is
CARBON NEUTRAL Thanks to:
What is Carbon Neutrality? Carbon neutrality means that the carbon footprint of a company, product, service or event has been calculated on the basis of internationally recognised standards and fully offset by supporting international carbon offset projects.
ClimatePartner's label "carbon neutral" certifies that unavoidable greenhouse gas emissions have been offset. For the sake of legibility, all emissions are referred to as CO2 emissions and measured in tonnes of CO2. By this, we mean CO2 equivalents, i. e. all relevant greenhouse gases. Offsetting CO2 emissions is an important step in effective climate action, alongside avoidance and reduction. ClimatePartner recommends companies establish and act on CO2 avoidance and reduction plans as a continuous process, and supports them in corresponding strategies. For example, by supporting in defining science based reduction targets, or switching to renewable energy.

Bamboo for deforestation-free products Afforestation, Rio Kama, Nicaragua Our project in eastern Nicaragua has planted more than 1 million plants of a native species of giant clumping bamboo, covering 2,361 hectares while protecting an additional 1,000 hectares of old forest as a conservation zone. It has transformed a degraded landscape into a flourishing and biodiverse ecosystem. Bamboo is one of the most efficient biological tools for fighting climate change. The project contributes to mitigation by preventing deforestation and capturing CO2 as well as to adaptation by reducing temperatures, creating micro-climates, supporting a lowcarbon economy and creating livelihoods for vulnerable communities. In contrast to cutting trees, harvesting giant clumping bamboo does not kill the plant. Once fully mature, selective poles are harvested from each bamboo clump annually, leaving enough time for other poles to regenerate. Thus the carbon stored within the bamboo becomes a permanent sink, with the bamboo clumps having a lifetime of 80 years. The bamboo fibre from the plantations forms the base for a broad range of substainable, deforestation-free products like fibers or building materials. Sustainability LIVE

How does afforestation help fight global warming? Forests are not only among the planet's most important carbon reservoirs. They also are home to an enormous diversity of species and are the livelihood for all people. However, global forest areas have declined sharply in recent decades due to increasing settlement, agricultural use, illegal logging and mining.
The afforestation of new or reforestation of degraded areas is an important contribution to increasing the biosphere's carbon storage capacity. Afforestation takes place in different ways. Sustainable forestry is able to absorb large quantities of carbon due to the use of fast-growing species. Other projects aim at providing shade and soil improvement in agroforestry. The storage capacity of afforestation areas depends on the type of tree and the geographical location. New forests create habitats for animal and plant species and opportunities for local people. 10

Alongside The Economist’s editorial coverage of the climate issue and the impact it delivers through initiatives with clients and partners, the company is committed to holistically managing and reducing its own carbon footprint. Planetly by OneTrust calculated The Economist Group’s global carbon footprint for the reporting year 2020/21 in accordance with the international reporting standards of the Greenhouse Gas Protocol. The calculation accounts for all emissions (Scopes 1-3), including core business activities (e.g. buildings, employees) to the print production of The Economist, logistics and travel. THE ECONOMIST GROUP TAKES ACTION TO REDUCE EMISSIONS GLOBALLY The Group’s ambition is to reduce its emissions by at least 25% by 2025, using

