TPC Limited and the Andhra Pradesh power utilities Andhra Prad es h E a ster n Power Distribution Company Limited (A P E P D C L) a n d A n d h ra Prad e s h Southern Power Distribution Company Limited (APSPDCL) signed a power p u rc ha se ag reem ent (P PA ) f o r procurement of power to be generated from the 250 MW solar power plant, the first phase of the 1,000 mw ultra solar power project being set up by NTPC in Anatapur District in Andhra Pradesh. The PPA was signed in the presence of Shri I. J Kapoor, Director (Commercial), NTPC, Shri Ajay Jain, Secretary, Energy, Govt. of AP, Shri Vijayanand, CMD, APTRANSCO, Shri R.Venkateswaran, RED(South). The tariff on levellised basis for energy supplied from this solar plant has been fixed

at Rs 6.16 per unit for a period twenty five years. The power generation cost may further come down with regard to the remaining 750 mw capacity as that portion of the project would be undertaken through global bidding process unlike in the first phase where only the domestic venders were involved, according to I J Kapoor, Director(Commercial) of NTPC. Shri I J. Kapoor informed that the EPC contract for Phase-I 250MWp (5 x 50 MWp indigenous modules ) will be awarded shortly. The land required for the first phase project was already made available to the company by the state government. It is expected to come on stream in 18 months. The Company plans to install 3000 MW of solar PV capacity during the financial year as compared to the existing installed capacity of 110 mw under solar sector, Mr Kapoor said.
In September last year NTPC had signed an MoU w ith A P gover nment for the development of 1,000 mw solar project, which was dubbed as the world's largest solar power project at a single location by a single developer, in the state. A total of 5,400 acres of land has been identified for the project, most of which has already been acquired, according to the government officials. NTPC is India's largest power utility with an installed capacity of 44,598 MW. It is having its presence in thermal (coal & gas) solar and hydro power. NTPC has already installed 110 MW solar based capacity . NTPC is committed to set up 10,000 MW of solar power capacity. By 2032 NTPC plans to be a 1,28,000 MW Company and targets to have 28% of its installed capacity from non-fossil sources.

Solving the Workforce Knowledge and Skills gap for Hydropower: Voith Hydro’s Education and Training
T
he global hydropower industry is facing the challenge of workforce transition and the demand for a skilled workforce for mission-critical work. The need to provide basic information and training about the various aspects of hydropower technology to professionals is growing. Some of the key staffing challenges and issues of the hydropower industry are: • Decreasing knowledge and skills of employees due to retirement. • Lack of formal hydropower education in engineering and technical schools. • New hires that lack experience and know how. • Staf f shor tages of ten due to the remoteness of hydropower work. • Increasing demands to extend the operating life of plant equipment. • Pressure to ensure energy generation is eco-friendly, reliable and safe. In response to this development Voith Hydro, as a part of their HyServiceTM solutions, developed a performance based p ro f e s s i o n a l d e v e l o p m e n t t r a i n i n g curriculum of courses. Target audience: Eng i n eer s an d tec h n i c ians w i s h i ng introductor y or in-depth insights of hydropower plant technology works, principles of equipment design, manufacturing, operation and maintenance. Goal: Enhance the experience of students to be effective on-the-job.

