MOST PROMISING ENERGY STARTUPS IN EUROPE In this leaflet you can find a short introduction of the most promising energy startups in Europe listed by Vaasa Entrepreneurship Society. The team behind the listing gathered information from more than 150 startups in Europe and made the evaluation. Startups were ranked based on team, financial information and market position just to mention a few evaluation criteria. The result of this process is this leaflet where the companies are summed up in alphabetical order. We felt that putting the top 30 companies on a specific order would have been inappropriate. The chosen companies represent various fields of businesses - smart housing, power generation and transportation. This allows a large amount of energy to be harvested using a small inexpensive device. The inherent load shedding properties significantly reduce storm loads, providing good survivability. Tests have confirmed a significant improvement in the amount of energy per ton and energy per force compared to other known methods of harvesting wave energy. Wave Energy Converter is taken through the next step of structured verification, dry testing during 2016, followed by ocean testing 2017. Our aim is to establish a new class of highly effective wave power for utilityscale energy generation, offering a cost of energy that can compete with established energy resources.

Ecoisme Ecoisme is a home energy monitoring solution. It is capable of recognizing individual devices in households, based on their signature within the electrical grid. It allows people to track any device’s energy usage and receive personalized tips to reduce consumption. Egoism uses proprietary self-learning technology allowing device detection, based on machine learning algorithms using data about power consumption and “noise spectrum” in the home electrical network. Ecoisme does a bit similar to what Shazam does scanning music.

Manual thermostats are changed to wireless electronic thermostats which are connected to the Internet via a router. After installation, the service works automatically. Building, part of the building, or individual room is monitored and controlled remotely. The solution reduces unnecessary on-site visits, creates alarms and reports help to plan preventive repairs and renovations.
Imagine a bowl with 3 liters of fresh water. Now keep adding 1.5 new liters every minute to keep it nice and warm. It will overflow and refresh itself. Like this, the water touches you 7 times on average. And that’s how it basically works. Hamwells is the world’s first e-shower. It uses only 1,5l of water per minute which means that it saves up to 90% water and 80% energy compared to a classic shower. The technology is based on a revolutionary production process combining industrial packaging foil production with the possibility of micro and nanostructuring the surface of the foil, allowing advanced optics to be produced at low cost. The main focus is Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) in both medium scale automated installations (50 kW units) and smaller, independent and handheld systems for the developing part of the world. Heliac has 5 employees with a background combining optics, polymer processing, nanotechnology and construction. Heliac is a member of the Global Alliance Clean Cookers backed by the United Nations.
IceSolution is a result of several years with research & development work on solutions for icing problems on wind turbines. The development on the area moved from passive anticing to active deicing technology by the development of IceSolutions mother company Return AS in 2011. The development led to a microwave heatable coating that could be utilized in a unique and very energy efficient deicing technology. This resulted in the need for development of microwave technology systems and deicing solutions which today is IceSoltuions occupation. Technology use de-icing with “external de-ice solution�. The coating of the blade generates heat when radiated by microwaves from transistor micro wave unit, and consequently ice falls off the blade surface.

Norsepower The Norsepower Rotor Sail Solution is a modernized version of the Flettner rotor – a spinning cylinder that uses the Magnus effect to harness wind power to propel a ship. When the wind conditions are favourable, Norsepower Rotor Sails allow the main engines to be throttled back, saving fuel and reducing emissions while providing the power needed to maintain speed and voyage time. Rotor sails can be used with new vessels or they can be retrofitted easily to existing ships. Based on the successful sea trials, the technology has potential for permanent fuel savings of up to 30%.