LEADING THE TRANSFORMATION TO REGENERATIVE BUSINESS MODELS HOW DOES SAP CONTRIBUTE TO A REGENERATIVE FUTURE?
Over 90% of biodiversity loss and half of total global emissions comes from the way we use materials today. Shifting to a circular economy reduces our impact on the planet and supports sustainable practices. A circular economy has three key principles –eliminating waste, keeping products and materials in use, and regenerating natural systems. For 50 years, companies have trusted SAP to manage their most valuable resources. We have a responsibility to help businesses be sustainable and regenerative, using our insights to provide full cycle transparency across supply chains. Last year we launched SAP Responsible Design and Production, which accelerates global action through tailored intelligence that helps eliminate waste and design for circularity. Sustainability is a top issue for our customers and an opportunity for SAP to drive transformative change after committing 16
February 2022
itself to net-zero carbon emissions across operations by 2030.
WHAT SAP SUSTAINABLE SOLUTIONS ARE AVAILABLE TO HELP CUSTOMERS?
Our responsibility is to achieve zero waste, zero emissions, and zero inequality. SAP's objective is to create positive economic, environmental, and social impact within planetary boundaries with special focus on climate action, circular economy, social responsibility, and holistic steering and reporting. SAP Cloud for Sustainable Enterprises, alongside our industry and supporting solutions help customers embed operational, experiential, and financial data and insights that drive sustainability at scale, e.g. customers can plan supply chains to reduce emissions, ethically source materials, and manufacture with minimal environmental impact. We continue to innovate in response to market dynamics, such as the introduction

of Plastic Taxes in the UK. There are 400 packaging schemes in place, presenting huge complexity for Consumer Product organisations. SAP Responsible Design and Production provides a global view of material taxes and Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) schemes, alongside insights into downstream impacts of material choice. This enables smart management of packaging obligations and sustainability performance.
HOW DOES SAP ENSURE ZERO WASTE, ACTION AND TRANSPARENCY?
If we can provide insight on materials while they are built into products and as they become waste, we can combine that with a product's CO2 journey. We look at this holistically. The broader sustainability agenda is very high priority -
How do we turn this into something that's actionable? Products and materials account for 45-50% of CO2 emissions. Through our systems, we can provide transparency on global material flows and we have the unique capacity to provide that to businesses and the broader ecosystem.

HOW GREEN IS YOUR SUPPLY CHAIN? Tackling “hidden” supply chain emissions is central to achieving green targets in the face of a climate emergency
F
or many companies worldwide, their carbon footprint is like an iceberg. They think a lot is on the surface and can be calibrated, but in reality there’s much more lurking below unmeasured. Why? Because carbon emissions don’t just stop at the factory gates, they leak out like a fog across all suppliers. So if we’re to tackle the climate crisis, we need to start greening global supply chains.
“The main issue for any company is that their total emissions are on average five times greater than their operational output, but are outside their direct control. The only way to reduce supply chain emissions and stick to a 1.5C future is to engage suppliers and reduce emissions at source,” says Sonya Bhonsle, global director of supply chains at CDP, the Carbon Disclosure Project.

KINAXIS
Supply Chain Efficiency with Schneider Electric
The challenges of decarbonising are as complex and intricate as supply chains themselves. Many companies are starting from ground zero, others source their suppliers based on value for money, which can mean working with less emission-friendly partners. “It doesn’t help that creating a baseline for supply chain emissions requires substantial time and effort given sustainability data is often incomplete,” explains Hugh Jones, managing director, advisory, at the Carbon Trust. “Companies also have carrying levels of relationship with suppliers. Depending on contract sizes, sometimes the level of influence a company has may be very low.” This hasn’t stopped corporations taking action. In 2008, 2,300 or so suppliers were asked to disclose their emissions by 19 supply chain members who had signed up to CDP; 634 responded to their customers. The latest data for 2019 shows more than 13,000 requests went out from 125 corporations and almost 7,000 companies replied, detailing their
carbon output. Times are changing. “Every year suppliers disclose to their customers data on their emissions reductions through CDP’s system. In 2018 suppliers reported an annual saving greater than 1 percent of all global emissions. We’ve seen amazing progress, but there is still a long way to go,” says Ms Bhonsle, whose organization works with the likes of Walmart, P&G, Tesco and Cadbury Schweppes.

