business models for different stakeholders – from network operators, to retailers, all the way to consumers”, Irene says.

Following successful initial deployments of its technology, Irene is pushing Amp X further towards the development of a fully transactive grid.

02Patrick Pouyanné Chairman & Chief Executive Officer TotalEnergies

Patrick Pouyanné is the Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer at TotalEnergies, an energy company that works with oil and biofuels, natural gas and green gases, renewables and electricity globally.

Pouyanné is dedicated to providing affordable, clean, reliable and accessible energy, and over the course of his career he has brought sustainable development to all dimensions of the business.

Prior to joining TotalEnergies, Pouyanné studied engineering at École Polytechnique and went on to work as an engineer for the French Corps des Mines. He then worked across the French Industry Ministry: from 1993 he was Environment and Industry Technical Advisor to the Prime Minister. From 1995 Pouyanné was the Chief of Staff to the Information Technology and Space Minister.

In January 1997, Pouyanné joined TotalEnergies and worked through a variety of positions, before reaching the roles of Chief Executive Officer and President of the Executive Committee in 2014. The following year, he was

elected as Member of the Board of Directors of TotalEnergies. In December 2015, the board of directors at TotalEnergues made Patrick Pouyanné the Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of Total.

Pouyanne says: "I have been working hard to reduce the impact of TotalEnergies' activities. It was one of the first in the energy industry to publish quantified improvement objectives and from 2008, internal carbon prices to its projects. Most crucially, TotalEnergies started investing in renewable energy in 2011."

He feels that COP21 was definitely a ‘watershed’ moment and that regardless of the current global instability, 195 now stand together in support of this climate agreement.

Pouyanné believes that the energy sector is responsible for encouraging sustainable investment across the private sector, in order to keep global warming under 2°C.

01Ben van Beurden Chief Executive Officer Shell

Under the leadership of van Beurden, Shell is supplying more energy for the future with natural gas investments across the North Sea and continues to reduce its carbon emissions while making significant investments in lowcarbon energy.

At home in the Netherlands, Shell is building the biggest green hydrogen plant in Europe and it is expanding its electric vehicle charging network.

Born in 1958 in the Netherlands, van Beurden was appointed as the CEO of the oil industry titan, Shell, on 1st January 2014. Prior to this, he has had a vibrant career across the energy sector - and the world.

Van Beurden studied chemical engineering at Delft University of Technology and after completing his studies in 1983, he was desperate to travel the world and started working with Shell in Sudan. Here, van Beurden learned lessons in resilience and how the presence of energy lifted people out of poverty - a lifeline he became determined to spread.

He later served as Vice President Manufacturing

Excellence and later as Executive Vice President Chemicals from 2006 to 2012. He also served on the boards of energy industry associations, including the International Council of Chemicals Associations and the European Chemical Industry Council.

From January to September 2013, he worked as the Downstream Director. In April 2021, van Beurden joined the Supervisory Board of Daimler AG, but in November of that year, Shell announced a change to its structure, which led him to move to the UK to keep up with the energy demands.

Outside of Shell, van Beurden has three daughters and one son. He describes his wife Stacey as his closest confidante with a ‘strategic mind and Aussie-readiness’.

Shell recently announced that van Beurden is preparing to step down from his role, and work is underway to find his successor.

The long-term CEO will get to spend more time with his family and travel the world.