Turbines: Effective Solutions for Tu r b i n e M o d e r n i z a t i o n a n d R ehabi litation including Field Machining. 5. Mechanical Balance-of-Plant System Design Fundamentals. 6. Hydraulic Governor Maintenance. 7. Shaft Line Alignment for Hydropower equipment. (in development) 8. H o w A u t o m a t i o n I m p r o v e s Hydropower Plant Operation and Maintenance Reliability and Efficiency. 9. Stator Winding Design, Manufacturing, Installation and Testing for Rotating Equipment.
The four in depth-courses of 40 hours (one week duration) are: 1. Hydropower Plants: Design principles, operation and maintenance. 2. Hydraulic Turbines: Design concepts, operation and application. 3. Hydraulic Generators: Design concepts, operation and application. 4. Speed and Voltage Regulation Systems: Theory and practice. Voith Hydro’s Customer Education and Training team includes Voith Subject Matter Experts, led by an Instructional Designer, and adheres to international industry and instructional design methodology for performance based training, the “Systematic Approach to Training (SAT)” for course analysis, design, development, delivery, implementation and evaluation. Wärtsilä Delivers Two Power Plants for Distributed Generation in Oman
W
ärtsilä has received orders to supply t wo Smar t Power Generation power plants for R u r a l A r e a s E l e c t r i c i t y Co m p a ny (RAECO) in Oman. The power plants, with a combined capacity of 104 MW, will supply electricit y to r ural areas in Southeastern Oman, outside the national grid. The power stations will operate in extreme conditions of up to 52 Celsius degrees. The larger of the two power plants will be located on the island of Masirah on Oman’s Eastern coast. The Masirah plant will

consist of seven Wärtsilä 32 engines, having a combined output of 56 MW. The other power plant, to be located in Saih Al Khairat, will have six Wärtsilä 32 engines with a total output of 48 MW. Both units will be operated using light fuel oil and are scheduled to be operational in 2016. “These projects support our strategy of providing reliable distributed capacity with Smart Power Generation technology. They also illustrate our performance in hot and dry conditions,” said Lars-Åke Kjell, Regional Director of Wärtsilä Power Plants. Wärtsilä’s internal combustion engines
maintain high efficiency in extreme temperatures, and their water consumption is negligible. Wärtsilä recently announced a 120 MW distributed power generation project in the Musandam governorate of Northern Oman. The Masirah contract was included in Wärtsilä’s order intake in Q4 2014, whereas Saif al Khairat was booked in Q3 2014. California Tribe Installs First Renewable Hybrid Microgrid

h e B ear R i ver Ban d o f t h e Rohner ville Rancheria is installing the first California Tribal Renewable Microgrid System (TRMS) this summer in Loleta, California. The Bear River Band's new energy system is the only system of its kind combining wind energy, solar energy, and advanced energy storage. “Bear River Band of the Rohnerville Rancheria has a long-term investment in sustainability. JLM Energy's solution is really unique in that it brings solar, wind and energy storage together. We can optimize all our efforts for energy self-reliance. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first renewable hybrid microgrid installed by a California Tribe. Bear River is thinking global and acting local by choosing JLM Energy, a California firm, and using green energy.”— Edwin Smith, Tribal Council Member and Director of Environment and Natural Resources Working with JLM Energy, the Tish Non Community Center on the Bear River Rancheria, will install an advanced energy

storage system, complemented by onsite renewable energy generation. JLM's Gridz system will provide a 30kW microgrid. The system w ill seamlessly suppor t the building's operations during a power outage. In addition, the system actively works to reduce demand charges. The Gridz microgrid solution is supported by a 100kW photovoltaic solar system and twenty of JLM's Zefr wind turbines, providing an integrated approach to sustainable energy. Gridz will enable the Tish Non Tribe to reduce the community center's energy use by shaving peak demand charges. ccra Ghana - Azuri Technologies announced at the Solar & Off-Grid Renewables West Africa Event its partnership with energy company Oasis African Resources to bring affordable, pay-asyou-go solar power to 100,000 off-grid homes in Ghana in the next 2 years. The project is supported by the Ministry of Power, and aligns with the Government's current efforts to bring reliable, renewable power to Ghana at scale. The deployment plan will focus on cocoa farming regions, and be distributed in association with agricultural co-operatives and women-based organisations. The largescale roll-out builds on previous pilot deployments in Ghana, which have proven the success of this solution for rural Ghanaians over the last 18 months. While the energy crisis in Ghana has been intensifying, discussion has mainly focused on the business and urban residential populations, who are now experiencing rolling blackouts of 24 hours or more. However, these recent debates obscure the pre-existing challenges for those Ghanaians, predominantly in rural regions, living permanently off the grid. Data available indicates that about 80% of Ghana's population have access to the grid; however, there are about 5 million people in rural Ghana, most of whom are not likely to be connected in the foreseeable future.