State-of-the-art Technology Leads Ark's Sustainable Mission
In 2010, Ark signed an agreement with BladeRoom, a provider of modular free cooling technology and adopted this as the preferred cooling technology – According to Squire’s this approach was favoured because it is one of the most energy-efficient cooling processes in the industry. Although it has complex controls, it has the smallest number of moving parts and uses outside air and evaporative cooling to minimise the use of mechanical cooling systems to less than 2% of an average year. Looking towards the future, there’s not a lot of low hanging fruit to make improvements, Squires says. This is due to the fact that sustainability has been at the forefront of Ark since its inception. “In addition to energy efficient cooling systems and strict air management, we already buy 100% renewable energy and have done so since 2017. We already use rainwater harvesting to reduce our demand on public water supplies. We already have
landscape management plans on our campus’ aiming to improve biodiversity, so I think our real focus over the next twelve to eighteen months is going to be focusing on carbon usage and carbon impacts,” Squires said, adding that it will be a learning journey for Ark’s staff, customers, and supply chain as they support Ark on its sustainability mission.

CENTRALISING SUSTAINABILITY REPORTING FOR A MULTI-NATIONAL SOFTWARE COMPANY
S
age was one of the early leaders to venture into sustainability reporting in 2006. This leadership involved an ambitious plan to measure, report and reduce the Sage corporate carbon footprint. Given the size and complexity of Sage’s operations, Sage adopted an online carbon and sustainability reporting software solution to accomplish this goal. In 2013, Sage decided that a more sophisticated solution which allowed for a wider scope of coverage and capabilities was required for Sage’s future reporting requirements. Following a competitive procurement process of the leading carbon, energy and sustainability software solutions on the market, Sage ultimately selected Diligent ESG. Diligent ESG helped Sage create a robust reporting process to meet complex and evolving sustainability-related regulations. The process involved migrating over 1,200,000 data points and setting up 32

targets for site specific, divisional and group level entities. Centralized sustainability and energy reporting enabled Sage to realise increased efficiencies across operations and Diligent ESG’s powerful analytics provided the organisation with never-before insights to accelerate progress towards their sustainability goals.
BACKGROUND
On October 1st, 2013, the UK implemented a new mandatory carbon reporting legislation directly impacting Sage’s operations. To fulfil the new UK CRC reporting requirements and to, moreover, achieve its own ambitious carbon reductions, Sage found it necessary to acquire a software solution to support these initiatives. Sage’s project goals were to meet the reporting needs and generate analytics to aid costs and emissions reductions.
DILIGENT
Diligent: Our Brand Story
A CENTRALISED SUSTAINABILITY REPORTING PLATFORM
Sage selected Diligent ESG from the pool of solutions the team evaluated because it would not only allow them to centralise all carbon, energy and sustainability data onto one platform but also had an efficient process for migrating over five years of historical data. They provided the Diligent ESG data team with historical data in multiple excel spreadsheet formats, from standalone spreadsheets, exports from the previous sustainability system, exports from other energy and travel systems. Over 1,200,000 data points in all were cleaned and loaded within three days, including a complete accuracy audit. The automated process ensured no room for human error, guaranteeing the highest quality results. Although the data quality Sage had collected over the years was high, some inconsistencies were identified during
the audit and migration process, which were quickly corrected providing a higher degree of accuracy; another benefit to using a purpose-built solution for environmental data. The software immediately produced a league table of all Sage buildings ranked in order of performance and normalised against key performance metrics such as kwh per square meter and per employee initially but also per CO2e.

ESG, diversity, and inclusion. Our global supply chain platform, Avetta One, gives users the power to transform their supply sustainability goals into actual change. With our solution, organizations can easily see which suppliers align with their ESG requirements, and which ones don’t. Then, they can guide eligible suppliers through unique registration and evaluation processes, all based on their maturity levels. They can even analyze suppliers using our ESG Index Score, which benchmarks their performance against a code of contact and rigorous standards. The result? It’s easier than ever to discover suppliers that are both sustainable and diverse, thanks to the deep level of transparency built into our approach. Not only does this lower your overall supply chain risk and help ensure regulatory compliance, but it can also put money back in your pocket. Our research shows that
with the right supply chain partners and ESG criteria in place, companies can reduce overall operating costs by up to 10%. We’ll be sharing more about Avetta One at the Sustainability Live 2022 conference.