Younicos and Leclanché Partner On Graciosa Project
S
wiss battery manufacturer Leclanché is to play a key role in the gamechanging renewable energy project currently being developed in Graciosa by Younicos, a German-American specialist in renewable energy integration. Leclanché will provide the complete Battery Energy Storage Solution (BESS), using its industry-leading lithium-ion batteries, which will be combined with Younicos Energy Management software. Additionally, an affiliate of Recharge ApS, one of Leclanché’s largest shareholders, will prov ide €3.5M in conver tible debt financing to the project’s operating company Graciolica, a wholly-owned s u b s i d i a r y o f Yo u n i c o s . B o t h announcements are milestones that will help accelerate implementation of the project in the coming weeks and will ensure substantial progress during the course of 2015. The world’s f irst megawatt- scale renewable energy plus storage system, currently being built on the island of 18
Graciosa in the Azores (Portugal), will set new standards for islands worldwide. Furthermore, by stabilizing the grid without the rotating mass of a conventional thermal engine, the system will enable the grid to be fully powered by wind and solar energy. The centerpiece of the system is a fully automated, intelligently managed 2.8 megawatt battery park integrated into the intelligent energy management system developed by Younicos. In addition, the system will incorporate wind (4.5 MW) and solar (1 MW) power resources, and intelligent inverters. The renewable energypowered grid will boost the island’s annual share of renewable energies, from a previous limit of 15 percent to up to 65 percent and thus allow the island to reduce its dependence on fuel imports. MHPSE and CRI Offer Power-to-Methanol Solutions to Increase Flexibility and Sustainability of Power and Process Industry Reykjavik Iceland and Duisburg Germany Carbon Recycling International (CRI), a pioneer in power-to-methanol technology, and Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems Europe (MHPSE), a market and technology leader in the design and construction of thermal power plants, today announced a strategic alliance to deliver power-tomethanol solutions to increase operation efficiency of coal power and chemical plants. Methanol is in high demand as a basic chemical and fuel for transport. Power-tomethanol is a viable technology for large-scale storage of wind and solar power. The companies will market and deliver CRI's power-to-methanol technology, (Emissions to Liquid -ETL) and MHPSE's expertise in the integration of thermal power systems and environmental engineering equipment to enable power plants to operate at economic capacity levels, even when large variations in d eman d an d su p pl y are i m p o sed by intermittent electricity from renewable sources on the grid. The companies will also provide energy upgrade solutions to chemical manufacturers for hydrogen recovery and carbon dioxide capture from flue gas to produce low carbon intensity methanol. CRI is the first company to demonstrate industrial solutions in power-to-methanol production, by capturing carbon dioxide (CO2) from power plant flue gas, by developing large-scale conversion of renewable energy to hydrogen, and by reacting

hydrogen and carbon dioxide to produce methanol . CR I 's power-to -methanol production plant in Iceland, which has been operating since 2012, produces ultra-low carbon intensity methanol that is used for biodiesel manufacturing and gasoline blending. The plant has recently been expanded to 4000-t/year production capacity. A joint demonstration of load-following operation of power-to-methanol technology with a power plant will be demonstrated in the ongoing EU research project MefCO2 [Grant Agreement No. 637016] at the power plant in Lünen, Germany. Full commissioning and operation at Lünen is scheduled in 2017. Meanwhile, in even shorter term, other installations in industry can be realized economically at full commercial scale. Examples include iron and steel mills, which can realize significant carbon reduction in primary steel production with simultaneous methanol production. MHPSE has both extensive know-how and a longstanding track record in the design and construction of high efficiency powergeneration systems as well as integration of environmental engineering systems in modern power plants. Many of the largest thermal power plants in Europe have been spearheaded by MHPSE. "This alliance allows Carbon Recycling International to gain the ability to market and deliver its power-to-methanol equipment and

Legal action will be initiated against the company(ies) indulging in such gross criminality. Any Companies, Person(s), officials and functionaries found working in cahoots shall be liable for Legal Prosecution and Claims and Damages arising thereof.
